Blazer TV Schedule Released

From the Trail Blazers:

TRAIL BLAZERS ANNOUNCE 2008-09 BROADCAST SCHEDULE

A Record 40 Games Will Air in High-Definition

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Trail Blazers announced today the team will televise 76 regular season games, equaling last year’s franchise record, in addition to one preseason game for the 2008-09 season. The remaining six regular season contests will air nationally on TNT.

Of the team’s 82 regular season games, 55 will air on Comcast SportsNet (CSN) and 21 can be seen on KGW Northwest NewsChannel 8. The Oct. 8 preseason game against Golden State will also air on KGW, giving fans a rare preview of the upcoming season. Additionally, five games are scheduled to be televised on ESPN, and will be simulcast locally on either CSN or KGW.

All 22 games on KGW will be broadcast throughout the state on the Trail Blazers Television Network.

The Trail Blazers continue to expand the number of games shown in High-Definition, with 40 dates now being broadcast in HDTV. That number is up from 34 last season and 10 in 2006-07, as Trail Blazers basketball in HD continues to expand. Viewers can experience HD during every locally broadcast home game, in addition to both road contests at the L.A. Clippers. A total of 32 HD games can be seen on CSN and eight on KGW.

Mike Barrett, nine-year veteran of the Trail Blazers broadcast team and author of the popular “Barrett’s Blog” on trailblazers.com, will mark his sixth season as television play-by-play announcer, while Mike Rice enters his fourth season as television commentator and 19th overall as a Trail Blazers broadcaster.

Sideline reporter Rebecca Haarlow, studio host Tony Luftman and studio analyst Michael Holton all return for a second season.

All Trail Blazers games, preseason and regular season, will be broadcast on KXTG 95.5 FM The Game and on the Trail Blazers’ statewide radio network, with Brian Wheeler calling the play-by-play for his 11th season and Antonio Harvey marking his fourth season as commentator. Sideline reporter Jay Allen will host the radio pre- and postgame shows.

The actual schedule is printed after the "Click Here" jump for those who want it.  Feel free to consider this an open discussion of anything discussed in the press release, including media talent (Happy they're back?) and the broadcast situation.

Sideline reporter Rebecca Haarlow, studio host Tony Luftman and studio analyst Michael Holton all return for a second season.

hahaha!

rebecca harlow is hot so she gets a pass and i really think she works hard and did improve a lot over the season imo. yeah, luftman and holton. i really like michael holton as an analyst for some reason but it’s like when he is around luftman it’s like a comedy fest in their own minds. whem akamian took over last year, you immediately saw holton be way more professional! they just have too much fun together. I even think luftman is okay really, if not a little cheesy. You just cannot have these two working together. But I digress, because the sheer awesomeness of PORTLAND this year will by far overshadow anything this year!!!

He’s a GUNNER!!!

wow.

nice usage of this year twice in the same sentence. i should not drink and post. my apologies to rip city.

my rankings of Blazer media personalities

1) Bob Akamian- did a great job subbing for Luftman last year, making everyone wonder why Luftman was allowed to return.

2) Mike Barrett- A homer, but does a good job describing the action and doesn’t shriek crazily like Wheels or say stupid stuff like “no foul forthcoming” or “one plus the penalty” or “zigged when he should have zagged” like Pete Pranica used to do.

3) Rebecca Haarlow- improved greatly throughout the season. I don’t think she’s a great sideline reporter (ok, not great) so this placement speaks to how much I dislike the rest of our broadcasters.

4) Antonio Harvey- Was truly dreadful his first few years on the call. Has improved immeasurably to the point where he’s mediocre instead of terrible.

5) Brian Wheeler- The toughest guy to rank. I love some of his calls (see my sig, and I also love “timeout Lakers, and Phil Jackson is miffed, mortified and mystified!”). However, I hate his high pitched shrieks, the way he makes every opposing basket sound like both pure luck and the end of the world, and several other things he does.

6) Mike Rice. Huge homer. Bothers the heck out of me. I miss Snapper.

7) Michael Holton. Almost as bad as Luftman.

8) Tony Luftman. Does he actually think “tell them what they’ve won” is funny? It wasn’t even funny once. Dreadful.

Agree 100%. The rest of your rankings…I like everyone else, except for Tony Luftman/Michael Holton who could go.

I could go the rest of my life without ever hearing "BOOM-CHAKA-LAKA" again.

Thank God I’m getting league pass this year so I don’t have to listen to the NBA.com feed. I guess we’re lucky that the worst thing about our team is our announcers.

All the games are on TV now

so you shouldn’t have to listen to Wheels, eh?

Back in the day, we used to turn the TV volume down and listen to the Schonz…Wheels had the misfortune of following a LEGEND

don’t miss Snapper, not even a little

To be fair

I don’t have many reasons to dislike Wheels, since the only times I’ve listened to him call a game was in the car, usually only for 10-15 minutes at at time. (If I only had the choice to listen to the Blazer game on radio or follow the gametracker online, I’d follow the game online)

but I have enjoyed listening to some segments of Wheel’s show on 95.5

Someone, anyone, what do we do? Help!

Are their odds on whether Comcast makes a deal with Direct TV or Dish?

I’m at a loss, again. My stomach is turning. I want to punch something and throw up at the same time. How do we fix this? What do we as fans need to do? Practical, realistic options. I hate when people suggest boycotting. As if that were a viable option. So what else? Write in complaints to the organization? I can’t help but remember last year’s complaint box that forwarded all complaints to Direct TV and denying all responsibility and removing any blame from Comcast.

Honestly, what do we do? I feel completely helpless. Once again, thank you Trailblazers and Comcast for screwing the passionate, dedicated, patient fan that has stuck with you through thick and thin for the past 20+ years. You can preach to me all you want about building an organization that is community oriented, but this speaks volumes. Two seasons in a row. You’re obviously working real hard to fix this.

I’ll love you unconditionally, but on this topic, you disgust me.

+1

i may be in the minority but i don’t really blame the blazers too much in this circus fiasco. it makes me sick too but i think the blazers did what they felt was right not knowing that comcast would be cleansing bags about it. i was lucky enough to have comcast last year and they really have a good thing going on that network. sadly now, i live where comcast isn’t available and i feel that it is comcast that is being unreasonable here by not letting companies put them in a sports tier package to offer it to those who truly want it. i really doubt the blazers would have entered this deal at all if they thought for one minute that it would take as long as it has to get a deal going. here’s to believing in miracles!

I moved to Portland in 1976 and then to Bend in 1991

Unless something changes this will be the least amount of Blazer games I will get to watch in 32 years. 13 games. Very sad.

I don’t like Wheeler very much. I agree with this from jksnake99 above: “I hate his high pitched shrieks, the way he makes every opposing basket sound like both pure luck and the end of the world, and several other things he does.” I also hate boomchakalaka. And Harvey is lousy. I wish they would hire Kevin Calabro. He’s the best.

Here’s to hoping someone will share a link to LeaguePass every game night.

No, we have our own NBC affiliate.

We have channel 6 as our only Portland station here. But soon we are going to get a CBS station and then no more Portland news. As the 7th smallest market in the U.S. you can imagine the rookie reporters and crummy anchors we have. The weekend newscasts are especially funny.

The Blazers COULD help fix this.....

All they need to do is talk about how the current contract won’t be renewed unless carriage agreements are reached with other cable company and the sat providers within the next 60 days…..

It’s not hard, but they have to want to get the deal done, and I just don’t see any desire by ANY of the parties to resolve this. Comcast wants to charge a huge premium, the cablecos and satcos want to pay at or below national averages…and the Blazers appear perplexed.

I guess I’d better enjoy my 20+ games I can see…..

FWIW, I like Wheels, Barrett, et al. Having “homers” on the local broadcasts doesn;t really bother ma. The Schonz was a homer and he was great.

well...

so much for all 82 being on KGW! I was dreaming of a utopia where i could actually see the blazers play all season but reality bites i guess. and so will my bar tab. but for real, i am a little disappointed (sp? maybe right? kinda drunk; looks weird) that all blazer games aren’t in HD at this point but at least all the home ones are. I guess it may be tough to lug HD equipment around but I suppose maybe next year we’ll see that happen. it’s not like HD is super new. oh well. i can’t wait for the season to start!!!!

Yeah, you'd think they'd want more people to see their product.

If your cable company doesn’t offer it on TV then you can’t get it on the Internet. That’s totally backwards. Why would you watch it on the Internet when you can see it on TV.

It’s the people that can’t get it on TV who are the people who need to watch on the Internet. Just something else in life that doesn’t make any sense.

Saving Money

Guess I should thank the Blazers and Comcast for saving me the money on my NBA league pass again this year. Well to further save money, I wont drive to the games and spend hundreds of dollars at the arena with my family. I love the blazers, I hate comcast, love my Direct TV, oh well , I wonder what the NHL Package costs….
