Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Watch out for Aldridge

Aldridge, knowing he'd have a tough time going blow-for-blow and toe-to-toe with Oden in the block, took the rook out to the three-point line and started displaying some skills that I had never seen before, namely the cross-over dribble. You ever see Aldridge dance at the three-point line before shaking his man? Me neither, but I saw it yesterday.

Aldridge, with the clear advantage in foot speed, beat Oden in a variety of ways by showing off a handle that I didn't even know he possessed. He'd go between the legs over and over, just getting in that cross-over rhythm, before eventually throwing a jab step to get Oden off-balance. Once that was accomplished, Aldridge would either pull up for the long-range jumper (which he hit over and over again) or drive baseline. Think And1 mix-tape, but without the extreme ankle-breaking, and with 6-11 versus 7-0. It's not like Oden was getting embarrassed, but you could tell Aldridge was just feeling it.

The highlight of the run was Aldridge crossing over Oden near the baseline, driving to the hoop, avoiding Travis Outlaw's block attempt, then finishing with the reverse layup. So pretty.

Nice hat he's been working on his handles.

I don’t know what to say. Honestly, it’s almost ridiculous the potential we have. If everyone lives up to the hype, we are gonna be spending a lot of Junes in pre Rose Festival parades downtown (otherwise known as the only parade I’m going to, that’s for sure)…

I don't troll through other team's fansites

but do they have blog posts that they get all excited about like this? is the average nba fan as pumped up about this season as many of us are? like if I checked out an okc thunder blog (whats it called? you’ve been had.com?), would there be something about chris wilcox that says he finally figured out that you can score other than dunking, or that robert swift plans on NOT getting injured this year? I mean, I would think that oklahomanites would be hitting the chat boards hard if they got some news like that. I would say laker fans may be as pumped as us but they’re probably too busy breaking into cars or waiting in line at a club. I’m just gonna assume that everyone else is too busy watching the nfl.

You mean . . .

 . . . this one?

LaMarcus, when on the court at the PF, is the best player on the floor. He proved it again yesterday
during a workout I would classify as the best I’ve seen so far this offseason. Games were close at the end,
so guys were really focusing on playing tough defense. One-on-one play was kept to a minimum.
Fouls were called and subsequently argued. Rebounds were fought over. I think guys are starting to feel
the season is getting closer, and that realization is being reflected in the play on the court.

And LaMarcus owned it.

Last year I thought LMA

would lead the Blazers in points because everybody would be focused on Roy. This year it might just happen. The other teams are so focused on how to stop Roy and also how to keep Oden away from the ball that they’re going to forget about LMA. He’s going to be very hard to handle. That’s what makes this team so dangerous, You might be able to stop two weapons but can you stop three? What about Four? Or maybe all five?!!!?!!!

Watch out NBA, the Blazers are for real and their hungry!

The Celtics have NO chance!

LMA should lead the team in scoring...

I completely agree.

Yes, it’s the focus on Roy and Oden, but also, who is the best scorer on the team? Overall, I think it’s LMA. B Roy is still the best basketball player overall, but LMA is the best offensive threat. And it sounds like he’s only getting more dangerous.

I stand on the shoulders of giants: Yours

I especially salute your screen name – when I’m showing out-of-towners around Portland, I often ask them to pause for a moment at 23rd and Marshall in memory of QP and all those who enjoyed food-borne illness there. I struggle to describe what an institution that place was and what a hole is left in my heart. I’m not anti-Yuppification generally – 23rd was a crappy neighborhood in the 70’s – but the loss of QP seemed too high a price. Not to mention the recent closing of Music Millenium. That hurts everytime I’m back in Portland.

incidentally – no accent on the ‘e’ in amore – Italians dunt use them.

LMA!!!

After Oden went down last year I remember Nate pining about how it destroyed what he had envisioned defensively, i.e., with Greg to protect the basket, Aldridge with all his speed would be freed up to chase the ball around making a big pest of himself to the enemies bigs. Please stay healthy Greg.

Also, Casey’s post could likely take a little of the luster off Greg in the eyes of some. IMO, that would be a good thing since expectations of him have gotten so overboard and inflated that he could not have possibly lived up to them. Here we can see that Greg is actually human. Right now, he’s not the best player on the floor, he’s not the fastest big guy either. And he may not even be all that explosive right yet (per an earlier Casey post) and he needs to continue working to get in shape.

But LaMarcus? I’d noticed he’d started falling off the Bedge radar a bit, but now a blip has reappeared.

by chrischa on Sep 17, 2008 10:35 AM PDT up reply actions

Why not keep the bar high. He was pretty highly touted

Why should we lower expectations? Everyone I’ve seen post about the topic is pretty conservative anyway. The fact is that he’s been hyped as the next great big. Talk to the dudes that hyped him. We’re just excited that people are saying that. Just understand that it’s not basketball yet. We’re only talking about hype.

We can’t get realistic before the season starts. We don’t know what will happen. You can be pessimistic of optimistic. It’s more fun one way than the other. Plus, girls love dudes that are optimistic. Ever try talking to a girl for the first time by being a pessimist. Just doesn’t work out for you.

I should be paying attention to your

thoughts regarding the girls hobobob as I might have to get back into that game again someday here.

Concerning the possible downside I perceive of being over-hyped, see my reply to chrischa above, i.e. those fans whose enthusiasm and expectations are on the highest level, in some instances are the first ones to come crashing down hard and really become negative. I understand there is a difference between fans and players, but I’ve read a few elite athletes talking about how they try to never let themselves get too high, or too low. They realize the need for them to stay on an even keel. I think Brandon is one of these. Of course they have to perform. Fans don’t.

But I agree with you that Oden was extremely highly touted by many before he became a Blazer, and that it’s not at all unreasonable to be getting heart palpitations over envisioning what he could mean to our team.

I'm just a modest guy with much to be modest about

If that is conservative what do you think his ceiling is?

I know you were just having a little fun – it’s cool.

Heck I would be ecstatic if he managed to have 1 game with 30+ points, 1 game with 20 Rebs, 1 game with 10 asst, and 1 game with 5 blocks. I am smart enough to know it would all happen in one game. I am hoping his 08-09 averages look something like 22 pts, 10 rebs, 3 asst, and 3 blocks. That would be solid improvements across the board.

Conservative expectations for LMA

He’s third year now. Have to factor that in, he should have progressed farther than Oden by now, but he’ll never be the rebounding/blocks machine that Oden is.

35 ppg, 15 rpg, 12 apg, 5 bpg, 5 steals pg. 48% on 3 pointers, effective fg 82.3%.

I know some of you optimists will disagree, but that’s as far as I’m willing to go until I see more from him.

Sorry you feel that way chrischa.

Were you here last year on BE? If you were you’ll probably remember that many (certainly not all) of the very rabid fans with over-the-top expectations before the season were the first ones to come down hard and harsh on the team, coach and players when our season didn’t start out so well. Unbelievably, one or two were even trashing on Brandon Roy. So yeah, my comments sometimes contain a tempering tone, especially regarding players that have not yet played in the NBA.

But of course, by all means root, root, root as you see fit. I’d think though you should be able to disagree with an opinion I’ve offered without serving up all the sarcasm.
