Oden Practices

Credit to dsx460 who posted this in the sidebar.  I deleted his fanpost since it was brand new and only 10 minutes before I was duplicating it here for main page discussion...so to keep the conversation in one place.

Jason Quick has a report on Oden's full-contact workout

Jason always writes for the story element but I would caution that his introductory sentence explaining that Oden's rehabilitation is "officially over" doesn't mean that Oden's recovery is over.  He's not hooked up to knee machines anymore but that doesn't mean he's all the way back.  I say this not to be a downer but because it would be easy to mistake those two "r" words.

I saw Oden up close (e.g. less than 10 feet) at the last Blazers/Sonics game last spring

My brother-in-law was a Sonics season ticket holder and had MVP seating right next to the Blazers’ bench and I was lucky enough to get to go to this game. Frye and Aldridge both looked big, but at halftime when G.O. stood up I was dumbfounded. Huge doesn’t even begin to describe him. He’s just shy of a force of nature.

I went to the last home game of the year against Memphis...

and sat in the same section as Paul Allen and KP. We had to go through the blazers tunnel to get to the bathrooms and buy more beer. As I was going between the 3rd and 4th quarter, I saw Holton and stopped to say hi and that I enjoyed his work(I was a little tipsy and in a VERY good mood). As I was turning around to head down the tunnel, I nearly ran straight into Odens chest, I am 5’10 and was barely at nipple height. I picked my jaw up off the floor long enough to evade his path, which took me about 5 lateral steps to the left to make room for him. I saw Mo Luc and LMA from point blank range earlier, and my thoughts were “those are two tall guys” , when I saw Oden at point blank, my thoughts were, “RUN!! KING KONG IS IN THE BUILDING, HE WILL EAT ALL OF US AND STILL BE HUNGRY!!! oh wait, thats Mr Oden!!!”. I squeaked out an “Oden” along with a fist pump and he looked at me like, “who let this little mouse in the building, should I step on him to keep him from nesting up somewhere?? Nah, these are my nice shoes, I am going to go watch the rest of the game now”. You really can’t understand just how big he is until you are face to face with him…..

I also have a great Travis Outlaw anecdote from that game, but I can’t remember if I shared it yet or not. I will probably do so anyway when I get time later today….

For you Ann, I would love to, but it might be a little lengthy...

This is definitely one of my top 3 blazer memories of all time, so I was shocked when I tried to find where I had previously written about it, and found nothing. It was that same game against Memphis, which was the last home game of this last season. My buddy’s mom scored courtside seats from her work and we were about 4 rows from the court, right behind PA, KP and company. That was also the same corner of the court as the blazers bench. One of my buddies had become fairly inebriated and was getting quite vocal towards Outlaw. As snappy and snark as I come across on this blog at times, I am actually quite shy in person and not really the type to try and get players attention during games(although I am rarely if ever close enough to do so). But luckily for me, my friend is that way and during an early timeout, he started screaming “Outlaw! Outlaw! Dunk it! We want a huge Dunk!’ and so on. Outlaw looked at us with a slightly confused look and Joel immediately came over to Outlaw and you could tell he was saying something along the lines of “don’t listen to those schmucks, concentrate on the game”. He listened to Joel and ignored us the rest of the half.

At halftime, during warmups, my friend started right back up with the same stuff, and although Outlaw never acknowledged us directly, we knew he got our message. At one point he stood at the side of the paint and cocked the ball behind him and stared at the rim like he was visualizing how nasty of a dunk he was going to pull off for us. My friend yelled “Ya, like that, dunk it”, and Outlaw chuckled a little. My loud friend actually isn’t much of a basketball guy, this was really his first year as a blazer and nba fan, and that was mostly because we were roommates and I am a nut, so he had little choice. He then started yelling “Its dunk time Outlaw, its dunk time!!” My other friend and I kind of chuckled at how silly it sounded, but we were having too much fun to be embarrassed.

The second half flew by, I almost got to experience what an Oden pick would feel like in between the 3rd and 4th quarters, and before we knew it, there wasn’t a lot of time left in the 4th and we had a healthy lead. With about 4-5 minutes left in the game, my friend started yelling “Nate!!! Put Outlaw in!!! Its dunk time Nate!!!! Put in Outlaw!!!”. With about 3 minutes left, Nate did exactly that(from no influence of my friend mind you), and as Outlaw hopped off the bench, he flashed us a little smile and jogged up to check in. My friend continued to scream ‘Its dunk time Outlaw”, when ever he thought Trout might be able to hear him. Two minutes later, we witnessed this not fifteen feet in front us.

After the first alley oop, we flipped, but when he threw down the second one, I nearly had a heart attack. As he landed after the second dunk, he looked right at us for a split second as if to say “Was that good enough for you???” It was, it really, really was. The row in front of us had been stoic most of the game, but after that second dunk, they all jumped up and turned around and started slapping us high fives.

Right after the horn blew and the confetti dropped, Outlaw walked towards us from half court and pointed at us with a huge southern smile on his face. Martell then walked up to Outlaw and we later figured out how that conversation probably went:

Web: Who are you pointing at?
Trout: That guy and his friends have been shouting its dunk time at me the whole game.
Web: What a bunch of dorks!

Martell turned towards us and they both chuckled about whatever they actually said to each other.

Its ok though, even if they did think we were dorks, it was still awesome. He stuck around and threw his shoes into the crowd and as he ran by us into the tunnel, he stared right at us, maintained that huge lovable smile, and gave us a fist pump as he disappeared towards the locker room. It was pretty dang sweet, and I get goosebumps every time I watch that highlight….

Nice story

Too bad the YouTube is so blurred. You can see he is looking in the general direction of the bench and the fans, but not exactly at whom.

I cant be certain where Travis was looking at that exact instance after the second dunk...

But my 3 friends and I all agreed that he seemed to flash us an “OH YEA” type of look, but it could have easily been at the bench or at nobody in particular. The rest I am 110% sure he was acknowledging us. One point of clarification though, after the game, Outlaw probably was walking towards the bench and not us, but I am 1000% certain the finger point and big smile was directed right at us. I could jabber on about this all day, so I will just leave it at that….

So, it's your friend's mom we have to thank for that memory. We should buy you guys

season tickets 4 rows up behind the Blazer’s bench (so that you can see and be seen over the tops of the standing bench player’s heads) if that’s the results you get. Thanks for sharing that story, it’s a great memory.

I am down with that...

I wouldn’t mind free season tickets;) But the credit should obviously go to #25 and Sergio for the amazing set up and finish x2, it would have happened had my friend “heckled” Outlaw or not. It was cool to see how he reacted to us, it was almost like he had never had a consistent cheering section pumping him up. He seemed bashful and flattered every time he showed any reaction to my friends yelling, I don’t think he has an arrogant bone in his body. It was the perfect cap to an amazing season and I am so dang lucky I got to sit where I did when it happened. It is definitely a memory I wont be forgetting anytime soon….

What's the over and under on fanposts on that subject?

My guess is 1.73

My guess on why Quick brought it up so much is because he didn’t really report much. Oden’s not used to running, he strong, and he worked out. That’s not much to cover when he has to fill peoples insatiable need for Oden information.

CHANNING!

Who shows up for this workout? Voluntarily, at this time of year.

Who is in CONDITION?

Could Channing push LMA for minutes? Probably not, but who knows? That is one guy who wants to be around when they are measuring for rings.

I was

pretty excited about this too. Even though he’ll play fewer minutes and is a role guy, its nice to hear when ANY player decides to work a little harder.

by MavetheGreat on Aug 5, 2008 8:47 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It's those role guys

that are always there putting in the overtime. What should LMA risk getting hurt banging around the court with Greg two months before training camp? I know they aren’t going full speed or anything, but still. Aldridge’s starting spot is all locked up for the most part. I’m not saying Aldridge should be totally away from basketball, getting out of shape, or anything like that, but you’ll notice Brandon isn’t in town either. A couple or few more weeks and Brandon will have almost everyone back in Portland scrimmaging and getting in shape. For now Greg will get worked back into shape by Channing or maybe Ike Diogu.

by MattyDread on Aug 5, 2008 9:30 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Channing was not in condition at training camp last year

He is working hard this year.

This guy is talented, if he puts in the hard work to go with it he could push for more minutes, by LMA getting more rest, stealing a few minutes from Joel as an offensive threat, or even, if he really is knocking down 3s, as part of a big lineup for a few minutes here and there as SF.

We really have an amazing amount of talent. We could make a quantity for quality trade, and still be really, really deep.

Oh, I'm not doubting that he's working hard

I like Channing.
I just don’t think he would have flown in from out of town for this practice, just as no one else did.

by Section323 on Aug 5, 2008 1:29 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If they didn't fly in

Then they don’t really want to be Blazers.

KP wasn’t there either they say, so he doesn’t have what it takes to be a great GM. Good GM, sure, but not GREAT.

This is worse than Oden not watching crappy ass summer league games while in school!

But is anyone talking about this? Of course not. There is a complete media blackout about Oden-Workout-KP-and-Others-Not-Being-There-GATE that Dave and Ben are fully supporting and I am SICK OF IT.

Nuggets

All things being said – there were some nuggets. First, Oden believes his offence is 50
% better for hooks and jump shots – because he’s worked on it for the last year. Secondly, the trainers and coaches believe he is one of the most powerful players at his position in the league. Third, he has the quickness of a SF and the lateral movement of a PF.

He’s a special talent. That much they firmly believe – and as he practices and gets into game shape, this will come up over and over again.

“While working as an assistant with the U.S. Olympic team, McMillan has worked closely with Orlando’s All-Star center, Dwight Howard. Jensen said McMillan told him that Oden is more powerful than Howard. And McMillan last month said he thinks Oden is more powerful than Shawn Kemp was at age 20.”

Now that he's back on the the court, I'll be holding my breath all the

while, thinking about the knees. Greg being out of shape, is very understandable considering his situation. But it bothers me a little that he was also out of shape when he worked out for the Blazers prior to the draft. I hope stamina isn’t an issue. For that reason, and for his knees, I’m hoping that he drops 10 or 15 lbs quickly. He evidently will have an abundance of strength no matter what weight he plays at.

The outward lack of fire and enthusiasm is a concern that’s been discussed all along. It’s just in his make up I suppose. Hopefully the flame is burning hot internally though. Time will tell. He’s such an imposing athlete.

I can’t believe how nervous I am about everything turning out all right for him (and for we Blazer fans). I’m not superstitious, but I think I’ll cross my fingers anyway.

Great report by JQuick.

I hope he never averages over 35

Fewer minutes = fewer injuries = longer career.

Pryz on the bench = fewer minutes.

Blazer dominance and blowouts = fewer minutes.

Keep those minutes down, and stay fresh and healthy for the playoffs. It would be a shame to waste our depth. We don’t need to win 75 in the regular season to win a championship.

Remember the tonsils

GO had stamina issues in summer league last year, which were attributed to him not being able to get enough oxygen because of his tonsils, which were then removed.

We need to not worry about GO’s stamina unless it is a problem in November. Yes, three months is plenty of time to get into NBA shape normally, but GO will see limited action in the next few weeks as they slowly bring his knee along, so it may take him longer to get enough full-court, five-on-five action to get into NBA shape.

GO weighs in the neighborhood of 290 pounds. I don’t care how strong you are, that’s a lot of mass to move. He will tire more easily and his stamina will improve more slowly than if he weighed less.

Asked his specialty in the kitchen, Oden paused and said, "Hamburger Helper and tuna fish."

by MiledAnimal on Aug 5, 2008 10:57 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The question is will Nate and Dean

bring Oden along slowly. They pushed Miles hard when he tried to return from knee surgery.

Hopefully they will not push Oden to the point his knee pain flares up. Surely all the coaches learned from that experience. My worry is from some some comments that suggest that it takes 2 years to return completely from the surgery Oden had.

This is why

there was a small, but vocal, minority clamoring for the Blazers to draft Durant.

While Oden was reportedly saying that his dream was to be a dentist, you’d read stories about Durant spending eight hours a day in the gym, driven by the desire to be the greatest basketball player ever. Pritchard recognized this, once referring to him as an “assassin.”

In the end, of course, the Blazers decided Oden’s once-in-a-generation physical gifts were tougher to pass up than a stringbean with the heart of a warrior. It’s certainly tough to fault them for that decision. However, until we see otherwise, questions about Oden’s desire will persist. And those questions will be further fueled by observations such as the one made by Quick that “Oden sometimes appeared like he was off in his own world, disinterested in the jack-hammer instructions coming from Demopoulos.”

Don't you think

it’s probably because he has been so gifted that he never has had to work hard? He’s never had to be in perfect shape because he could dominate without it. Perhaps his knee – and other problems we’ve seen – are because he never has trained properly (until entering rehab.)

He has that laid-back personality that show he’s not a Type A. He’s going to do as much as necessary to be good, but beyond that I think the motivation will have to come from outside. (I don’t want to compare him to D.Miles, but if the natural talent is not accompanied by a dedicated mind-set…) What is the saying – Hard work beats talent if talent doesn’t work hard?

Hard to stoke the competitive fire without competition. When he steps onto an NBA court and feels the speed and power of the game, he won’t want to be embarassed.

A lot of NBA players have this thing about being dissed. No one’s ever really dissed Greg. He’s been the chosen one since middle school and was taken #1 in the draft. In a lot of ways, it’s easier to be the underdog in life.

The "Explosiveness" Comment

Keep in mind that this comment comes from Tom Penn – assistant general manager, not “doctor,” not “scout” – the man is a lawyer and a businessman endorsing a product called the Portland Trailblazers. I’m guessing he’s watched no more basketball than my father, who is also a lawyer, a basketball referee, and quite a few years older than Mr. Penn. Yet if my dad said Oden was “less explosive,” we would ignore him just as we should Mr. Penn and his front-office colleagues.

The only person qualified to comment on Oden’s explosiveness is Greg Oden himself. His comments in the video are revealing enough. And whether he’s more or less explosive is irrelevant. Years ago the Blazers had the mighty Sabonis, who was not as much explosive as he was hopelessly earthbound, and still, by at least one statistical measure, he was among the ten most effective centers in the league.

His explosiveness is irrelevant?

If Sabos could jump, don’t you think those stats of his would be a little better. Ever see video of Sabonis when he could jump. There’s no comparison to the Sabonis we saw in portland. Explosiveness is HUGE.

Oden’s explosiveness is one his key features. It’s a big reason that he’s so good. He’s a jumper, a giant big jumper.

If Oden’s the only credible source for this info, then we’re prettty well screwed in ever finding out what’s happening. That contract he’s looking at in a few years would be a good reason to say, “hey I’m super explosive.”

Why does Dave want to bring everybody down...

(to Earth)? I had this joke towards the end of last season, when we were mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, it was something like: “for us ultra-optimists mathematical elimination comes at quite a blow.” The funny part about it is that it was only half a joke. Everybody knew that we weren’t making the post season a long time ago, but I still had that hope, and checked all those other teams ahead of us daily to see if they were sliding. I realize that I set myself up for disappointment that way, but it’s all I know. So here goes. Oden is going dominate right for the get-go! He’s enormous! Look at him dwarf Frye! I’ve been watching Dwight Howard in the Olympics warm up games, and his legs look like toothpicks compared to Greg’s tree trunks. He’s going to be a force to be reckoned with and I think he will be in the discussion for Rookie of the Year. I can’t wait for the first time he send KG or Flobe or Gasoft flying with a hard foul.

Seems like a common look

Lebron, Kidd, Outlaw, ummmm more I’m sure, all favor the long sleeves when practicing look. I assume it keeps their arms looser and more ooey gooey so they feel like they move better after the stoppages in drills and what not.

Watching the clips of Team USA practice, there are more than a few superstars who do the same thing.

Woof

by Charles Barkley McLovin on Aug 5, 2008 2:01 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

For weight lifters

That makes sense for before a show, because they get their skin literally paper thin by losing all of their water, but for a REAL athlete, being properly hydrated is very important and just losing sweat doesn’t lose you real weight, just water weight.

Weight lifters/Body builders are the least healthy people I have ever met. A while back some work involved some body builders and I learned more than I ever wanted to know about the ‘sport’. It is ridiculously unhealthy.

You sweat everything out, don’t drink ANY water, get that water out of your skin and the muscles show through all the better. For a NBA guy, this doesn’t help anything at all and as soon as Oden takes a drink of water the weight he lost comes back on. It’s an old method for weight loss (like running wearing a garbage sack to sweat more) that is only temporary.

Of course, keeping your muscles warm and loose is more than enough reason to play in long sleeves.

Yeah, making weight

That’s what I sorta mean too. Sweating out more only helps for those situations, which don’t help for basketball.

I remember wrestlers I knew spitting all day to lose more water weight, being scared of drinking anything for fear of not making weight. It’s horrible.

Any weight Oden loses will be done the right way, and water weight means nothing unless you’re trying to get under a specific number.

That’s all I mean, with what I’m addin’.

I couldn’t imagine not drinking when I wanna. I ALWAYS gotta have a drink nearby. I keep it real, drink wise.

Or just clone 70’s era Mo Lucas.

Tractor Taylor might have the necessary girth to handle Oden… hmm…

Since most bigs won’t be able to beast Oden anyways, maybe it’s better to let him get used to being such a beast and to OWN IT, instead of overdoing it with a fellow banger in practice and then going overboard in games against Kevin Love or something.

I hope he doesn't

Because than Oden stops being a dominant NBA center and becomes a sassy chubby black woman.

Or at least a guy dressed up as a sassy black woman, which I guess is hilarious.

It’s where British comedy and American Black comedies find common ground!

I don't think you're really sold yet Dave

On Oden. I mean not even 50% sold. It’s almost as if the micro surgery just completely freaked you out and ever since it’s been Olowakandi-land for you as far as Greg’s concerned.

I don’t think it’s necessary to notify thousands of Blazer fans that Oden isn’t 100% back yet. It’s not like we’re seven year olds freaking out at 6 am waiting to go to Disneyland and don’t understand the fact that Disneyland doesn’t open until 9. Do you know what I mean? We’re all adults. We know what’s up.

Oden retires McMiIllan

in the othe part of Quick’s blog on Oden:
http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindblazersbeat/2008/08/how_greg_oden_made_nate_mcmill.html

I love how Oden fights bcak to being jabbed. We are not going ot be soft in th emiddle next year. ODen is going to crush his competition. And the L@kers will be the first to feel Oden's wrath. Watch your back Lamar.

Sorry about that, a reprint

I love how Oden fights back to being jabbed by Nate leaving Nate with back spasms. We are not going to be soft in the middle next year. Oden is going to crush his competition. And the L@kers will be the first to feel Oden’s wrath. Watch your back Lamar.

I mean, I know he’s tough, but to leave Channing in a wheelchair?

I like it

Wish I were there. His “disinterest” does concern me since all you hear about the greatest players of all time is that they were 100% go in practice and on game day and Greg doesn’t seem to be built like that.

Just when I thought I'd heard that for the last time

That soundbyte of A.I. still makes me sick to this day. I wonder how many young kids heard this and decided they, too, are naturals at the game and need not to practice to make themselves better.

Steve Aschburner liked the picture of Oden stuffing Frye. Said it

”..., in time, might rival that grainy 1967 alleged photograph of Big Foot striding through the forest, in the subcategory of frightening man-beast candids from the Pacific Northwest.”

“In the background, Demopoulos appears to look like he’s just seen a real Sasquatch.

Get used to that expression, too, as Oden continues his comeback. What was meant to happen a year ago now appears to be more on track than ever, a rebuilt and restocked team that faded last season boasting both experience and youth, centered on an undisputed once-in-an-NBA-generation big man.”

Oden & Walton/Bowie

I can understand that fans who watched the Walton/Bowie meltdowns have an underlying fear of falling too deeply for Oden, and then being again disappointed. It’s a tough thing to happen.

The season after the championship, the Blazers were a machine, going 50 & 4. Then Walton got hurt. It was like having a blowout on the freeway.

Oden, healthy, from where I sit, will be the hands down ROY winner, simply because he will have so much more impact from the center position than players like Rose or Brewer can have at the guard/forward spots.

What the Blazers need from Oden is not necessarily offense, it’s defense and rebounding, because that’s what wins championships. And from the center spot it wins because it not only disrupts the other teams play, but reduces the number of chances the opponent has to score. Russell proved this, and when Chamberlain stopped trying to score 100 pts a game, he got his ring. The reason the center doesn’t need to have any shot other than the dunk, the put back, and the right/left hook at 10’ or so around the basked, and the short jumper, is that the other players on his team typically have shooting %’s that are the same as or close to his own. If they get more chances, they’ll simply score more points.

Now, consider that Al Horford of Atlanta averaged 10.4 rpg and 12 ppg in his first year, yet Oden, a freshman at the time, owned him a year earlier in the championship, even though he had help from 6’11” Noah. That indicator alone would tell us that Oden will have better numbers than Horford his first year.

Every block, every disrupted play, ever extra defense and offense rebound, makes all the Blazers better. And the other team worse.

And Oden will almost certainly play better defense his first year, than offense, simply because he already has many of the requisites to play defense. He’s quick, has good lateral movement, 7’ w long arms, and powerful. Never underestimate power. If most or all other centers cannot move him out of his position, he’ll get extra rebounds, blocks and points just because of that fact alone. Further, he’ll be able to screen the center off and open up lanes for his team-mates. Scoring will come. The idea, of course, of an Oden shooting jump shots almost turns me off, because you want him owning the space under the basket – not rotating out to take shots – of all things. Defensively, after all, if the opposing center tries to draw him out, then the PF would likely rotate toward the basket, meaning Aldridge can switch off. And if both Aldridge’s man and the opposing center are trying to play from outside the basket – then you know they’re already defeated. Which suits me just fine. Because they’ll be one shot and out.

At the end of the day, it’s nice to have a firey player like Bayless, and a kid like Fernandez, but Oden is the one that will bring the rings home.

DUNKS & PUTBACKS

GO will score 10ppg by accident. Do you remember
the last couple of season when Joel or Smooth would get
a pass rolling towards the hoop with one man to beat ?
Usually they would get fouled or try to finesse the ball in
the bucket. All of that is OVER ! If GO gets the ball rolling
to the hoop/ or on the break, it’s getting dunked HARD and
in someone’s face. DUNKS, DUNKS & more DUNKS !
THROW IT DOWN BIG MAN !!!

It's GO time !
