Around SBN: NFL Owners Vote to Change Trade Deadline

The Last Time

Considering the beginning of the season I find myself getting pretty jacked up.  There are so many things to look forward to:  Oden, the continued excellence of Roy and Aldridge, the rookies fitting in and hopefully making a difference, a real bench for once, having a chance to win on most nights.  It's enough to make a Blazer diehard giddy.  In fact that first moment Oden suits up alone will be well worth the price of my dish subscription.

I was trying to think back on the last time I was this geeked about something Blazer-related.  I suppose it was Game 7 of the '99-'00 Western Conference Finals.  We all know how that turned out, so we won't mention more.  The last time I was this stoked for the start of an NBA campaign was the beginning of that same season.  We had just gotten Steve Smith and Scottie Pippen.  We had just gotten rid of Isaiah Rider.  You knew something special was in the air.  I don't expect that kind of production this season, of course, but this still feels like the beginning of something, which is what has me excited.

How much are you looking forward to the start of the season and (if it's a lot) when was the last time you felt this way?

When we traded for Buck

You just knew he was a HUGE piece. The team had really played hard for Rick in the final few games, and an enforcing rebounder was just what we needed.

Going up big on the Lakers in ’00 was close, but short-lived.

feels like the very first time

gosh honey I don’t know if I’ve EVER felt this way before.

sparkling with talent. We’ll see how they mesh and how much scoring power we really have. But it sure looks like one heckuva team and a very entertaining team too.

We cannot put up with this flagrant lack of accountability anymore.

The last time I was this excited about the Blazers' season was

well…quite frankly….last year.

Last year having BRoy, Trout, LMA, Blake, Pryz, getting James Jones, all those guys….Channing, Sergio…whoever else I’m forgetting…man. It was fun.

But yeah, before that it would have to be Steve Smith, Scottie Pip, Sabby, and ’Sheed.

Before that, it’d have to be the Glide in the 92

It's never felt this way before.

I started following the Blazers shortly after moving to Portland in late 1993,
and while I had many chances to get excited along the way,
it’s just so different just from the context of having followed the last decade and a half.

If there had been a level of promise like this anytime before now, it STILL would feel different,
just for having been through fourthquartergameseven, nanny rape, Sean Elliott, towel throw,
losing the lottery, winning the lottery, microfracture, Sheed replaced by Zach,
JR Rider’s replacements replaced by Bonzi, yellow hummer Damon replaced by Bassy . . .

It’s just so much deeper for having so many false starts and promising times with no payoff.
Feels like it’s been 30 years (and still counting, I know) in the works than just what happened in the offseason,
which is how the good promises seemed over the years: It’s been a good 5 months, so let’s see what we can do.
This feels more like the cultured, gestated work of a mature and maturing adult.

I like it.

I have talked to this concept before. The feeling that going thru the hard times and false starts makes getting to the promised land a lot more satisfying. Here’s to getting there

Last year; but this year is way better

The feeling is way stronger. I’m just plain excited about this team and I was excited last September too. Now my anticipation of success is much greater and I am more intrigued by the player combinations we have now. Rudy/Oden/Bayless add so many interesting angles to our beloved team.

Ah, but there is good news. It appears the bloom is already off the McPalin rose, the baby bump she gave McCain is already gone, as everyone from here to Wasilla is sick to death of hearing about her. Every day that goes by it comes clearer that the Sarah juggernaut is no juggernaut at all but merely an increasingly disturbing PR stunt, and a bit of a disgrace for John McCain himself, whose once-noble aura of integrity and class has essentially vanished.

A potent backlash is coming fast. Actually, it began almost immediately, just after the Republican National Convention, when the GOP cheerfully announced they'd raised a whopping one million bucks in the 24 hours following Palin's speech, so inspired was the heavily drugged conservative base by her teleprompter-reading skills (she didn't write a single word of her own speech, of course; it came from a former Bushite, well before she was the VP pick).

First time ever!

I took the efforts of the 90’s Blazers and the postseason for granted while growing up…. then came the dark era (which I directly attribute to Zach Randolph). With that said, this is the most eager I’ve ever been for an NBA season.

Dave, I'm w/ you on the fall of '99

And to think I was happily singing the praises of a certain ex-GM back then (shhh, don’t tell anyone!). Before that, I was most curious to see how Sabas would adjust to the league in ‘95, and of course every fall from ’89 to ’92 was full of hope and excitement. If I remember correctly, the first game in the ’84-’85 was temporarily stunning (“Kiki got 47? Maybe they’re headed somewhere!”), and the post-championship fall was exhilarating: the brilliant play, the rocking crowds, the great new uniform design (and eventually the 50-10 start).

The start of the 90-91 season when we went 19-1

Coming off of a trip to the Finals and adding Danny Ainge to the mix. I still remember watching the opening night game against Houston. If I remember correctly we got a dunk within seconds of tip-off. That put an already rabid crowd into a frenzy.

Them were the days.

I'm a little confused by your tactics

Last year was pretty exciting...until the incident.

However it doesn’t compare to this year. I’m as excited about Roy, LMA and the other guys as I am about Oden. I’ve got my pre-season tickets on my fridge and they’re driving me crazy that I can’t use them right now. Even though it’s only pre-season I’m glad I’ll get to go to Oden’s first game.

by Bskey on Sep 19, 2008 11:54 PM PDT reply actions

The last time I really felt like this

was in 1974 – Walton’s first year. The anticipation and excitement to see Walton on the court in a Blazer uniform was even more intense than it is now for Oden (although the last year of waiting for Greg has elevated my Blazer fever to a dangerous level). Nearly all Blazer fans followed Walton’s incredible college career (two 30-0 seasons, 2 NCAA championships, but ironically a loss in the championship game his last year at UCLA) with a realistic hope we might someday have the opportunity to draft him, so he was even better known than Oden.

There’s a few interesting parallels with ‘74’. Walton joined the Blazers as part of a Big-3 C/PF/SG trio consisting of Walton, Wicks (previous rookie-of-the-year) and Petrie (previous rookie-of-the-year). We were also coached by an ex-Sonic coach and point guard (player-coach Lenny Wilkins). The Blazers hadn’t made the playoffs in the previous 4 years, but everyone expected that was about to end. But it was 3 years before we made the playoffs (and won the NBA title), and Walton was the only one of the Big-3 or coach to get there.

This time I’m betting our current Big-3 are all part of the next Blazer Championship, and I hope Nate is too.

by BlazerFanSince1970 on Sep 19, 2008 11:59 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah

Wilkens as player-coach was also a star (but aging) PG. I think the first game was a double-overtime win, and everyone was sky high. Seems like we won even though Walton and Wilkens both fouled out.

But I don’t think I was as expectant then as I am now. I don’t think I’ve ever been looking forward to a regular season so much. The only thing, to me, that really compares was the start of the playoffs in 77. We were starting to believe it all could possibly happen, and nobody really expected it that year, but it was kind of there as a dream possibility, with the expectation it would happen sometime in the next couple of years.

And because it was the first time we’d even made the playoffs, that was just so exciting. The Drexler teams never had that same feel to it, even if we’d won it all. But this year does because we’ve been in the wilderness a few years.

The most amazing thing about my amazing ego is I have amazingly little about which to be egotistical.
The pick and roll this year will emphasize "roll" followed by "dunk", followed by the wailings and lamentations of your women.

"The Drexler teams never had that same feel"

Depends on perspective…while I became a fan in 77, it was the Drexler teams that felt like my team. All those 1st round exits after the title run (and the 1 time we missed the playoffs) made the Drexler teams feel very special to me.

The Drexler teams were very special. And the city being decked out in red and black everywhere backed it up.

by Timmay! on Sep 20, 2008 10:42 AM PDT up reply actions

I didn't say it wasn't special

but the anticipation wasn’t the same as 77. Before 77, we’d never even been to the playoffs. The Drexler years were just trying to accomplish something that we’d already done before.

Even the 91 playoffs?

After going to the finals in 1990, then fielding a better team, breaking the team record for wins, the 1991 team had amazing expectations.

by Timmay! on Sep 20, 2008 3:15 PM PDT up reply actions

The difference was

the ‘89-’90 team surprised most people by getting to the NBA Finals. I think most folks paying attention at the beginning of that season thought the team would be very good, but that was an amazing run. The surprise factor eliminated the anticipation in the previous off-season. After we made the Finals, on the other hand, all anybody wanted was to get back and win it. So we weren’t really anticipating the regular season, but the playoffs. The anticipation was sky high but it happened in March-April rather than September-October.

Therefore the comment that there was never this kind of anticipation before a regular season during the Drexler years is probably technically correct. However I’d argue that the anticipation going into the playoffs back then dwarfed this anticipation and it isn’t even close…just as the anticipation with this team entering the playoffs will dwarf what we feel right now.

It bears repeating . . .

. . . the first time I visited Portland was the morning after the L[xxx]rs won that 1991 series.
I didn’t know that; all I sensed was that the town just seemed so dead and kinda sad and flat.
Sure, this was during the rough economy of the early 90’s, but I think the playoff exit
had a lot to do with the way Portland was feeling when I was first introduced.

We were good, so good

As I said above it was the anticipation and excitement of Walton’s first year that most reminds me of how I feel now awaiting Oden’s debut. But the 77/78 season, the year after the championship, was by far the best Blazer basketball I’ve ever seen (until Walton went down we were 50-10), and arguably some of the best team basketball ever played. Walton was a point-center at the high post (led the team in assists), and initiated the fast break with amazingly quick outlet passes. I went to every home game feeling certain we were going to win. I’m sure you remember that regular season was glorious to watch because we knew we were seeing a special version of basketball. We also knew we were destined to win another championship that year. But destiny is never immune to injuries.

by BlazerFanSince1970 on Sep 21, 2008 2:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes

I’ve never seen a team play like that. And anticipation for 77-78 was very, very high, too, I remember that.

But even after winning the championship, I don’t think anyone really knew the 77-78 team was going to be THAT good. We would have still expected the L@kers and 76ers to challenge for the best regular season record. But then, the season started, and wow.

If that team had stayed healthy, the regular season wins record would have fallen within a couple of years. We were still young, and just going to get better.

The most amazing thing about my amazing ego is I have amazingly little about which to be egotistical.

For me, it was probably game 6 against Dallas when we came back from 0-3...

I was at that game, and I believe it was, and still is the only playoff game I have ever attended. And what a game it was! We absolutely throttled them and I had to double check and make sure that wasn’t the game where we had our miracle minute. It was not the infamous miracle minute, but we sure did put it on the mavs in that game. I remember it was non-stop standing ovations and everyone knew we were going to a game 7 at halftime. I truly believed we were going to punish the Mavs in game 7, I was sooooo excited, but it wasn’t meant to be. Regardless, the feeling I had after witnessing that game is one that has yet to be matched, and the best part is, it will be matched soon, and likely exceeded….

At the same time I can’t wait until the hype dies down and they really get settled down and we see how they play. It’s going to be the most exciting opener ever for me.

who said, “last year”. But then there was the lottery draft the preceeding summer – if anyone has forgotten THAT excitement, read the ‘07 Lottery Commemorative Thread. – that’s right up there and certainly a great beginning for last season & this. There has been lots of recent exciting anticipation. After about five games into “the streak” of last season the anticipation/fear grew with each additional game. The RG was electric for game #13.

Never Before

Last season, before the Greg announcement, the nails in our roof could barely contain my excitement. My roomates and I purchased a pair of season tickets right after the draft lottery. Having been a Blazer fan all my life, I finally felt like this team was the team of my generation and something I could really put an emotional investment into. Needless to say, when the surgery heard ’round the nation was announced, the wind in my sails was definitely diminished to a passing breeze. When the team hit its stride with the December run, my enthusiasm and excitement returned. The mood in the Rose Garden for every home game was electric and hearing fans chanting “Brandon Roy” in the concourse 20 minutes after the game had ended gave me goose bumps.

This year, the summer can’t go fast away fast enough. While the Olympics helped pass time, I still Tivo’d every single game that Spain played in and the Blazer hysteria in our house was only intensified with every play that Rudy made. This team has the talent and chance to be the best team this town has ever seen and I can’t wait to see them.

Three things I’m salivating over:
1) Halloween candy and the home opener against the Spurs
2) Greg Oden’s first dunk in a Blazer uniform
3) The electricity of the Rose Garden crowd, watching December happen from October through June

Drafting Mychal Thompson

… after winning the championship and then going 50-10 the next season. There was an amazing article in Sports Illustrated that year that talked about how awesome the Phoenix Suns were and then admitted that our road record was better than their season record. It went on and on about how flawlessly they played and how they were still hopelessly behind us by the half.

Those were some amazing times.

But this year we have the summer league hero (Jerryd) and the summer Olympic hero (Rudy) to add to some center that’s on all the basketball mag covers (Greg) and nothing compares, nothing at all, ever.

The most amazing thing about my amazing ego is I have amazingly little about which to be egotistical.
The pick and roll this year will emphasize "roll" followed by "dunk", followed by the wailings and lamentations of your women.

Getting there is nice... defending is even better...

I’m definitely geeked about this year… but the last time is probably pre-1987, when the Celtics were defending their championship 40-1 home court year. Walton coming off the bench made that team the best ever, and I was really hoping for a repeat… The other time was spring ’05, after the Sox epic ’04 season….

So I think I’ll be more geeked for two years from now, as we prepare to defend our title, and are ranked #1 preseason…

Hard to gauge...

I’m getting pretty psyched up! Hard to say, there were seasons in the past that I was pretty excited about but waiting a year for Oden, the addition of Fernandez and Bayless, I don’t think there has ever been a season with more “new” to see. I’m psyched. It’s interesting because 6 weeks ago, i almost wrote an entry about how I thought Blazer fans might or should have to temper our expectations. But with the news that Oden seems to be dominating and everyone seems to have improved and are working hard, I’m really psyched. Most fans start seasons on a wave of optimism but we are surfboarding on a Tsunami here!

onl thing to look forward to

In light of recent offseason moves made by the Nuggets (giving away one of the best defensive centers in the league to another WC playoff contender), I do not have much to look forward to this season with my favorite team. Other than what the Nuggets might get if they trade Allen Iverson, JR Smith’s continuing growth as a player, and how Carmelo will do as the longest-tenured starter on the team, and their best player. But those are long term.

The Blazers are NOW. I followed Aldridge and Roy since college (and they were one of my favorite players then), Oden since high school, avidly watched Fernandez and Rubio during the Olympics, and I’ve always had a special place in my heart for Steve Blake since his short tenure with the Nuggets. To see them grow up, become one unit, and hopefully contend for the next 5+ years, will be an amazing experience for me. I’ve never had something to look forward to like this with the Nuggets, and while its different when it’s not my FAVORITE team, it’s still the same emotions, the same excitement, and most importantly it’s good for the NBA.

Im excited about the new generation of Blazers fans

This team has always been the draw here, it was good for sooo long that like alot of posters said it was taken for granted, but there have been so many drafts with so much potential. Walter Berry being drafted no. 14 and he was the reigning collage player of the year, Never mind he was a bust the town was abuzz. Sabonis finally coming over from Russia (if he would have came over in 89 we would have three more titles) I think the best part of this current Blazers situation is this team is yours period! We are not front loaded with nba mercenaries these are Blazers choices pretty much 1-12 with a couple add ons but still this is Portlands team built by a Portland brain trust and whether they go all the way or not its worth being excited about.

The beautiful flip side! And this time it's our boy Ray Ray making a very unsurprising cameo. This is for the 2011-2012 season.

Note that Danny Granger, the best shooter in the NBA two slots closer to the center of the court, is actually the worst from this spot.

Shooting percentages as they apply to certain areas of the court. Note who one of the best shooters in the NBA from the wing is. Check out the guy dominating under the hoop as well. Pretty impressive for a 6'9'' guy.
