Yeah is was a good read. His writing made the article a little more enjoyable. I really feel
I understand Travis a whole lot better. I think Travis thinks that by getting the green light that’s going to take the pressure off and he’ll play better. He needs to realize that will only make him a chucker and take him out of his game. He needs to know that the fans know he’s great but that it’s more important to be team oriented. Hitting the shots you do get is what is important Travis.

I need my emotions to get in check.
It seems that for the last month I’ve almost cringed everytime I log onto BlazersEdge because of the rumors, and dividedness over such a talented player. My username obviously shows my bias, but while reading that story by Quick my eyes were welling up. I know he is valuable, everyone does. It would break my heart for us to let him go now that he is finally showing some real confidence.
Just rememebr.

No, but in the hard copy Oregonian
there’s a picture of Travis trying one.
Also a big picture of him & a small fish he caught (and answering my query below, the caption quotes him as saying “I would catch bigger fish if I didn’t have to work out so much.” )
Two other picture (nice advantage of the hard copy – lots of pictures) – Trav on a tractor with a glimpse of his new house (quintessentially Southern) in the background and another of him talking to the kids at the at-risk school.

Best of both worlds. The rest of the feature on him will be interesting, too, when we learn what Nate has to say.

And no word
on his conditioning. Has he worked out at all or just walked around his acreage and wrestled with the family?
He didn’t come in early with others and JQ didn’t mention how he looked. I hope that he learned his lesson last season and spent time on his body this summer.

My honest reaction to reading this...
Now I believe the trade rumors. It does not sound like Travis is going to fit on the Blazers. He cares too much about getting shots.
Now, if I thought about it a little more, I might think something else. Definitely a great piece of writing.
by PoliSam on Sep 1, 2008 7:08 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Gotta say
there were some things in this article that made me a little nervous too. Wanting to pull up for a for a jumper on a lay up, loving every shot, wishing he could be like C. Anthony, and Kobe, wanting as many shots as Roy, and LMA. I’m on board with the 8 reb thing, and I love how family oriented he is. He seems like a very nice guy.
My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

You must've missed this part
Later, back at his home and away from the slangy, bravado that went on at the eatery, Outlaw admits he was playing.
by grimc on Sep 1, 2008 9:52 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Right. And I'm also not concerned because
of this quote later on in Quick’s terrific piece:
“I don’t want people to think I’m satisfied with coming off the bench all the time,” Outlaw says. “I want to start … I feel like I have earned it. But it makes sense for me to come off the bench.”
He was just talking smack with his guys in the restaurant. And this quote is pretty clear: he doesn’t want anyone to think he’s satisfied with coming off the bench (which he probably shouldn’t be if he’s the type of motivated player we fans like to see) but with more shots it’s probably the best thing for him and for the team.

It could be read that way
but I don’t think that Quick’s intention was to limit it to just the crowd comment. I don’t know why people are getting their undies in a bunch about what Trout said while hanging out with old friends in a familiar hometown joint. It was just smack. I wouldn’t be surprised if Quick clarifies it in the next couple of days.

good interview
but I didn’t like what I read, at all.
Too full of himself, only worried about getting more shots, hitting 360 fadeways.
No talk about defense, about the team getting into the playoffs, winning something.
He better be careful, because I’m not even sure he’ll be in the rotation by the end of the season.
by Falcao on Sep 1, 2008 7:41 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I've always thought that Travis had the same body as Kobe but just not the focus. Now that his
shot has come so far and is getting even better he has a right to want more shots. I just think he wants to be taken more seriously. When the season starts he’s get his chance to prove himself. His jump shot is unstoppable when he gets it going, no one can block it.

The l*kers
want K*be to attack the basket.
Why would we be happy with Outlaw just shooting jump shots?
It’s a great thing that he can get a shot against anyone, but travis need to learn how to become a more efficient scorer. And a better rebounder. And a better defender.
by Falcao on Sep 1, 2008 8:07 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Outlaw already takes plenty of shots
On a per-minute basis Outlaw takes even more shots than Roy or Aldridge, though Roy and Aldridge score points at a higher rate because they are more efficient.
Outlaw shouldn’t be getting any more shots than he already is unless he proves that he can score more efficiently.

This is the reason why athletes are often reluctant to say anything other than the standard boilerplate. The guy speaks candidly, saying the things you would expect from a player in a league where sell-assurance is a necessity, and people try to make him out to be some kind of selfish me-firster despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary throughout his career.

It was a very good read because it was not the standard politically correct answers that players cite, so as not to cause controversy.

Thanks Quick...more great insight
Another well written article from JQ, I always love seeing it from a different view. The information however was a bit concerning though. Falling in love with the jump shot to the point of wanting to pull up on fastbreaks is rediculous. This guy is an athletic freak who needs to take advantage of it, jumpers all day is not it. Has he figured out how to go left yet? Or dribble the ball without his head down? 8 rebounds a game sounds great but he’s in fantasy land if he thinks he can collect those boards by being complacent and floating around the perimeter. That many boards don’t just come to a sf, a consistent effort must be made and he hasn’t shown that he wants it that bad. It’s unfortunate because if he used the dribble to create shots as much as he settles for jumpers he could be a real pita to defend against, just like Rudy IS.
Bayless and Rudy will probably both be more efficient scorers than Travis so do we need another jump-shooter on the second unit or more defense? If Bayless and Rudy can carry the weight offensivley for the second unit then Travis is expendable. Somebody who plays better defense will be inserted, Batman anyone?

Batum getting playing time
over Travis, even just as a defensive specialist, just is not going to happen. Barring injuries, Batum probably wont even suit up for most games. I think Trav does have some stiff compatition in the second unit, but his playing time will still be there this season. This season we will be trying to finalize what we want this roster and rotations to look like for the next 5, 8, or 10 season, and Travis will have plenty of opportunity to prove his case. Some better scorers coming off the bench (Rudy, Bayless) may make it difficult for Travis to get all those shots he is talking about wanting, but if he feels like he is contributing on a winning team, I don’t think he will be one to complain.

best beat writer in the NBA
Quick does it again… how long will we get to selfishly keep Quick as our beat writer?! Enjoy it while it lasts!
Super Trout is a stud, and it seems that he is actually saying what is on his mind – and it is mostly positive! Every player with his athleticism/capabilities SHOULD want to dominate and have the confidence to feel they could win games as ‘the man’. It is Nate’s job to organize the players into a team mindset (which he excels at). But while every player in the game should have that confidence, not every player has the humility to recognize that when you start to think too much about where you are as a player, that you will start to get stuck on yourself. Trout’s acknowledgement of that should give everyone a big breath of fresh air. I am proud of T-Law as a Blazer, and wish him nothing but the best. He is going to continue to be a big part of this team, particularly if he continues to improve like he has every year!

You guys can spin this however you want
But I don’t think anyone on the Blazers is going to be happy reading this.
“Just playing” or not, this is not the kind of thing Nate and KP (or even Brandon and LMA) are going to be pleased hearing in the press.
I hope he doesn’t start chucking up shots like a drowning man gulping air, because that seems to be where this is heading.

It spins this way for me, when I read it
Jason wanted to share with the reader a feeling that a player has during a game.
This was Travis’s when jump shooting. The arc of the ball through the air and the sound it makes as it whooses through the net. This is an experience Trout enjoys during a game. I find it very cool and can relate.
I can relate it to the sports I played. Baseball and Softball. The moments remembered. Sometimes the moments are during fast paced action where the details seem to be in slow motion. Other times there is a moments when you can seem to become a spectator and take a moment to watch and enjoy what you have done. The power hitter in Baseball who knows he has hit it out of the Park or the Jump shooter in Basketball that knows they have nailed the three point shot.
Thanks Trout, for sharing your feelings and that you like it.

Not "pissed"
I said “not pleased”. And they won’t be, even if they know this is how he feels.
To say he wants more shots, and would be happiest where he has the green light, even in jest, and then mentions how it’ll be tough to keep this team together (I’m assuming because he thinks, or the team thinks in private, that there won’t be enough shots to go around- it CAN’T be money), that doesn’t strike me as the kind of statement the Blazers would like out there.
I realize it was an honest look into one of our players, but it kinda hit me as the opposite of what I thought Travis was about. Can you imagine Brandon making this kind of statement? Or Blake? Or Oden? Even if they think the same thing?
Me either.

As I said in the "Jason Quick is a Laker Agent" Thread, I think he is reacting to the increased competition
Brandon and Greg are virtually “out of competition”. Blake knows that he is now in a competition, but he has an advantage as a veteran, doesn’t need to score much to be perceived as valuable, and never was the best player on his teams (not even in college) anyway. Travis who has the longest tenure on this team but needed time to develop (see his complaints about the third year) feels a need to demonstrate he still wants the SF spot and wants to be a major player on this team.
Odenied: Asked whether he noticed Oden favoring his right knee, Frye dismissed it entirely. "He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors."

Oden, yes.
Brandon and Blake, not so much. Just because they seem to be better trained PR-wise. But I really don’t take it as anything more than Travis stating the obvious: shooting is fun, shooting more would be funner and the Blazers probably won’t be able to keep everybody together forever. I see it as healthy ambition. And if this behavior is the kind of “locker room cancer” issue we have to deal with (our stud 6th man suggesting that he’d like to be a starter) than I’m pleased as punch. If Travis Outlaw is the most disgruntled guy on this team, I think that’s a good sign.
by Jumbo on Sep 3, 2008 9:37 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't blame him one bit
If I’m in a company and I’m always getting the crap jobs, I’m eventually going to want to find somewhere where I can do something I enjoy more. Especially when there are other companies knocking on the door offering just that. So who can blame him? I think he’ll stay humble though and accept his role. If he asks for a trade, it won’t be a demand, it will be a request and in private.
I’ve totally reversed on Outlaw. I used to think we should trade him and trade him now—that he was a detriment on defense and inconsistent on offense. He’s turned both ends of the court around and become a reliable and even dynamic player.

Admittedly, just about every time I’ve seen someone bust their butt, bend over backwards, or make huge sacrifices for their employer they got screwed. They were told later they would get taken care off then something would come up.
These guys have to maximize their potential and cash in as much money as they can before they break down. I still think KP is going to take care of a few guys everyone says is on the chopping block.

Outlaw's comments need to be taken in context
He was talking trash with his buddies. I say some ludicrous stuff when I’m talking trash with my friends too.
That being said, his comments strike a bit of fear in Blazer fans, because for some people it confirms when many have suspected for a long time with Outlaw…that he’s a chucker….and proud of it. And truthfully, Outlaw is a chucker, but within the confines of his role on the 2nd unit it works. However, if Outlaw is not shooting well, he struggles on the offensive end because his passing skills are limited. I really can’t remember any plays last season where he set someone up for an easy basket.
Outlaw finally tasted success in the NBA last season and we all don’t want to see it go to his head. Hopefully, he stays humble and understands that his job is to provide whatever the TEAM needs to win…the same goes for everyone else on the team. If that’s chucking up 20 shots then fine. But if that means taking 6 or 7 shots grabbing 6 or 7 rebounds and playing solid defense, then that’s what we want to see him do. If he can’t handle that after all of the patience the Blazers have shown him, then trade him.

A lot of money, and prayers he doesn't extend already this year
Then he would be a restricted free agent next season. Our chances to get Granger were better before the O’Neal trade, cause that would have locked up a lot of money and now they have an expiring deal for Rasho instead. They can give him six years, which we can’t. A front-loaded contract for about the maximum he could get or a really nice trade package might get it done anyway. Or so I hope.
For Prince, no free agency in sight, so we would need to make a similarly well stacked trade offer despite him being a few years older.
This article makes me want to trade Travis less, but there is no denying those guys would be upgrades.

The ingredient I think everyone is forgetting
Is Webster. He’s going to have many many open looks from 3 this year. He’s also going to have some good D behind him to clean up any defensive lapses.
He has the opportunity to really emerge this year.
If you think about his type of player- dead-eye shooter- those guys usually aren’t all that great at D or passing or rebounding. They may be adequate at one or all of them, but their main function is to punish the double team and leave your stars with one-on-one coverage.
Webster’s D and passing and rebounding are getting better, and could (conceivably) reach the adequate stage this year.
Or he may fail completely. Either way this a make-or-break year for Web, like last year was for Outlaw.

Not having spent much time in the south, this really gave me a feel for where Outlaw is coming from, both psychologically and geographically. Also, I like his candor.
I have no problem with him being honest about his desire for shots. A successful person should be greedy for the opportunity to exercise what they do well. Brandon has on severaral occaisons expressed his interest in seeing the offense run through him, which is appropriate since he is a great playmaker and leader. You know Oden will be greedy for lob dunks, rebounds and blocks. What Travis does well is score. He wants to have the opportunity to do what he does best. Hopefully, it will be here…maybe it will be elsewhere. He seems cool with that, and I think we all should be too.
When your primary skill is scoring and your team adds several new players who are scorers its only natural to speculate on how it will all turn out. We all have been. I like Travis better after reading this article.

That was nice perspective JMoon.
And I like him better after the article too.
I remember telling him how impressed I was with a player during summer league. In Avery's unique voice, he replied, "Marc, it's summer league." I

What we need is a Tayshaun Prince
-styled player. Here’s a SF who could hoist up shots and score 20 a game, but instead fits in with the team. He plays excellent defense and is reliable if the ball is passed to him.
What we do not need is a K*be or Carmelo Anthony.

If you did you job every day in a uniform
And there were other guys at other companies that could do their job in a t-shirt and shorts, got paid more, and had more freedom, wouldn’t you envy them or want their job?

I would
But I probably wouldn’t talk about it in my present company’s newsletter.

Yeah, I'm with you
I’d systematically murder all my coworkers and bosses instead. I’m just kidding. I don’t have a system.

Hey!
You can get a “System” On Line.
Just “Google” it.

I can feel the trade coming ;-)
Maybe not ideal, but hard to argue that we wouldn’t be set up for a first championship run with that roster.

Great human interest angle, but almost devoid of basketball news
Sigh. Right now the trickle of other Blazer news is too thin a reed to support the fans’ appetite, so this was manna from Heaven.
Trout has earned his place on this team and the public’s eye. While I don’t think the game he showed last season will be as well suited to the team next season, he will occupy the place he has earned until someone wrestles it from him or he is traded.

There's a difference between wanting and demanding
Settle down people. It’s a positive thing that Travis wants to have a major role on this team. I would expect every player to WANT that, and be working toward that. The problem is when players start expecting more than they’ve earned, or demanding more than the team can give them. There’s no reason to believe that will happen to Travis, and no reason to believe the ROY, LA, and Oden wouldn’t quash it if it did.

What a fun article
Unlike many people, I’m not the least bit worried about Travis wanting to take a lot of shots, wanting to start, etc. — there’s probably 400 guys in the NBA who’d say the same sort of stuff if they were being honest. In my book, if a guy DOESN’T have those kind of desires, he’s not NBA material.
I’ve really enjoyed the Oregonians in-depth look at players this summer, and their focus on the person rather than the athlete. The big news is that there are so many players on the team that are worth getting to know.

Thoughts
Mac knows how he is going to use Travis, and Travis knows it too. One thing to keep in mind is the fact that Mac seems to prefer to keep his players healthy by playing his starters around 30 minutes or even less, which we saw with Blake, Webster and Pryz last year. When Portland didn’t keep Jones, it became clear that they’d decided to give the time at SF solely to Travis and Webster. Travis may see a few less minutes this year, as in 26 to 22 or so, but he may still pick up some minutes at PF at times. Right now, we see Oden and Pryz taking the minutes at center, and Aldridge and Frye at PF. But, we may also see that Pryz’s lack of offense could, at times, cause Mac to shift Frye to center, and Outlaw to PF in some sets, just as Mac speculated a few days ago that he could see Roy moving to SF in some sets when Rudy is on the floor.
It’s still a fluid situation on the team. The more interchangeable the parts become, the more flexibility the coach has in exploiting the weaknesses of other teams.
As far as a couple of comments about KP’s decision to trade the 13 and Jack for Bayless – it was hardly a mugging. Those who harp on Bayless tend to ignore the fact that Rudy had more to do with trading Jack, than Bayless. Mac had decided that Blake and Roy performed better together in the starting unit than Roy and Jack. Jack, as a result, was playing the minutes as the third guard – but that forced him to be more of a combo guard at times, as Roy likes to deliver the ball in the 1/2 court, and Blake is primarily a PG. The Blazers already knew about Rudy, who is pimarily a shooting guard, and had to decide to bring him over or not. To do that, they had to give him playing time, and that time had to come from Jack, not from Blake or Roy. At that point, they had to decide whether or not Jack would be happy as a 4th guard with reduced playing time. Bayless can play his way into the NBA as the 4th guard for a while, and be satisfied doing that. Jack was not likely going to be happy as either a 4th guard or splitting his 26 minutes with Rudy. From where I sit, the trade worked well for the players as well as the Blazers. The Blazers cleared time for Rudy, Jack will get more minutes in Indiana than Portland, and Bayless is a better 4th guard for the Blazers who they can then take the time to develop. In the end, it wasn’t about Bayless – it was about Rudy. They had to have Jack’s 26 minutes.
TheBlazers either rolled the dice and brought Rudy over – or they didn’t. But they certainly weren’t going to persuade him to come over if he was going to have to compete for minutes as a backup with Jack – and only play 10 or 12 minutes as Sergio did last year. And you can bet Sergio’s situation was front and center in talks between the Blazers and Rudy – given the two players are friends.
So why don’t some of you wake up and look at reality. We moved Jack and replaced him with Rudy and Bayless, not just with Bayless. And the trigger was Rudy – not Bayless.

I was the one who called it a "mugging"
But I think you may have misunderstood me.
WE mugged THEM. We got rid of a player who we didn’t need (Jack), got a player with good upside if he’s healthy (Diagu), and exchanged a draft choice who went ahead of his position in most mock drafts for a player who fell in most mock drafts. And cleared roster space by sacrificing McBob up to the Hoosier gods.
Sounds like a mugging to me.
