Daily Miles Update
- Darius just checked into the game tonight. One more and the money is back on the Blazers books.
- According to Brian Hendrickson, Kevin Pritchard wouldn't really confirm or deny the Yahoo report regarding whether the Blazers submitted a claim for Darius Miles off waivers.
"We looked at a lot of different options. It just wasn't a viable option for us."
Pritchard went on to say that the team poured over several different approaches to the situation in order to protect its cap space and luxury tax situation before sending out their now infamous e-mail, though he did not go into any specifics.
So I pressed Pritchard and asked him whether he could specifically deny that the team attempted at any point to submit a claim for Miles. His response:
"I can't say that. All I can say is it wasn't a viable option."
- The league will not fine the Blazers for Larry Miller's Memo.
- If you don't care, scroll down and read the Clyde Drexler interview.

It’s fun. It makes it even more fun when the Blazers sign someone this summer with Miles on the books that still ticks everyone off. Trust in KP and he will show you what’s what.

Here is my utopia
Memphis’ next game is against Utah. Once Utah opens a can on Memphis, the coach calls for Darius to come play some garbage minutes to seal the deal on Portland. Darius walks up to the coach, and proclaims loudly, “sign me to a guaranteed deal or I won’t play. I won’t be a pawn in your wicked, wicked game.” Memphis refuses to sign him for the year, Darius refuses to play game 10 without a guaranteed deal, and Portland fans lovingly embrace Darius for saving our off-season, and Memphis becomes the schmuck.
I can dream, can’t I?

wow.
He has six points in eight minutes. Based upon the two games he’s played for Memphis I would say he’s probably better than Channing Frye or Ike Diogu. He’s certainly is better in the post and (I can’t believe I’m saying this) actually a better defender. Granted, it’s a small sample size.

It's obviously a conspiracy.
Cleveland let Darius score those points. Now Memphis can say, “See, Darius scored 13 points in 12 minutes against the best defensive team in the league.”
It’s all a bunch of lies. Clearly Darius can’t play basketball anymore.
by Nick Van Excellent on Jan 13, 2009 7:49 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
And to think...
People though Larry Miller’s e-mail was because they wanted to harm Darius… Exactly the opposite… They wanted to protect Darius from letting other execs use him by getting his hopes up and being let down in the end.

Dan Gilbert sent that e-mail :)
Jerryd Bayless = Marlo Stanfield
- Early stage Marlo at this point, but Rex is the emotionless killer new to the game. He will take over, and there will be causalties – it’s just a matter of time.
by blazeraddict on Jan 13, 2009 7:55 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
That is another issue
Dan Gilbert did the d-bag reply-all on the e-mail because the Cavs are in a similar situation with Eric Snow. I wonder if Snow will get Darius’s roster spot in Memphis next season… Hmmm….
by david1978pdx on Jan 13, 2009 7:58 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Eric Snow is on Cleveland Cavaliers roster and unofficially retired, while also in the final year ...
of his contract this season. It’s the exact same as Raef LaFrentz’s situation with the Trail Blazers.
Heck, Dan Gilbert, Len Komoroski, Danny Ferry made a prudent decision regarding Snow; on the other hand, Paul Allen, Larry Miller, and Kevin Pritchard made a rash decision with Darius Miles.
by AK1984 on Jan 13, 2009 11:01 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
big difference is...
Cleveland has little to gain by medically retiring Snow, as it isn’t going to get them under the salary cap. i would be willing to bet if they were due to have a ton of capspace and could increase it by another $9 million, they would do so to.
This situation is the perfect storm to spotlight the poorly conceived medical retirement/capspace rules: The player comes back on another team and not the orignal team, the original team stands to gain or lose capsapce, the original team goes from under the tax to over the tax, which provied a financial incentive for other teams to involve themselves in the process. It is the combination of all these things that make this case the perfect storm.
Rule #1 of nitpicking is to get it right.
by douglast on Jan 13, 2009 11:06 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Wrong
Cleveland did file for medical retirement for the final year of Eric Snow, but so far the insurance company didn’t accept since he just has arthritic knees. He could still play with pain killers.

1 more game
Can’t wait for it to pass, the few days of “ha, Portland’s screwed”, and Memphis and Darius can move on with their lives, and this whole conversation can evolve to the real meat of the legal wranglings – which as to do with the incredible stupidity of the “10 game rule” and the no-win situation it puts Portland in. That case is the real one worth fighting here, and one can speculate (as many have), that the attempt to claim him off waivers and the infamous emails were all laying the groundwork for making our case in the real issue, which is against the league, not other teams or Darius.
The whole issue, as it’s being covered by the press, is all big and sensational and flashy and makes for great headlines. But other than being filled with all kinds of information, it also is just a big side-show.
This has never been about whether or not Darius should be able to pursue a comeback, or whether other teams should be allowed to sign him or not, it’s about whether we, after following all the rules in place, should incur the salary cap hit penalty, without having any of the normal benefits associated with having salary on your cap – namely, the right to trade it, employ the players services, or negotiate a buyout.
I for one, will be happy when this story turns that next corner.
Rule #1 of nitpicking is to get it right.

quick fix
10 game rule only applies if the player returns to the same team that retired him. closes the loophole. doesn’t penalize a team for following the retirement rules, doesn’t incentize or prevent a 2nd team from potentially signing the guy, and doesn’t prevent the guy from trying to make a comeback.

Is it OK to root for Darius to injure his knee getting out of bed tomorrow morning?
I know this is a controversial issue, but here a little ditty from another thread:
Think of it in Iraq War terms… when the US bombs a building next to the school, and it hurts the school a little but destroys a large cache of weapons and dozens of terrorists, the Generals and Bush don’t get any joy out of the school being harmed. But they get a lot of joy out of the overall mission. The school is just collateral damage. The didn’t want the school to be hurt and didn’t cheer when it was harmed, but they knew it was necessary to win the overall war.
Likewise, Darius getting hurt is just collateral damage to the greater good of Paul Allen saving some luxury tax bucks and KP being able to have more flexibility in the free agent and trade markets.

He’s in their database (pictured in a Celtics uni), but not in the alphabetical list of players. It struck me as ironic. That’ll probably change in the next couple of days and he’ll get added to the list.

Well there goes LeBron
We wondered what repercussions there would be…
LeBron thinks we’re shady.
Kiss that lead goodbye. Turn the focus to Wade

Lebron is a pawn of Dan Gilbert
he’s brainwashed. Lebron has been handled with kid’s gloves since he was a kid. Dubbed “The Chosen One” as a sophomore in HS.
Do you think he can actually think for himself?

This is unnecessary.

he doesn't support peace in Africa
because he’s afraid it will hurt his marketing ability… I’m just saying he is controlled by agents to some extent.

and I wonder...
for the amount of money he gets paid for it, would any of us do different. Deep question I know, but think hard….

Although I'm a naturally outspoken guy, I'd try my damnedest to keep stay away from ...
contentious issues if I was some rich, famous dude who cared about my marketability. Of course, I’m a libertarian politically — as well as somewhat of a misanthrope — therefore, I really couldn’t care less about Africa. Neither my livelihood nor that of my friends and family are directly affected — with an emphasis on “directly” — by anything that goes down there.
In all seriousness, though, LeBron James has the right to prioritize things in whatever way he sees fit with his life. I, therefore, think it’s holier-than-thou, snobbish bull**** that anyone feels the need to chastise James on his apathy toward the plight of some regions in Africa.
Well, there’s my answer to the “[d]eep question” you posed here. I’m sure numerous folks will disagree with me, though, but it’s those differences that make each of us unique in our own special way.

reminds me
did LeBron get fined for his continued complaining about the refs calling him for that end of game travel last week? If not, he should shut his yap. Any other player or coach in the league gets fined for calling out the refs like that repeatedly for several days.

yeah, how disgusting is that
He can’t speak out for people getting murdered and killed by diseases, but he can speak out for a $50 million man who likes to throws stacks of ones into the air at Safari Show Club on SE Powell.
Lebron makes me want to puke sometimes.

just read the link
James seems to misunderstnad the facts as well, which isn’t surprising. He indicates that if Miles plays one more game, he’ll get what he deserves. Assuming he’s talking about his $18 million, then Miles is getting tha anyway, whether he plays one more game or not. Not sure else what he could be referring to with that comment, since Darius gains NOTHING by playing one more game. Where he would potentially gain at some point would be by having a 2nd 10 day contract or a season-long one. neither one of those things however, is triggered by him playing “one more game”
Rule #1 of nitpicking is to get it right.

I'm not surprised
that he thinks that – he is isolated
