Darius Miles might not play with Celtics
I was checking the rumors area on ESPN and I see that Sam Cassell will play one more year with the Celtics. I head over to realGM and read in a thread that Miles spot might have just been taken when Sam signs. Does this mean that Miles won't play? Or is he the 13th or 14th man already?
Here's a link:
15th roster spot taken by Cassell
I'm still trying to find a list of all signed players to see.

Cassell makes 16 coming to camp
Miles would have to beat out someone with a one-year contract just to make the roster. Competition would be Gabe Pruitt and Bill Walker (who’s not getting cut). Considering that reports make it sound like he is playing on a chicken bone it almost seems impossible that Boston would go injury over youth and cut Pruitt just for Miles. (Even if he did make the roster, when would he play? If he gets 10 games, clearly it’s a conspiracy).

Roster
Ray Allen (G), Tony Allen (G), Glen Davis (F/C), Kevin Garnett (F/C), J.R. Giddens (G), Eddie House (G), Darius Miles (F), Patrick O’Bryan ©, Kendrik Perkins ©, Paul Pierce (F), Leon Powe (F), Gabe Pruitt (G), Rajon Rondo (G), Brian Scalabrine (F), Bill Walker (F/G).
Free Agents: P.J. Brown (said he will not be back), Scott Pollard (very unlikely he will be invited back), Sam Cassell (G)
Unsigned Draft Pick: Semih Erden ©
Now if Cassell comes back, it’s 16 and really not looking too good for Darius. Although the Celtics are not really deep on small forward, with just Pierce and 6’6 rookie Bill Walker if they don’t take Darius. Maybe if the Celtics are not convinced of Pruitt and they would still have guards House and Cassell they might look to trade him (e.g. Miami is still looking for a backup PG/SG). Which in turn would open another spot.

The Miami Heat ...
are just waiting for Chris Quinn to sign his one-year, $972,581 qualifying offer. That’ll give the Heat six guards under contract, which includes Dwyane Wade, Marcus Banks, Daequan Cook, Mario Chalmers, Yakhouba Diawara, and Quinn. Right now, Heat GM Randy Pfund’s main quandry is finding a way to dump Udonis Haslem for someone who’s got an expiring contract, with the following being an example of that.
The New York Knicks would get a face-to-the-basket center in Darko Milicic, the Memphis Grizzlies would fill its void at power forward with Haslem, and the Heat would obtain Malik Rose’s expiring contract.

When Walker signed
a day or so after Darius did, it really hurt Miles’ chances. There was a lot of speculation at the time that Darius signed that Walker was going to play overseas for a year, but apparently the Celtics decided to have him as part of the lineup for this season.
Yes, if Cassell signs, Miles looks to be #16. Now, Patrick O’Bryant’s contract is not guaranteed, like Darius’, and theoretically could be cut without significant monetary loss to make room for Darius. But I’m still not worried. I don’t believe that Darius will go back on the Blazers’ team salary figure this year.

O'Bryant's isn't guaranteed? It's 2 years, $3.1 million. That sounds pretty guaranteed to me.

Somebody's been using Hoopshype again.....
No, the best sources on the web tell me that O’Bryant’s contract is 2 years for minimum salary (about $1.65 million total) and is not fully guaranteed. He might have some partial guarantees – I’d have to research further to try and find out – but it’s not fully guaranteed.

Thanks
but I realize that this summer has been anything but ‘fast’ in updates. Actually, I’m in the process of preparing for a re-launch of the site with a much better look to it. Hopefully getting that done will allow me to focus more on numerical updates.
Always accurate? I’ll say that I’m always willing to make changes when I learn that errors exist in the numbers – and there have been those. But I think I’ve got most of my ‘guesses’ pretty close. In a few cases, I’ve been able to get official confirmation of the status of certain contracts, so I know those are right.

Hoopshype is nice, but like you said they sometimes miss the point especially on option years and that makes the whole info not very reliable which is the whole point of a salary / cap overview.

I would have taken Bill Walker over Darius in his current state by a mile
Walker dropped to the second round because of knee problems. The guy is a mad dunker, still young, and if his shooting gets better he could have a bright future in the league. Giddens is also solid. Boston, you don’t even want Darius.

Newcomers.
Usually it’s not a bad thing that half your roster is not new when you won a championship the year before. Both of these conversations could be equally as fun.
“Hey, do you think Rudy and Oden and Bayless will dominate in their rookie year?”
“Hey, do you think Darius could contribute? Remember when we won the championship a few months ago?”
by lukeyhere on Sep 11, 2008 1:06 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
They also have conversations like this
http://www.greenbandwagon.com/2008/9/11/612119/boston-celtics-sign-doc-ri
It’s funny how the NBA works. For example, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that Cleveland could have won game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals. Hypothetically what happens if P.J. Brown doesn’t hit that shot down the stretch? Or what if the Truth runs out of gas? Of course that is oversimplifying the issue. A lot more went into it. And just because the Celtics did not roll through the first 3 rounds like the Lakers, it does not mean they got lucky. Still, now is as good a time as any to reflect on how much that championship did for Rivers. It enhanced his reputation as a coach and made him a lot of money. You could even make the case that it saved his job.
The road to glory narrow…

Considering...
that the Blazers are trying to sneak out of a monster contract which they signed, reaction (outside OR) would be of cheering and pride.
by 0004248939 on Sep 12, 2008 10:10 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Huh?
He’s getting paid either way. The Blazers aren’t trying to sneak out of anything. He gets the good end of the deal — fully paid for his Blazer contract, and a chance to make good and earn even more money if he really can still pay. The medical retirement only helped him.
And if the Celtics were to do that, people would rightly think that they just used Darius to stick it to the Blazers, and that it was despicable.
If he makes the team and plays through the year, more power to him. But if he plays ten games for one minute and then they cut him, it will be war between organizations, and Stern will probably have something to say about circumventing the rules before they even try that.
The most amazing thing about my amazing ego is I have amazingly little about which to be egotistical.

In what way is playing Darius circumventing the rules? This isnt't the Church, the last time I checked.
and obviously, they are trying to get out of their SALARY CAP (is that better) contractual responsibilities.
by 0004248939 on Sep 12, 2008 1:27 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Salary cap
is not a moral or ethical reality, it is a collective bargaining agreement. And the CBA has specific provisions under which a player’s salary can be removed. Right? Therefore, if those provisions are fulfilled (and they were, to the letter), there is no “sneaking out of obligations”.
Circumventing the rules? The rules say that a team is exempted from their salary cap obligations if those provisions are fulfilled. To play Darius for one minute at the end of ten games and then cut him would be an obvious and intentional circumvention of the rules which allow a team to be exempted.
None of that applies, of course, if Darius actually succeeds, plays through the year, and contributes. It would only be an issue if the Celtics do what GreatOden’sRaven suggested.
The most amazing thing about my amazing ego is I have amazingly little about which to be egotistical.
The pick and roll this year will emphasize "roll" followed by "dunk", followed by the wailings and lamentations of your women.

Actually, most of the rules regarding this situation seem to be made for a player making a comeback with his old team
That he comes back with another team didn’t seem to be at the heart of the paragraph in question. So legally this whole situation is pretty uncharted territory. There even might be a chance to request another medical retirement waiver for Darius even if he plays the ten games, but then retires for the same injury.
