Oden nicknames?

I was just wondering if Oden has been given an official nickname yet. I was thinking a good one might be the "Headmaster" because he's gonna take all the nba kids to school. I think it would also work well for the nba promotions I'm sure he's going to be a part of in the coming years. They could show him dressed up in his tweed jacket sitting in a library warning all the other teams about how they're about to get punished.

"Headmaster" Mimir, Great Uncle of Odin

Mimir

A modern image (to left) inspired by the mythical Mimir of Norse mythology, source.

Mimir was a giant of superhuman strength who stood half-immersed in the Waters of Ultimate Wisdom, supporting the Kjolen Mountains on his powerful shoulders. He was said to have been at his post since the world came into being and to have become part of the mountain itself. Oracles in ancient times would bring vessels and retrieve water from the pool in order to learn the secrets of the earth. Mimir was sometimes depicted as perhaps being the brother of Odin’s etin-mother Bestla and keeper of the Well (or spring) of Mimir, in which all wisdom lies – the spring where (Greg) Odin gave up his eye to drink

The Oden Era, Day 428

by Heymoe on Aug 30, 2008 6:26 PM PDT reply actions

wow that's a mouthfull

That’s a pretty cool story, and it does seem really appropriate, perhaps a little obscure though? I don’t know if the man and the league are going to want to go to all that trouble to explain it. I think it’s headed in the right direction though. I like the more scholarly approaches to his nickname, instead of names like the “Beast” and the “Old Man”.

G.O. Time!!!

I think that says it all. I can just hear Wheels screaming GO TIME!!!! Booom-chaka-laka!!!!! OH that was naaaaaaassssty!!

BLACK LINCOLN

THE GREAT EMANCIPATOR, freeing us from our chains of CHAMPIONSHIPLESSNESS.

In the end, Oden’s impact will be so huge, his fame so great, that his nickname will be shortened to just “LINCOLN” and Abe Lincoln will go as “White Lincoln”.

hilarious!!

I bet they used to call Abe “White Lincoln” when Greg would stop by for dinner at the white house.

by Tyler Durrden on Aug 30, 2008 7:03 PM PDT up reply actions

And when Oden plays for Team USA

it will be modified as Lincoln Continental

And when he gets his "Up and Under" move down pat

ooooh….and when he goes into the Hall of Fame, the plaque will be referred to as The Lincoln Memorial

I think the big chill is boring.

How about “The thing that goes bump in the night, the taker of dreams, he who has become death…destroyer of worlds”? Might be a bit long but they could call him “TTTGBITNTTODHWHBDDOW’S”?

Why?

do you need a nickname when you share a name with a Norse(?) god?

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

There really aren't any cool nick names to give him. I mean the guys name is Greg Oden. Just the image

that puts in your head should be enough. When someone says his name I think of a man beast that will dunk on your mom if she’s in the lane.

how about MR or Sir

greg is already a mythical figure in the nba..he probably want have a nick name.,, if he does its going to simply be G.O.

if it can be conceived it can be achieved

by lyfefindsaway on Aug 31, 2008 9:21 AM PDT reply actions

Not that

Not that I’m against nicknames but it seems to me when your real name is Greg Oden how do you do much better than simply calling him ODEN? Oden…sounds mythical in a Norse god sort of way, short, two syllables….Oden works for me.

Big 3 Nickname....

I have been trying to come up with a nickname for our big 3, but now I need some feedback. I’m sure you’ve all heard the term “global icons” or “global domination”, well if you use the initials of the big 3 you can come up with GROBAL …..is that close enough? Could they be the Grobal icons? Would anyone understand this? Am I just rambling at this point, or am I on to something? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated

by SalemORguy on Aug 31, 2008 1:00 PM PDT reply actions

I think rambling

maybe “Triple Threat” or “Trifecta” or “Triple Trees”?

by Tyler Durrden on Aug 31, 2008 6:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Oden's Preference

I have read somewhere - I believe in the same interview Norsktroll mentioned above - that Oden’s personal preference is G.O. I think we should respect that. How would you like to be a professional basketball player, maybe even a humble soul like Oden, with thousands of people calling you silly names like “The Big Chill” and “Black Lincoln” and “The Messiah”?

Personally I have trouble even referring to him as Greg in my commentary. We’re not on first-name terms.

I think Morty going with Black Lincoln

was primarily a joke and should be taken as such (hence my own, and others, joking extrapolations of the name).

I see

That was my mistake. I glanced very quickly over the names and did not read as closely as I should have.

by rpeachey on Aug 31, 2008 2:33 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think any of this is meant to mock Mr. Oden

I think this is about a bunch of fans who are friggin’ stoked to wake up every day like we are living in a dream. Doesn’t this team make everyone just kind of forget Zach Randolph, Q. Woods, Telfair and all of the jokers who used to run this team? And it’s not like we’re the announcers calling him this during a game, it’s just some people having fun.

No Name Needed

If Oden being recognized around the league as a name that shakes your boots isn’t enough, Then how about this:
Odin is considered the chief god in Norse paganism. His role, like many of the Norse gods, is complex. He is associated with wisdom, war, battle, and death, and also magic, poetry, prophecy, victory, and the hunt.
