Think Division not Conference

With the predictions and hopes that I have been reading about the trailblazers I wanted to remind people of one thing.

Star-divide

Its been a general consensus that the goal should be able to make the playoffs and that we shouldn't be upset with a first round exit. The seeding has been talked about in the 7-6th range. This is what I wanted to talk about, with the seeding rules the lowest the a division leader will be seeded is 4th. This last season the Utah Jazz were a 4th seed only because they won the Northwest Division, the fifth seed had a better record. When you think of this season, stop thinking of the eight teams we have to beat, instead think of our division.

The Thunder and the Wolves will be representing the cellar of our Division, not to discount them but lets be real. Next are the Nuggets, without Camby they are still a threat, but they will not be winning over 50 games. Now the top of the class in our division will be (or should be) the Jazz, they are the team that we should be fighting all season for the division title. Yes I feel that we should make the playoff this season but I also believe that the best case would be to win our division. Now I'm gonna leave you with this thought, last season we won the our series with the Jazz, including victories in their arena.

I hope this makes you think.

Winning the Northwest division

is a great goal to shoot for this season. After that, we’ll own the division for a decade.

I shoot layups like they're jumpers.

Good Point...

…It will probably come down to Utah, Denver and Portland again. It might be helpful to examine the respective schedules, especially those games during the stretch run, as division champ will be determined by overall record, not necessarily head-to head games. Then, even the fourth seed will face a good team in the first round.

by Dr Dave on Sep 11, 2008 3:13 PM PDT reply actions

true...true

still the higher the seed the better the chance of advancement usually. and Denver isn’t gonna be able to compete in the division, for a low seed yes, but division title no. They won 50 games last season, now take away Camby and take away 5 games and you got a winning season but not a title

for the last couple of seasons the Jazz have struggled early the finally come together in about December

or January. So, I think we should focus most on just getting wins. At the same time though, winning the Northwest division is something that I think is entirely possible. It will come down to a few game difference between the Jazz and the Blazers in my opinion.

by Zaron5551 on Sep 11, 2008 3:27 PM PDT reply actions

Agreed,

but I think it works in our favor that the Jazz will have difficulty posting as good of a regular season road record as they had last year.

the Jazz seem kind of thin tough, a major injury to Boozer or Williams and the Jazz aren't nearly as competitive.

also i could see the Jazz trying top dump kirilenko’s contract so that they can resign Boozer, so that might weaken they’re chances as well.

by Zaron5551 on Sep 11, 2008 3:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Mhm, last year they finished 54-28, a winning percentage of .659

If they could come close to that again, we would have to make a really big jump from 41-41. While Utah hasn’t really improved in the off-season, they also haven’t become any worse by losing a major player or so (that could happen next season… hope). It would be a nice goal to get home court advantage and possibly an easier first round opponent, but our first one should be to make the playoffs at all regardless of position.

Utah off-season activity so far:
Players acquired: Kosta Koufos (#23), Ante Tomic (44), Tadija Dragicevic (53) on draft day. Of these probably only Koufos will be on the roster on opening night. Brevin Knight (from L.A. Clippers) for Jason Hart as a backup PG. Knight is the more experienced player, but also more injury prone. They managed to retain C.J. Miles (matched offer sheet), and extended Williams long term.
Williams played well in the Olympics, Boozer not so much (limited time), Kirilenko was pretty bad. Okur opted not to play for Turkey in the EuroBasket qualifier. So as it stands now none of their big guys got any injuries, which will be important.

Koufos is talented, good skills and mobility

He had to replace Greg Oden in Ohio, so he had very big shoes to fill… But he will make his way in the NBA. The other two, we will see. They are not very athletic or physical guys, so it’s hard to see how their game will translate to the NBA. They will stay in Europe for a while, and might get bigger contracts there.

I dont think we should shoot for winning the division this year

we should just get wins and more of them than last season. I never weighed in on the “your official prediction” post by Dave but I would put us at around 47-50 wins and 7 th or 8th seed. I Would be satisfied at meeting the Lakeshow in the first round b/c it would be a great series that we have a legitimate chance at winning . The jazz aren’t gonna be any worse. As Norsktroll pointed ot above they are pretty much the same team with no major injuries to their “bigs” so we have a reason to believe they will be big competition.

I'm not sure why you would consider what was statistically an anomaly to be the norm and hold true for next season.

01-02: 44 wins for the 8th seed in the West
02-03: 44 wins for the 8th seed in the West
03-04: 42 wins for the 8th seed in the West
04-05: 45 wins for the 8th seed in the West
05-06: 44 wins for the 8th seed in the West
06-07: 42 wins for the 7th and 8th seed in the West

OK. I could go back more, but I think I’ve made my point.

The Dude abides

by noaher on Sep 11, 2008 4:53 PM PDT up reply actions

More math.

I added these up and I don’t even know why.

Total wins of 1st through 8th seed in the Western Conference

2008 – 434
2007 – 418
2006 – 406
2005 – 426
2004 – 416
2003 – 421

Somewhere in there I am agreeing that last year was unusual and 50 wins definitely will not be required to get an 8 seed this year. A mild weaking of several teams in the west and a mild strengthening of several teams in the east will balance things again.

Last year was a high number of wins with the first seed at only 57. 2004 was the only other year (represented here) without a 60+ win first seed.

I always want The Blazers to win their Division

I was big time into rooting for this, last Season. We had the gol dang thing in our hands breifly. We beat the Division Leader (Nuggies) in some big games to get it. Oh yah, I was ridin’ that high for awhile.

The Salty Utes made a move (Kyle Korver) at the trading deadline last year that allowed them to garner the Division Title. These kinda moves will be considered again this year, if your Team is in the battle and has a need.

My LAL hatred stems from them being The Blazers Division rival. Now the Jizz & Nuggies are the ones who stand in our way. I find it easy to envision and despise Sloan’s Morman Desert Camp. Run AK47, Run, run away as fast as you can.

It is a lot easier for me to root for this goal, when I think we have a good Team.

I’d say build on what we accomplished last season. More wins would be great. So would winning the division. Good goals to shoot for. Hopefully we can do both or more. But first we have to prove last season was no fluke.

Uh..

don’t mean to get all critical here, but here’s how I interpret this post:
“We might get the four spot if we outrank the Jazz – that would be nice”

and most (or some, at least) of the comments I interpret as:
“We should just focus on winning games”

Isn’t that kind of obvious? Shouldn’t “we” (really, the Blazers, not us, but whatever) focus on winning ALL of the games? I don’t think SamGoody was advocating getting more wins than the Jazz and sandbagging the rest of the season – he was just pointing out something interesting. Plus, doesn’t advocating focusing on “winning games” sort of short-sell our aspirations? Isn’t winning games kind of the point?

I mean, seriously, how are these “counterpoints” productive? It’s like saying we shouldn’t focus on winning the game, we should focus on scoring more points than our opponent. It’s kind of funny that people think a winning record is a feat mutually exclusive from winning our division – one often begets the other, no? Case in point, OF COURSE “we” should focus on winning – in fact, it might make us divisional champs. Which is something I heard that SamGoody guy pointed out the other day. Keep the (desperately rare these days) good points coming, SG.

I think

we should focus on a sweep. 82-0, baby.

So far this season, we’re on course for that. Don’t let anybody tell you we aren’t.

Once we’ve accomplished our sweep, division titles and conference seeding will work themselves out. That’s a certainty.

exactly...

all I was trying to say was as well as striving to have a winning record we should also keep in mind that we can possibly have an easier time in the playoff with a higher seed. To get this seed we need to win our division. Its just something that is important to keep in mind this season. I also pointed out that we match up pretty well against the jazz, which is always something to appreciate in a division rival.

by SamGoody on Sep 12, 2008 10:55 AM PDT up reply actions

Yes, but remember

A 4 seed because we win our division is no better than a 5 side unless you have a better record than the 5 seed. A higher seed doesn’t necessarily mean home court advantage in that case, you have to have a better record.

Since I don’t really expect Utah to drop below the top 6 this year, I think “division champion” becomes irrelevant. If we win the division, we’ll be in the top 5 anyway.

And if we’re the fifth best, we’ll play away to the 4th best, whether we win the division or not. If we’re fourth best, we’ll play home to the fifth best, division win or not.

It really only makes a difference if you were going to finish 6th or lower. But I just can’t see us beating out Utah and finishing 6th or lower, that means they would be 7th or lower. Not happening.

I actually didn’t want to get to into the whole thing. But being a 4th seed instead of 6th or lower would be a big mental and emotional lift, and I actually don’t see the top 4 moving/changing, except for Utah. I feel that chances are If we won the division utah would be right behind us in seeding. Just a feeling so please no extra posts agreeing or not please.

by SamGoody on Sep 13, 2008 8:19 AM PDT up reply actions

Absolutely 4th is better than 6th

That wasn’t my point, though. My point is 4th vs. 5th is no real difference (what matters between them is best record, not who gets the nominal 4th seed). So the only way it matters is if Utah drops at least to 7th overall, and we’re ahead of them in 6th (or lower).

You are right that if they drop, this could be a relevant discussion later in the season. And it is always good to win the season series so you have the tie breaker advantage, and also just because it’s ALWAYS GOOD to beat Utah! :-) (Sorry for shouting, but some things are worth shouting).

As I said, I don’t think it will matter because I don’t see Utah dropping that far — about the lowest they could drop is 6th, and that would be a surprise. But they’ll have to drop all the way to 7th or lower, and we would have to finish 6th overall or lower but ahead of them, for it to matter. Could happen, but seems unlikely.

Good post

Even with a rough start to their season, the Blazers have a very good shot of beating out the Nuggets (not to mention the Wolves & the Thunder). Getting ahead of the Jazz this season is a tall order. But there’s always that little thing called injuries.

Not to jinx our rivals in Mormon-town, but every team gets hit with the injury bug sooner or later, and this might be the Jazz’ turn. In that case, providing the BLAZERS stay reasonably healthy, “Hello #4 slot!”

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
