Blazer love from a L*kers site
I was looking for the 08-09 schedule and stumbled across this. Not sure if the post was from an actual Laker fan or not but this is a Laker fan site. Either way, it's nice to know the world is watching what we're doing here in Portland! Look for the post on the 22nd, it should be at the top. I LOVE it when he says:
"Hate to be a pessimist but I was looking at Blazers line-up next year and its a little scary"

The L@ker fans at that site fall into two camps
The “The Blazers are scary” camp and the “Show me, we’ll see” camp. I love the rising stink of fear in L@kerland…
More comments about the Blazers at another post on that site.
Asked his specialty in the kitchen, Oden paused and said, "Hamburger Helper and tuna fish."
I love this line from their site:
I really wonder how Pritchard does it, maybe something like this:Portland/Indiana Trade:
Bird: Hello?
Pritchard: Hey hows it going Larry it’s Kevin, I thought that you would possibly be interested in a trade.
Bird: Sure, what did you have in mind?
Pritchard: Well i was thinking Jarrett Jack, McRoberts and the rights to Brandon Rush for the rights to Jerryd Bayless.
Bird: Not interested in that deal, we are really high on Bayless, but thanks for the offer anyways Kevin.
Pritchard: Does it change your mind that I have your wife and kids tied up in my office?
Bird: Very funny, Kevin…..
Larry’s wife Dinah, and kids Connor and Mariah are heard screaming
Pritchard: Larry, I dont play games on draft night.
Larry: Ok just dont hurt my family, I agree to the deal! I’ll even give you Ike Diogu.
Pritchard: Nice doing buisness with you Larry.

Bird: Not interested in that deal, we are really high on Bayless, but thanks for the offer anyways Kevin.
K.P.: Bayless is not the guard you are looking for.
Bird: (in monotone voice) Bayless is not the guard I am looking for.
K.P.: You really want Jarrett Jack and Brandon Rush.
Bird: (monotone) I really want Jack and Rush.
K.P. Thanks, Larry!
Bird: (somewhat dazedly) But…but the contracts don’t match up.
K.P. I’ll throw in McRoberts, too. Did you like ‘Superbad, Larry?’
Bird: (confused now) Yeah.
K.P. Did I tell you his nickname is “McLovin’”?
Bird: Really, cool! We’ll take him.
K.P. Bye, Larry!
Bird: Bye, Kevin.

They still don't really see Roy as a great player.
Which to me is funny because first off they think Roy is older than he is, and second if they compared Roy’s 2nd year numbers to Kobe’s third year numbers (they played almost the same amount of minutes) they would see the the differences between the two are mostly not even single digit, with Roy beating out Kobe in some aspects. Sure Kobe was younger but he had more time in the NBA at that point. They talk about Roy like he’s 30 and been in the league for 7 years.
Other than that they seem pretty level headed at that site for fans of ‘that team’
I like this quote.
“I agree, but they are too young to be anything close to a contender. IMO the next 3-5 Years will be remembered as Kobe’s years (3 titles, 1 more MVP, 2 Finals MVP, DPOY, Olympic Gold, etc). “
There’s some homerisum for ya.
My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

Thoughts on Roy
I know he came into the league as a senior out of college, but to say he has hit his celing already is a little over the top don’t you think?
Not really
I mean you can just tell Roy is going to decline over the next few years. It’s written all over him. But Andrew Bynum…now THERE’S a guy who’s going to have a Hall-of-Fame career. I mean, did you see his stats for those three weeks?!? Seriously, he’s the difference in leading the L*kers to the Promised Land. And he’s not at all injury-prone…unlike Greg Oden in Portland.

you gotta admit
Bynum was putting up some incredibly efficient numbers. His PER was in the top 12 in the league.
Boomshakalaka
The key sentence is "for those three weeks"
If we look at isolated performances over relatively short stretches, our #1 target this summer should have been a trade for Ramon Sessions and not for Jerry Bayless. Hey, he might be the next Chris Paul or Steve Nash. But why did nobody see that in the draft?
Odenied: Coach, I promise I wasn't running hard ...
Sessions case is different
But if healthy, there is nothing to suggest Bynum won’t be the same good player he was before.
Sessions mostly benefited from hot gunners and low end-of-season competition. He played well, but it’s not the same as the big minutes and real games Bynum was playing in, and doing well in.
Like I’ve been saying, if healthy, Bynum will be pretty good. I don’t think he’ll be as good as Oden (eventually not even close), but I think Bynum will be a rich man’s Chandler and a VERY good rival for Oden for their careers.
Mortimer
A little off subject.
But I seem to remember Rex Grossmen putting up amazing numbers for a couple of weeks but then he couldn’t keep it together for a whole season.

How good we are basically comes down to
How good Greg Oden is, if he’s a dominant center, we win championships.
Secondly, it’s hard to say if a player has hit his ceiling when he is only 23. Basketball is a game of skill, how proficient you are at those skills combined with your athletic ability determines how effective of a player you are. I’d say that with how skilled Roy is, with his high basketball IQ, work ethic, and court vision, combined with his underrated athletic ability he has pretty good potential. He’s such a smooth player than doesn’t seem to overexert himself, so it seems like “this is as good as he is going to be”, that might not be true.
After all people pegged his ceiling lower than what it is right now. Averaging 20/6/5 a game so consistently by a second year player is an impressive accomplishment. i
If you had a young (23yr old) unnamed player, who
has a 40inch vertical
scored 20 a game,
showed signs of being a 6’6” point guard,
became a lock down defensive player during key possessions (see The Streak, Joe Johnson, Carmelo Anthony)
acted as THE leader of his team
I’m sure many people would go “wow this guy might be a superstar in a few years”
I think a lot of people say that Roy has no upside because of the 2006 draft and the repeated pundit statement “he’s an NBA ready player, he’s not going to get much better”.
The numbers probably won’t prove it, but I’d bet the Roy of 2010 is a much better player than the Roy of 2008. His game is so focused on the team aspect of basketball, he doesn’t have 35, 40,50 pt games, that doesn’t mean he isn’t an amazing basketball talent. If he improves his 3pt shooting and his FT shooting, he will be one of the most complete and balanced NBA shooting guards.
I’d say OJ Mayo’s ceiling is Brandon Roy. Upside and potential are usually thrown around to the point that they are more based on perception and hype than actual basketball skill.

I dont think OJ ’s ceiling is BRoy’s. Especially b/c I dont know if Roy’s ceiling is even determinable , well based on your definition. Anyway, mostly all the way correct just dont know how OJ may is relevant except to show the hype surrounding a player.

Oden way better than Bynum
But Bynum was good when he was healthy, and anyone can steal a dunk or two over even the best players in the world SOMETIME.
Of course, if Bynum steadily outplayed Oden for a few games, or a career, then I’d be surprised. If anything Bynum was proof that a big, athletic, huge big man with no offense can really make an impact by just being bigger and huger than any of the stiffs who play center today.
Plus having Kobe distract the defense and living off of gimme-dunks and garbage buckets helps too.
If Bynum can do that, Oden can do that at LEAST. For guys that big and athletic (and Oden is more so in both regards), 13/10/2 comes just by stepping on the court.
Mortimer
I can't let you get away...
... with saying Bynum has no offense. He’s got very good hands, is great on lob passes and has pretty good touch from in close. He has to prove he can do it for a full season, but he was playing at an allstar level before he went down.
Boomshakalaka
But I got away with it--
—and more! MUAHAHAHAHA.
Bynum was a dunker, he didn’t have a good touch as far as I could see, but he didn’t need one. His points were off of putbacks, lobs, and gimmes… similar to Chandler, and I would also say Chandler has ‘no offense’ to speak of.
BUT, he still gets points by being taller and more athletic than anyone else, and having a playmaker who can put him in easy spots to score.
Bynum does have good hands, which is a big part he can take advantage of his size and the focus a Kobe or Paul gets on offense. This is a big reason Joel can’t do what Bynum does, aside from Joel’s lack of big ups anymore. I watched my fair share of Laker games, and Bynum doesn’t exactly have a soft touch.
He could certainly develop it and for a young big man he was very good, so I don’t think I’m belittling how he played last season. He was great and looked to only improve. If he finally comes back from his injury healthy, he’ll bolster a frontline that desperately needed someone big and athletic to help out Gasol and Odom.
BUT, his offense wasn’t as good as what Oden showed in college and summer league, and Oden appears to have that soft touch that still eludes Dwight Howard and seemed to not be in Bynum’s arsenal yet.
I don’t think I’m out of line in saying Bynum has a limited offensive game, or ‘no offense’, on his own. Not to take away from what he and Chandler do of course, because not everyone is big/athletic enough to score how they do. But, it isn’t necessarily skill that would translate to every situation. You put LMA on a team, and he can score without a lot of help. I figure Oden will be the same soon enough.
You put Bynum or Chandler on a team without a playmaker to draw the focus of the defense, and they aren’t put in a position to score because they can’t do it on their own.

Interesting
that almost all of their posters, believe that if the portland players all become as good as everyone thinks they can, that Portland won’t be able to afford to keep all of them. Maybe they don’t remember how much PA loves to spend on his team if they are close to a title.
Didn't you hear?
Paul Allen doesn’t even really like sports, he’s just a business man. He won’t spend money unless he gets about 4x the amount back in money. That is according to a very wise and all knowing l*ker fan.
haha
If owners are in the NBA to make money, they probably aren’t good businessmen.
They don’t seem to get that Paul Allen can afford whatever he wants, and the “well they’re good but wait till the rookie deals are up” argument is a popular one right now as a way to dismiss the potential of the Blazers. In this situation, it doesn’t make sense as all of the kids we got are great kids and the best players out of the group will EASILY be kept with big money if they are worth it.
The only way we lose one of our guys is if they aren’t very good (or not the right player for us in a few years), or if they want to be the main guy elsewhere and are willing to take less money to be the Top Dogg (for example, someone like Bayless might be good enough to one day be the 1st option on a team, but never for the Blazers. Of course, we can pay him all the money he deserves if he’s that good, so it won’t be a money issue).

Roy is our "veteran"
I don’t know when people will finally realize that. He’s the glue that binds and makes the whole thing stay together. James Jones was a perfect compliment “off-the-bench” veteran for the Blazers. They don’t need a superstar veteran, just someone who can help out and provide guidance when needed.

Oden's Impact
Special players transcend sterotypes. As fans, some of what we say is the natural reluctance to have our hearts broken if something ala Bowie/Walton should happen to Oden. But I believe Oden is a special player. If so, the Blazers could surprise us. Walton had 4 years of college, but was dominant the moment he stepped into the NBA. Lebron had no college, but within a year was leading that team. Magic instantly made the Lakers better, as Bird did with the Celtics. The hints we get as the Blazers try to control expectations make Oden Formidable. “He is a quick as a SF, and can move laterally as well as any PF”. “He’s powerful”. More so than the other centers. You listen – and you wait. Every position on the Blazers will change if Oden is 1/2 what people are saying. That’s what happened the moment Walton stepped on the court.
We tend to focus too much on offense. Oden may need a year or two, after all, to polish his offensive skills.
But defense and rebounding win championships. Russell proved that, and when Chamberlain stopped trying to score 100 pts a night and focused on defense and rebounds – he got his ring.
Defense and rebounding win the championships because it “reduces” the number of chances the other team has to score, while increasing ours. They get fewer second shots, and their play is disrupted.
Whether Oden scores 20 a night is secondary – simply because he gives the Blazers more chances to score while subtracting those chances from the other team. And since NBA players can all generally score in the 43% – 47% range, it doesn’t matter who makes the shot with the extra chances. Russel understood that.
My take is that Oden’s real impact will be the two things he already has the skills to do well – play defense, disrupt the other team, and rebound.
When I look at Oden – I see a larger version of Bill Russell. And, keep in mind, players like Walton and Russel did most of their scoring around the basket. Walton would move out to 15 feet or at times, but he never did need an “outside” shot. Neither did Russel. After all, they had wings and guards to take those shots, just as Oden will have Aldridge and Roy, as well as players like Bayless, Fernandez, Outlaw and Webster. Soft centers get moved out of position. Powerful players own the spot. Oden will own the basket in most matchups. Put backs, dunks, short hooks will be his game.
Sounds like Pryz to me...
My take is that Oden’s real impact will be the two things he already has the skills to do well – play defense, disrupt the other team, and rebound.

I think
Just predicting Joel will score 4ppg is a seriously optimistic, warm fuzzy statement!
Timbo is getting a head start!
Unless Oden is a bumbling beast with two hamhocks for hands and no jumpin/dunking/rebounding ability, then he’ll average more than 8ppg.
And since Joel has cement block hands and has lost a considerable amount of his leaping ability over the last few years (but this has also made him foul less by trying to block everything), 4 ppg in even more limited minutes would be being overly hopeful, in my opinion.
And I love the big lug, Pryzzle! He’s great! But worrying about his playing time shouldn’t be a concern, since it will be whatever Oden can’t play and we WANT Oden to be able to handle these minutes he’s gonna get.
