Around SBN: Iron Bowl Thoughts... Right Now

You're falling out of my favor, Rudy.

Rudy,

Don’t get me wrong, man.  I fully appreciate your physical prowess and superior skill.  I am not worthy.

But when the Blazers purchased your rights, I was a huge fan.

I searched the web tirelessly for months, awaiting your decision to leave Spain for the NBA.

I watched all the YouTube videos from your time in the ACB league.

I witnessed your Pre-Season highlights against Sacramento.

I consciously drafted you way too early in all of my fantasy leagues.

I saw your game against the Rockets.

I listened to you be named a “Straight…stone…cold…killer” on national television.

  I watched more YouTube.

I read all of your entries on El Blog de Rudy.

I told my little sister to get me your Spain T-shirt at Just Sports for Christmas.

I will probably still votavion en el NBA Concuso Dunk.

But you see, Rudy, there are two types of players in this league.  There are boys, and there are Men.  Brandon Roy and Joel Pryzbilla are Men.  Even Steve Blake falls in that category.  I like them partially because of their game, but mostly for their grit and determination.  These Men are tough and they show it.  They don’t back down.  They don’t make excuses.  But, you Rudy?  You will never be considered a Man in my book due to the way you act on the Basketball court.

First, when you actually do take the ball to the hoop, likely with the right hand, time and time again you never fail to go out of your way to shy from contact.  I'm serious, have you ever had a shot blocked before?  Are you aware you only attempt 2.1 free throws per game?  That’s less than Larry Hughes, Udonis Haslem and Luke Ridnoir.

And also, do you really need to shamelessly adjust your hair all the time?  If Brandon pats you on the head, just take the darn head pat without fiddling with your hair afterwards.  My girlfriend thinks you fixing up your hair is cute, Rudy, and that’s exactly what it is.

But the dagger in my Rudy-fandom’s heart, occurred on two separate occasions against opponents I don’t recall.

In the first instance, the dagger merely pierced my skin and penetrated my breast plate.  In a somewhat crucial part in the game, the Blazers had the ball and the offense was stagnant.  Your turn to test the defense came with about 8 seconds left on the clock.  You panicked a bit, and it lead to a shuffle of your feet and a dribble off your foot as you were trying to regain your balance.  You fell to the ground as play resumed.  You appeared to have injured your elbow and were on the ground for a while.  You were in enough agony to take us to commercial.

Once we returned, I was ashamed when I saw the replay and saw you back on the court.  You fell to the ground, I’ll give you that.  But when you fell, Rudy, you fell the way a 4 x 8 cheap sheet of plywood falls when it’s standing on its end.  Because of the plywood’s large surface mass (in comparison to it's weight), as it falls, the air acts as a resistance to the force and cushions the silent landing.  Much like the plywood’s decent, your decent looked like a collision was looming.  But you cushioned the fall with your hands and shoulders and it was really nothing.  MB even acknowledged your overreaction.

In the second instance of this tomfoolery I felt the cold metal dagger infiltrate my nearly burnt-out Rudy-fandom’s heart.  You had a wide open lay-up following a steal; no one was in sight so you decided to coast toward the rim until you saw a streaking speed demon approaching.  You tried to speed up but it was too late.  The bandit snatched the ball from your hands as you planted your left foot for the lay-up.  As you fell, you flailed your arms, of course.

You were lazy, Rudy, a forgivable mistake!  After you fell, you got up, took one or two steps and began to limp.  You were favoring the right knee and had the Mike’s and audience concerned.  As you walked towards the bench, you stopped two or three times, bent over while putting your hands to the floor to signal your pain.  What do you suppose the replay showed?  When you fell, your right knee wasn’t even involved.  The only thing that was hurt was your ego.  Replay even showed you take two steps without a grimace, then embarrassingly bend over and grab your knee.  It was obvious you were faking, Rudy.  Completely and utterly obvious.

I know the toughness of European players has always been questioned, but I didn't know it was this bad.  I believe a player could have all the talent in the world, but if that player is not tough, he should never be considered great.  So, please leave the fake injuries and unnecessary arm flails to the Paul Pierce’s and Manu Ginobili’s of the league, Rudy.  It’s embarrassing and cowardly.  This is the United States, not Europe.  Simply put we don’t do that stuff over here.  Leave it to the futbol players, please.  It makes you look weak.  It makes the team look weak.  It makes us look like the San Antonio Spurs!  Take it like a man, Rudy.

Most likely I just refresh more often. It's playoff Sunday, which means

alternating between NFL and Sesame Street all day. I have to refresh often to keep my sanity.

Why do you like it?

What about his steal for the game winning breakaway (that the refs took away) versus GS? How about his grit and being the only man ready to play in the season opener? How about triple after triple that he drops on people’s heads or the bounce passes through people’s legs to LMA? Or his bromance with sergio on (and off) the court?
There are plenty more people to point your anger to on this team before you look to Rudy.

Primarily, I like he calls out our floppers like we call out everyone else's.

Just because he’s our flopper doesn’t make flopping OK.

if you got a no-call like he did vs GS

you would flop every time too. Flopping has gotten out of hand in the NBA but plenty of our guys do it. Przybilla comes to mind. And what’s the difference between flopping and yelling out on no-calls? Roy does that all the time.

Tough love is not the same as testosterone poisoned, arm-chair quarterbackin', whiny hand-wringin' , artificial Machismo.....

First everybody whined about Oden being a bust.

Next, we had a flurry of posts questioning the teams toughness against the Celtics.

Then another flurry of posts attacking LMA.

Now we are going to start chewing on our favorite Spaniard?

Give me a break. Rudy has shown plenty of skill, savvy and resilience. He started out the season shooting the lights out from distance, Then as teams started adjusting and playing him tighter from the arc he struggled a bit. Lately, you can see that he has been making a concerted effort to get to the rim. This is the sign of a smart player adjusting to the league and showing that he is not one dimensional.

Let Dr. Phil psychoanalyze the players, if he wants. Rudy is showing plenty of game. He is not a bruiser: dude is 6’6" and weighs #185. He is not going to play like Ron Artest.

The only explanation I can come up with for so many fans being so hung up on “toughness,” is that y’all must be a little insecure and living vicariously through our players. Chill out, the guys are young, but plenty tough.

I really like this

finally the over-hyped Rudy trends are starting to dissapear and people are becoming realistic. I am a huge fan of rudy, but I have always seen him as a role player and solid contributer off the bench. There was a phase on this site where every second post was how is the next super-star, Im so happy people are coming to their senses.

A bit harsh

Rudy is doing pretty well considering it’s his first year in the NBA and in the midst of a Euro League/Olympics/NBA trifecta that is nothing short of grueling. Yes, he can be a bit theatrical, but I certainly wouldn’t go as far as to call him soft/a faker. He’s a great fit for the 2nd unit, and I think he is very important to the Blazers when you consider Brandon has missed at least some time every year due to injury – having Rudy means Portland doesn’t have to run him into the ground the entire year.

Believe me

I am not doubting his value to this team. I don’t believe your points really relate to what I was trying to say. I was questioning Rudy’s toughness, certainly not his ability or value. I don’t believe a grueling schedule has an effect of his ability to at least attempt a take to the basket, or getting up when your knocked to the ground.

I love Rudy to death, but he and his compadres are really not the toughest in the world :)

Case in point: EuroBasket 2007 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siKWh0DkCz8

Watch for the sniper cutscenes, and how players on the national team fall to the ground as if hit by a bullet on ticky tacky fouls. Funny stuff.

I agree.

I think people have a prejudice against European players and immediately judge them all as floppers. True there are definitely some that do flop, but so do plenty of American players like say Derek Fisher or even the occasional hollywood act by Baron Davis.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTdERYOtqsg

Call it what you want: an art, a pitiful form of basketball, etc. But don’t claim that all Europeans are soft for something every player does.

The Kings have the best bench I’ve seen. There are easily 14 guys on this team good enough for every bench in the league. Now if we could only get some starters, I’d totally jizz in my pants.

For not remembering the games in which these incidents occurred you sure do have a vivid picture of the events themselves.

I don’t remember either of these plays that you are talking about, so if there is video out there I would sure like to see it so I can make my own judgment on the plays. Until I see the video myself I am pretty skeptical about this post.

BTW flopping in the NBA is not some new Euro induced phenomenon it started happening all the way back in the 70’s, there is an old school Red Auerbach video out there where he talks about flopping..

Good point

I remember getting taught the art of flopping way back in middle school and high school basketball. Don’t get me wrong, I can’t stand it. But it is definitely not a new practice. I also despise the D-Wade special where he pump fakes and awkwardly leans in to the defender while throwing up a disgusting shot. Everytime you hear a whistle on that, an angel gets set on fire.

Yes, it's just Blazersedge

but if you’re going to attempt to write an insightful post at least get the TITLE right. And what the heck is surface mass anyway? I do remember when Rudy went down and hit his elbow, he did overreact, I’ll give you that. It was a little weak.

But calling Rudy lazy? Do you ever watch him off the ball? He runs around constantly, like Rip Hamilton and you’ll never hear anyone call him lazy.

I can’t wait until Rudy starts getting the hang of the NBA style of play. He’ll start getting some of those calls. I doubt this post will be written then.

Yesh!

That’s pretty funny. I like Rudy’s schtick but he plays the fool too much to get the refs respect. On the other hand, when he starts buzzing around on defense he’s a total disrupter. It’s one of the best parts of his game.

by oregonslee on Jan 11, 2009 5:37 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

im sorry but this is more dramatic than the hills season 4 finale!

my GAWDDDDDDDDDDDD

Rudy is all basketball player and he is used to being a showman as well. I think the dramatic falling and ‘faking’ that you allude to go hand in hand w/ the flashy alley oops a la the Spanish Connection. He’s a passionate man clearly. I think he’s also becoming accustomed to the NBA game. Clearly this is a different league than Euro-ball and Rudy is slowly coming to grips with that. I’m certain all this dramatic semi-Pierce hero model falling and triumphant returning is showy but he’ll remove that act from the arsenal of bad ass ness once he has confidence that his games speaks for itself.

And seriously, of all things to complain of, how about his annoying Euro-whine that he does after every time he blatantly (usually) fouls someone. It’s even rubbing onto Batum, who when spreading his arms in defense looks like an albatross about to take flight and seriously that’s not cute.

Give the lad some time. He’s a seriously good asset to this team. He has just started driving more to the hoop. His ball handling has been improving. He’s playing better defense probably b/c he’s understanding the sets and communication w/ the team is better. Just imagine him in 2 years.

Although I wont steal him from Twiggs I do like Rudy and ask that you stop being jealous of your girlfriend’s crush on his hotness a hater :)

At least Rudy was never carried off the court after a flop

This thread gave me an idea for a cool t-shirt:
“Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful” on the front w/Rudy pic and “I <3 Rudy” on the back.

Well, I could be wrong, but I believe diversity is an old, old wooden ship that was used during the Civil War era.

What a strange thread. Both the post and comments are, umm, interesting?

I think you disproved your whole argument when you said:

please leave the fake injuries and unnecessary arm flails to the Paul Pierce’s and Manu Ginobili’s of the league

5 rings between them, 1 finals mvp, and countless all star games. If it works for them it might work for Rudy. And this one:

It makes you look weak. It makes the team look weak. It makes us look like the San Antonio Spurs!

Do I want the Blazers to look like the spurs? Yes please.

Rudy is a rook and learning the nba. He knows he needs to improve his ability to attack the rim, and he has looked better doing so lately. “Performing theatre” is part of basketball eventhough I wish it wasn’t. The fact is you can work the refs and until the nba fixes that, its just one more way to gain an advantage on your opponent….

toughness is overrated.

Honestly who cares if he fakes, is ‘tough’ or whatever. He’s obviously tough enough to play pro ball and contribute at a high level. He has faults but the good far outweigh the bad.

I know the original post was intended to be humourous but the majority of the post was so overly harsh and critical that the humour was lost on me.

For even longer, I’ve hated Shaq and his backing down & dunking no-finesse power game. Turns out, I just wanted a Shaq (GO) and a Euro flopper (Rudy) of my very own! Re/ the latter, Rudy is OUR chain-smoking pretty-boy Euro drama queen, and I wouldn’t want him any other way.

I mean he likens these events to getting stabbed in the heart!

I don't remember that many iconic Rudy plays, either errors or great plays, apart from his oops

Missing an open shot from the corner to maybe win us the first game against Utah. His technical foul against Golden State.

On the other hand, he got super-critical rebounds in the final seconds against Toronto and Detroit that won us the games.

I havent seen it in the NBA yet, but Rudy is tough, Rudy is Tee You Eff Eff. I just think that it’s something about him getting used to the NBA, Nates system, or not being the man on his team. I know Rudy is tough because if you watched the Spain games in the Olympics as I never missed one, and usually watched them multiple times a piece (Thank you DVR), you would see Rudy getting hit in the head and walking off the court with his eyes rolled to the back of his head, looking at the tweety birds buzzing around him, and then a quarter later coming in to the game and get dagger three and ally oop and no look passes FTW. like I said I haven’t seen it yet in the NBA, but I know he is tough I’ve seen it, lets wait for the Play offs or next season before we start giving his career a lable like weak.

A very inane post...

To think you really know the most minute details, outcomes and motivations involved in a couple of plays you watched on television is absurd. Unless you are out there on the court or at least in the arena, you have no idea whether he was faking anything. The fact that you make that statement shows how little you know about athletic competition of any sort.

And calling him out because he adjusts his hair? Give me a break!!

Rudy Fernandez is one of the few players I'm indifferent toward on Portland, which is odd since a lot of ...

y’all have got very strong opinions of him one way or another. As far as I’m concerned, Fernandez is an above average backup shooting guard who’s got the upside of Manu Ginobili and the downside of Sasha Vujacic. In essence, Fernandez is an altogether decent reserve swingman, which is all the Trail Blazers need him to be on this squad. Lastly, Fernandez is easily a superior defender — despite the scorn he garners for flopping on occasion — to Brandon Roy, so the snide remarks about him supposedly being soft are unwarranted here.

by AK1984 on Jan 11, 2009 10:44 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

When I see

Rudy, even one time, d-up somebody like Roy did Joe Johnson at the end of that Hawks game last year, then I’ll be willing to entertain your final assertion.

I notice Rudy screwing up on defense — leaving a shooter to unnecessarily double, getting backdoored, missing box outs, sliding under picks when he should go over or vice-versa, missing rotations — WAY more often than I see Brandon committing those errors.

That’s not to state that Rudy’s a bad defender, necessarily, but to argue that he’s “easily a superior defender…to Brandon Roy” is the kind of tomfoolery that is as risible as it is specious.

To put that final sentence into language that you’d appreciate. :)

by BlazersOrBust on Jan 12, 2009 1:11 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

You made some fair points, for Rudy Fernandez surely isn't as technically sound on defense as ...

Brandon Roy. Fernandez, however, makes up for it by successfully gambling for steals by oftentimes jumping the passing lanes. Once Fernandez learns how to play within his limits on defense — which should happen in due time — he’ll be considerably better than Roy, whose limitations athletically will always encumber him. All in all, Fernandez just needs to adapt his style of play to the domestic game by being a tad more conservative on the court.

by AK1984 on Jan 12, 2009 1:26 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

its not really that roy is athletikly limited on defence

he just dosent try as hard. when roy feals that a defencive play is important enough, hes as athletic as anyone in the game. but i do agree that he isnt allways trying hard on defence.

by maid tu rek on Jan 12, 2009 1:45 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with all of what you wrote

save that Roy’s “limitations athletically” are going to allow Rudy to become a better defensive player than him. I’m too lazy to actually back up my argument with, you know, stats (empirical support is totally overrated anyway…just ask any string theorist!) but I bet if you looked at their combine numbers, Roy’s would trash Rudy’s. Rudy is simply not more athletic than Roy.

by BlazersOrBust on Jan 12, 2009 2:55 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

All right, I've looked up both Brandon Roy and Rudy Fernandez's combine results.

Brandon Roy

6’5.25" Tall (Without Shoes)
6’6.25" Tall (With Shoes)
207 Pounds
6’8" Wingspan
8’5" Standing Reach
34" No-Step Vertical Jump
40.5" Maximum Vertical Jump
11.13 Seconds In Lane Agility
3.22 Seconds in 3/4 Court Sprint

http://www.draftexpress.com/nba-pre-draft-measurements/measurements.php?year=2006&sort2=DESC&draft=0&pos=0&sort=2

Rudy Fernandez

6’4.75" Tall (Without Shoes)
6’6" Tall (With Shoes)
172 Pounds
6’7.5" Wingspan
8’5.5" Standing Reach
26.5" No-Step Vertical Jump
35.5" Maximum Vertical Jump
10.48 Seconds In Lane Agility
3.33 Seconds in 3/4 Court Sprint

http://www.draftexpress.com/nba-pre-draft-measurements/?page=&year=2005&sort2=DESC&draft=0&pos=0&sort=

Well, you’re correct that Roy is actually more athletic than Fernandez. It’s deceptive stuff.

Yet Rudy killed him

in the lane agility test, which theoretically should help predicate how good of an on-the-ball defender somebody’s gonna be (if it measures lateral quickness like it purports to do). I wonder how strong, if any, the correlation if between elite lane agility times and how good of an individual man defender somebody is.

Can we get one of our resident Hollingers cracking on this? Lovely, thanks.
