Do the Blazers have to make a trade now?
While this post is not about Darius Miles it does reference the situation caused by him playing again. I think it's safe to say the blazers are going to lose whatever cap space is involved with the Darius Miles saga. So does that make Raef LaFrentz contract as a trade chip more important? I'm not interested in plowing all the previous threads to find the related conversation that I'm sure exists.
My question is simple. Assuming the Blazers want non-drafted players to add to this team for it's championship run, do the Blazers now have to make a trade involving RLEC rather then just letting it expire? Once we resign Oden we will be well over the cap and possibly even when we resign Roy and LMA. So then, is it true that due to Miles coming back on the cap the FA field narrows considerably and forces Portland to trade rather then be a player in the FA market? Someone help me out here!

trade
In my opinion, there isn’t anything on the free agent market that would be all that attractive at the positions of need on the Blazers, I think they should go for a trade anyway.

Ok...
the way I understand it, the Blazers would have 39.9 million dollars on their payroll this summer if Miles doesn’t sign with Memphis. This also assumes that the team options on Blake and Outlaw are picked up.
The cap is projected to be around 59-60 million. If Darius’ salary went back on the cap, that would take our team payroll to 48.9 million. This means that our cap space would be roughly ten million, as opposed to the 19 million we would have it Darius did not go back on our books.
It all comes down to the player that we want. If it’s a guy who is above ten million or so, we wouldn’t be able to sign them.
Raef’s contract is a great trading chip because of the insurance benefit… This doesn’t mean the team has to trade. It depends on what kind of player we are going after.

No
I think we are set for the future. If KP really wants to sign someone this summer, he still can. He might lose some other assets (Frye and Diogu) without getting anything back for them except cap space, but it can still happen. All things remaining as they are and KP waives Frye and Diogu (and Darius goes back on the books), Portland is around 14 million under the cap.

Oops
The list I was looking at did not have Martell’s new contract on the books. It is estimated at $20 million over 4 years which would bump total committed salary cap without Ike and Channing but with Darius’ contract at just over $51 million. Depending on where the cap falls for next year, it would leave the Blazers with about $8-$10 million to spend on a free agent.
Roster would include: Oden, Aldridge, Webster, Roy, Blake, Rudy, Outlaw, Pryzbilla, Sergio, Bayless, Batum, and four open spots.
Do we need a trade? I would say no, but if you think we need to add a high profile type player, it would make a trade the more likely way to obtain that type of player. Although that could happen in the summer after renouncing Ike and Channing and letting RLEC expire.

I think the Miles $$ going back on our books creates a situation...
… where RLEC is most valuable to us in a trade. Look for us to use RLEC to go after an upgrade at SF or PG. Gerald Wallace and Kirk Hinrich come to mind as distinct possibilities.

Is there a way to skip from new comment to new comment?
I don’t even open the huge threads any more because I don’t have the patience to find all the new posts that just barely highlighted in yellow.

Just trade for Miles ...
guarantee his contract, then sit him for the rest of the season. Solves all our problems right there. Ike and a conditional second rounder sounds about right …

For some reason...
I don’t think we can do that.

Tinkering
Raef is a trading chip, and Diogu and Frye have not been resigned. These two players will be moved, because none are getting the playing time to justify the salary they’ll likely get to become third options off the bench, and the Blazers aren’t going to want the cap holds that come from keeping them around. In this context, yes, KP will make a move. However, none of this is likely to get the Blazers a front line player, if that’s what some are looking for. And other than possibly throwing one of the five guards into this mix, I can’t see much reason to trade anyone else at this point. From where I sit, we could end up with draft choices, or perhaps a single solid backup PF, or some such combination. We’re not going to get a starting PG for this group, and I’m not sure the Blazers think that they need to try to get a frontline SF, given the Batum/Webster/Rudy group that can play that position.
Whatever happens with Miles will happen. That’s out of our hands. Keep in mind that if he hangs around where he’s likely to be – which is a third team player, then his history indicates that he could very well reinjure himself. So this story isn’t over. Let’s face it, in five years he had 2 seasons where he only played 1/2 the games, one where he played 3/4’s of them, and 2 where he didn’t play at all. Whatever the reasons, his body just doesn’t take the pounding. And if he reinjures the knee, then the cap space will come back.
In the end, we’ll still need to make a few moves – and KP likely will.

Further
I’m not convninced the Blazers have to make a trade to have a championship run – at least not this year. We’re 22-14 on a team with 4 rookies and 6 second year players. The center play has improved this year with the addition of a rookie, Roy and Aldridge, both third year players have stepped up their games, and Rudy and Trout have provided a spark off the bench. At the same time, the only reason we’re unsettled at SF is because Webster hasn’t suited up. If he had, then we’d have a look at the reason the Blazers resigned him – which, I suspect, is because they’re convionced he – in his 3rd year – will step up his game just like Roy and Aldridge did their’s. Throw Batum into that mix – and we could well have the skills we need to play with Oden/Roy/Aldridge. As far as PG, Blake has been giving us some better minutes this year. I don’t know that Sergio will ever be a starter, nor how Bayless will progress, but from where I sit, this is the only spot we may address – and I don’t think now is the time we’ll do it.

I'm wondering
Would other GMs be reluctant to deal with the Blazers at this point?
It sounds like they aren’t too enamored with our recent attitude. Obviously, if the deal is good for their team, then they probably have to, but I wish we hadn’t tarnished our reputation trying to cover our own screw-up (signing Miles to that deal in the first place).
