Junk a Dozen Days in (1/12/09)
OK, let's play doctor (because where else would you go for medical advice besides BlazersEdge?).
Here's my symptom: For the past two days I've been dizzy like crazy. I wake up each morning feeling light headed and slightly off balance, and it stays around all day and night. 48 hours now.
No, it's not some gas leak in my house because no one else feels it.
No, it's not my raging alcoholism, actually I've been taking it fairly easy.
No, it's not my illicit drug intake, which has been absolutely nil for nearly a month now.
I've been eating fairly well.
Getting enough liquids and such.
What's making me so dizzy?
Anyway,
super excited for the game tonight. I've been checking Denver and Utah's schedules, as well as Phoenix and San Antonio ... oh hell, I've been looking at the whole West trying to figure out where we sit come playoff time. I like Seat Six.

But seriously folks…. My vote is for an inner ear infection. Or maybe you are like Liza Minelli’s character on Arrested Development and have “a severe case of vertigo.”

Well, I said I've slowed down, not stopped.
As for the non-alcoholic intoxicants, they’ve stopped completely.
Two years ago, when I lived in the Caribbean, I had roughly 6-9 drinks a day, more on weekends. That went on for about a five year stretch.
For the last two years, it’s been more like 1 or 2 a day, with days were I don’t have any.
Yeah, I still drink it up on occasion, but not nearly what I was doing.
It’s just a Caribbean lifestyle thing. that said, i do know non-drinkers there. Two, in fact.

I get ear infections all the time, and one of the two is extremely painful, while the other one makes me completely dizzy and off balance. I just can’t remember which one is which :)

Take some nasal decongestant (Sudafed) and see if that helps at all. Sometimes just loosening up all the tubes from the nose/ear/throat can help.

I've had the same inner-ear problem.
The first time it hit me I was standing at the sink and the loss of balance made me fall over sideways as if someone had grabbed my arm and yanked hard. I got the whirlybirds and had to lie on the floor of the men’s room for an hour, which was probably the low point of my day. It’s hit me a couple of times since then. I’m wondering what will happen if I’m driving a car next time…
I’m glad I never fly. The last time I did, I must have had an air bubble trapped in my head (yeah, I’m an airhead, bubblehead, etc. ha ha) and when the cabin pressure dropped, the bubble expanded to the point that I thought my head was going to explode. So yeah, take a decongestant an hour before your flight leaves or be sure to wear a plastic bag over your head.

My mom had a horrible inner ear infection when I was a kid and I remember it being really, really bad. There were some balance related nausea issues as well as the aches and pains related to an ear infection. Antibiotics cleared it up but only after a few days. She still recalls that week as one of the worst of her life.
That being said, sudafed and a half gallon of maker’s mark should clear it up. You need to free base the sudafed though. That’s the only way it will work.

Benign Positional Vertigo? (Not the Jimmy Stewart kind, but the one that Jamal Mashburn had)
Benign positional vertigo (BPV)-or simply vertigo-is a disorder of the inner ear. You feel a sudden sensation of movement or spinning when you move your head or hold it in a certain position.
The inner ear is located within your skull and consists of the cochlea, a chamber shaped like a snail shell, where sound is transformed to nerve signals for the brain, and 3 semi-circular canals that function like a gyroscope, relaying information about head position and movement to the brain.
The semicircular canals contain fluid and special sensors that, when disturbed, inform the brain of a change in head position. It is thought that when you have BPV small particles become dislodged within the inner ear and then bounce around when your head moves, triggering faulty signals that your head is still moving even after it stops. This sensation of movement or imbalance when you are not moving is called vertigo, the primary symptom of benign positional vertigo.

My son just got over an ear infection and I’m hearing from all sorts of people that the thing to do is to blow smoke (from a cigarette, candle) into the ear canal and hold it in there for a minute or so.
Should fee nearly instant relief. Let me know if it works!

If healthy, Gerald Wallace would be awesome for us, and while I have always been a Martell fan, Wallace is obviously a lot better at basketball.
Martell is signed to a great contract and is very young, we’ll figure it out. Same with Batum.
Wallace can also play PF, along with SF, and will guard the best player every night.
I sincerely hope Larry Brown is being an idiot again and has decided Wallace is who he needs to trade, because that would be awesome. RLEC and whoever outside of Roy/Oden/LMA/Bayless/Rudy/Joel/Batum and I’ll be happy.

cant give medical advice
I can tell you, assuming your post is not a joke about cleaning up your life by avoiding drugs and alcohol, that there is a significant period of recovery where your body adjusts to the changes. The numbing effects of intoxicants are indeed quite powerful, and may or may not be related to your dizzy spells. Whether or not they are, is a question you should really go to see your Doctor to have answer. Despite the good intentions of Bedgers everywhere, nobody here is going to stick that lighted telescopic wand in your ear.
Good luck.

I can't give you medical advice either because it technically makes you my patient and I take on liability
and since my NY license is inactive, I would be practicing without a license and have no malpractice coverage….so this is not advice to you, merely some generalities about others I have seen with similar symptoms.
One of the more odd causes are calcium stones in the ear canals (otoliths):
Stress can cause postural hypotension (lightheaded when going from sitting to standing…)…
Mechanical receptors in the cervical spine effect spatial orientation…
Most common are middle and inner ear probs…

I also like how the title referred not just to the central doubt at the heart of the play, but doubt at an ecclesiastical, societal, and personal level as well. I’m not into that “sport” much, but it looks very promising. MIckey Rourke could be at least nominated for an Oscar for his performance, after completely screwing up that fits the role very well. Bill Simmons had a fascinating article about it:

Great Bill article
and sounds like a great movie. Wrestling was part of my adolescence before I gradually outgrew it; I’d like to take a trip on the sordid side down memory lane. People rag on Simmons, but that article’s an example of why he’s a genuinely talented writer and not just some pop-culture-spouting everyman, just with a platform.

Slumdog was great all around, as was QCO Benjamin Button.
Revolutionary Road was really heartwrenching and hard to process. A fantastic movie about being an adult, being trapped in your life, and ultimately trusting yourself and your spouse. Tough stuff.

I dunno. It’s close. Some people have said they didn’t like Button and I don’t understand why. I thought it was pretty deep, where others said it was shallow.

Hollinger says the Mavs will miss the playoffs... by a lot
He has them finishing 5 games out.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/hollinger/playoffodds
From his Insider Gems:
“The Mavericks have fallen to 18th in the Power Rankings and as of Monday project to finish with only 43 wins and a 21-24 finish to their season.”
“Sunday’s game in Sacramento was expected to be one of only a few easy wins in a 14-game stretch that started Friday”
“Nine of Dallas’ next 12 opponents have winning records, and two of the ones that don’t are the misleadingly sub-.500 Milwaukee Bucks and the suddenly spry Philadelphia 76ers. Plus, eight of the 12 contests are on the road.”

That isn't unsurprising
Coolstandings gives the Mavs a 58.7% chance of making the playoffs. A week ago they were sitting at 81.6%

A couple Miles related nuggets from Marc Stein's chat:
Troy (Portland): As a Blazer fan who is very proud of the direction that the team is heading, I’m completely embarrassed by the threatening email sent out by our president. What can Portland do to recover from this PR nightmare? Fire Larry Miller??
Marc Stein: (5:34 PM ET ) Can’t imagine that e-mail was sent out without an ownership directive. So I can’t see Miller getting all the blame. People have short memories in the NBA. The focus will be back on the floor eventually.
Joe (Portland): How long (games, weeks, seasons) does Darius Miles play in the NBA?
Marc Stein: (5:36 PM ET ) I say seasons. Which is why I never, ever understood how anyone could rule that Miles, at 27, was finished. He wanted to keep trying to play . . . and we’ve seen that microfracture patients often need two years just to close to where they were. Maybe Miles will really never be able to play more than 10 minutes a game. But maybe he needs three or four years to get back to a decent level as opposed to a year-plus for Kenyon Martin and the five minutes or so that it took Amare Stoudemire.
Marc Stein: (5:39 PM ET ) In short, when you get past all the rhetoric and potential legal battles that might be waged over Milesgate in the future, I don’t think the cap relief that Portland just lost was cap relief Portland was ever entitled to. Miles can still play a little. He’s done enough in his five-minute cameos with the Grizz to show us that he’s still an NBA player.

Looks like he is in the “he would have been worth more as an expiring contract in 2010” camp. We will see.

I got a new mitt yesterday
I got one for Christmas but it was too small. I went to get one for my wife too and her hand is so small that her mitt is pink and only cost $20.00.

She's only 4' 10"
I luck out a lot when it comes to buying her stuff. I went to buy her a jacket for snowboarding and and it was half the price because she fit into a child’s jacket. Same thing with her sleeping bag. She still manages to find expensive shoes though.

Darius' salary
I read somewhere that the Blazers are paying his salary and then later I read that insurance is paying it. What’s the truth and do you have a link?

I commented on Blogabull on this
I am fairly certain it’s split 60 – 40 as long as he is retired, with the insurance paying the bigger share.

What about Raef?
I thought his wasn’t picked up until 41 games.

Long term injuries are handled different from medical retirements (different sections of the CBA)
Raef won’t retire this year due to his shoulder.
by Norsktroll on Jan 13, 2009 8:34 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Pretty sure I read it's 80% insurance/20% Blazers
From Henry:
Blazers would miss out on $14.4 million in insurance compensation they would have claimed had Miles been inactive. By playing ten games, Miles essentially proves the doctors wrong and, therefore, can’t legitimately be regarded as having a career-ending injury.
($18 million salary x 80% = $14.4 million covered by insurance)
Also, another quote from the same article:
If Miles doesn’t play 10 games:
• The Blazers would owe Miles $1.8 million. This represents the 20% of Miles’ salary that insurance doesn’t cover.
by Corvid on Jan 13, 2009 1:12 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
The 80/20 split is for Raef, the 60/40 for Miles. At least that's the numbers I have read
by Norsktroll on Jan 13, 2009 1:41 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Interesting
You think Abbott’s got his numbers wrong on this one? His definition of “medically retired” certainly seems a little off.
