Is This Man In Our Future?
After all the hubbub yesterday now might be a good time to return to really important matters; namely, who's available to help us make deep runs in the playoffs - starting now? It's no secret this is one wild dude but is a better player currently available than can fill so many of our immediate needs? The price is right and we are definitely pinching our pennies, as we are all well aware. Please, try not to use the word cancer if at all possible.

It's gonna be hard folks
to improve on this first reply, but let’s keep it coming.
assuming we were willing to make that trade,
do you honestly think they would be willing to? besides, we have enough rookies on our team as it is. and im seriously skeptikle of your choices in charikter, i mean sure, we may have lost a bunch of cap space, but were not broke, and when i look around, i dont see anybody with a gun to my head, so im going to have to go with a no on that one. besides, they might just want to keep them/him. they do kind of have playoff aspirations after all
REAL OBJECTION
They LIED!!!

Kenny Smith says
they may want to blow it up and make big moves. So let’s assume they are open to a trade and ask ourselves if he can help us where we have needs.
id rather have brooks and battier
but i dont know what shane gets paid. i just dont want a guy that can get kicked out of a fricking summer league game, or one who might punch me if my rich friend decides to hook me up with one of his 4rth row seats someday. they look great on papor, but i wonder whats going on in the locker room. i mean why are they thhinking of blowing up the team? i wouldnt really want to absorb their problems. if we never made another trade again for the next 3 years, we would still see the playoffs every year at least. our team is the youngest and only getting better.
but maybee battier, to play in front of martell, put batum on the bench. that kid would absorb, and when we did see him again, he would be unrekagnizable. battier might be able to help martell and he would be a "calming veterin presence while we continue to develop our SF’s. im from eugene originaly, so i just like brooks
They LIED!!!

Those are both nice players
but much more difficult to acquire. They would also be much more expensive, and I mean much more. Aaron Brooks is a keeper and Battier is their heart.
so whut exzactly duz blowing up a team mean then?
wut assets are on the table?
They LIED!!!

I think Vince Carter
is a more likely option, and less of a cancer.

Last summer, I got maligned for bringing up VInce Carter as an option.
http://www.blazersedge.com/2008/7/3/564100/kevin-pritchard-go-all-in
As it is, though, I still advocate trading Raef LaFrentz, Travis Outlaw, Martell Webster, and Jerryd Bayless for Carter, Trenton Hassell, and Maurice Ager.
In my mind, Carter gets a bad rap for allegedly being a quitter in the past; regardless, a tandem of Carter and Roy at the wings would bring some potent offensive firepower to each and every game. Anyway, with regards to the ancillary parts of that trade proposal, Hassell would be Portland’s first true lockdown one-on-one perimeter defensive stopper since Ime Udoka, while Ager — who possesses an expiring contract — would fill the scrub guard role that was held by Taurean Green and Von Wafer at different points of last season.
Carter never really seems to get hurt much
but that’s a big contract, dont you think?
less of a potentailly malignant growth
of unknown properties.

My dying brother
will equate his cancer with his beloved Blazers. You are stealing his hope.

Here is my main deal
forget crazy, forget carcinogens,
dude stops ball movement and disrupts offense. He’s also kinda a chucker.

That's a concern
he likes to touch the ball for sure. But every game is different. I watched him with Sac drop 40 points on us and he made it look easy. They hated to lose him because he was their best scorer. They hated to lose him because he was their best defender. He was also their best trade piece. But yes, he’s a chucker.
Few players in the league have their name used in a rap song - as an adjective
Can’t find it at the moment, but there is some track out with the hook “I go Ron Artest” to describe when he flips out. For good reasons :)
Ron's a gentleman
90% of the time. It’s the other 10% that worries his wives.
"I go Ron Artest"
defies all the laws of a grammatical universe.

defies many laws of many different universes.
I know you can put admiration in bags, because admiration is real, and tominhawaii says that everything that is real is measurable.
This would never happen because the team is committed to not bringing in guys with character issues
If you were playing NBA live and want to make this kind of trade then it is a good move, but it will never happen.
Artest is also an unrestricted free agent after this year so we’d basically be renting him for the rest of the season which doesn’t make much sense to me since we won’t have a real shot at a championship until next year or the year after that at the earliest.
Setting the off-court issues aside Artest is a career .422 shooter and is shooting a horrendous .378 from the field this year. His PER is 14.9 this season which is pretty bad (his career PER is only 16.0 which means he is an average basketball player statistically).
He is also past his prime at 29 and you can only expect his production to decline in the next couple years. I’ll stick with Martell/Batum combo at the SF which should give us more efficient scoring than Artest and solid defense (especially from Batum) and these players won’t be a cancer to the team and won’t cost us as much.

There's that word again
So, is any player out there with a better skill set we might acquire for a deep run into the playoffs? By the way, Kenny Smith says he’s playing good (not great) for Houston in spite of his injuries. No one knows the Rockets better than Kenny Smith. Do you really think he’s past his prime?
He's 29 his numbers are down this year
those are two indicators that he is past his prime

We would no longer be considered soft!
My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.
For A Fact
There are few players whose physical skills match their competitive fire but he is definitely one. I understand people’s concerns about character but Iwonder if it’s not overblown. Other than “the big fight” which formed our opinions of him, what exactly are his character flaws and are they insurmountable?
have you ever listened to him speak? loloolololol
listaning to him speak is like trying to read my wrighting

That trade would not happen of that you can be sure...
Houston loves Artest and Artest is enjoying Houston.

Tinkering
I no longer see the Blazers making any significant trade moves this year – unless something too good to pass up comes along. Roy and Aldridge have stepped up their games, Oden is inconsistent but that will improve, Blake’s game has also improved, Rudy is now settling in as the 3rd guard, and Outlaw is increasingly getting the backup PF minutes. Once Webster is back, we’ll then see how we fare with Webster/Batum, and with Rudy and or Outlaw sometimes getting some of the backup SF minutes. And then, we’ve even seem Pryz plugged in as the backup PF in one instance.
What we have, of course, is a “need” to deal Frye and Diogu. We simply aren’t playing them enough to renew their contracts at $3 to $4 million a year and then keep them on the bench as the third option at PF. However, we’re not going to get a lot in return, other, perhaps, than draft choices or a backup PF.
In sum, we have a solid core – and I can’t see ripping it apart as would be needed to pick up a player that might help us today, but not necessarily tomorrow.
And, I imagine at some point we’ll also try to consolidate the Blake/Sergio/Bayless situation at guard, as we’ve got three who can play, but only enough minutes for 2. But again, it’s not likely we’ll get all that much a better player on a 2 for 1 swap.
In the end, when you’re 22-14, have 4 rookies and 4 third year players in Roy, Aldridge, Webster and Sergio, we aren’t in a position of having to do very much yet.
We could likely get a better backup PF without any radical changes – but to get a front line SF or PG would take a starter, as opposed to trying to deal 2nd team players or rookies.
And since we may have our own solution at SF, assuming we have the patience to let Webster come back and see how it works with he, Batum, and even Rudy and Travis, then that may not be the position of need we sometimes think it is right now. Which would leave PG.
So, my bet is that we clear contracts and tinker – but that’s it.
