Excitement and Interest
After an extra-long weekend at work I'm all but asleep on my feet so I don't have the drive to start the Southeast Division preview today. However here's a pretty good question to encapsulate the summer months so you guys can carry the ball today.
What Blazer player are you most excited to watch this season...or if not excited what player are you most interested to see?
Have at it below. Enjoy!

Has to be Oden by far.
Watching him block shots, really gets me pumped up. Plus seeing him put away those monster jams in traffic. Opponents looking on helplessly when he gets another put back after an offensive board. He’s so big, and so strong, even as a rookie he’s gonna impress. Wait til he really gets going…

No question about it
Greg Oden. Rudy will be exciting; Bayless will be interesting; and the Webster/Outlaw battle will have some drama. But Oden has the chance to be that once-in-a-generation player, and I am so excited to watch that start to happen.

I was just thinking about fanfest this friday
and how for as much as I talk about Greg, I’ve never actually seen him play in person. def looking forward to getting a first look at rudy and bayless as well, but I’d show up to a gym just to watch GO lift weights. is it sad that my hero is 8 years younger than me?

Im going to think outside the obvious
Because we are all exited to see Oden, and Rudy. I think I’ve talked about them more than anything in any other sport in the last two weeks.
Martel is who I want to see, I think this is Webs year to break out. He has the body, he has the work ethic and it’s his first opportunity of being a true Vet. He can come in under the radar with all the excitement being on Rudy, Oden, Outlaw and Bayless.
I know you have the ability to play hard nose D, grab the boards, slash and shoot the three. Let’s see it Martel!
The pictures kinda small, but Im giving the C's a big thumbs down

There’s gonna be another break out player this year. Someone who catches our attention and surprises all of us, and I think Martell really could be that player.

I’m pumped to see greg, but I think I know what to expect from him. Martell on the other hand, is having things like “body, work ethick, automatic, said about him, he’s always being talked about when starting line up comes up, even though we got a rudy now, I think I’m more interested in "did it pay off” than I am anything else.

The lost "big three"
It’s funny how little hype has surrounded LaMarcus’ impending season, which is understandable considering all of the prodigious talents of the newcomers joining the team, but for some reason I think this team is going to succeed as much or more because of LMA’s ability to score and provide leadership as anyone else on this team (possibly with the exception of Brandon).

Roy too
I think Brandon’s been taken for granted a bit too. Fans are obviously geeked about Greg Oden and there’s a nice subculture of Rudy-mania growing. People around here who follow the team closely are expecting big things from LaMarcus this year, but nobody really talks about our best player that much. It’s just assumed that Brandon will be good old reliable Brandon. People even talk about him being a good sport and sacrificing some of his minutes so Rudy and Bayless can get more time to show what they can do. I think people are sleeping on B-Roy. This could be the year that he goes from All-Star candidate to MVP candidate.

MVP candidate? Not a chance.
The team would have to win 60 games and he would have to be averaging 30ppg for his name even to come up in the MVP discussion. Even then, folks would argue that Oden and Roy’s other teammates deserve a lot of the credit.

People tend to look
for reasons not to vote people beyond the obvious group. With Roy it’s always going to be, “But he has Greg Oden on his team…who WOULDN’T win with that guy?” If the Blazers lost and Roy scored 26, on the other hand, it would be, “But he’s just a one-man show getting stats on a bad team.”
The only guy who has a ghost of a chance of getting league MVP on this team will be Greg himself, just because he’s huge both in size and national attention.

We shall see
I think you’re being mesmerized by potential and failing to appreciate performance. Brandon Roy has gone from Rookie of the Year his first year to an All-Star appearance in his second year. If you look at the trajectory of that graph and conclude that Brandon is disqualified from MVP consideration for his entire career, I think you’re selling him short. And I think he will prove you wrong.

Nothing in my statement
said anything about Brandon’s quality of play, his performance, or his ability…let alone potential versus production. Rather it’s how his quality of play will be perceived by a national media obsessed with flash and/or huge stats. It probably won’t be in the best interests of the Blazers for Brandon to take 25 shots and score 26 points per game. There’s an argument every single year about what “MVP” means. Best player in the league? Most valuable to his team? Everybody in the first part of that split will look at Brandon’s stats and head on to someone else. That lessens the chance that he’ll receive the award.

What I was referring to:
“The only guy who has a ghost of a chance of getting league MVP on this team will be Greg himself, just because he’s huge both in size and national attention.”
Greg Oden is 100% potential right now. His NBA performance is made up of a handful of summer league games. To suggest that he’s the only player on the Blazers who could be considered for the league MVP is, while totally understandable and reasonable, nonetheless a little presumptuous.
You say:
“It probably won’t be in the best interests of the Blazers for Brandon to take 25 shots and score 26 points per game.”
Probably. But maybe not. A statement like that suggests that Brandon’s game is already defined and has parameters. You’re saying he can score 20 points per game but not 26. He has a ceiling. Maybe he does. But until his performance starts plateauing and I see him have a year where he scores fewer points per game than the previous year, I don’t think it’s ludicrous to think that he could be as good or better than any and every other player in the league.
The conditions under which Brandon Roy would be practically guaranteed the MVP trophy would be if the Blazers have the best record in the league and Brandon has the best overall statistics on the team. All I’m saying is, that could totally happen.

All your arguments
are predicated on the talents of the players involved. The only thing I would quibble with you about there is on Brandon’s preferred style of play. Unless Oden, Aldridge, Travis, Bayless, and Rudy leave en masse or are injured in a freak five-way car accident together Brandon will not be taking 25 shots or scoring 26 points per game for an entire season. That is not his style, any more than it’s Kobe’s style to be the set-up man in the fourth quarter. Clyde Drexler, who was far more of a scoring-oriented guard than Roy, averaged almost 20 attempts and 25 points for a couple seasons before the Blazers got really good. Eventually he scaled back because his teammates were good enough to merit the ball being shared and that’s why Portland was devastating. Roy already has the knack for sharing the ball and he’ll also have incredible teammates in a couple years. He could take all the shots and score a ton maybe, but that won’t be necessary or productive.
In any case the talents of the players involved isn’t the only factor in deciding the league MVP. The PERCEPTION of the talents, games, and “big splash factor” of the players among national media-types matters greatly. MVP is different than Rookie of the Year, where there are only maybe 2-3 viable candidates. The national media perception will tend to drift past Roy even if he technically has the best stats on the best team in the league. In that eventuality people will look at Greg Oden and say, “Without him they’re not the best team.” They will say, “How can Brandon be league MVP when he is not even the most dominant player on his own team?” Is that fair? Probably not. Is that accurate? Probably not. Obviously it will take both Brandon and Greg at the top of their game to manage that feat. But that is the way the media works. Not all of them will use that reasoning, but enough to handicap Roy in a league-wide vote. If they’re going to pick a Blazer to vote for MVP in that situation, it’s far more likely to be the 7-foot former #1 pick whose dunks are on Sportscenter on a nightly basis. (And if you want to say that Oden might not pan out then you have to take back the “best team in the league” designation because if he’s not darn good we won’t be.)
If you understand what I’m saying, you’re not reading anything anti-Roy, slighting Roy, or doubting Roy. If anything I’m impugning the media types who can’t get their behinds out of their butts long enough to consider people outside of the LeBrons, Kobes, ultra-scorers, and Sportscenter darlings of the world as “most valuable”. But that’s the way it is. Because of the media perception and because he’ll be fitting in with his teammates instead of drawing attention to himself he’ll not likely top the ballot for League MVP even though he may well be the Blazers’ MVP among those who know.

Precedent
Steve Nash in 04-05 scored 15.5 ppg and had a nasty dunking dominant center on his team (Amare Stoudamire pre-microfracture) who scored 26ppg and had 8.9 rpg. Nash shot the ball an average of 11.4 times per game.

Nash was flashy
Brandon quietly gets the job done.
Everyone knew that Nash was The Man on that team. The media clowns will think that Greg is The Man on ours, even if he isn’t. That’s just the way it is. The only way it will change is if Brandon averages 20/8/8 and gets about 25 triple doubles. Then, maybe, but only if Greg doesn’t become as good as he’s likely to be.

MVP Seasons
Steve Nash
05-06:
18.8ppg 10.5apg 4.2rpg
Suns Record: 54-28
Brandon Roy last season
19.1ppg 5.8apg 4.7rpg
Blazers Record: 41-41
From where I sit, if the Blazers can top 50 wins and Brandon can keep up his steady improvement, he gets on the list of MVP candidates.

There's no way Brandon could win MVP this year, but
that’s not to say he couldn’t win it down the road. The MVP is often awarded as much for what a player has done in previous seasons as for the current season. If Brandon continues to put-up solid numbers, hit a few clutch game-winners, dunk once in a while just to show he can, and the team becomes the title contender we expect they will, that plus his well-known basketball IQ, humility, and leadership skills could propel him to the MVP in five years or so.

as far as excitement goes
I’m going to be at the home opener and I have to say I am most looking forward to seeing Oden and Rudy. I want to see Oden play 30 minutes and pull down 12 boards.
As for Rudy, I just want to see his flair. Maybe watch him sink a couple of those quick-trigger threes as though they’re layups.
Gosh I could go on. Bayless is going to be always go go go, and if he can hold his own against the big guards in the NBA then he might well turn out to be the most exciting of all. I honestly would not be surprised to see him putting up 20 plus every night starting in January.
But what do I know? This is all just blah blah blah just like everyone else blah blah blah but oh well it must be worth something.

besides the obvious
I would say excited to see Oden finally get on the NBA hardwoods. And as far as interested in, I would say Bayless. Rudy I expect to do great things, but Oden and Bayless are it in the excited and interested department. I really think that Bayless will light it up on our team. Not that Blake is going to rollover, but they have two very different games. Blake steady and sure. Bayless’ athletic youthfulness mixed with stubborn pride, a powder peg of PG whoopazz, and Oden banging on the league’s bigs are going to make for a real treat this year.

as ridiculous as this may sound...
I’m kinda stoked to see Rudy and Sergio runnin’ and gunnin’ together, even if only for brief intervals. With the 10 or 11 players ahead of him on the depth chart, not many are giving Sergio a chance to earn more than a handful of garbage minutes per game. As a basketball player, it always helps to have teammates who’ve known you since birth. I think Sergio let the pressure of trying to be perfect for Nate get to him last year. His comfort level will likely raise and his level of play could be heightened by Rudy’s mere presence. Furthermore, aside from Brandon Roy who has the innate ability to do so for anyone, Sergio can set up Rudy in his preferred scoring positions and their on-court relationship could be refreshingly symbiotic.
Sergio still has an opportunity to grant himself an important niche role on this team. I don’t think it’s outrageous to say that Sergio is our best PG at running the break—something we likely intend to do—we certainly have the athletic ability and youth to do so. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Mac slowly loosen his grip on the reigns as this team continues to improve and play quality basketball. If he does, Sergio is as poised as anyone to make an impact when we pick up the pace.
I’m not saying Spanish Carib should supplant JBiz on The White Unit, but perhaps this year we’ll incorporate a “special ops” third unit, called, “The Blur Unit”—comprised of our best streakers: Sergio, JBiz/Rudy, Rudy/Martell, Travis, and Channing holding down the Center postition. I haven’t seen anyone mention this line-up before but talk about offensive pressure! Defense would be lacking, and this line-up would be investing a ton of hope in Frye’s and Travis’s rebounding abilities, but given the right scenario (if we’re up by a lot or down by a lot) this could be an interesting look for us. Heck, Travis said he wanted to average 8 rebounds as well this year, so maybe he’s up to the task. It’s hard to imagine our big 3 being out of the game for extended minutes, but given the right scenario (up by a lot or down by a lot) we might as well rest them. If we want to make the playoffs and compete this year or any hereafter, it’ll be important to have a healthy and energized big 3 at the end of these long seasons. Given the recent surgeries and moderate injuries incurred by many of our marquee, young players, it might not be such a bad idea to develop this third unit, “The Blur Unit.” Yadadig?

Sergio is a very good player that probably took the wrong way in very difficult crossroads.
He was MVP of the European Junior celebrated in Saragossa in 2004 (with 19 points and more than 8 assistances per game) and was named best revelation of the ACB in the season 2004/05 and he´s a member of the Spanish national team from 19 years old (until the last Olympics). When he had the possibility to go to the NBA he could choose:
1.- To go immediately: his rookie contract would be finished with 22 years old but his development could find many difficulties.
2.- To wait until he´s established in Europe and developed as player: his rookie contract would see his 26 or 27, losing a lot of money.

perhaps
but he still has this one last year to prove us all wrong. It’s hard to see us signing him to a fresh contract after this season no matter how much run he gets or doesn’t get. But if he plays his heart out and has some stellar moments out there, he could be earning himself a Charlie Bell-esque contract with someone else next year. like i said, if we’re running, throw Sergio in there, we may all be pleasantly surprised. And if his jumper and defense make marked improvement, he’ll show us all that he’s still capable of improving as a player and doesn’t back down from the adversity this Blazers’ roster and these last Olympics has caused him. A player in a dire situation that improves may just be worth a new contract after all. We won’t know until around February is my guess. The jury isn’t out but is isn’t exactly hung either.

Special Ops Blur Unit - I like that :)
Maybe put in LMA instead of Channing to have at least a bit more strength in the post. I wouldn’t expect something like this against really tough opponents, but that could be a great group to widen a double-digit lead against weaker ones in the third quarter, then take the fourth off and play it slow and solid again cruising to victory. Sergio, Jerryd, Rudy, Travis is as run-and-gun as it gets in Portland.

But also Bayless. I keep telling myself that if he can convert into a shooting point guard who can average 6-7 assists, we’ll be in extremely good shape.

For some reason I really want Widmer to buy the naming rights to the Rose Garden.
~~The team continues to pursue sponsors for naming rights to the Rose Garden, a plan it announced last year. And although a shaky economy has tempered potential suitors, Mensah said the team expects to find a sponsor sometime this season so that the building will be renamed for 2009-10.
For this season, the team has partnered with Widmer Brewery to add a new concourse bar at the Rose Garden, providing fans with another place to gather before and after games.~~

Steve Blake
Obviously all the usual suspects are mega-exciting and we all know this, but I’m extremely excited to see how some of our taken-for-granted guys do this year: Steve Blake, Martell Webster, Joel Przybilla, Channing Frye. I think one of those guys will take a real step up in his game. I think Steve with all the new weapons he’ll have and the way this team runs will be in a very good position to get a ton of assists and hit a bunch of open 3s and free throws. Oden and Rudy will be the type of teammates that make Steve’s job that much easier and all of a sudden people will start talking about what a great point guard he is. OR maybe the haters are right and Jarryd Bayless will be starting by Christmas. It’s going to be interesting and exciting to watch either way.

cliche, cliche
It’s the popular answer but very true for me. I’m downright giddy to watch what Oden can do to Bynum on opening night and I think that game will set the tone for the entire season. Everything I saw in college, and everything I’ve heard about his rehab, power, and agility since coming to the team has me longing to watch him dominate this league. I hope he does win ROY as he has plans of doing. This will be a very fun year indeed!!
Every child must be encouraged to get as much education as he has the ability to take. We want this not only for his sake-but for the nation's sake. Nothing matters more to the future of our country: not military preparations-for armed might is worthless if we lack the brain power to build a world of peace; not our productive economy-for we cannot sustain growth without trained manpower; not our democratic system of government-for freedom is fragile if citizens are ignorant.

Channing
Always like to see how the role players go, they decide so much over the course of the season. Channing has the potential to play a lot of years here and be an important piece of the rotation.

Oden Oden Oden
I have to be honest – everything else pales in comparison when it comes to “excitement”.
As far as intellectual/team development interest; I guess I really want to see if the second unit can come together and make us have a non-stop attack that destroys other teams morale and physical condition.
