Trailmix aka The Junk Drawer-9th
ahhh I don't have fun activities today, so I'll just post this filler, my college statement, a little theatrical no?
Dreams, dreams are the broad shoulders on which the wings of imagination lie. Unsure of what to pursue, I am unshakable in conviction.
While others have languished their greatest aspirations to the cudgels of reality, I shall never surrender my fortitude to normalcy. My greatest fear is to die in anonymity and social antipathy, an epitaph marked “beloved husband, father, and brother”. It’s not enough for me, for me to be normal. I want to be exceptional, I want to be a visionary, I want to bask in the applause of societies greatest circles, I want to part of the cream of my generation.
I believe greatness is a self-fulfilling prophecy, to consider yourself average is to be average. I want to be an inspirator, a leader, who channels his energies into uplifting the condition of the human imagination. I want the opus of my life to be a flame, a cinder that ignites the passion of man into a conflagration of venerability, eradicating injustice, and intolerable sense of averageness. I suppose it’s a bit myopic, but I want to be that ideal, to be great. I wish to imprint myself, as the individual, upon the skin of human permanence.
This ad is really cool

was over at
Canis Hoopus looking around trying to see what they thought of the scedual and of course found and old conversation whear our Mortimer made an apperance, and wouldn’t you know it, but they were happy about it. Ive been running to that a LOT. In a bulls thread about 4 or 5 or more BEdgers had showed up, and the argument had veriaty. and there was a few BoBers that wer UNhappy about our presence. eventually, one of the BoB regulars actually requested Mortimer be sent over, lol. true story. I,m going to start putting links to some of what im talking about in hear.
now, to what im talking about. If you look arround SBNation, we hear, have one of the largest participating fan bases. with how excitable we have been(and are) and how easy it is to go to other sites, good intentioned homerism, and inocent boasting, can quickly bring on flame wars. Ive allready read another Moderator of an SB site say that the term “Pritchslap” has been banned from his sight. WOW. Didn’t see that one comming, anywayz, seriously, laws and rules are children of nessessity, or greed. So unless there is a majore flaw in that logic, one might believe that that sight has seen more then its fair share of condecending uses of the term “Pritchslap”. And since that sites moderator is concerned with that sights fanbase, I can see how our beloved “Pritchslap” might be banned. THIS IS NOT ABOUT PRITCHSLAP! that was just an example of how our excitement can overflow, off the reservation, (couldnt think of an unoffensive version that encapsulated the idea even half as well) so to speak.
most of us dont act like jerks at other sites, but it happens, alot. remember this guy? look at how many sites he went to and how much he posted, remember how inflamatory he was, in all his forms? to most its probably not a big deal, but ive seen mortimer be THE leval headed influence on enough other sights, that when I think of this great comunity that I really enjoy, partly becouse of the thoughtfull ettiquette that is often rare, and how easy it could get bogged down with unnessary flame wars, and discord, I REALLY like the idea of having another version of Dave, so to speak, to patrol off sight to keep the peace. He really represents us well. it would be like putting our best foot forward.
I guess in a nut shell what im suggesting is emailing Dave with a simple “Mortimer for Blazers Edge Ambassador to the SBNations”. simple.
if anybody has a link to that moderators comment about the kp ban, pleas add. I think it was in one of our threads, but kant be sure. or any other instanses of peacekeeping behavior, please post link

Is Shaun Livingston worth the risk?
Clippers are rumored not wanting to bring him back at all, after already not giving him a qualifying offer (which would have been around $5 mill., too high in his insecure situation).
Some teams seem to be interested in him, e.g. the Cavaliers (cause they have Gibson in the backcourt who is small for his position). Should we be interested, too? He was a #4 pick, but after his horrible injury and not playing for the last season could probably be had for the price of a late first round pick a la Petteri or Sergio. He might not be ready to play for another six months, and in the worst case he has completely lost a step and will never make it back to play for a full season. But if he ever comes back to his former self, he is a very special talent. He is still young (23 in September), 6’7 is huge for a PG, and in his last full season he posted better numbers than Steve Blake in 30 minutes. Our doctors and trainers claim they have now collected a lot of experience in rehabilitation after knee injuries, and I guess they are up there with Phoenix and a few others as one of the best medical staffs in the league. A lot of teams who are in “win it now mode” or have owners who are afraid of taking on another million or so in salary/tax won’t take the risk – but we could afford it.
I think Shaun’s potential – if our doctors declare that the structural damage in his knee is acceptable – is higher than that of Petteri. If they don’t want to bring PK over and let him play in Europe for a few years, he might be a good option for the last spot. If it works out great, you just found a great backup point-forward, maybe even a replacement for Blake in a few years when his contract runs out. I could imagine him playing really well with Rudy as the backup unit. Imagine how big that backcourt would be. Yeah I know, not another PG project and player with an injury background. But the potential rewards are really great in this case.
Odenied: Coach, I promise I wasn't running hard ...
I should also add that he has been cleared to practice again, so he is on a similar level like Greg although his injury was worse of course
LA Times, June 16 2008: “After nearly a year and a half of rehabilitation, Clippers point guard Shaun Livingston has been medically cleared for basketball-related activities. Livingston, 22, has played two games of one-on-one this past week and his seriously injured left knee has improved to the point where is now dunking. The odds of him being cleared to play in the Las Vegas summer league, however, remain small. Livingston injured the knee Feb. 26, 2007, in a game against the Charlotte Bobcats. He missed the rest of that season and sat out the entire 2007-08 season. Livingston will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 if the Clippers do not offer him a salary starting at $5.8 million. The team is still waiting to see how he progresses before making the decision, but will probably attempt to resign him at a lesser price.”

Sorry buddy… our team is set until about the all star game. Also, we have our guards already. Bayless, Roy, Rudy. We don’t need a trade.

There is no trade, just money. Livingston is a UFA
Also I agree that Petko probably will sign in Europe if KP doesn’t sign him before training camp.

Oh no! Annie is going to stick her foot in it again.
I agree this is a good ad. It’s got some great snippets. I love McEnroe’s do, for instance, BUT I think this is the kind of visual equivalent of sound bites that contributes to and plays upon the increasingly short attention span of the average citizen that people are talking about in another thread. Of course, it’s always up to the individual watching something like this, no matter what the content, to be discerning. It helps to know that the point is to sell you something. Concept ads are the most dangerous, certainly, because whether it’s a product, an idea, a political position, it’s harder to understand that you’re being sold something.
"Besides, AnntheFan will be here any minute to #25 you." T Darkstar
Really Ann? I'm at work, they block all video, and I can't even watch the ad. I have no idea what it's for and I haven't even seen it. In fact it shows up as big empty space. My stomache is upset from swallowing all the crap you just posted.
Your're touching on larger political ideas that get me fired up.
You’re saying that corporations and their attempts to market their product are somehow “dangerous” with concept ads being “the most dangerous”. You’re not giving the “average citizen” (of which you manage to elevate yourself above) any credit or benefit of the doubt. From the comments I’ve read, it sounds like another enjoyable Nike ad. You’re politicizing it and giving it this “evil corporations with their dangerous advertising vs. the helpless, mindless, unable-to-think-for-themselves common man” bent that really irks me. Again, it sounds like another enjoyable Nike ad. Why do you have to turn it into something “dangerous” or negative?
I'll quote myself
“Of course, it’s always up to the individual watching something like this, no matter what the content, to be discerning.”
I’m sorry, I just got off a 12 hour shift at one of those “evil corporations” and I’m going to “chill” for awhile. Have a good morning. Talk to you later!
"Besides, AnntheFan will be here any minute to #25 you." T Darkstar
Well, in the least case, spending too much money on Nike's.
"Besides, AnntheFan will be here any minute to #25 you." T Darkstar
wouldn't Nike be out of business if they really charged too much for their shoes
It might be more than you’re willing to pay, but you can’t project that and assume it’s true then for every person. I am curious though, what really is the danger of this commercial. What is it that people need to be discerning of and careful for? Is the danger that you speak just that a consumer might willingly pay a mutually agreed upon price for a product or service?
I'm with Ann on this one
Noaher, Are you implying that corporations are not dangerous to us? Unchecked greed is destroying us.
I had thoughts in the same vane as Annthefan did. Though I’m a fan of most of the images I saw I’ll never watch that quick cutting bunch of mindless crap ever again. I’m tired of being bombarded. I’m tired of having such severe adult ADD. It’s a freak’n epidemic and I’ll bet you that tv advertising is at the for front of that. Enlighten me if you think me wrong.
And what the hell did the song mean? I’ve got soul but I’m not a soldier? This seems to imply that soldier’s have sole and most who are not soldiers don’t have sole but the singer does despite her non soldier status.
Like I said. I haven't even seen the ad, I don't get video at work.
What did any of this have to do with unchecked greed? The word “corporations” gets mentioned and immediately it’s synonymous with “unchecked greed” for you. I believe that a business has a right to make attempts to market and sell their product and that there is nothing dangerous about a TV commercial in and of itself. People have choice, choice in what they watch, what they purchase and consume, and a choice about how to spend their time. At least in America they do, and that’s what makes it a freaking great country. Some people choose to spend large chunks of free time watching TV and being bombarded with TV commercials. They choose to spend large chunks of time in a passive state, subjecting themselves to all sorts of images and dialogue that compell them to purchase and consume. They choose the way they want to live. My point is that, while people don’t always choose what might be best for them, people aren’t powerless, and people make decisions every single day that effect their lives in large and small ways.
If you’re tired of your severe adult ADD caused by TV advertising, have you considered the choices you need to make to help affect a change in that? You only have yourself to blame for your sever adult ADD caused by advertising. If your so sick of TV advertising, choose not to consume it. People in the US people have a choice about nearly everything. How they choose to spend their time, what they choose to buy, and what they choose not to buy is a very powerful demonstration of their power of choice.
To get angry at a company, with knee jerk reactions like “unchecked greed!” anytime you hear the word “corporation” isn’t very productive. Why blame a company for attempting to sell as much of their good or sevice as possible? Without demand for their good or service they wouldn’t sell anything and would cease to exist. It’s the people that make these companies possible. Have you stopped to think about how just about every “thing” that you have comes from a company out to make a profit (gasp).
People. You. Me. We’re not helpless. We’re the one’s with the power. It’s not those greedy corporation’s fault that people have adult ADD, or that they are fat and lazy, or spend $150 on Air Jordans. People choose that for themselves, and the corporations are their to meet the demands of you and I, the consumers.
Corporations are not dangerous to us. We are dangerous to ourselves.

Okay, I'm awake again.
Noaher, my comment, in this instance, wasn’t a diatribe against corporations or sales. I was trying to point out that the staccato pace of the ad, in my opinion, is a prime example of pandering to, promoting and taking advantage of short attention spans. The content could have been political, a movie like The Bourne Identity 3 or anything else you care to substitute for tennis shoes. Sure, you can pack a lot of content into a short time, but how much information do you really absorb? Not much, but when well done the intent of the message gets across to the target audience and they’ll vote or buy or watch or have their opinion influenced or whatever. To me this stuff not only contributes to short attention spans, it smacks of subliminal advertising, but that’s a subject for another time.
"Besides, AnntheFan will be here any minute to #25 you." T Darkstar
OK, this is OT even for a junk drawer
Ann, you think the Navajo RUGS are dangerous—don’t even GLANCE at the jewelry. I’m not a jewelry person, but the silver work is amazing. No subliminal advertising needed.
I know. I've seen the jewelry. Beautiful
I’ve always been fascinated by string and the things you can do with it. First you gather the material to make string, prepare it for spinning, and then make it into string. Then you make the string into blankets, rugs, clothing. It’s wonderful. What I have to avert my eyes from is the pottery, especially Acoma pottery

however, that doesn’t my statements any less true. As advertising, it’s great.
"Besides, AnntheFan will be here any minute to #25 you." T Darkstar
to me,
I just hate the marketing trend that Nike started years ago and continues now. Everyone uses it:
Take platitude(s), add inspiring photos or film, pretend that shoes/Kaiser/anything else is really deep. Yes, perhaps sports do have meaning, but Nike’s just in it to sell the shoes.
Really? Nike's in it to just sell shoes? You mean a company is only advertising in an attempt to sell their product? How disappointing and shameful!
that's not my point
Of course they’re in it to sell shoes, but they ACT like they’re in it because they in it for some kind of higher purpose.
I get what you're saying. I do.

Kobe, and why he’s more popular in China than Yao Ming.
Style and scoring ability.
This is why Kobe Bryant is the greatest sports icon in China; not Yao Ming, not Yi Jianlian, not even groundbreaking hurdle-champion Liu Xiang.

That’s too bad. Personally, I think Yao is a really great player and a better teammate and leader than Kobe. And people are crazy to think that Kobe isn’t naturally gifted, even if it’s an assumption based on his height. Although Yao is taller, there have been plenty of tall stiffs.

You could argue Smith's value is higher than that
But, Memphis (wtf) was smart enough to not overpay for a guy who has a combustible attitude, has gotten into a fight with a teammate, and openly hates his coach. A little less than 12 million a year annually is pretty fair when you take all of that into account, but methinks a summer with more teams under the cap would have netted him a bigger deal.

Yeah, don't really understand why he didn't take the qualifying offer from ATL
Maybe he likes to have the security, but next years a lot of teams would have offered him more than $11.6 per year and he could have chosen if he wants to stay with the Hawks or look elsewhere.
Deng declined his offer from Chicago last year, played worth and still got offered the same (which he then took, but Chicago is a more solid team to be with for the next five years as it stands now).

Kobe: Of course.
Q. Where—In Italy?

Kobe: Undoubtedly. $40 million dollars a year—and I’m there. [I don’t quite get the last sentence, something like “There’s nothing insurmountable.”]

"Nothing's impossible." -- That's a better phrasing.
Not quite certain, pretty sure that’s right.
"He shoots....................... he scores!!!"
"Nothing is simpler" is a closer translation to what the Russian Kobe said
The better question is what did Kobe actually say in English? As we are dealing with something that was said in English, translated into Russian and then translated back into English, there is the possibility of something being lost in one of the translations.
