NBA Admits Referee Mistake in Celtics Game

Well not exactly. That is the headline of a story that appears on the Boston Globe web-site:

http://www.boston.com/sports/basketball/articles/2009/01/01/nba_admits_referee_mistake/

Here is what I posted on the site in response to the story:

"This is hilarious. Apparently people in Boston don't understand math or the English language.

QUOTE
NBA Admits Referee Mistake
"While the NBA's head of officials admitted that an "unfortunate incident" affected the Celtics' 91-86 loss at Portland Tuesday, the game's result will not be changed."
END QUOTE

First to the math -- How could the result of a five point loss be reversed due to a play that only cost Celtics two points?

Now to the English language -- The contents of this article contradict the headline and the very basis of the story. According to the article, the NBA did not admit any mistake. They said, "the play was administered properly by our crew."

Yes it was an "unfortunate incident" for the Celtics, and maybe the rule should be changed in the off-season, maybe not.

What a joke of an "article".

Rip City "

I felt so strongly about this that I e-mailed Marc Spears the author of the article and copied my post into the e-mail. He was nice enough to respond to my e-mail (which I respect very much) and here's what he wrote:

"I don't write the headlines. Happy new year. Celtics believe mistake ruined momentum they had going.

Sent from my BlackBerry wireless handheld."

He makes a decent point that he doesn't write the headlines, but some Bostonian did, and the thesis of the article is pretty clear even without the headline. I still maintain it is an article in search of a story.

Here is a link to the Boston Globe article about the game, written by Spears in which Doc Rivers admits that his players let that call affect them for the resto of the game:

http://www.boston.com/sports/basketball/celtics/articles/2008/12/31/blazers_rattle_celtics/

Here is what I posted in response to that article:

What is the point of all the whining about that one call? It only netted the Blazers one point, and the Celtics lost the game by five. Rivers admitted that the one call took the players out of the game, and yet they were still whining about it after the game, eventhough it didn't even affect the outcome. This is the mentally tough Championship team?

I used to root for Garnett, but now it has become clear to everyone around the league that he is a punk player. The way he tried to slap around LaMarcus Aldridge was one small example. Some players mature and mellow after winning a Ring, Garnett has done the opposite, and that doesn't say much about his character.

Do Boston fans realize that Garnett's antics are quickly making him the biggest joke around the NBA? He acts like a tough guy when everybody knows he's probably never been in a real fight in his life. He was reportedly staring down Blazer players as they walked through the tunnel at the end of the game - what a joke. He knows he's protected by the rules of the NBA and by the law. I'd love to see him in a parking lot in the middle of nowhere with either Joel Pryzbilla or Greg Oden.

As a Blazer fan, I look forward to the next few years when the Blazers have Pryzbilla (The Vanilla Gorilla) and big Greg to keep Garnett's mouth shut.

Boston fans can cry all they want

This play happened in the first half. THE FIRST HALF!!!!!!! Every Blazer who played in that game had at least two fouls. The Celtics shot 31 freethrows, and they still complain. They lost cause they got out rebounded and our bench killed them. Do not fell sorry for whiny Celtics fans.

by Sabonis4Ever on Jan 1, 2009 4:42 PM PST reply actions   1 recs

they had a reason to complain

that one point swing or maybe a portland miss might have changed the outcome, but in the end the refs were bad on both sides of the ball. they got as many calls as we did. in the ends its part of the game. at least it happened early enough in the game that they could have recovered, unlike what happened to us not long ago.

these are my thoughts too...

I actually think Pierce’s travel with less than a minute left was worse than having 6 players on the floor.

It’s completely situational. A bad call like this in the 1st half has less affect on the overall outcome.

by hotstuffdb22 on Jan 1, 2009 6:15 PM PST up reply actions

Did Greg deserve a tech on that play with Ray Allen? 1 point

Did the Celtics deserve a flagrant on the Outlaw foul being that the play was on Outlaw’s body and not on the ball? 2 pts.

Did Pierce travel with the ball before being fouled? 2 pts.

My point? You get the point. Those COULD all change the outcome. To cry over a one point call in the first half is unprofessional. I remember when Lebron was clearly found during an end of game situation by Bruce Bowen with no foul called. In the friggin’ FINALS. When questioned by reporters after the game his reply was, “we are a no excuses team”. I admire that . The defending champion Cetlics are crying about a play in the first half that cost them a point. P thetic. Kind of like the kid who throws the board game when he is losing.

I'm a little confused by your tactics

C's fans act as if

this is somehow equivalent to the Ed Hotchuli call that directly decided the Broncos-Chargers game early in the NFL season. Difference is that the should-have-been-a-fumble (ruled an incompletion) happened right before the winning TD pass at the end of the game. (Hotchuli got off the hook big time when the Chargers came back to take the division in the end.) The 6-man screwup happened, as it had has been noted many times, in the SECOND QUARTER. Not only was it the C’s prerogative to be knocked off their games (if that in fact really happened) by the call, many other could-have-gone-either-way or bad non-calls, favoring both teams, happened in the second half, including Pierce’s blatant, uncalled travel on the late 3-point play (a fact that honest Boston fans have acknowledged).

Refs make decisions throughout an entire game that result in points unduly being given or taken away. This particular decision was merely very noticeable.

Actually,, if you read the Celtics blog post for the next day after the game, cooler heads

have prevailed.

Their whining on game day was mild compared to the whining here after the Dallas loss.

They usually do

there are always whiners at any blog, and for the most part, blazers fans complaining about the boston reaction are cherry picking comments from the biggest homers over there. It’d be like assuming every blazers fan agrees unconditionally with everything Wheels says and thinks he’s being completely objective.

Are there whiners there, yeah, but like you said, you could easily do the same thing looking at any of our game day threads, or one of the 8 million fan posts after the GS game.

by Royster on Jan 1, 2009 9:41 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, there are some obnoxious posters here who complain way too much about the officials.

Whenever someone wants to go all half-cocked by babbling about how the Trail Blazers supposedly get screwed over by allegedly poor and/or biased officiating, I suggest that they watch Super Bowl XL in its entirety. If that doesn’t put things in perspective for them, then they’re totally out of their gourds.

the idea

that a 1 point swing affected the outcome comes from the fact that they were forced to foul in the final minute as they were down one instead of tied.

I agree that a mentally tough team should get over this. Note to whoever plays the Celts in the playoffs, run a 6 man play and you will shatter the Cletic’s confidence. Also, there were blown calls that gave the Celtics more than 1 point.

What a bunch of whiners.

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Jan 1, 2009 5:37 PM PST reply actions

another way to shake their confidence...

it’s a lot simpler just to slap KG in the head.

by Badalona Baddie on Jan 1, 2009 5:44 PM PST up reply actions

Blazer D takes out KG!

I love watching KG give up the ball. He repeatedly passes out rather than try to score once our bigs get up on him. Watch the game, and you see he scores a bunch early from the outside with no one on him (poor defensive rotation which Nate fixes in a TO), scored on a breakaway, basically only when a big wasn’t within arms reach. KG refuses to put up a shot with any of our bigs guarding him!

If KG was really tough. he would have driven the lane ala Paul Pierce (travel or not), taken the contact and tried to score and/or go to the line and win the game.

Not only did the Blazers punk the Celtics, we punked KG up close and personal. Thank you LaMarcus, Greg and Thrilla! The legitimate threat of a block made KG tuck tail and run.

LMA, Greg and Pryzbilla went right into the mouth of Boston’s D. The Blazer bigs ruled the paint. Kudos to Blake for drawing out the defense, collapsing it with drives, and feeding the post.

Who won the championship for the Celtics?

Not KG, it was Pierce and Allen.

who won the champs for the L*kers?

Not K*be, it was Shaq himself.

Bottom Line

Boston could have just as easily walked over to a ref before the play started and pointed out there were six men on the court and the play would have never happened. The refs missed it but so did the coaching staff and all of the Celtics’ players until the play was over.

I would be ticked off if it happened the other way but would have to admit some blame on the Blazers for not noticing it themselves. Would Boston have been happy if the refs had taken away two points from them if the roles were reversed? If the play had happened with 30 seconds left in the game I would have a bit more sympathy for them but really…do I care that they let it bother them the entire second half? That is on them.

First Half Play

If I am not mistaken this incident took place in the first half. Boston led by five at that point. To make a statement this affected a championship team is a bit disingenuous on the part of Doc Rivers. It would then hold true every miss call by a referee should have the same result. Ridiculous!

Boston had every opportunity to win this game but didn’t have it in them. They should take their lumps and move on.

bad calls resulting in 2 point swings happen ALL THE TIME

This one was strange, true, but it was still just a two point swing AT MOST. If they had caught the 6 men immediately, Allen would have shot the Tech and then the Blazers would have had the ball— WITH THE CHANCE TO GET THE TWO POINTS ANYWAY.

hmmm

“Tuesday, the game’s result will not be changed.”

Does this imply that the Celts protested in hopes of the league changeing the final score or to replay the 7 seconds?

I think they should replay the possession and try to use 6 men again. Either that or use the opportunity to cheapshot Gumby.

They are the champs

or is that chumps? How could one, fairly insignificant call, which was correct but odd, affect them for the whole game? They have to be more mentally strong than that, right?

it was no big deal

just one point

the refs make all kinds of mistakes. that’s the way it’s always been. oden got called for traveling when i dont think he did (and he was near the basket, might have scored), the foul on outlaw wasnt called a flagrant (couldve been, giving us another possession), all kinds of stuff.

i dont think we here should dwell on the officiating either, in other instances. it’s always bad. this particular call didnt come at a crucial point, didnt foul out anyone important, and only resulted in a single point to the blazers.

It was not a bad call but bad defense.

The Celtics didn´t see there were six players into the court, obviously one of them not defended. Their bad.

Tominhawaii, I actually thought the article was the funny thing

That’s what I focused the post on. I definitely don’t blame people for focusing their comments on the call itself and the whining of the Celtics players and fans.

But to me it was just funny that the Boston Globe would run an article with the headline NBA Admits Referee Mistake, and when you read the article you realize that the NBA did not admit any mistake whatsoever. The NBA said, “the play was administered properly by our crew.”

I also thought the line in the article that stated, “the game’s result will not be changed” was truly hilarious. Breaking News – the NBA is not going to overturn the outcome of a game after the fact in which one team felt they received a bad call which cost them two points. In other news, the Celtics lost that game by five points.
