Fire Nate!!! (Post-Phillie loss update)

It's obvious he has no idea what he's doing. He doesn't know what it takes to win games and his rotations are still whack... I mean, look at what he did to Sergio last night. Why would he do that? It's because he doesn't know what he's doing. And why does Travis keep getting playing time and plays called for him? Again, Nate doesn't know what he's doing. And why isn't LaMarcus going to be an All Star this year... this was supposed to be his big breakout year, right? Nate doesn't know how to develop big men and is holding LMA back. Same goes for Greg. What, you think it's just that Greg needs time to acclimate to the size and speed of the NBA game? Nope, it's Nate doing a bad job because he doesn't know what he's doing.

I bet you didn't realize it but this whole Miles debaucle is all Nate's fault, too. If Nate would've been a better mentor instead of "Sarge" when he came in as coach Miles would've been better equipped mentally and would be an outstanding citizen and teammate today. We'd all be laughing at how we got such a talent and community leader at the bargain price of $48,000,000. But Nate ruined him.

And we're totally underachieving at only 9 games over .500 when we really should be 11 or 12 over .500. Those 2 or 3 losses? Nate's fault... especially considering who we lost to... I mean, the freakin' Clippers?!? At home?!? Two or three games right now is the difference between 2nd in the West and 9th in the West, and we can't afford to let Nate ruin our shot at the second season.

Where have all of my fellow Nate-haters gone anyway? Just because we happen to be winning some games right now doesn't mean we should back off of him. We can't just call for his head when our beloved team has an off night and loses, we've got to be persistent in our pursuit of the best. He clearly isn't the best, nor a coach to lead this team to a championship or he would've done it already. It really is that easy, and that's why so many people end up being great coaches with winning records and championship rings.

Let's fire up the pressure! Ben, you did such an outstanding job with your Honor Terry Porter campaign... now that you've succeeded in you mission and have some spare time, maybe you could get the Fire Mr. Sonic campaign rolling?

Update: HAHA!!! After only one loss, this train is already moving along at a nice clip! BEdgers are throwing the coach under the bus left and right! Fact: Our guys had an off night offensively, and we were missing two of our top 5 scorers (for crying out loud)!!! Too predictable, fickle fans, too predictable! Cut Nate some slack already!

This part is dead on

"Where have all of my fellow Nate-haters gone anyway? Just because we happen to be winning some games right now doesn’t mean we should back off of him. "

If fact…it is more important that you get on Nate right now…if not, someone might accidently think that Nate is doing a good job…right Timmay?

Sigh.

Those who are concerned that Nate isn’t the coach of the future don’t change their opinion when the team wins or loses a few games in a row.

And the adjustments in last night's game...

I was wondering why the long stretch without Oden, when Pryz got his 5th foul. In retrospect, I think the staff recognized that Roy wasn’t clicked in, nor was Aldridge, and that we needed more scoring with those two off. And when Chicago applied pressure, it helped to have more ball handlers in (though the inbounds turnover on Rudy…sigh). It worked: Chicago had to leave someone open on the perimeter because all 5 on the court (4 when Bayless replaced flagrantly-fouled Rudy) needed to be guarded. Also, other than the backcourt violation, I don’t think Chicago’s pressing led to a turnover. Could check the play-by-play, but…

A successful use of the much-maligned Small Ball! It helps when your Small Ballers are better than theirs. With Dallas on Xmas, it wasn’t the case.

I don’t know why I wrote all this. I have no idea what was in the coaching staff’s collective head. The moves just seemed heady, to me

I also enjoyed Nate's experiment with the twin towers

And I appreciate he didn’t over-use it afterward to the point it would lose its effectiveness.

I figure I should note that, while I personally don’t feel like Nate’s the best in-game coach, it’s not like I think he’s incompetent or anything. It’s nice to see he’s shown some creativity recently. And, in last night’s game, he even left in the hot man instead of sitting him for a quarter.

I don’t think many people think Nate’s terrrrrible or anything. I know for my part, I’m just concerned that the all-offense (1st in offensive rating) no-defense (26th of 30) team, with a heavy offensive focus on jumpshooting that Nate’s building might win a fair number of regular season games, but is a strategy that doesn’t seem like it’s built for playoff success.

But I think he’s a good coach. But not perfect, obviously, and maybe not the greatest coach for going deep in the playoffs.

Yknow, these fanboys at this site might at least consider the possibility that things aren’t so black and white.

Let me just say that in building something ...

… you have to go in stages.

Right now Nate is going with those aspects his team can handle and working on getting improvement in areas they are weak. The team needs to get to the playoffs before they start worrying about winning there.

I've been meaning to list Nate's historical per-100 defensive efficiency as a head coach

I’ll try to look it up in a bit.

Someone always invariably blames his players though.

by Timmay! on Jan 13, 2009 7:15 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I look at the starting point guards he's had

Blake and Jack and Ridnour (with Earl Watson being an occasional exception) and wonder how teams have not averaged 190 pts against Nate-coached squads. But I’d like to see those per 100 numbers too

I did that earlier this season and got seriously flamed.

Suffice it to say the numbers are pretty wretched. It gets obvious looking at his coaching history that notwithstanding his rep, Nate’s an all-offense coach.

Funny how a true “defensive minded” coach like Scott Skiles actually gets players with terrible defensive reps (like ridnour) playing very respectable team defense, but Nate getting players with lots of good to great defensive reps can’t get any defense out of his squad.

It’s easy to get the numbers. Just look at the Sonics and Blazers pages on basketball-reference.com, his teams are consistently in the bottom third of the league along with joke squads like Don Nelson GS and Isiah era Knicks.

While I still have my frustrations with Nate

I tend to:

1. Not voice complaints every single time someone brings Nate up (because then I just turn into the “he doesn’t like Nate!” guy, which is really not true.)

2. Not talk about Nate’s shortcomings after wins, even if they’re clearly visible. That’s just being a debbie-downer after a win. We should enjoy wins after the game, and analyze them later, when the victory euphoria wears off.

It’s a matter of picking your battles and not sitting there harping on something repeatedly. I may think Nate’s skills are around NBA average at best, but I’m not going to sit here and say that over and over to everyone, like the crazy guy shouting on the street corner.

It’s not a matter of people “getting off his back when he’s winning”, as I think you may have misinterpreted things.

This is not taking into account the bandwagon-jumpers, so to speak, who seem to change their mood on a player or coach based on a 5-game stretch.

I'll say something Nice about Nate...

One thing I am very happy with this year is his use of the rookies. I love the fact that this year, along with a very respectable record, we are developing rookies. Rudy is getting 26 minutes a game, GO 23, Nic 17, and Bayless 8 minutes per game in the 17 he has played. That will pay enormous dividends down the line for us. And it is not easy to coach. Is there another team that regularly starts two, and has started three, rookies? That’s a serious question

Honestly

If KP really, really wanted a new coach, I think he would pick someone fresh and new. Someone he can mold a little, and who already has similar philosophy to KP. Likely a current assistant NBA coach, looking for his first chance at the big job, or (less likely) a college coach who looks ready for the big leap.

I don’t think he’d bring in a coach who’s been around the block 5 times. They’ve already got their beliefs drilled in deep.

Truth is, I expect him to re-sign Nate over the Summer, probably for a few more years.

but he spent some time in the successful San Antonio system and was involved in personel matters with us for a couple of years.

Also, according to Wikipedia, he was GM and coach of the ABA’s Kansas City Knights and led them to a championship in 2001.

Keep in mind I'm not disagreeing

But we could easily argue very similar qualifications for some assistant and college coaches that you just assigned to KP.

Keep all this mind with the perspective that I expect Nate to be re-signed. This whole discussion is for fun, not profit.

at the current stage…if we were to hire a new coach…yes i agree a fresh and hungry coach would be nice….but if we are championship bound and need someone to bring us to that next level than i’d go with an experienced and successful coach all the way. so i guess…nate is fine for this team as he is learning as well.

There are some things that need to be addressed. Namely the offense.

That is essentially the problem, name three other coaches in the NBA who have as few flaws and are still successful. You can't :)

Much less three coaches who would be available. Imagine we had Don Nelson instead. He would kill the development of our rookies. Larry Brown would ship every player away he found on the roster before starting to actually coach a little bit. Some recent hires have no coaching experience to speak of. Some play only veterans. Some play no defense. Some are just annoying personalities. It’s really weird out there.

When I hate nate , it’s when he started Travis instead of Batum opening Night. That was absurdly stupid and although I understand completely why he made that choice, I think it wrecked the game before the game even happened.

namely the offense...

you mean the highly efficient and league leading offense and sole reason our team actually wins games?

Not to mention that there has been much more movement and flow lately…

What kind of offense would you like?

yeah yeah

i get that the offense is the reason we are doing so well. What I should have elaborated upon was why.

I want more penetration from the guards . The team plays well when Steve Blake is scoring well from inside and outside the arc. In my opinion Steve stays on the perim. way too much. That is not wholly Nate’s fault but Blake has the ability to drive and the bigs, namely LMA can draw a defender or 2 out to make room for Blake or Bayless to do so (see Bayless last night) . Again not totally Nate’s fault .

I think the pace is too slow and paradoxically I want Oden to be the focus of the inside out strategy from the gate rather than LaMarcus. Nate needs to get Oden involved early. He does sometimes but more often then not it’s LaMarcus they try to establish down low first rather than Oden and I believe Oden drawing defenders out the gate is more efficient in the long run.

It’s not paradoxical as much as you think.

I’m pretty sure what you’re saying is that you’d like to see a faster pace… but if they’re not going to increase the pace, you’d like it to be because they’re playing an inside-out game with Oden (and IMO LaMarcus) for easy inside points, instead of jumpers.

Am I close?

Other than Roy (and Bayless)

the guards we have aren’t great at penetration. Neither Sergio nor Blake is a good finisher; and Rudy is best playing off the ball.

Neither Sergio nor Blake is a good finisher

Real shame too. They both have some driving ability that would be accentuated with some nice finishes.

I wonder if this is just an inherent hole in their games, or if they’ll grow and fix that weakness in time.

I’d love to see Sergio take a hit and make a layup like Bayless can.

I think Blake is an underrated finisher

I finishs fairly often if it is open…..The reason doesn’t go all the way to rim more is he is too smart to pull a Travis and drive into a triple team. What he is lacking though is a tear drop shot to compliment his drive when he can’t lay it up

he and sergio

both lack the confidence to finish…blake usually just dribbles it out and sergio in the past has usually just kicked it out to the corner three. at least he has been making an effort at trying to finish…but he just doesn’t do it with much confidence. i am happy to note that since sergio started trying to finish…even if he is unsuccessful our stellar offensive rebounding has often produced a score from a missed layup.

I think that is result of the system rather than the player

I think the offense right now is drawing defenders into the lane and with a guy like LMA who is more than capable to play both a midrange and post game efficiently, the team should be able to draw some of those defenders or at lease their attention outside. I think Blake could be a much better penetrator . It certainly would increase his value to our team. Dont even get me started on Sergio…
