Blake Injury Update

From the team:

Steve Blake will fly to Portland to undergo further medical examination on his separated right shoulder. He will miss the next two games and is day-to-day.

Also, FYI, Rudy is a game-time decision for tonight's game against New Jersey.

I'm sad that Steve's injured

But I’m very interested in seeing how the team plays in his absence.

Sometimes you learn more about a team during injury stretches.

It will be interesting

Will they miss Blake even more than they missed Roy? Maybe. – Elgin

I don't think that question can be answered while Rudy is also out, IMO

Since Rudy duplicates some of what Blake brings to the table (but not all). With both out, our 3 point shooting will naturally plummet, unless Outlaw and Roy get hot.

by Timmay! on Jan 15, 2009 11:58 AM PST up reply actions

OK, I'm concerned now

I’d felt Roy’s injury might be a blessing in disguise. At the time, I commented that now Roy would get some needed rest and maybe the other guys would become less dependent on him. Both developments might pay dividends up the road.

But having Blake out, Roy still nursing the hamstring and bad finger, Rudy with the bad foot, Przy toughing it out with a busted wrist, and of course no Martell: I’m afraid this is the tipping point. The guys might find themselves flat unable to compete. And an extended losing streak now could make the playoffs a pipe dream.

So count me among the Chicken Little crowd this time. Here’s hoping for speedy recoveries—and/or some sudden growth & consistency from the rookies.

This is de rigeur for the Blazers

They held out Roy for four games too, to find out what Rudy and Bayless could do in his absence.

Now Blake’s getting some time off too, to see how the rest of the team responds.

Next: LaMarcus. – Elgin

interesting question

who would start at PF if LMA went down? Last year, Frye subbed admirably for LMA, but this year he’s been atrocious. Would Outlaw start at PF in this situation?

And if Outlaw started

would Batum go 40 minutes?

They’d have to get some kind of minutes from the Frye/Diogu/Shavlik troika. – Elgin

Oden is my pet player on this team

So my view is slanted slightly, but the use of him last night was awful.

That being said, putting the ball inside does make the game seem easier. That, and point guard play. I have criticised Aldridge in the past for not taking it inside and being “soft”, but when he does I love the guy, opens up the game for everyone else rather than having four guys crowd the perimieter.

I have no idea why I posted this here

 Completely the wrong thread.

 Come back Stevie!

BLAKE OUT = ZERO WINS

Steve B was the glue that held this young team together and now he is out. My prediction is Zero wins during the recover time. NOT good as other teams in the west are beginning to put it together and the TB are going to suffer. How long he is out could decide if this is a playoff year or a lottery year!

Nah

The schedule for the rest of January is pretty light. Cavs and Utah, but 6 sub 500 teams. Portland should go at least 4-4 without Blake, even if he was out that long.

I know: Let's turn this thread

into a discussion of whether Sergio or Jerryd should start!

Sorry amlmart, I just couldn’t stop myself.

I know, I know... I forgive you.

Sergio + Rudy = 16
Sergio + Bayless = 16
Batum 8+8=16

Get back soon, Steve!

My best on a full and speedy recovery!

Edgers, I hope you will start to appreciate what you have now he is out for (hopefully) a few games. Watch this team without its floor leader and learn!

Sounds like it might just be a few games

That’s good.

We will win at least one of these two road games without him, maybe both. Book it.

Blake's absence will be HUGE... but Rudy could help a lot on the PG position

Is he out like at 90%? Very low possibilities? The thing is that some friends are gonna party tonight… But I’d prefer to watch the Blazers with Rudy xD

by Kartemax on Jan 15, 2009 1:24 PM PST reply actions

Unless Bayless or Sergio can knock down a the jumper...

I think Nate should go back to the Roy, Batum, Trout lineup down the stretch.(assuming Rudy is out) At least Batum can bother Harris or VC with his length and is a little more consistent with the 3 ball, moving without the ball, and crashing the O boards (transistion D might suffer)

Well, I could be wrong, but I believe diversity is an old, old wooden ship that was used during the Civil War era.

Silver Lining

We’ve got a lot of questions about the development of Sergio and Bayless. Now, is the time to get some answers.

Can Bayless fit in with Brandon? Can Bayless run the point for stretches of the game?

Is Sergio our starter of the future? When he’s with the first team what will he do?

If Rudy is healthy I’d like to see some 3 guard rotations with Roy, Rudy and Sergio. It will be good to get some looks.

Most people feel Blake will be the back-up by the time we reach our championship window.

Do we have the starter on the team right now?

Well this will be a growth opportunity....

Without Blake, maybe Sergio will step up. Maybe Bayless will gain more confidence (love him taking it to the hole). NBA teams weather the injury storm every year. I’ll be curious to see who steps up (Oden? Bayless? God forbid Sergio?) and who welts from the heat..(eyes on LMA).

But being honest is all I do well.....

QFT

Blake got injured just in time to see whether to ship Sergio or Bayless out before the deadline!

by Zaig on Jan 15, 2009 1:48 PM PST up reply actions

It hurts!

I separated my shoulder about 10 years ago, and man does it hurt. Serious pain for about a week, then sore for about 2 more. We’re talking painful to sleep with, let alone play basketball with the same arm!

I hope this is a very mild shoulder separation, and he’ll only be out a week or so. Otherwise, it is like 3-4 weeks.

This was supposed to be an easier part of the schedule to rack up a cushion for the playoff run… But in reality we’re only 2 full games out of the top 8. Bayless needs to show up, bigtime, and we definitely need Rudy back.

Injuries

Roy: Hamstring..still bothering him.
LMA: Ruptured eardrum last week against Pistons, seems to be doing well with it.
Rudy: Foot sprain, aggravated, day to day
Blake: shoulder separation, serious pain, 1-4 weeks out
Pryz: Broken wrist! Hurts, but plays through the pain, takes lots of advil.
Webster: ? Who’s that?
Oden: Microfracture knee surgery, Doing well, with less explosiveness than pre-injury.
Raef: RLEC is actually a good thing.

Lots of injuries for such a young team.
I hope they don’t melt away completely before the final playoff run.

Quick with an info-rich update

Blake will miss 7-10 days (4-5 games, if that’s accurate— @ NJ, @ Char, Mil, Cle, Was). Sergio will start tonight and Rudy will play.

Its strange that Nate has Sergio playing with Roy and Bayless with Rudy. We’ll see who ends up playing how many minutes.

I think the Blazers should still win 3 of those 5 games, even without Blake… if not 4.
