National Anthem Auditions... Open? Really??
Let me just say right up front, two things:
1.) In the grand scheme of things, what I'm about to post isn't really that important. I know this. Of course, in the GRAND scheme of life and happiness and eternal significance, I'm not sure that NBA basketball is really all that significant, so I guess either way it's a wash. But spare me the "why waste time talking about this" response. If this is a place where devoted fans can break down the cases for and against Steven Hill's beard, I can discuss this.
2.) If enough people can say honestly and clearly that I'm wrong and point to several examples of publicity -- particularly internet publicity -- that they noticed prior to September 15th, then I will eat my humble pie, get off my soapbox, go home and vow to be relentless next September.
Now... having said that... what the heck happened???
Among many talents, I am a singer. I've been singing for most of my thirty-plus years on this earth. I've sung jazz, gospel, and even some opera in college.
I got the privilege to be able to sing the national anthem at the Rose Garden twice... once last season and once the season prior, both during games against the Chicago Bulls. (Even though I'm from Portland, I have tons of friends in Chicago since I lived there for eight years.)
I was hoping to do a third year straight, and I had been searching blogs and doing Google searches and I even called the switchboard asking to find out when the auditions were... and I heard nothing. Nobody could tell me anything. Yet now suddenly the auditions have already taken place.
What's up with that?
The reason why I heard about it in years past was because it was posted on blogs like this one, like the OLive Blog (when Eric Marientette was running it, even before Casey Holdahl) and on Blazers.com. I was planning to make another round of calls this week when I saw the story last night about the auditions.
Did anyone hear about this beforehand? I mean obviously the word got out somehow because people were there, but... was it on the news or something? Was it on the BFT or the MSP on 95.5? Was it on 1080 The Fan? Was there some secret text message society I was supposed to be a part of?
I'm just a little annoyed that I missed out on the opportunity. I had Todd Bosma's email address, but not wanting to look like some desperate fanboy, I refrained from emailing him in the beginning of September. Now I wish I had.
Instead I just sent Todd an email apologizing for missing the audition and asking for consideration since he's seen me before. So far he has yet to respond, and I don't really expect him to.
I'm wondering if they intentionally dialed down the publicity because they didn't want so many auditions?
If so, that kinda sucks. I mean I'm glad others have gotten a chance, but hey... I would have rather auditioned again and done badly then not gotten a chance to audition.
As it was, I was out of town on business Monday, but if I had known ahead of time maybe I could have worked something out with someone in the production staff.
Or maybe not. I don't know, maybe I should just be grateful that I got to do it twice and leave it at that.
But still... I know I can sing. I can sing well. I dig the national anthem, I love being an American, and I love the Trail Blazers. And I'm broke, so getting in doing the anthem is the only way I can ensure seeing at least one game in person without being in the extreme upper deck.
Here's the video, if you don't believe me...
(turn up your volume, the audio feed is only from the mic itself, there is no arena audio.)

I think they should let Oden sing the national anthem.
Every game.
Word.
"Jerryd is straight ahead at you. Rudy dips around. Jerryd is a rock. Rudy is the wind. Jerryd loves the ball in his hands. Rudy moves without it. Jerryd defends by getting up in your grill. Rudy plays the spaces in between. Jerryd has focused vision. Rudy sees all around him. Jerryd likes to score off of the dribble. Rudy can catch and shoot. Jerryd is aggressive. Rudy is sneaky. Jerryd will hit you hard. Rudy will annoy you until you hit him." -Dave

This is my favorite part
I had Todd Bosma’s email address, but not wanting to look like some desperate fanboy, I refrained from emailing him in the beginning of September. Now I wish I had.
I am pretty sure they purposely excluded you from the secret text society (STS) .
Anyway, if I remember correctly, you do have a good voice and too bad we wont get the pleasure of hearing ya sing this year(the anthem for the PTB that is)

If you do land a national anthem performance
just remember Coach Cheeks won’t be there to bail you out if you forget the words.

Bummer you missed out...
Especially since I’m not sure if I can take another “PigsKnuckle High School Jazz Choir” version. Criminy! There were some rare good versions last year…rare.

You're the Real McCoy, Jelani! (but not Jelani McCoy, that son of a gun former Bruin)
Actually, you know what the worst anthem was last year? Remember when that darn saxophone player did the national anthem?
I swear they had the sound turned all the way up and he was playing that Sax full bore into the microphone. I think my ears are still ringing… it was painful to listen to, but it would be been disrespectful to plug my ears.
I tend to agree with Sophia about the most interesting comment in your post—I think that emailing Todd Bosma would have been less desperate fanboy-ish than making this post… especially since Vulcan probably has paid staffers reading all of these threads.

I'm sorry you missed out
I don’t know what’s up with some of the responses here. I think your post is perfectly reasonable.

thanks for your support
I’ll wait a couple days and follow up with another email. If not, hey… there’s always next year. But next year… shoot, I’ma be relentless. I’ll be pestering people left and right.
(or I’ll get preoccupied and forget completely… one or the other.)

Call Dick Lineger at the season ticket office (503) 797-8000 ?? I think that's the number
He seems to have some connections around the building.
Based on your YouTube version, I’d say you were better than half of the performers last year. I’m surprised they don’t make a list and ask the better ones back.

Oops... it's 503-797-9600

They said something about being able to send the video on DVD if you miss(ed) the audition. See here:
http://www.nba.com/blazers/auditions.html (that’s where I found out about the auditions, was right on the homepage)
If you are unable to attend the auditions, you may send a CD/DVD of your performance to: Jennifer Ing
Game Operations Manager
Portland Trail Blazers
One N. Center Court, Suite 200
Portland, OR 97227
CDs/DVDs will not be returned and it is strongly encouraged that those interested in capturing a spot attend the auditions.
Any questions, please E-Mail them to ToddTime@trailblazers.com
Hope that helps and you get still in Jelani.

thanks so much
I saw that part about being unable to attend the auditions, but I didn’t see that email address. That’s different from the one I had, so thanks… I’ll try that one.

whoops
I meant to say, I saw something in the OLive story about being able to send in video of your performance… I didn’t see that link on the front page. Must have missed it altogether.
Good stuff… anyway, thanks for your ideas, folks… if I hear from them, I’ll let you all know.
Long live the BlazersEdge crew. =)

Yeah
I’d rather hear someone talk stink about the NA than have someone do this.
The Josh abides.

Yeah, that's a tough reality in America, even today...
I guess Josh Howard’s ancestors weren’t exactly partying when the Declaration of Independence was signed and there’s still some diversity of percpective on the subject a few centuries later.

THAT SUCKS!
I wanted to try out this year too. I thought I had a good chance. I’m bummed I missed it.
