Finally a tad bit of Blazer news (Travis Outlaw)
Here are a few highlights:
So he is content to wait another year, perhaps two, for his personal aspirations to take precedence. But he wants to make one thing clear: He is not content remaining with the status quo of his game.
"I don't want to be a sixth man forever," Outlaw says. So he emphatically declares that Portland fans will see a different Outlaw this season. One who is confident. One who will hit the corner three-pointer. One who can create his own shot. And one who will rebound. In fact, his personal goal this season is to average 16 points and eight rebounds, marked increases from his career-high averages last season of 13.3 points and 4.6 rebounds.
Outlaw averaged 11.8 shots per game last season -- third highest on the Blazers behind Roy and Aldridge -- and he was given free rein to create his own shot, particularly in the fourth quarter. But he says he would like to average 15 shots this season -- the amount Roy and Aldridge averaged last season -- and disputes the notion that he had the green light with the Blazers.
Anyone else a tad concerned that he may not be the best fit here after these comments? I hope there are enough shots to go around.
You know the routine with these Rip City revival pieces. New article every day.

I think it's very encouraging
We’ve been waiting to see this from Travis for a while now. I know last season was real good for him, however I wasn’t completely sold on how badly he wanted it. Lack of training in off season and lack of basketball knowledge in previous seasons, were some of the reason for my set of beliefs, or lack there of, in Travis. I really hope this maturity and drive is real because he has all of the abilities to be a special player.
I’ve always loved his personality
I love his play making ability
I will love it when he starts to show how much he really wants it
Maybe then he’ll get that all start nod that he’s now striving for
I also do not believe his 15 shots a game will hurt the team, especially on the second unit. I think he’ll realize that if he’s in the starting unit he won’t get his 15 shots unless it just happens to work that way. If he’s taking bad shots and they’re not going down he’ll hear about it and he’ll learn.
The pictures kinda small, but Im giving the C's a big thumbs down

one of the biggest reasons I've loved Travis Outlaw for this team
was that he was content to come off the bench and wouldn’t rock the boat for more attention/shots. With the amount of talent that has been assembled here, we just can’t afford another ego. We need solid role players who are about winning, not looking like kobe bryant. I’m taking Travis a little out of context there, but I was a little surprised to read/hear some of the comments the normally shy and humble Travis made on this thing. On the other hand, he should want to improve and you can’t blame the guy for wanting more opportunities to do so.
Asked whether he noticed Oden favoring his right knee, Frye dismissed it entirely.
"He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors," Frye said after giving up his share to Oden in the workout.

it seems like
he was more in his comfort zone and was able to share his feelings. We haven’t really heard this side of Travis before and its refreshing. Easy going, talkative, and relaxed Travis in Mississippi seems like more fun than shy and quiet Portland Travis

I agree completely
this article really shook my opinion of Outlaw and his future here. My favorite thing about him was him being wiling to be a Sixth man and leader of the White Unit. He made it clear this won’t be acceptable over the long term. Worrisome…

THIS JUST IN:
TRAVIS OUTLAW HAS SUSTAINED AN INJURY TO HIS LEG:
Travis said he hurt it playing basketball working out but there is some evidence to the contrary. He seems to have injured his hip and doctors have said it could be from excessive rotation of the hip. They are still clueless of what could of caused the injury.
Lets hope he goes not hurt it again with all that hula hooping he does not throw hos hip out.
I gotta get me one of those T-Law shirts that would be the sweetest things.

I really enjoyed the article. I do kind of wish that Travis had talked more about how he could best serve the interests of the team. A little too much about Travis.

Please step away from the trade machine now...
Trading #25 and #5 in one deal should be considered a petty theft, only topped by trading #25 and #52. The sad thing is that Memphis wouldn’t even do it for the former combo ;-)
The self-help group meets in the “Bill Simmons conference room” on the ESPN campus. Agenda: “Players loved dearly in Portland.” “Players loved dearly in Memphis.” “Sorry Indiana fans, Jamal Tinsley is worth next to nothing at this point.” “Sorry New York fans, Stephon Marbury is worth less than Jamal Tinsley at this point.”

I forgot about that. None the less I thought the word was T-law was coming back early this summer and in shape. If he comes in shape I will feel alot better about things. I’m glad he wants to improve his rebounding but I want to hear his desire to improve his handle and man on man defense. This article just made me all jittery too much coffee maybe.

I don't remember to be honest
it’s possible. If that is correct then that is awesome and I’m glad to hear it. I know Martell has been working all summer long. I want Outlaw to be happy as the greatest 6th man ever or step up his defense and be a starter on a great dynasty. Lord knows he has the physical gifts and the offensive skills and the great personality. I just want him to come in shape and work hard on his defense. If he does that he can take 15 to 20 shots a game and it will be worth it. If he doesn’t work on his defense he is only an energizer off the bench not the star he can be. Lucky for him it’s in Travis’ hands.

That’s when I knew Outlaw was a low character guy because he was working on one of his weaknesses. Everyone was upset that dribbling with his off hand was a weakness.
Did I ever tell you you're my hero?

I'll go on record
If Travis is able to pull down 8 rebounds a game, with the Rebound Vacuum that we’ll have patrolling the middle this year, and if he really is knocking down the corner 3 consistently, then I don’t mind him getting 1-2 shots more a game. And that’s all it will take to get him up to 16 ppg.
Go for it, Travis. That corner 3 and that level of rebounding may earn you that starting spot.
There’s nothing new here. He’s said in the past he’d like to be an all-star.

Sounds like the 2nd coming of Shawn Marion or Joe Johnson who
would rather be on a losing team and be the “man” than be a cog in the wheel of a title contender. To each his own I suppose. I appreciate his candor and ambition but don’t like his priorites for this team. Bye bye Travis, hello Tayshaun Prince.

by oderiferous emanations 74 on Sep 1, 2008 12:57 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
i think it's interesting how peope take this interview.
Fans of Travis see it as his commitment to be better and want to keep an improved Travis as the starting SF. People that are not as big fans of Travis as, well as you described it, “the 2nd coming of Shawn Marion.” The truth I think lies in between, if Travis wants lots of shots he’s not going to fit in the starting lineup, but if he’s satisfied with those shots off the bench he might fit.
by Zaron5551 on Sep 1, 2008 1:03 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
He specifically addressed that
He is NOT wanting to be 6th man forever. I’m sure he doesnt’ mean he wants to be 7th man. So therefore he does NOT want to come off the bench and he wants more shots and a green light like Melo’ scary scary stuff.

Self-awareness is the first step to changing / influencing your situation
“I saw Bayless have a great Summer League,” Outlaw says. “And Rudy, he’s having a great Olympics, you know? Shots are going to go down somewhere, and I feel I’m the lowest guy on the totem pole, so it may be me.”
It seemss pretty easy: If Travis creates his shots consistently, he will be able to stabilize or even increase the number of attempts he gets. If he doesn’t, Nate will call more plays for Rudy, Jerryd,…
Odenied: Asked whether he noticed Oden favoring his right knee, Frye dismissed it entirely. "He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors."

I think Quick really nailed this
Nice post. Public persona in Portland is different than public persona in Starkville and different again from private persona. I choose to accept the private persona as accurate while Travis wants to be the best (and probably doubts he can get there off the bench) he still wants the wins and the team game.
I remember Dean’s comments at summer league about Travis being the fourth of the big four. He will not lose shots because better defense will increase team shots this year. Bayless and Rudy are going to get theirs but Travis is still the key to the white unit and will not be disappointed. His defense has to improve to start (not mentioned in this story).
Aldridge said. "We feel like we can beat any team. We feel like we can beat the Spurs, Suns, Lakers, Mavericks, whoever any night right now, and we'll still be here when those teams get old and their guys retire. We're going to be here for a long time."

Attitude is an interesting dilemma.
You absolutely want your players to have the attitude that they can be as good as the best players in the league, given the opportunity.
You absolutely do not want the attitude that they deserve the same opportunities as the best players in the league.
Fifteen shot attempts is less than 20% of the total offense. But with this team, Outlaw is right to concerned that he may not get that many. What I want to see is Outlaw responds to this. Will he play well enough that he naturally gets those fifteen shots, or will he come in thinking that he has already earned them? The former is everyone’s dream, the latter is everyone’s nightmare. Fortunately, I think the former is most likely, given Outlaw’s personality and previous attitude.

I’d probably be more worried if he was content with his role, but the fact that he’s driven and wants to attain more should pay divedends to him and the team.

I think Travis is a great guy but its a little disturbing that he dosent seem to realize that his sub-par defense is the largest obstacle between him and a starting role.It may be that he and Sergio both would do better elsewhere.

Trade him
Trade any player that shows a bit of confidence or that wants to be great at his occupation. We don’t need that with the Blazers. I bet there are a few teams out in the league that could make room for such an arrogant, pompis kid. REAL Blazer fans only want players that are great full to be here, and that don’t want things like recognition and a large contract.

I think the fact he'd rather shoot jumpers instead of dunks or layins
because Kobe Bryant made a cool face one time after he made a jumper….says just about all you need to know about Travis’s intellect.
Travis forced up a ton of shots last year and if he repeats that trend this year, well….
I like Travis, he seems like a nice kid. I think Blazer fans overrate him quite a bit. And I wonder if he’s smart enough to make himself into a NBA star. I lean towards not.
