Gameday Open Thread - Second Half

Wow. Gregory. Wow.  What a half from the big man.

While you wait for the second half to start, check out Casey's sweet piece on Travis and his fanpost poll.  I think Greg has gotta be the "most hated" nationally but Trav is definitely in the running here in the 503/541/whatever Washington area codes are.

dude you were NOT first

so don’t go around telling people you were first ‘cause it just ain’t so

You keep saying stuff that isn’t true and people are gonna start thinking you’re george bush or some nutjob republican like that.

The question we should really ponder is not why al-Zeidi could be so impolite as to throw his shoes at Bush, but why the dozens of other shoes in the room remained on people's feet, why no foot odor ever purifies the air at a White House press conference, why a man who throws his shoes at our president is more popular than our president himself.

Rudy is practicing for the Dunk Contest

He would hate to look lame and have no slick moves on his big day.

Worst case scenario for him, though, is his hair doesn’t look right.

He played poorly

No court vision, bad shots, no leadership. The team suffered when he was in.

He earned the yanking, it wasn’t the Nate classic “quick pull” or anything.

by Timmay! on Jan 12, 2009 8:01 PM PST up reply actions

Bayless came in, played well

Ran the team well enough, made some good shots, brought energy.

by Timmay! on Jan 12, 2009 8:01 PM PST up reply actions

it would be a mistake, IMO

Sergio is still a much better fit with the 2nd unit. Rex should get situational minutes (not every game), mostly at the 2. If Rudy is hurt, Rex looks like he can give us something as the backup 2.

I just think when Nate is looking for some energy and aggressiveness

he knows he can go to Rex and he will take it to the hole

Sergio just seems to dribble alot and not do too much

by Matt Daddy on Jan 12, 2009 8:06 PM PST up reply actions

well it feels like it could be on the horizon. im not quite ready to say that yet.

if i was sergio i’d be scratching my head. 5 minutes. really.

kind of felt like nate went with bayless as a matchup against rose. also think he wasn’t pleased about the possession with the dribble pounding like someone else mentioned.

by Ben Golliver on Jan 12, 2009 8:07 PM PST up reply actions

I just think with Roy being out Nate was able to see

that Rex is a real aggressive player more so than anyone else on the team. We really don’t have another guard who will drive the lane and take on their bigs (Rudy – sometimes, Sergio – almost never, Blake – not if his life depended on it)

by Matt Daddy on Jan 12, 2009 8:11 PM PST up reply actions

by Ben Golliver on Jan 12, 2009 8:23 PM PST up reply actions

Sorry I'll rephrase, my bad.

Have you seen any signs among coaching that Sergio’s playing time is related to how well he and Rudy work together on the court? Or is it because they do still feel he’s ahead of Bayless?

If this is a paying-your-dues thing, then understood.

by Timmay! on Jan 12, 2009 8:24 PM PST up reply actions

sergio has earned his minutes to this point, flat out.

nate is looking for consistency, zero turnovers, tough d, and ball movement on offense from his backup pg. no doubt sergio got a nice burst when teams hadn’t figured rudy out because they were putting up points in bunches.

but mega points out of the second unit are not the team’s top priority. bayless, with time, could score more than sergio — that’s not nate’s goal from the backup pg. when you hear bayless talk about what he needs to do defensively, that’s because nate and monty and dean are drilling him on that day in and day out. that’s why his intensity and energy are a real key — they make a difference on the defensive end and that’s a priority for nate.

not to mention that rudy is not the world’s best defender. puts even more pressure on the backup 1 to play hard on d and get back in transition as well.

by Ben Golliver on Jan 12, 2009 8:29 PM PST up reply actions

I'm glad I rephrased, that's exactly what I was wondering

Thanks for typing up this up. I think it covers any questions I had.

Even under the items Nate is looking for… Sergio must be aware how close Bayless is nipping at his heels.

Has this come up in your practice reports before, and I just missed it? If so, my bad.

by Timmay! on Jan 12, 2009 8:34 PM PST up reply actions

Really?

Sergio seems to dribble too much and not get much out of it. At least you know Bayless is headed towards the rim to put up a shot.

You can!

It’s not like its a trick he does, but he loves throwing this rubber band in the air, and sometimes he gets it in the shoe box, I almost always give him treats for a made shot. And he totally aims for the box now wanting a treat, thats gotta be a trained/learned action in his brain waves. If not oh well, he would be my first pick in the Cat Basketball League, so there.

Someone should do an analysis of Travis' shot selection tonight

I suspect we may learn that Travis took an unprecedented number of his shots from the paint. This may be a big breakout game for our man Travis.

The question we should really ponder is not why al-Zeidi could be so impolite as to throw his shoes at Bush, but why the dozens of other shoes in the room remained on people's feet, why no foot odor ever purifies the air at a White House press conference, why a man who throws his shoes at our president is more popular than our president himself.

by MT Suit on Jan 12, 2009 8:07 PM PST reply actions

Actually Travis had 2 shots in the paint (not counting fouls) he made them both

But Portland shot 14 baskets as layups or dunks making 9 per the NBA.com shot chart.

Blazers 9 games over .500

Last year the highest we got over .500 was 9 games. Can we get to 10 over vs. Philly?

Remember that last year @ Philly we blew an enormous 2nd half lead for a very tough loss. In the return game at home, we came back from down double digits for the last win of the 13 game streak.
