Coach Buck?
http://www.portlandtribune.com/sports/story.php?story_id=122047302826178600
I think they should bring him in to assist Lucas on a short term non-guarenteed contract. If we don't like him we can always package him with Dean Demopolus and the spirit of 77' to upgrade our offensive coaching by getting Terry Porter. I've got it all worked out on ESPN trade machine I just can't get the link to work.
But seriously why not give Buck a shot? What do you folks think?

If he can get Oden or Aldridge to wear the goggles, then I say he is in.
Seriously though, I like Buck Williams, but I don’t necessarily see a need for him on the staff. Does anyone know what he has done for the last decade? If he has any resume as a coach, then I would be open to him, but if he doesn’t or worse… he just needs to supplement his retirement to maintain his style of living, then I want no part of it.

read the article
He was president of the players union, which is a pretty good qualification. I’d love to see Buck on the bench.

Quick question:
When teams win championships, who all gets a ring? How much of the coaching staff gets a ring? Pritchard wouldn’t get one…. would he? Would Paul Allen?

Quick Question
what does this have to do with the topic of this thread? Just sayin’
BTW, I don’t have the slightest idea what the answer is to your question.

everyone?
I think everyone connected with the team gets a ring… including KP, Allen, and all the coaches. Wasn’t that how those NBA rings ended up on Ebay? Through some management person who wasn’t too invested in the championship?

When a guy
Like John Sally shows you his modest collection of rings that he just happens to have in the pocket of his sports coat you know that he didnt buy them on Ebay

I'm thinking almost everyone...
I say this because shortly after the Celtics won the championship this year Wheels had there radio play-by-play guy on. In that interview he, and Wheels, said he was getting a ring, and it didn’t sound like they were joking either. If the he gets a ring I’m sure all the coaches and execs get one.
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure.

If PTB management has a position he is qualified for...
then I would LOVE to see Buck Williams be part of this organization again. You just can’t have too many class acts, it is not possible, and Buck Williams is a class act.

Terry Porter's comment said a lot
I mean if Buck is rejected as a potential assistant coach by his friend and former teammate, what does that say about his current qualifications? Of course we all know that qualifications don’t mean everything……..look at Dick Cheney!!

Did Porter have the final call on who his assistants would be?
by tingeyga on Sep 7, 2008 11:54 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
don't think so
I remember reading something where he and Kerr were hiring them together, but reading between the lines, it seemed clearly like he Terry didn’t have final call.

This has been Buck's desire for a long time
He was an assistant in the Warriors’ Summer League program a couple years ago.

The Buck stops here
Odenied: Asked whether he noticed Oden favoring his right knee, Frye dismissed it entirely. "He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors."

Pippen
I would love to see him strolling the sidelines of this young Blazers team.

Like a cubist Picassio to be a good coach and Buck can whup him easy

how about MJ....
he’s a competitor…probably tired of losing in Charlotte. I’m sure its eating him up in inside…..
how awsome would it be to see MJ stroll the sidelines of a blazer dynasty….There’s no doubt he’ll carry respect. And i think he could help Roy’s game

I don't think so...
I think I would slowly die inside if the greatest player ever who won 6 championships as a SG and denied us 1 of our own could have been taken by us in the draft, and then 25+ years later is strolling up and down our sideline as the coach of a championship winning blazer team, knowing that he was reason we lost in 1992. And besides, he was gifted to play the game, not ANYTHING else. He sucks as a coach and he sucks as a GM. Look at Charlotte!!

Agreed, with a but
If you look at the how most of the great players fared as coaches/GMs, it isn’t a pretty picture. Jordan’s record as an exec isn’t good. Bird was a solid coach, but hasn’t found that special touch building a team, Isaiah was neither a good coach or exec. Heck even Magic Johnson had a short but unspectacular coaching career.
However some of their contempories have had success as coaches/execs (Dumars, Ainge, Rivers, Johnson, Skiles, Scott, McMillian). The difference between the two groups is that those who have been successful in their coaching paid their dues as assistants and learned how to coach. Those who were just tossed into a role haven’t.
If Jordan (or any player) is as serious about being a good coach as they were about being good players, then I would welcome them as assistants. If they aren’t (and Jordan hasn’t shown that he is), then I would take a pass.
