Is Outlaw Most Hated?
Travis Outlaw cares what you think, and according to Trav (or more appropriately, his cousin) you hate him. I find it hard to believe, but maybe he's right.
I didn't do a very good job of getting it accross in the post, but more than any other player I've been around, Travis is desperate to know the opinions people have of him.
"You think I'm going to get traded?"
"Which dunk did I get the highest on?"
"What you think of my defense?"
On and on.
More on Travis trying to improve his passing here. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Travis and Frye
are both beloved by Blazer fans for their personalities, but their play on the court makes people say unfortunate things about them.
Travis has become this year’s Jarrett Jack- the scapegoat for everything. I’ve been disappointed by Travis’ failure to develop consistency, and by his shot selection, and by the fact that he forgets about shooters on D (though the whole team does that), but there is absolutely no doubt he’s gotten more than his share of criticism this season— just like Jarrett Jack last year.

best post of the year Case!
But good luck convincing Travis of that. Even after hitting the game-winner against the Pistons, Outlaw still joked that he’s not feeling the love.
“They most definitely still hate me,” says Outlaw post-game. “They probably still be like ‘That’s still a bad shot; he just made it.’”
Wow, Travis can read my mind.

Nah, Frye is low man on the totem pole for Blazer love...
………………………… With Sergio, it’s sort of a clan war between Spain and the Dinosaur Cult. And I think many of us Rex-flacks have seen enough of him in game action by now to realize that he’s not quite ready this year and have thus chilled a little.
As for Travis, there is a segment that hates him. I’m pretty sure the roots are the piece in the Oregonian piece this summer that talked about him wanting more shots and more stats and being in love with his jumpshot. We all started watching him just a little bit differently after that. And I think there are some people that treat him differently because he’s to the NBA straight from high school, and he talks the way he does. I’m 100% sure that he catches some extra grief for that from some people.
Travis has SUCH GREAT ATHLETICISM that he seems like he’s totally wasting it and screwing up when he hoists sketchy jumpers instead of taking the ball to the rack. If he develops that knack, he’ll move from relatively unpopular with many to beloved by just about everyone in 5 or 10 games…
There is a hardcore Travis fan club also, not to be trifled with… Don’t cross the ATF unless you want your knees broken.

low man on the totem pole is different than most hated
Channing doesn’t play enough to be hated. He isn’t allowed to make enough mistakes to be hated. Everyone knows Channing sucks, has a great personality, and will be missed next year (personally, but not as a basketball player).
Travis and Sergio have more lovers and more haters than Channing. They get exposed more. They also shine more.
But I don’t think anybody really “hates” Channing like they hate Travis and Sergio. People don’t hate you when you’re irrelevant.
by Bust a Bucket on Jan 12, 2009 11:10 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
agreed with BaB
Channing doesn’t play enough to be hated…so basically since we can’t criticize him on his game all that much all we have is how he loves our city. Kinda hard to hate that. I dunno about it being Sergio fans vs Bayless fans at least in the same sense that it was Jack vs Sergio last year. There seems to be a good amount of fans of both our PGs…and there seems to be a small minority of just Sergio haters who don’t necessarily like any of our pgs as well.
The thing with Sergio and Trout is…with Sergio the bar is usually set low…so when he does something good its unexpected. With Trout he has set the bar so high at times that when he comes in people expect greatness at all times.

While Travis has taken MANY bad shots this year, the Pistons game winner was not one of them. He made a strong drive and got a good look close to the hoop, rather than putting up a 20 footer.

I think one of the biggest problems
is the fact that most Blazer fans are born and raised in the west which is a far cry from the south. I know speaking for myself that the south is the last part of the country that I would want to go, and yes a lot of that is simply from what I have heard or read, as I have never been there, but a lot of us are not used to that type of person (a southerner.)
Travis is different, Brandon, Marty, Bayless and Frye are all west coasters, Gregzilla are both from the midwest, LMA is from TX and of course Rudy, Sergio and Batman are all Euros. Blake is from Miami but that is not really “south” as much it is Florida.
I definatly think that his drawl and good ol boy nature can sometimes be misconstrued as “dumb” here in Portland, but what do we want from our basketball players? Nobel Laureates? I know we have high standards here but cmon.
True he sometimes lacks on his shot selection, but he has improved a ton over the past few years and add in the fact that his early development was screwed by the situation when he was drafted, ie loaded vet team with a bunch of malcontents, that in itself was detrimental to his development, meaning that he still has room for improvement.
Sometimes it is exasperating watching Travis but for what he does, his price and his effect on overall team chemistry I think he has a valuable place o the team.

you think people think outlaws dumb because he's from the south?
people think he is a bone head (sometimes) because he makes bone head plays. He’s 4 years past his rookie year now. That being said, he’s just more polarizing than anything. well, he and sergio. for everyone that absolutely hates him, theres another person who absolutely loves him. I like him (some) because I feel like he’ll always be content to be a sixth man, he’ll never complain and always be a good locker room guy that can occasionally contribute. and by contribute I mean rebound, play D, block shots, run the floor. NOT SHOOT CONTESTED FADE AWAY 18 FOOTERS. when he wants to just sit back and do that all game long, yeah, I’m a hater I guess.
The Blazers as a whole are far more like my wife than like me in the sense of their physicality on defense.

honestly
there seems to be a very direct relationship between how much Blazers players are liked and their whiteness, at least in relationship to their talent.
E.G. – Sergio. He’s okay. People love him. He is white
Bayless – He has sucked; but has potential, and is light skinned. People love him.
Travis – He is a solid player, has skills that no one else on the team has. He is dark skinned, and people hate him.
The outlier here is Aldridge, who is modestly dark skinned (i’d say, “even-toned” for an African-American) and well-liked.
Other than that, we definitely love our white players.

I find this tidbit fascinating because Travis is thinking about and referring to gibberish on this blog after he makes a game winning shot. Is he joking? Hopefully. Is it weird this is even in his head?

It's always good to RAISE these topics...
……………………….. But it ain’t so.
I don’t prefer Pryz to Oden because he’s a haole, but rather because he’s a skilled veteran and a warrior and I see Oden as raw, a bit clumsy, a project…
I’d trade Sergio for Brandon Bass in 0.025 seconds. That’s got nothing to do with skin pigmentation and everything to do with other factors.
I’m convinced that for the big majority of fans, performance and personality trumps ethnicity. But this is a predominantly white region of the country and it’s always good to be asking ourselves these sorts of questions to make sure that it ain’t so…

Race is a reality
manzell seems to understand the whole white/light/dark thing that goes on. It’s a reality in life whether we like it or not. Shouldn’t be offensive. If we don’t recognize and understand it we’ll never get beyond it.
by danielfarrell on Jan 12, 2009 8:12 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, racism is a reality
Perhaps I was a bit harsh, but I’m not pleased when people turn to the race card as a crutch or out of reflex. I’ve known people who’ve done that when it was completely unsupported as if it makes them progressive and forward thinking and it always annoyed the bejesus out of me.
There are times that the topic should be broached even if it makes people unhappy. I get that. But there are also other times that it is totally inaccurate and irrelevant, and half assed observation and analysis with a conclusion already decided from the get go does not impress me.
Perhaps I’m taking it a bit personally. I mean, I am a critic of Travis the player, but it’s because of his frequent poor decision making. However, I’m a HUGE fan of Travis the person. There are few players I’d rather see have a big game… his post game interviews are endearing and I like seeing him with a jump to his step.
As Timmay points out, this “direct relationship” falls apart if you take one moment to consider the roster. Who do you think are the most loved players on the team? Ummm, probably Roy, LMA, and Oden. Blake has been steady, great this year even, a starter, and he’d be NOWHERE near the top of that list. How does manzell conclude that people love Sergio and hate Travis by comparison? How do you even measure that? That’s news to me. Must be skin color.
This is basketball. If somebody wants to dislike a player because of skin color, that person picked the wrong sport. I know it’s unavoidable that racism is a factor among a portion of the NBA fanbase, but I think the influence is much lower than manzell suggests.

With the possible exception of one team (which I will not mention),
Almost every player in the NBA has popularity levels that are proportional to either
a. Their level of play
b. Their potential level of play.
Portland’s 5 most popular players arguably are:
1. Brandon Roy
2. Greg Oden
3. Rudy Fernandez
4. Lamarcus Aldridge
5. Nicolas Batum
Each of them are popular in proportion to one of the two things I listed above.
Middle ground of popularity is easy: Martell, Blake, Joel.
Here are the arguably least popular players:
1. Travis Outlaw
2. Channing Frye
3. Sergio Rodriguez
All of these players are have popularity that is inversely proportional to one of the two reasons listed above. Sergio would be higher on this list if he wasn’t passing alley-oops to one of the most popular players on the team.
There is no race correlation going on here. Look, you can see racial tension in almost anything if you want to (this isn’t specific to race issues either… it’s why the term truthiness exists). But when you look closer, it’s all about performance and/or potential.

I love Travis
And here’s why. He cares. He wants to win. He is a good teammate. He gives it 100% every time he is on the court.
Does he make mistakes? Sure. Does he sometimes take bad shots? Uh huh. Does he try to improve? Yes.
Do we see his incredible athleticism and want more? Darn right we do.
But put that all in a jar, shake it around and what you have is a good person with a good heart who is a good teammate and wants to win. And actually helps us win more often than not. And when he isn’t good, well then we have plenty of other options.
Hate is a strong word and one my mother told me never to use. She’s right.

We need to show Travis more support
I really don’t like to hear that one of the players on this team feels hated even if he is joking. I think it would be great if we could do something special for Travis to show him he is welcome in PDX!

To be fair, Casey says Travis' cousin is telling him we all hate him
When in reality, it’s just people frustrated at his shot selection.
I’m not going to hold a love-in for Travis, just to make his cousin tell him we like him.

Think about his play the last few games
Think about the great teams that have had instant offense off the bench. Think of how many of these players took bad shots. Every one of them. That’s what made them great scorers and instant offense off the bench. Everyone around here expects perfection or darn near close to it. Travis is and can be an even greater factor on this team. These last few games show it.

My opinion of Travis…
- hasn’t been conveyed in this thread.
- really won’t change based on a 5-game stretch inside 6 seasons. Whether he plays well or poorly during that stretch.
I’m all about how he’s doing long-term.

Not you specifically
But you referenced his shot selection. And i agree that we need to look long term as well. Last year he was pretty darn consistent after the Memphis game. This year not so much. But maybe his latest game winner will be the same impetus as last year.

Hate is a strong word
Yes, sometimes Travis does not make the best decisions. However, he is only 23 and he has gotten better every year he has been in the league. So, we can only imagine that he will get better. The good thing is that he’s nowhere near his potential. There are a lot of good things about Travis, case in point the game tonight.

Let's start a campaign for hatred misdirection.
I hated Travis when he first got into Portland for being added to a ‘jail blazers’ team with the name Outlaw. Since then, he’s been one of my favorite players. Now that I think about it, there’s really nobody on this team that I would like to see leave. There are some players that frustrate me at times (Sergio) and some players that I don’t believe fit on the team (Ike). Fortunately, this team really plays as a team. I don’t want to see any deals yet with even peripheral players like Channing. I’d rather see them together for an entire year, as I think all the pieces are in place for a deep playoff run.
I say we all encourage Blazers fans to start hating Shavlik for sandbagging. He was an all star in street clothes tonight, feigning injury so he can write a best-selling sci-fi thriller. Wait what?

I have to be honest
I have been critical of Travis in the past and was excited by Batum’s early play because I thought it would make him an expendable piece that was valuable enough to bring back something good for the team. As the season has progressed, I can’t imagine we would be able to replicate some of the things he can do with just any player, I am specifically talking about Gerald Wallace here.
Travis gives the Blazers something that not too many teams have: a second option in the fourth quarter that is almost as deadly as their first. There are things that are frustrating about Travis’ game but he is a special player that would be greatly missed if traded. He has games where he is a no-show and those stick out more than other players’ no-show games because a) when he no-shows, he excells at it and b) winning becomes much easier when he shows up to play.

I like Travis. A lot. Especially on a night like this. Yet there are limits.
Amazing athleticism. Great personality, just a laid-back humble guy. Probably one of the most popular guys inside the team, who maintains friendships with everyone from LMA to Roy to Greg to the international players. I wish him nothing but success in the NBA. However in terms of how his overall play has progressed and where it has stalled, I might love him more depending on who we could get for him in a trade :)
Don’t lie, you have thought about it too. Travis could be a much bigger star on another team where he gets the regularly gets the kind and number of shots he talked about in his interview over the summer. E.g. he could really become a sixth man of the year candidate or even an All-Star under guys like Don Nelson and Mike D’Antoni, who love quick athletic guys who can also shoot from outside – and are fine if those guys don’t completely kill you on defense. Then we would say “see, Travis was really really good”. He is, but not so much in the versatility department on both ends of the floor where Nic figures to have a brighter future that might fit better within what the Blazers need long term from their wing player. That said, Travis is an awesome guy off the bench. Few teams can bring such a player in when they could need one.

Travis has a body that is a larger version of MJ.
But he doesn’t have the mind of Jordon.
Personally I love Outlaw. He has stated that he wants to start, that’s just not going to happen. I think Travis will re-evaluate his desire to start, and be happy coming off the bench. If Travis can be happy with that then we’ve got a great 6th man.
If Travis keeps improving – he may very well start one day. He looked a little like MJ out there tonight.

But this post seriously pisses me off. I have a ton of respect for the work done on the Sports Page for the Oregonian, and on Oregon Live, but this is a fansite, and yes I realize you are a fan, but why, as a paid journalist stir the pot at a teams fansite? What motivation do you have other than to get a large response knowing that your name will generate responses almost ten fold?
The post itself wasn’t negative at all to Outlaw, but the subject matter is something debated on here at a near religious level, last thing the team, or Travis needs is a focal Blazers Media type going out of his way to push the issue even farther.
Like I said I’m pissed, so I hope I came across the way I wanted, if not oh well.

Yes, I agree.
Thats what I was trying to get across when I referred to Ben’s propping Casey. The response I got was defensive and suggested CH’s story provided some glimmer of insight into Travis’ personality.
How this was achieved in as few a words as it was only serves to reinforce the notion said fraternalism is mere hob-nobbery at Travis and his fans expense and we are just lackeys apparently pulling on their shirt-strings for more penny candy screaming adoringly “Oh Thank you, thank you, thank you.” Holdahl needs a new box of crayons if he expects some negative little blurb about Outlaw to conjure up some new image of him around here.
Yep, this place often resembles the MSP for patting each others backs regardless of the pablum being puked.

It just infuriates me after all the callous remarks about Travis, his BBIQ, his IQ, his homegrown background, even the way he talks, that to then see an article about how he is hated…. I just don’t get it.
The criticism about his game doesnt ruffle my fur, but how is an article that suggests PTB fans actually HATE the guy tantamount to fandamonium? This guy deserves so much better.
Ben replied back to my first post when I ranted about his calling CH’s article sweet, saying it provided a glimpse into Travis’ personality. Where? By possibly joking about being hated? Since its a 6 piece pie I’ll reserve further judgement until the crust is completely digested, but it doesn’t make me remorseful about being upset that Travis gets recognition in this pertetual manner.
I do apologize for raising the eyebrow of anyone offended by my vitriolic lexicon.

I don’t know why’ you’re so ticked about him doing this. He was blogging here before he was paid anywhere. Is there a reason that, that right should suddenly be taken away? I love Travis Outlaw
met him right after he got his extension, and he was the most approachable, down to earth pro athlete I’ve ever encountered in person (and I’ve met Roy…no knock on Roy either) at a time when most people would be riding high and thinking they were all that
While I dislike his shot selection when his shots aren’t falling, I think it would be foolish to get rid of a guy who’s our second best option when the offense stagnates. Honestly once Martell gets back I think we should just stop messing around switching his positions back and forth and confusing the guy, and keep him as our backup 4. I know he gets a lot of BBIQ knocks, but swinging between the 3 and the 4 is one of the hardest position swings because you’re going between wing and post and likely have as different of responsibilities defensively and in offensive set plays as possible in a switch between two positions on the court.
also, has anyone noticed that the ball doesn’t come flying out of his hands nearly as often when he goes up to dunk on someone anymore? That (along with his improved 3 point shot) points towards good things in the future IMO. He’s improved a part of his game every year, and I see no reason that won’t continue. I think he should end up going to the rack more as A. opponents have to rush to close out on his jumper and B. he realizes when he drives he gets to dunk on somebody instead of just lose the ball off the back iron

I’ve said it before, will say it again, and will repeat EVERY other person on here when I say….
I LOVE TROUT, I just hate his fade-away jump shots. That’s all! And when I use terms like “God Trout, what the hell is wrong with you?!?” or “I HATE U!!!” after he takes a horrible shot, I say it to EVERYONE when they do something dumb that can cost us a game. Case in point, Blake has pissed me off prolly as much as Outlaw when he drives to the hoop and then stops, looks around for someone and doesn’t just take it to the hole. Rudy has pissed me off when he attempts a flashy pass to Pryz (who we all know isn’t the greatest at handling the ball), Channing pisses me off when he hovers at the 3-point line, and Bayless pisses me off when he drives to the basket but doesn’t make any contact. Every player screws up, and Trav did not have a good start to the season. I think people talk about him because they know he can, and has done better than what he showed us in the beginning of the season. Hopefully now, with some playtime at the PF position and with a couple of good games under his belt, Trav can be more consistant and the complaining about him will stop.
And for Travis’ cousin: You seriously suck for telling him people hate him. Totally uncool.

Hate is much too strong a word
Hate is what you feel for terrorists who kill innocent people because they don’t think the same. Or the guy who abuses animals for the fun of it. I don’t hate any of the Blazers. I don’t even dislike any of them.
To quote someone above (bow4meow?) – Travis drives me crazy. You don’t know if you’re going to get SuperTrout or a fish out of water. But I don’t hate him. I don’t dislike him. I love to see him do well. But cringing at some of his on-floor and off-season decisions does not equal hate. I don’t have the confidence in him that I have in some of the others but that doesn’t mean I hate him.
I hope that “hate” has just become another watered down word that really has little meaning anymore. Don’t you hate it when that happens? :-)

I HATE the use of the word hate
People use it in such mild manner ways and toss it around.
I love outlaw and when I look at him as a role player, I’m happy. He’s going to have up and down games and that can frustrate me. The guy has amazing talent, but he also makes some plays that leave me scratching my head and fails to recognize situations as they come up. Really, I’d recommend to him to learn HOW to learn. What works best for him to figure out when he’s in those situations and know how to act. Different people can learn their instincts in different ways. On the court it has to be instinct and for travis, it looks like it hasn’t translated over to that. He thinks and then the moment is lost or he acts and the move is off.
I do not hate travis. I do think he’s a person with talent that should be on trade bait, but that’s not a diss to him so much as a recognition that he’s not the big three but he IS good.
My other gripe about travis is a wish that he’d attack the basket more often. Then again I wish that with just about all the blazers.
Fans can be idiots sometimes. Even me. (Just so you know i’m not excluding myself) We ride an emotional high and low because we CAN be rather fanatical about our teams. Travis is part of our team though. I think we just wish he could take that potential of his and turn it into a little more reality.
That said, I love how fearless he is. He’s not afraid to shoot and he has a short memory in that regards. He can provide the team energy and off the court he’s an awesome guy that brought two of our leaders together. If travis could find his consistency and grow his instincts, his flexibility is something that I’d want to keep. If he stays inconsistent then I think he’ll forever be possible trade bait.
Love the guy though.

Regarding "hatred" for players:
It is justified because of the position they are in. They are paid to play a game that entertains us. You don’t “hate” the guy that pumps your gas, even if he spills the last dollars worth down the fender. But when he does an awesome job of pumping gas, you don’t buy a shirt with his name on it and put his poster up on the wall either.
I don’t think a single person that says they hate Outlaw really hates him. They may despise the way he plays and wish he was off the team, but if they saw him on the street they’re not going to spit in his face because of bad shot selection. Soccer fans maybe…
So obviously Outlaw takes this stuff to heart. Is it fair? Would it be fair if there was a message board about the same gas pumper dude with thousands of posts saying he sucks? Probably not. But for an NBA player, I say it is unfortunate, but completely fair. Goes with the job.

Justified because of their position means as a public figure whose job function is to be in the spolight, not because they are rich or privledged or for any other reason. A penniless street performer puts himself into the same category.
