Junk Drawer - 8/4/08 PLEASE UN-REC
im still awake and see that no one has put up the junk box
question, does anyone know how to get the tab-throu feature to work with mozilla? ya know, how when using IE all the unread comments are highlighted untill you either leave the thread or mark as read. by eitheer using the "z" or "x" keys. I like this cause I dont have to reread a whole thread of 68 comments just to find the 3 new responces. with mozilla, when I enter a thread, all the comments are markedd as unread immediatly, and the "z" key doesnt let me tab-throu the comments.
oh yah, random thoughts go hear.

I hope
You shut your stupid fat face about the stupid damn schedule.
Sorry that came out meaner than I meant :-(
I’ll be bummed if we really are playing 18 out of 21 games away from home to start off. What if they don’t let us play at home all season, because they know how good we are at the Rose Garden? The games are rigged of course, and since they don’t want us to win all the time they’ll make us not be at home.
That’s life in Stern’s America.

I took a nap today and as I was dozing off, I thought of Dave, Ben, and Blazer's Edge
Do you think they are the holy trinity of Blazer’s Edge? I need to work out the details more but Dave is pretty much all knowing, as to what takes place on Blazer’s Edge. Blazer’s Edge is our universe and even though it wasn’t created by Dave, he takes care of it. Ben is sort of the Holy Spirit of Blazer’s Edge. I think Dave is Blazer’s Edge Jesus.

Using Firefox
Unread comments are highlighted. Pressing “C” will take you to the unread ones.

when using firefox
as soon as I enter a thread, all the comments are unhighlighted. and if the thread sais that there are 13 new coments before I click to enter, once I have, that will go away. with IE the new comments is black at the top of the comments just under the main post in a thread, and will stay unchanged untill I leave the thread. and I have no idea why.
so what your saying is that when you use firefox, the unread comments are highlighted for you?

It depends
I came to this post just now from my profile because I saw there was a reply. Your comment was not highlighted. But then I clicked “11 new” (or whatever new) on a post on the sidebar and they were all highlighted. Also I clicked on the title of one in the sidebar and all of those were highlighted.
I had trouble with the latest Firefox upgrade and had to ask Tech Support for help, but that was when I couldn’t log in. They are very quick to respond with suggestions. Just scroll to the bottom of this page and click on Contact Us.
But yes, unread comments are highlighted and you can jump to them in order using C.
If you haven’t tried logging out of BE and in again you might try that too.

Sophia, my respect for Jorga
is very high. She’s clearly a lady, so referring to her with the B word, even though it was kindly and positively meant, struck me like calling Dave the HNIC. Sorry, l I took offense to your compliment to Jorga, but that phrase has a very ugly connotation from my background.

TheOdenator: The first boss I really respected
was a black skinned sergeant from Detroil who was very much a victim of the military racism of the 1950s. He had a wry way of referring to himself as our unit’s HNIC. Usually, when I think of that expression, it is in wistful memory of Jerry. My brother was seriously brain damaged and died in an institution, so my use of that other acronym was questionable, too. The “B” I referred to was a woman with the authority to fire people, something she did with what appeared to be ruthless pleasure.

My respect for Jorga is very high as well
Bitch, to me is not an insult. Many poweful women are categorized as a bitch because she is outspoken, smart, witty and doesnt take any crap from the boys. AT the end of the day though, it s a word and I meant it as a sign of respect. HBIC is also a form of respect. I wouldn’t take “urbandictionary”’s word for it either. I understand how you may be offended and for that I apologize.

I recently met a singer / rapper who calls herself "Lady Bitch Ray"
Nice name, nice girl. She totally plays with the attitude and perception and sees it as a compliment. And if her music career doesn’t work out (which it does), she is also a Ph.D. in her real life as a backup plan ;-)
I usually wouldn’t call somebody else that way, though of course it sounds different if it comes from a young woman that calls herself or others that in zest.

Ridiculous Matt has a point
I agree with Ridiculous Upside that it’s kinda bad that the NBA overpays some guys and others have to go to Europe to make money playing BBall.
It just bothers me that guys with considerable talent and a passion for the game don’t get a chance to live their dream while Kwame Brown gets $8 million over two years. Stephon Marbury is making about 25 times what it would cost to get these guys to sign. And that just irritates me. I’m glad somebody out there values talent.
"We, as Blazer fans, are perhaps the luckiest fans in the league."-Idog1976, July 19.
by jorga on Aug 4, 2008 10:02 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Some guys always find a GM that is willing to overpay for them
Especially when GMs look to retain players or fill holes in their roster instead of going after the best available free agents. After a few years, those become the coveted “expiring contracts”. Nobody will pay Marbury $20 million on his next deal, he can call himself lucky if he gets more than the MLE. While Brown is still overpaid he wouldn’t be criticized so much if he hadn’t been picked #1, I think he is a decent big man.
Since every year about 30 to 45 young players enter the league via the draft and there are only 450 roster spots at a time, some veterans or draft picks from recent years leave the league more or less silently and unnoticed (interesting topic for an article or fanpost, but requires some research), and some young guys that would have the talent never make it to the NBA.

I look at it as a negative
but I’m thinking about guys with families – like Dan Dickau. Now there are some places I wouldn’t mind taking small children for a year or more, but Russia isn’t one of them (and I speak from absolutely no experience and could be very wrong.) And Dan may never make it back to the NBA so its be a Euro gypsy baller or come home and do something else. I do think Dan will become a coach at some level.
"We, as Blazer fans, are perhaps the luckiest fans in the league."-Idog1976, July 19.
by jorga on Aug 4, 2008 3:45 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Speaking from experience about Russia
the experience that families of ballers would have would be very dependent on what city they are playing in (Moscow or St. Petersburg would be the best as they are the largest and the most cosmopolitan), how much support the club is willing to give to families of players and how ready for adventure the family is.
by tingeyga on Aug 5, 2008 2:05 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
And it also depends on the age of the kids
I think I’d hesitate taking a toddler, but it could be a terrific experience for anyone age 8 and beyond. (I would look carefully at health care for any country where I’d consider taking a baby … or pregnancy. Of course the teams might make sure the players’ families had only the best – but I’d still want to know what “best” was.)

What "best" means really depends on where you are
I’ve heard that in Moscow and St. Petersburg some ex-patriot dentists and doctors have set up shop catering to Americans living in the city and/or rich Russians, so there you probably could get the same standard of care that you would in the States in those cities
I needed to use the medical facilities of a mid-sized Russian city (Krasnodar) a couple times. Once to get some stiches, another time to get some blood drawn as part of the process to renew my VISA. The doctor who stiched me up did a good job and the scar is hardly noticeable. Getting my blood drawn though was pretty sketchy.
I also saw some of the maternity wards in a small Russian city (Tuapse), that were so sketchy that those Russians that had the money went elsewhere. So yes, the quality of health care is also an important aspect of the package that needs to be taken into account.
On the same subject, I read an article that addressed some of the facts/fiction about NBAers going to play in Europe. Towards the end of the article, an agent gives this quote about playing in Russia:
“Guys feel more comfortable in traditional overseas countries like Italy or Spain, but Russia is paying more now because of logistical conditions.
If you are in Moscow or Saint Petersburg, fine. But [Spartak] Vladivostok is practically in North Korea! They played in the FIBA Europe Cup last season, and teams refused to fly there. They had to play their ‘home’ games in Moscow, which is a 10-hour flight. But they pay a lot of money, and that makes up for it.”

Are we interested in Andre Iguodala?
Don’t have enough info for a fanpost, but rumors have it that talks between him and the Sixers are stalling. He seems to be demanding money in the Luol Deng range (ca. 70+ million over 6 years). Philly wants him back, but is also looking into sign-and-trades. They couldn’t take back e.g. the RLEC for him due to BYC restrictions (unless we take on a bad contract, but they don’t have that many), and we would have to offer at least one nice player for him. Any interest in a slasher and high-flying dunker who is 24, could start on 3 but also play the 2, has a PER of 19 (!), can get close to 20 ppg any night, gives a lot of assists for a player on his position but is only an average outside shooter and defender?
There are also rumors that Indiana is in talks with Danny Granger about a long-term contract extension already this year. I support the “wait until 2009 and see school of thought”, but have to admit that with Deng off the market at least the number of attractive free-agent targets is getting smaller right now – which of course doesn’t prevent us from making a good trade next season.

Ben Gordon and RLEC
Just kind of an interesting idea. No one else has the money, and we would be getting a lot of value for the Contract. This is of course ridiculous as we already have Brandon and could use the contract to shore up our SF position.
But it is kind of interesting that you can assume the Bulls make this sign-and-trade, as they are very worried about spending too much money, and he would also give them the Big man with the scoring ability that they have wanted (believe me I know he is not up to putting in very many minutes on the court, but he would be valuable in the veteran big man position, and there is something he does know how to do and teach, and that is scoring from the post position).
Ben Gordan puts up almost 20 points a game, and can just shoot the lights out. While i am looking forward to Rudy acting in the SG role, it would be pretty amazing if he ended up being a better player than Gordon. Gordon also will almost certainly shoot the 3-ball better, and while we are giving up 2 years of youth (to the day actually) we are gaining a lot in the fact that we can be fairly confident of what he will bring to the table, and while it definitely is a slap in the face to Rudy to bring in a back-up over his position, should we care that much if it makes our team better?
if the plan is to let RLEC expire then we probably would have signed PK from the summer league, if the plan is to make a big trade, then (IMO) it can’t get much better than this. While we can sit and wait for another player, Ben Gordon would still (again IMO) have value as a trading piece. And if we do keep him, he would be an excellent piece in the 4th quarter when Brandon takes the PG position. According to his rep he would want a little bit more than Larry Hughes is getting, which would match almost perfectly with Raef.
The other thing is the Bulls also have the option of simply not signing Ben Gordon, and taking the money off of the cap straight off. So if this were to happen it would almost definitely require giving up some pieces that we probably don’t want to part with, but after reading the Sports Illustrated article about the Gordon issue, I realized that we are one of a very few teams that might be interested in this.

Not a Ben Gordon fan.
He’s really nothing more than a scorer off the bench. Right now Portland has at least 4 guys who might fill that role (Travis, Fyre, Bayless, Fernandez), each at a much cheaper price. In fact, for the money Gordon wants, we could pay all 4 of our guys.

That's all James Jones was as well
and we really struggled in the last season when he wasn’t healthy.
And Gordon in 8 more minutes than Jones per game, was able to score 10 more points this last season. I am not saying that he is necessarily worth the money, but we are the only team that thinks the Luxury Tax works to our benefit. And since it doesn’t look like we are going to let the money come off the books, then the money is being spent, and I don’t think very many other players of a high caliber are going to be in a position where their team simply cannot afford him.
As far as the Travis Frye Bayless and Fernandez melange,, we don’t know that Bayless and Fernandez will be able to provide that pop in the NBA. Travis and Frye together equal Gordon’s offensive production, and its not like we are giving up any of them. If Gordon’s not working out, then sure play Fernandez and Bayless instead, then we’ve got a BGEC instead of a RLEC

The difference between Gordon and Jones...
... besides the scoring you pointed out, is that Jones cost us about $3 million last season. Gordon is asking in the $10 million a year range. That’s a lot of money for a bench scorer who doesn’t do much else. For less money, Outlaw and Frye provide similar scoring and bring more to the table in other areas than Gordon does.

I would like to get somebody of that quality (though Gordon would mainly duplicate many of the skills we already have at his position)
But unfortunately the way you described it is not how sign and trades work (anymore) in a lot of situations. Ben Gordon would demand and get quite a big raise in comparison to his rookie contract (greater than 20%, which is the limit) and thus be under Base Year Compensation (BYC) for six months after signing his new contract, which makes trading for him much more complicated cause effectively his trade value will be considered 50% lower than his salary. Let’s say the Bulls give him a contract that pays him $12 million per year over 5 years to match Raef (almost the maximum for a player 4 years in the league like Gordon), up from 4.9. But under BYC his trade value would be only 6 million, and since the Bulls are over the cap (another precondition for a player to get the BYC status) they can’t take back the “additional” money of Raef’s salary. We are also over the cap right now, which makes it again more complicated. So we would have to offer a player or players for him who earn approx. half of the salary Gordon is scheduled to get (e.g. Joel). Or the Bulls would have to add more players not under BYC (=bad contracts). Nothing is free ;-)

Oh oh, hopefully Gordon is not going Spreewell on Chicago
“Restricted free-agent G Ben Gordon says he has tried to maintain patience through a second summer of difficult contract negotiations with the Bulls. He says he knows Chicago has spoken with at least two teams about sign-and-trade options, but nothing has come of the discussions. No matter what happens, Gordon would like the chance to start—but it’s not a deal-breaker if a new team asks him to be a sixth man. “It’s important, but it’s not that important,” Gordon says. “I have been coming off the bench and sharing both roles pretty much throughout my whole career in Chicago. I have learned that the most important part is finishing the game, and I have been on the floor at the end of games. The decision now is more about doing the right thing for me and my family than about starting.“

Random Trade
I know we dont want to trade any of our players, and we want to see how the season starts out before we do anything but..
Tayshaun Prince/Antonio McDyess
for
Martell Webster/Raefs Corpse
I don’t know how serious Dumars is about rebuilding his team. While he loses an integral piece in Prince, he gets back a dangerous shooter in Martell and serious cap relief. I think McDyess is over paid and at the end of the road, but he would be a good mentor and a serviceable backup. In the worst case we could flip him to another team for an expiring contract if need be.
Would you do it? I would
Would Detroit do it? I think it would maybe take a future pick in there, but I would be willing to part with one of our first rounders down the line.. maybe 2010 or 2011

I wish TP was a better 3pt shooter. But if that trade is available I’d do it easily. Tayshaun is a team player, if he’s asked to just play some solid D and score like 10ppg he’ll do it. Travis can be the offense from our 3.

No
Martell is a better fit on the starting lineup. So I’d prefer him there if at all possible. Also unless Detroit slips badly next year their pick is only going to be the in the 23-27 range. We can buy a pick like that. If it was closer to a 15 or 17 maybe. But Travis with his play, youth, and contract is a very hot commodity. So I’d like to keep him around unless it’s a “that blows my mind offer”.

I agree with the sentiment
But at the same time, while he is a hot commodity, we as fans severly overvalue travis. If we could parlay him into an all-star at prince I would do it. I would do it in a heartbeat for Martell, I would think hard on it for outlaw but I would still likely do it

I'm not a big Travis fanboy
But getting a 14ppg scorer/clutch player at like 3 or 4mil a year is amazing. Especially when they are only 24 and can jump like a gazelle.
I would say that Outlaw might even be better offensively than Prince. TP certainly can’t create offense by himself. I would LOVE TP on the Blazers, he’s that lock down defender that would really help our team, but Travis provides some very important things for us. Things that we can’t really replace. Aside from Travis we have very few proven scorers on the bench, and besides Roy he’s the only player we can count on in the clutch. Until we have someone that replicates these things, I would be very hesitant to trade him.

Although I disagree
I respect your argument on that. We do need his scoring down the stretch, he is a value for the price and he certainly can jump. I would say that TP scores in the system more than creates his own shot. He can, he routinely backs down SF and shoots that weird looking jumper, and is a pretty decent outside shooter. In my opinion is the passing ability, the defense, the bbiq, and the size that really factor in to my decision. Also the fact that he has proven it for years on a very high level. But I understand your argument

I can grow quite a dense full beard and luckily don't get much of a neck beard.
But I had pretty sensitive skin, too. For years I went back and forth with wet shaving (all kinds of foams and razors) and various electric shavers. And once you really have to start, it never stops – unless you completely want to lose the ability to grow a beard ;-)
Now I have settled with a Philips Smart Touch XL for a about three years. Amazing. Long hair, short hair, it doesn’t matter anymore. No irritations.

I like Tayshaun
Besides my obvious weakness for lightskinned, tall, skinny boys, his d fence is off the HOOK. He would make our team better.. no doubt. However, McDyess = dead weight. TP is a pretty good shooter and I would worry about the eventual touchs he takes away from Travis.. as the 4th q is Travis’ time. IMO adding TP is going to hurt Nate’s system.

I would agree for the most part
But I think that all the things that Tayshaun does for the team outweigh Travis’ scoring. Tayshaun can also play the 4 against quite a few teams and that versatility is big in my book. As for McDyess, I agree he is basically dead weight, hence why I offered up a trade for an expiring, or at least use him to teach some of the PF some moves.
I would still do the trade..

While we are talking about random players (not my preferred options, but options)
What about acquiring Rip Hamilton or Jamal Crawford next year? Both have early termination options in 2009, so they could become unrestricted free agents a la Baron Davis and Elton Brand if they and their agents were convinced we would sign them.
Crawford (6’5, would be 29 then) is great friends with Brandon Roy as we recently learned (hey now, that surprised me a little). Like Roy SG is the natural position for his size but he can also play some time at the point. Including Bayless basically we would have a team with three combo guards (has that been done before?). He can mail it in at times (Chicago fans still hate him), but is arguably the best player on the Knicks roster and I suppose Roy has his respect. Still the Knicks might not even try to bring him back to save more cap space for their desperate 2010 efforts.
Hamilton is two years older, taller (6’7), great outside shot, moves amazingly well without the ball (what Roy still is learning), and has proven that he can win it all.

Both dudes play a position we’re super solid at (or look to be super solid at) and are just offensive players. So, they won’t get many shots (especially in Crawford’s case) and have no real role on the team.
They’re starter-level talents, and won’t be happy picking up Roy’s scraps, even if Roy moves to PG (which won’t be and SHOULDN’T be a full time thing).
Crawford is a very smart guy in real life, but a very selfish sort of player. He just wants to shoot.
Rip is good but not what we’d need at all. I’d much rather have someone who gives us something we want and need, like Prince. He would be incredible as our SF, and his scoring has always been artifically held back by being on such a solid team and being a great teammate. He could score if he was the main dude, but the fact that he’s ok with letting others get the numbers impresses me—along with his great defense, his passing, his ability to dribble the ball and initiate an offense or take dudes off the dribble, etc.
Prince would be a dream SF. Crawford or Rip don’t have a clear role on the team aside from being mismatched talents, and in Crawford’s case I bet Bayless or Rudy will fit us much, much better.

In that case
Would you agree with my earlier trade proposal for Prince?
Or is that too much to give up

I probably would
The only thing holding me back would be the unlimitedness if what the RLEC could bring, but I know if ultimately the RLEC was used to get Prince, I would be extremely delighted.
Martell, or Travis, either one I am willing to give up to get Prince. I know I’m in the minority here, but Travis’ defense will likely never be playoff worthy, let alone championship worthy. He’s just too slow and BAD at it to make a leap anywhere close to where Prince is. I don’t wanna trade either kid, but Prince is very good and his worth goes beyond his numbers. I doubt Travis will even be a starter-worthy defender.
I love Travis as a backup scorer, though.
And why do you and Sophia not think much of McDyess? He’s a terrific backup/spot starter and still very effective; especially considering his age and injuries. He’d be our best backup big man easily, even over Pryzz (though obviously McDyess is a PF not a center like Joel).
I dunno if the Pistons would go for it, and I doubt it, but we’d be winning that trade no problemo. Prince will be good for several more years and his team-first few-shots-needed game is PERFECT for us. He can guard anyone that would give us problems in the playoffs and brings a versatile offensive game that is underrated because his PPG is low. He can run, drive, shoot, post up, he’s great.
If we didn’t have cap space coming up and the limitless options that flexibity brings us, I would definitely say this is a deal I would do from here to eternity.

Maybe we should make a list of free agents and others that could be an upgrade over (one of) our SF guys
I guess it would be pretty short. Mine would look something this (age is a criteria that would rank you better imo):
Danny Granger (Restricted in 2009, and Indiana is trying to lock him up right now)
Rudy Gay (Restricted in 2010)
Andre Iguodala (Restricted right now in 2008)
Josh Smith (Restricted right now in 2008, slight head case)
Tayshaun Prince (Salary $10 – 11 million until 2011)
Caron Butler (great value at around $10 million, locked up until 2011)
Josh Howard (Salary $10 million per year, could be UFA in 2010 team option, developing into a slight head case)
Shane Battier (nice value at around $7 million especially on defense, locked up until 2011)
Gerald Wallace (Salary $10 million per year locked up until 2013, slight health issues)
Josh Childress (Restricted as long as ATL makes him a qualifying offer each year)
Players that didn’t make the cut for various reasons in no particular order:
LeBron James (NY, needs to be #1)
Carmelo Anthony (needs to be #1)
Kevin Durant (where do I sign, but won’t happen until 2011 at the earliest unless we give on of the big 3 + x)
Francisco Garcia (is he really better at 26?)
Shawn Marion (age vs. price)
Andrei Kirilenko (performance vs. price)
Peja Stojakovic (age)
Richard Jefferson (just traded, a little expensive at 13-15 million, could be unrestricted in 2010 (ETO) or 11)
Luol Deng (just extended)
Tracy McGrady (health/age vs. price)
Stephen Jackson (age, head case)

Yeah...
“I understand what Yao said, but I’m still ghetto,” Artest said, according to the report. “That’s not going to change. I’m never going to change my culture. Yao has played with a lot of black players, but I don’t think he’s ever played with a black player that really represents his culture as much as I represent my culture. Once Yao Ming gets to know me, he’ll understand what I’m about.”
Later in the PTI interview, Artest added: “I’m not just some knucklehead head case who’s bipolar, [like] everybody is always saying. I’m Ron Artest. Everybody’s different. That’s why we’ve got different DNA … They gotta come up with a better story than Ron’s crazy. There’s a lot better stories that they can come up with.”

His knees scare me
And he is good for very short bursts.. I would rather have him mentor Frye than play big minutes

Michael Phelps, totally off subject
Definitely junk drawer material…but…check this out….
I just received my ESPN the magazine today, and it has Olympic swimmer (and swimming God) Michael Phelps on the cover, with the captions “Aquaman Returns” and “Michael Phelps, Superhero”. He is walking underwater in a pool, showing some major muscles. Probably the best mag cover I’ve ever seen, and I’m not really a swimming fan (I can barely tread water). But I really admire his accomplishments.. Pretty cool looking picture. Google it, buy it, etc. – check it out. Very, very, very cool.
