Do you hoop?

A few nights ago at the YMCA a thought popped into my head.  Are any of the guys around the gym members of BE?  The two courts at the Y that night were not packed like a Saturday morning, but with 20 or so people it wasn’t a bad showing for a Tuesday.  There was a good amount of people wearing Blazer gear, and maybe that was what got me thinking.  So here is my question.  Do you play basketball?  What parks? What courts?  Did you play in high school? College? The occasional game of horse?  What is the extent of your basketball “career”?  I am not suggesting it is important that you have any experience at all, I’m just curious.  I played for my high school basketball team and now frequent many of the parks in southeast Portland as well as the YMCA.  I try and play as often as time and weather permit.

Played in high school

now I coach middle schoolers.

I get a bit of time to play with the other coaches, but I would definitely be interested in learning about league’s in the Portland/metro area.

From the back of Travis Outlaw's Franz card: Travis leads the team in monstrous thunder dunks, wins awards for post game interviews, and often gets extra points for degree of difficulty.

Plenty of pick-up when weather is nice, starting PF last year for Squad Up

Yes, THAT Squad Up, of University of San Francisco intramural basketball league fame, featuring myself, a former wide receiver on a high school team that won back-to-back titles in the Philadelphia Catholic League, a Lakers fan that played against Arron Afflalo in high school and two ginger kids. I was used as a “banger.” We should have balled, but had precious little chemistry as a team. Autographs on a glossy photo of me in my purple intramural jersey available upon request

You have two options. In one, I’m lying on my front on the court with my feet playfully up in the air and a balled-up fist nestled next to each cheek, highlighting my dimples. In the next, I am standing with my back to the camera, holding a ball at my side and looking over my shoulder with a coy smile.

Either way, I’ll be needing some credit card information.

My stamina is terrible and my skills have eroded big-time since I was a teenager. I can’t believe I was once a rotation player on my high school varsity team.

I’m hoping that once I’m in better shape I’ll have the gumption to join a league. But I’m definitely a NRFPT player right now.

I play

On a mens C-league team here in Eugene, OR. We’re 2-1 into our 10 games season. Basketball is the funnest sport science every created. I’ve been hooked since I was ten. I play shooting guard, and I’m sort of a 3 point specialist in our league, but on the playgrounds they call me the layup king because I have a knack for getting in the lane and finishing nicely with either hand. I’ll play b-ball as much as I can until my body’s too old to handle it anymore. Then all I’ll have watching my blazers on TV. Hopefully that’s years and years away still.

I played 4 straight season in their mens C-League!!

Nice facilities but our team had some issues with technicals and we were disqualified from participating in the playoffs in there summer league this last summer. So we moved our team to the Eugene City League. When I play on the playgrounds we usually go under the bridge at Washington/Jefferson park. Either there or at the nice little half court they have behind the law school building at the U of O.

I play alot

I play in a league through portlandbasketball. When the weather is decent we have a large crew of great guys that play at Sewall Crest Park off 32nd and Hawthorne. This has been going on for years, and we even have designated days and times most try to make it. We’ve exchanged phone numbers and this year it has led to renting a gym for the winter in the neighborhood for Sunday nights. It’s the main thing I look forward to and just got me some new Roy kicks! Look out!

Still a young one

But currently sidelined with ACL and Patella tendon damage. For the last three years (Since I was 15) I have played in the national league in Britain at under 18 level ( in the top league a.k.a "Premier"). Having to miss out this season though due to aforementioned injury. Possible surgery coming up, which is worrying. I have played in european tournaments before and got M.V.P in one of the games. Played since I was about 14 for the city and coached by a professional basketball player on the side.

I wish I lived in America, Portland more specifically. Just to play in the city leagues and take advantage of the oppurtunities you guys have. I don’t get an awful lot around here, no local league to speak of, one summer league, no sports halls open for basketball during the week. Pretty poor. Going to Mexico next year and hoping to find some leagues to play in.

I have played every position at some point. Only six foot tall, but about 200 pounds which at my age is a major advantage. Played point guard all season two seasons ago and a bit of wing play too. Now play more wing and post up weaker defenders. Mostly mid range shots, post ups and slashing is where my points come from. Trying to work on that three point shot though! It’s at about 30% right now. I love to hit guys hard through setting screens and hitting them. And pushing big men out is enjoyable, watching their faces as they’ve realised a six foot tall guy is pushing them around.

I am scraping a dunk! Will work on that.

Love, love, love Basketball, no other sport for me
