Knicks suggest dealing Randolph to Memphis

From ESPN:

The Knicks have a trade proposal on the table with the Memphis Grizzlies that would see Darko Milicic and Marko Jaric dealt to New York in exchange for Zach Randolph.

An executive with knowledge of the trade talks said Friday that Knicks president Donnie Walsh initiated the Randolph-to-Memphis talks with the Grizzlies recently and it's up to Walsh to sign off on the deal. But it appears Walsh has cooled to the idea of trading his player, the executive said.

A Knicks spokesman declined comment Friday.

Milicic is reportedly owed $14.5 million over the next two seasons, while Jaric will make $21.3 million over the next three seasons. The Knicks want to trade Randoph because his contract runs through 2010-11. He will be paid nearly $48 million over those three seasons.

The move helps the Knicks with their salary cap. It has been widely perceived that their goal is get under the cap before the summer of 2010 so they can make a run at LeBron James and other high-profile free agents who will hit the market that offseason.

Asked whether he noticed Oden favoring his right knee, Frye dismissed it entirely.

Hope it goes through for Zach, it can only get better than in NY.

Z-Bo and Love on the same team?

They need to get Maglore for the C spot and have the slowest lubering team. Mike Conley (sp?), and his speed will be wasted with them.

My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

Zach started out getting his 20 and 10

WITHOUT plays being run for him. He did it with weakside rebounding and put-backs, and some decent ability to take his man off the drive from the upper block.

He was clearly valuable. Then the Evil One, Mr. “What’s Chemistry?”, gave ZBo that huge contract and all of a sudden ZBo is like, “I am the man. Feed me the ball. Hustle? I don’t think franchise players hustle.”

Evidently, ‘franchize playas’ don’t pass out of the low post, either.

Zach and his agent also argued

that Pau and AK-47 got max deals, so Zach deserved one, too. As we’ve seen since, not one of those guys deserved a max deal — though they’re hardly the only NBA players who can make that claim. And you can’t blame them for taking advantage of weak-minded GMs and owners.

I shoot layups like they're jumpers.

What I want to know is...

… how can we get in on this and get Rudy Gay out of the deal. Somehow, I think getting him and seeing Randolph in Memphis would complete some circle of karma.

That might turn out as one of the shortest trade talks KP ever initiated.

Hold on a second

Why would the Grizzles trade away Pau Gasol and then trade for Zach Randolph? Sellers remorse? Are they trying to be a worse front office than the Bobcats, Hawks and Knicks? Am I missing something here? At least you can bury those Memphis guys on the bench while you wait for the contracts to expire. There’s no way you don’t play a 20 10 guy even if he’s a this generation’s McHale (you know, for his ball hoggery). Plus Darko and Marko make a great addition (name-wise) to the Grizzly cheer squad.

And for any NBA conspiracy theorists out there……The Grizzles traded away an All star to LA and take a cancer and bloated contract off the hands of NYC. Big markets….David Stern…..TV ratings…..anyone?……….. anyone?

The street lights is on.

Marc may be better than Pau

in a couple of years.

That may have been a highly successful trade for the future for Memphis. I personally would rather see Pau than Marc on the L@kers when our dynasty time starts.

by jscot on Sep 5, 2008 11:21 PM PDT up reply actions

I can imagine him being a stronger post defender

He doesn’t seem to have Pau’s versatility to play two positions, his foot-speed, his good jump-hook, his excellent passing skills. He seems to have inherited his soft touch around the basket and has a decent jumper that extends to the perimeter, but right now he is mostly a bulky guy to man the middle.

Marc Gasol + Zach Randolph > Pau Gasol? Yeah, probably, but it didn’t seem like taking on more money was the original plan.

Odenied: Asked whether he noticed Oden favoring his right knee, Frye dismissed it entirely. "He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors."

by Norsktroll on Sep 6, 2008 1:20 AM PDT up reply actions

Marc is younger

has more years ahead of him.

Also, I think, tougher.

Also, I suspect, will be a significant low-post threat within a couple years. He may never be the passer Pau is, although that can be learned.

Foot speed is nice, but not necessary in the low post.

Marc isn’t as good now. But if Marc were on the L@kers instead of Pau, it might well extend their window to contend a little further into our window.

Timing.

Either way, it’s mid-teen-millions in bad contracts.
Who would YOU rather be paying about $15mil per year – Z-Bo, or the Marko-Darko pair?

Heck, even after what we’ve been through with him, I’d say Zach.
Especially if the team in question isn’t one battling a past history of bad character dudes,
like we were when we got rid of him, or the Truck Party Knicks now, or the Pacers.
If the team is the Griz, those bad marks against him aren’t as bad as they were here.

And he’s probably worth more ON the court than the MarkoDarko pair.

That said, clearing bad contracts by 2010 is a big deal for teams in the hunt for LeBron (like NY),
but not such a big deal for teams that never would’ve had a sniff at King James (like Memphis).

This trade actually makes sense.
Both Zach and the Marko-Darko-combo (that sounds VERY Swedish Chef, doesn’t it?)
are $15mil worth of very bad player(s), so it’s still bad-for-bad.
But overall, it’s like the Raef-for-Ratliff trade, if the Bassy-for-Roy part weren’t involved.

randolph doesn't know how lucky he is

Does anyone remember the game last year when randolph stopped defending his guy to argue with the refs about a call that happened on the other end. He was just standing there not even looking at the game and his man jacked up a 3. No team will be a contender with randolph on the floor. He is an idiot and a thug, who cares more about his image than the game. I met him at a bar once, downtown right after his rookie season, and bought him a drink for doing such a good job his first year. He just took it and walked away, no thank you, no head nod, nothing. That was when I knew he was a punk.

by Tyler Durrden on Sep 6, 2008 12:54 PM PDT reply actions

Sorry I forgot my point

Randolph is lucky because people still have faith that he will end up being a good player. He should never be an all star, his overall game is weak, poor defender, slow, predictable, the only things he’s got are good hands, and a soft touch. HE CAN BARELY DUNK!!!! The knicks would be lucky to get rid of him, they can only have one Marbury on the team. GO BLAZERS!!!!

by Tyler Durrden on Sep 6, 2008 12:58 PM PDT reply actions

Marc Gasol needs to go jogging

I can’t see what all the hype is about pertaining to the Gasol’s. They are above average players, but I’ve never gotten the feeling that they dominate the paint. Pau was lucky to be on Kobe’s team last year, but before that how many mediocre seasons did he have in memphis? Sure he was the best player, but I would be two playing with a bunch of junior high kids. Marc Gasol looked really out of shape in the olympics, and slower than Pau. Yeah he is bigger, but looking like you’re struggling under the rules you’re used to playing didn’t show me anything special. Rudy and Rubio were the only guys who really looked special to me.
