IF THE TRADE IS TRUE
We have BLAKE at 6-3 172 and NATE at 5-9 190 playing defense on
Division rivals
Deron Williams 6-3 207
Chauncey Billups 6-3 202.
Then you have if the Playoffs here is the order with PG's
1. LAKERS-DFISH 6-1 210 and Farmar 6-2 180
2. SAN ANTONIO- T Parker 6-2 180 and J Vaughn 6-1 190
3. DENVER- C Billups 6-3 202 and A Carter 6-2 195
4. NEW ORLEANS- CP3 6-0 175 and A Daniels? 6-4 205
5. PHEONIX- Nash 6-3 178 and backups suck here
6. BLAZERS info listed above
7. UTAH- Deron Williams 6-3 207 and Brewer? 6-7 227
8. HOUSTON- Raefer Alston 6-2 175 and Aaron Brooks 6-0 161 (good nate matchup)
So in a best of 7 Series we'd be hard pressed at the PG position against the Top 4 Teams, If we really want to make a run we need to BOLSTER that position. If Blake gets in foul trouble we a little man and a rookie at that spot. I know BROY can play the PG but that's not where we want him all game. (Only in the fourth when it's his time to dominate.)

true
but he had some experience, and if you’re going to trade sergio trade him for a better choice, a bigger guard
by NKing on Jan 14, 2009 10:00 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Why?
This is the same logic that got Bryant Reeves drafted, Kwame Brown drafted 1st overall, and multiple years of Shawn Bradley.
How many of these point guards have post games? Not to mention that Nate Robinson is of comparable size, just not height, means that it’s unlikely he’ll be abused in the post anyway. I guess you could make the argument that these PGs will be able to see the floor and see over Robinson, but if that was an absolute difference maker then we’d just roll out a lineup of Roy, Outlaw, Aldridge, Zilla, and Oden.
Would you have preferred we trade Sergio for Sun Yue of LA…? He’s like 6’6" or something…

Case in point...
Dallas – the unmentioned possible playoff team – plays both Jason Terry and Jose Juan Barea behind J-Kidd… And they’re oompa-loompas.
Phoenix – Steve Nash is listed at 6’3" but he’s closer to my height of 6’1".

if we have problems guarding quicker smaller guards this addresses that problem sorta at the expense of the larger guards…which maybe roy or rudy could switch over to.

its referring to the breaking news that 955 reported involving a straight up (maybe + fillers) trade involving Sergio to NYK for Nate Robinson. There is no link anywhere as it seems to be a straight rumor.

If the trade is true
it probably means they have assessed that Jerryd is just about ready, and will be ready by next year, but they wanted an upgrade for this year. This would be rent-a-player, I suspect.

I don't like it
Nate is a fun player to watch, but I don’t see him adding as much on the court as Sergio given what Portland needs. Of course, this could be Sergio’s relative value around the league right now, but I don’t know about this deal.
Jerryd Bayless = Marlo Stanfield
- Early stage Marlo at this point, but Rex is the emotionless killer new to the game. He will take over, and there will be causalties – it’s just a matter of time.

If this trade is true, it is just making room for Bayless next year. With Nate being a FA after this season, I seriously doubt we’re trying to keep him longer then just the next few months.

I don’t think Nate Rob is in too high of demand around the league. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him re-signed in the off-season.

GEEZ WE GET IT YOU LOVE NATE ROBINSON GAWD
Jus’ kidding.
Yeah, Nate is a dynamic player who can do a LOT. An incredible athlete. And very tough. And, if he scores 40+ in a game, no one is surprised— he is capable of HUGE games, huge dunk, huge plays.
It’s just the inbetween games that worry me, plus his ballhoggery. As the backup SG, I’m fine with it, but as the backup PG, I worry— especially when you got Rudy and Travis who also need the ball to do what they do.
Bayles tries to pass to show he will pass, but Nate-Rob doesn’t concern himself with such niceties. He just shoots.
He is a much better player than Sergio, so player value in a vacuum alone, it’s a good deal. And maybe being on a better team with actual stakes that matter will change Nate-Rob’s game.
I still don’t know how I feel. I am not a Sergio booster, but I am conflicted.
Mortimer
by Mortimer on Jan 14, 2009 10:26 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I disagree a little...
Bayless has shown a ‘willingness’ to try and pass, but when he’s been effective (Chicago & Boston), it wasn’t because he was finding open cutters and throwing alley-oops.
Right now, Bayless is a pure scorer. So is Nate Robinson. The question is: is Nate Rob a scorer because of the team he’s on (who wouldn’t shoot if they were losing every game under Isiah Thomas?) or is it because that’s who he is as a player?
The year UW almost beat Connecticut in the March Madness tournament, Roy and Nate Rob had a beautiful 1-2 punch. Roy can score, he can create for Robinson, and Nate Rob usually would return the favor (although less regularly as Roy is more apt to defer)….
"Now, you take a bobcat or a Jayhawk. You know they'll run if you give 'em the chance. But when one don't run, why, you shoot him and shoot him quick. Raef's my dog, Pa. I've gotta do what's right..." Old Yeller (1957)

What I mean is
Right now, Robinson is clearly better and more effective than Bayless.
But Robinson has also never shown a willingness to wanna pass, and Bayless as a rookie has— nevermind the effectiveness, but the effort is there.
I didn’t watch Robinson much in college, but I remember him. I can’t say how he played then though, so maybe he changed his game as a pro.
He’s a big time gunner though, and shoots a lot of bad shots. Maybe it’s because he’s on a bad team, or maybe it is who he is. I ain’t sure… but that IS who he has been, as a pro.
His toughness would be good for us, that’s for sure. As would his ability to create his own shot.

not only for the reasons you mentioned…but i’m just not sure what is going to happen down the road. will nate be extended? that would answer a lot of the questions right there…if he isnt going to be extended then this trade basically gives us an upgrade and a better chance to make the playoffs this year but opens the door for bayless next year. if he does get extended…what are bayless’ and blake’s future with the team?

Trust your instincts Capt. ! Nate R is a ball hog ! He
comes from a disfunctional team, where he was allowed (?)
to do anything he wanted with the ball. Yes, he’s got skills,
but why would we disrupt a wonderful chemistry to add
him to the mix ? We are going to be 10 games over .500
after the 76’ers, and Martell hasn’t played a game. GO, Batuum,
Rudy and BRex haven’t even had 1/2 a season to meld with
the team.
Why make substandard trades for players who may disrupt
our chemistry and would not be signed after the season. Just
because he’s a NW guy and ex-husky ? Give me a break !
How about if we trade Sergio, Frye & RLEC to COINCAST for
the right of all Blazer fans to see Blazer Cable ? Now that would

Ball Hogs
I dunno…if we are just comparing Ball Hoggedness…I think I’d rather have our current ballhogs than Nate. Bayless may not provide the same offensive punch as Nate, but at least he “tries” to pass…Nate won’t even try. Trout can at least play off the ball this year and catch and shoot. He’s also learning to play with Rudy as well passing the ball at times.
I’m kinda undecided about this Nate thing. If its straight up..Nate is the better player…but does he fit? I dunno. The only thing he has going for him as far as chemistry is Seattle and Brandon.

Another possible reason for the trade
is the fact that Robinson was teammates with Roy at UW and that they remain close friends to this day. Perhaps Roy has been putting a bug in Pritchard’s ear about bringing Nate on board.

I gots me a question
Sergio could develop better offense. BUT—
Don’t you think his complete inability to hit an open jumper or make a layup makes him a POOR fit for D’Antoni ball, which relies on the PG to be an offensive threat?
Obviously Sergio’s passing would be dynamite for D’Antoni, but being able to hit the jumper sets it all up. If he plays major minutes, teams will just play off of him, defend for the pass.
It seems like he’d be a good fit, but I think an average playmaker like Duhon, but who can hit a shot, fits better than a GREAT playmaker like Sergio, who is a brick-tamland-meister.
I dunno.

if you aren’t getting better in the west then you are going to get left behind. there are only a handful of guys who can slow down cp3, harris, williams, and parker…i dont think anyone can shut one of those guys out for an entire playoff series. chances are even if you had a strong defensive pg…you are going to hang onto him. its not ideal…but our NEXT best solution maybe to match them basket for basket. i’m not saying that robinson is the answer to all of our problems…but he can contribute and he is a decent upgrade over sergio. as good defensively as cp3 is…even he couldn’t slow down parker in the playoffs. the best he could have done is match baskets with the man.

Are you responding to me?
I’m not defending anyone. Good lord. I simply think it’s silly to knock his height. If you’re going to talk about defense, talk about defense. Not the fact that we’ll have a shorter guy defending slightly taller guys. I can’t believe you can’t believe I’m sticking up for somebody here … ‘cause I’m not.

instead of
reading our posts clearly he is just attacking us bc we dont agree with him. i don’t think you or i even mentioned anything about nate robinson being a good defender. i’ll help him out…we are talking about how SIZE IS NOT A NECESSARY PREREQUISITE IN GOOD DEFENSE.

No need to shout, son.
Anyone remember the old NBA One-On-One challenge they had back in the 1970s during All-Star weekend? I’ll never forget seeing 6’4", 190-lb. Geoff Petrie beat 6’11", 260-lb. Bob Lanier in the semi-finals.
by MiledAnimal on Jan 14, 2009 1:57 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
That sounds awesome
I didn’t know they had a one on one challenge during the all star weekend! That’s aweome!
They should bring that back, it’d be really fun to watch. Yao vs Nate Robinson could be fun, to stay on topic.
Players would really be trying so that they save face and look good.

Yeah, the League dropped it
after a couple of seasons, despite its popularity with fans, for some lame reason. There used to be cries for them to bring it back every year around the All-Star break but hardly anyone brings it up anymore.

Bill Simmons tries to revive it, and I think the Basketball Jones too
On one of the last podcasts a reader/viewer/listener send in an idea of matching up the best scorers and all-defense players from the last season. I would definitely watch something like this as a one on one or two on two.

Just trying to get my point across since after a few posts w/B Fan Mr. Nking still didn’t understand where we were coming from.
As far as the 1 on 1 thing, I wasn’t even born back then but it sounds like a fun competition. I even kinda miss the senior game.

That's exactly what Sam Smith is rumor mongering, in a three-way deal with Chicago
The other possibility I’ve heard speculated regarding the Trailblazers, though I don’t see it myself, is a multi-team deal with Tracy McGrady going there and Hinrich ending up in Houston. If McGrady could improve from his knee issues it could be a heck of a veteran addition for a young team on the brink. And it’s seemed more and more lately that McGrady’s lineup uncertainty is baffling the Rockets. You’ve got to say, in any case, Portland is an interesting franchise.

not to take anything away from tracy
but if i wanted a veteran…he’s not exactly my ideal choice. id like a vet to bring poise and playoff experience to the table.

He has experience, yet only in the first round ;-)
And of course his health is a huge issue. When healthy he is still top 5-10 at least on his position. Does he or doesn’t he play today would become a big topic on BE.

Perhaps he could become an injury magnet?
All the bad injuries that could affect Roy, LA, Oden, Rudy, etc. would be redirected to McGrady.
I’d rather not lose Joel & B-Rex, thanks.

I think the fact that Smith mentions that ...
he DOESN’T see this happening makes it an even stronger possibility. Has this guy ever been right about anything? I think he just dreams up trades that he thinks would work and then passes them off as rumors …

Rudy
Travis

if that was the case
i dont think we’d ever see a deep 10-15 man rotation. nate, jerryd, and travis all need the ball to create for themselves. they are all perfectly capable of creating and scoring…but i just think if it came down to it we would have a more traditional substitution scheme rather than having 5 bench players on the court every game.

Nate for Sergio? There are unconfirmed reports out there that the Portland Trail Blazers have traded point guard Sergio Rodriguez to New York for point guard Nate Robinson. This was reported by 95.5 The Game in Portland – owned by Paul Allen, owner of the Blazers. HOOPSWORLD is checking contacts in Portland and New York and will update as needed.
UPDATE – an hour later: Sources from within both the Blazers and Knicks are calling this just talk and that there is no truth to this.

2 problems in aquiring Nate Robinson
1. He does not meet team character identity. Recall his involvement in an on-court fight. he has an alpha dog tough guy personality which is good but doesn’t really fit our culture. Moreover, Brandon has stated that he deferred to Nate in college and did not come into his own until after Nate left UW. Nate Robinson would have to take a back set to Brandon and that may be questionable for Nate to do.
2. He eats up cap space after this season. Just like Frye and Diaogu, if Nate is not extended or waived outright , then he eats up precious cap-space this summer. I doubt we do any trade that limits our options in the future for possible short-term gain.
by NWfan on Jan 14, 2009 1:50 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
"Culture..."
That’s kind of hard to define, right? We’re still in the business of winning basketball games… Nate’s roll in the fight was that he stood up for a teammate after a cheap shot, which isn’t nearly as bad as throwing an open handed punch and running away like Carmelo Anthony did.
You’re projecting that Nate wouldn’t defer to Brandon Roy, but there’s a news flash here – Brandon Roy has emerged as a top tier player in the NBA. Would Nate also refuse to defer to Lebron James? Kobe Bryant? I think Team USA showed (when everyone knew that Kobe was taking over the 4th quarter of the Gold Medal game) that, at some point, every player will defer if they think there’s a definitively better player on the court and this would be amplified by the fact that Nate-Rob and Roy are friends.
He would eat up cap space, yes, but in terms of pure scorers/play makers who can come off the bench, how many better players are out there than Nate Robinson? Sure there’s a few (Barbosa, Ginobili) but he’s young, quick, strong, and has a history with our best player. Also, it’s unlikely now that Miles is back on the cap, that we wait until this summer to make our big move. We just won’t have enough cap space to do so.
It’s more likely that all altercations with the roster from here on out are done with the trade and the draft…
"Now, you take a bobcat or a Jayhawk. You know they'll run if you give 'em the chance. But when one don't run, why, you shoot him and shoot him quick. Raef's my dog, Pa. I've gotta do what's right..." Old Yeller (1957)

I’m interpreting this as more of a knock on our ‘culture’ than on Nate.

this trade is foolish
Portland needs Sergio to quarterback the 2nd unit and get the ball to Rudy and Travis where they like it.
If you think Nate or Jerryd can do that as well as Sergio, I think you are flat wrong.
