nate robinson

just heard at work that nate robinson was traded to blazers for sergio. haven't found anything on the inet about it yet. wonder if broy was pulling some strings. We'll see how this move works later in the year, I already thought we were undersized at the PG position when playing against Chauncey, CP3 and Rondo etc....i guess we'll wait and see if this is true. Good news for huskie fans.

main concern again is size at the PG

and Bayless is not a natural PG….Look at our division rivals for example,
Deron Williams 6-3 207, Chauncey Billups 6-3 202. While nate is an exciting player he’s 5-9 and 190 and then Blake is 6-3 172. Could be a concern in a 7 game series. I’ve been a Piston fan my whole like and Chauncey loves to back undersized guards down.

why write off Bayless?

Just because he apperently isnt a natural at PG (which is yet to be seen), doesn’t mean he wont be defending the point position when he is on the floor, like when he is lined up with Broy. Bayless has the size, strength and speed to defend at the point and writing him off just because some people believe he is a tweener guard due to his shooting touch is really not a valid argument.

Yea I think Sergio would

love it in New York. For his position and abilities that fits him so much better than our slow half court offense.

From the back of Travis Outlaw's Franz card: Travis leads the team in monstrous thunder dunks, wins awards for post game interviews, and often gets extra points for degree of difficulty.

by TheOdenator on Jan 14, 2009 9:28 AM PST up reply actions

Agree or disagree...?

Nate Robinson is a pretty solid scorer to compliment Roy (which he did in college – actually stealing the spotlight before he went pro) and he’s an upgrade statistically over what Sergio gave us in limited action.

And there’s no doubt he’s better than Bayless right now, which could help us with our goal for the season (playoffs) without hurting our future. He’s going to be a restricted free agent at the end of the season and we can decide then whether or not Bayless and him are duplicates…

I love this deal.

Holler at all those UW boys! SIGN SPENCER HAWES!

gotta agree

We need some confirmation from someplace at some point in this discussion. I think Nate Rob would be great coming off of the bench, and he has been Killing it this year. If we don’t move Travis in this deal this is just an amazing team coming off of the bench, and Nate provides some fire that the second unit sometimes has trouble with. Honestly I really like this deal, despite the fact that it means we will have more Huskies than the Iditarod.

From the back of Travis Outlaw's Franz card: Travis leads the team in monstrous thunder dunks, wins awards for post game interviews, and often gets extra points for degree of difficulty.

by TheOdenator on Jan 14, 2009 9:52 AM PST up reply actions

Iditarod...

I wouldn’t say our log jam is any worse than it was with Blake – Sergio and Bayless… Although, Nate Robinson is an upgrade in talent from Sergio (statistically at least) which may make it harder for Bayless, but in some ways, Nate Rob is Bayless with a three-point shot this season…

His defense probably isn’t as good (although we’ve only seen a limited amount out of Bayless) but his offensive game is much better…

What’s the follow-up move here? How does Rudy react to life without his life-partner? Does Nate-Rob start and push Blake back to the second line (as a facilitator to go with Rudy and Outlaw)?

I think the major question is...

Will both Nate Robinson and Rudy Fernandez be wearing Blazers uniforms in the dunk contest?

I would say that Blake’s job is relatively secure. He knows the offense, hits three-pointers at a ridiculous clip (over 40% is darn impressive) and plays sustainable defense as to not be taken advantage of.

However, this does make our second line even MORE exciting. Rudy? Robinson? Outlaw? I would pay to watch Second Team vs. First Team scrimmages…

Nate seems like THE D’Antoni style PG – runs, runs, runs, shoots, passes. Also, I like him because he can play defense on penetrators, something no other Blazer other than Travis does decently (and even then, Travis can guard slashers, LeBron-types, but not a Derrick Rose type small dribbler)

Yeah, there would be a ton of duplication in our 2nd unit back court

Say what you will about Sergio, but he’s a fundamentally different type of player than Nate or Bayless. Really, both of those guys are a little closer to Rudy than Sergio, at least in terms of their games. Also, with Trout there, too, presumably, the second unit would be chock full of scorers who aren’t exactly distributors.

Plus, it’s hard to imagine Nate/Bayless/Rudy all playing at once given how undersized they’d be. And you’d figure Nate would garner more minutes than what Sergio’s been getting, so it doesn’t exactly open up time for Bayless out there.

If it goes through, here are my conclusions

-Management realizes that making the playoffs this year is an important goal, and that an upgrade at PG is important towards reaching that goal

-Jerryd Bayless is more a part of this team’s future than Sergio Rodriguez. Thus, Sergio is expendable

-Sergio’s effect on Rudy Fernandez is less than many fans believe. Sure, their alley-oops are fun to watch, but Rudy may rely on Sergio less than we all believe OR Sergio was only needed to help Rudy adjust to the NBA and management feel that period is over

-The second unit (presumably Nate wouldn’t start) needs some more scoring punch and somebody who can get to the basket, and Bayless is not ready to fill that role

Nate would obviously bring toughness and is a lil’ sparkplug of energy, but he is an unrepetant gunner who is also very annoying.

I’d rather have playmaking Sergio distributing the ball in the 2nd unit than I would Nate Robinson stealing shots from Rudy and everyone else, and being unhappy with playing time.

Hmmmmmmm.

Seems strange to me, has to be more there.

And I still maintain that Sergio’s offensive woes make him not a great fit for D’Antoni ball but he could develop better offense as he ages.

In a PLAYER X vs PLAYER Y type deal

Then Nate Robinson is clearly the better PLAYER, but I don’t think he’s the better fit, and he’s not a good enough player to have to deal later with the ‘how-he-fit-Rudy-and-friends’ issue.

I dunno, I just dunno. Nate can explode some games and go 1 for 17 in another, with 8 turnovers. Man.

I guess you can say I don’t know how I feel about it.

He’s also been playing in New York, where there roster has been a “mixed bag” of “fertilizer”… For all we know, Nate could score like Jason Terry when surrounded by a similar amount of talent…

We haven't struggled offensively that much, even still

And we’re one of the best scoring teams in the NBA, 1st and 2nd unit.

I’d just rather address defense before adding more scoring, but like I said, Nate-Rob is better than Sergio, easily… but I dunno if he’d like being a backup forever, or be willing to pass to Rudy.

I am anti-ball hog, though I like Nate’s scrappy toughness. No one will mess with him, even though he’s a midget, and he would punch KG.

They have to get league approval...

There are a bunch of reasons why the story hasn’t officially “broke” yet… Odds are both teams are looking to expand this deal into something larger, as presumably neither team is finished making deals… So, odds are they’re contacting the Clippers to try and get Marcus Camby involved… Or they’re still debating whether or not Shavlik Randolph is a deal breaker…

Shoot, maybe KP’s trying to work out a Sergio + Ike Diogu/Channing Frye for David Lee & Nate Rob double pritch-slap…

It's all a fake

KP likes reading Bedge, and he got tired of all the Darius fan posts, and said, “I know, I’ll have one of my minions start a trade rumor, just for kicks.”

Christopher Robin had wheezles and sneezles
They bundled him into his bed.
They gave him what goes with cold in the nose,
And some more for cold in the head.
They wondered if wheezles could turn into measles,
If sneezles would turn into mumps;
They examined his chest for a rash, and the rest
Of his body for swelling and lumps.
They sent for some doctors in sneezles and wheezles
To tell them what ought to be done.
All sorts and conditions of famous physicians
Came hurrying round at a run.
They all made a note of state of his throat,
They asked if he suffered from thirst;
They asked if the sneezles came after the wheezles,
Or if the first sneezles came first.
They say "If you teasle a sneezle or wheezle,
A measle may easily grow.
But humour or pleazle the wheezle or snezle,
The measle will certainly go."

They expounded the reazles for sneezles and wheezles,
The manner of measles when new.
They said, "If he freezles in draughts and in breezles,
The PHTHEEZLES may even ensue."

Christopher Robin got up in the morning,
The sneezles had vanished away.
And the look of his eye seemed to say to the sky,
"Now, how to amuse them today? "

Wonder how KP will amuse us tomorrow….

But he’s a Euro and flashy, so he’s worth more still.

Sergio DEFINITELY has value league wide, certainly more than Gray, even though Gray has value also as a 7 footer who can at least be on the court and not be as bad as Ha Seung Jinn.

Sergio is still young enough where all of his flaws can be covered up by saying he’ll get better at it, and what he does well we can assume will get better. It’s the magic of youth!

His passing, ballhandling, and creativity (along with the youth) give him value. His raw numbers won’t, but his style compensates for that.

And, his Euro-ness.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.

OK, that should just about wrap up the goaltending discussion.
