Assemble Your Own Blazer Team Day 5: Point Guards
For those of you who have been playing along with our little "Build Your Own Blazer Team" experiment, today is the day you get to snag a point guard. If you haven't jumped on the bandwagon yet, scroll down through last week's posts and get cracking! In brief:
- You're assembling a rotation of eight.
- Each day you select one player from three for your team. The guys you pass up will NOT be available again, so choose wisely.
- Especially important today: You get the benefit of the player's Blazer years PLUS all the years after, even if he was traded! You do not, however, get any years before he became a Blazer.
- When this is all over, you can list your team and argue why you picked the best combination (by whatever criteria you chose).
Your three choices today are: Terry Porter, Fat Lever, or Rod Strickland.
Let us know below who you are taking and why.

Terry Porter
Lever had great career numbers, but Porter’s best years were excellent. I also think Porter’s 3 point shooting is essential for a great team.

I need my PG to be able to hit the perimeter shot to fit with the rest of my squad.
Oden, Buck, Pip, Roy, TP

I remember telling him how impressed I was with a player during summer league. In Avery's unique voice, he replied, "Marc, it's summer league." I
Take a look at Damon's stats
after becoming a Blazer and on through his career. He’s not even close to the other three.

However there will be an opportunity to take him later if that’s your desire.

Stats are nothing!
Damon’s intangibles are what counts!
And on that basis, I don’t think I’d pick him…
I remember Damon fondly. He was a healthy mix of a shoot-first point and a distributor. Not a historically great player, but certainly a very good one.

Although Strickland gets honorable mention for passing the ball backwards over his head to Uncle Cliffy while playing for the Spurs.

I liked Rod alot. He was an incredibily gifted player ( even if he didn’t always make the right choices). Fat was a blazer for such a short time but was amazing in the run and gun offence of the Denver Nuggets. But it would be almost impossable for me not to pick Porter.
He could shot, distribute the ball, steal, defend, cheer on the team and the crowd. So sorry Dave even with a free T-shirt ( unless it is signed by all the current Blazers!!!), I have to go with the Best Point Guard the team ever had.
TP!!!
Current Lineup
C – Sabas
PF – Buck
SF – Kersey
SG – Roy
PG – TP
Not a bad starting five at all!!!
D Marty
Terry Porter
for me. he’s the beefiest of the three has the best 3pt shooting percentage and FT %. (MY god look at strickland’s 3pt %, all over the map). Fat had remarkable rebounding numbers but with Oden, Lucas, Pippen and Roy I think I’ll manage with a couple fewer rebounds from my PG.
TP, i wonder if anyone's ganna pick anyone else?
Porter is just a much more balanced player then the two, rod is a gifted offensive player who stuck around the league forever, yet had some troubles here and there.
The starting Line up:
C-Oden
PF- Lucus
SF-Kersey
SG-Roy
PG-Porter
I do like that line up! (would be even better if i could replace kersey with the glide!!!!!)
You give me no choice. Porter it is. Given the other pieces I need that outside shot.

Porter, of course
Oden in the middle, Lucas to hit the mid-range jumper and help with rebounding and starting the fast break, Porter running the break with Kiki and Petrie on the wings.
The PG had to be Porter, but that makes Brandon not as good a fit, because his game is most often with the ball in his hands. When you’ve got Porter running the offense, a guy who is a huge threat as a spot-up shooter but is also a major threat to take it to the hole when the opportunity is there is what you are looking for.
With Oden and Luke handling the inside, and Porter with the rock in his hands, give me Petrie and Vandeweghe on the wings, both half-court and on the break. The team that could stay on the court with that lineup has never been constructed.
If Roy and Porter are on the same backcourt, you turn one of them into a spot-up shooter and occasional slasher. That’s not Roy’s strengths, and it is a waste of Porter’s ability.

I guess you don't believe great players can adapt.
If Drexler and Porter were able to form an effective backcourt, there is no reason to think that Roy and Porter would not.

Roy can adapt
but he may never be the shooter that Petrie was. You don’t really need two guys creating on the same team when either one is as good as Roy or Porter.
It’s not that they couldn’t be effective together. It is that the one thing that Roy really has over Petrie, IMO, is his ability to create with the ball, and that’s a skill I don’t need on my team, because I have Porter.
And the one thing that Petrie has over Roy is outside shooting, and that’s a skill I can really use with Oden and Lucas down low.

Roy Porter could work
Roy Paul worked great in the all-star game, and still scored, he is someone who can give it up
by raging WebTed on Aug 4, 2008 4:32 PM PDT up reply actions
Of course it could work
But Roy’s greatest value is running the offense. So is Porter’s. To put them together, you diminish someone’s value.
Did you see Petrie play? He would have been a perfect fit beside someone like Porter. He went for 24 pg his rookie year on a team where he was the only real legitimate threat. And they didn’t have 3 pointers back then.
Roy would be great beside Porter, but not as great as he will be beside Bayless. Petrie would be great beside Porter, much better than he was beside Adelman.

Lafayette Lever
Don’t get me wrong, TP is the better Trail Blazer PG. But Mr. Lever had an incredible career when he went to the Nuggets, and in this excercise I gotta assemble the best rotation…
With Geoff Petrie at SG, and Lafayette at PG… I am stacked!

hmmmmm....
This is not a no-brainer for me, the Fat Lever that played for the Nuggets was outstanding! He was a good defender, a superb rebounder for his size, and knew how to put the ball in the bucket. He is one of 3 guys to put up 15pts, 15rbs, and 15asts in a playoff game, the others are Kidd, and Wilt the stilt. I was ready to pick him until I noticed he wasn’t much of a 3 pt shooter and was average at the free throw line. Those are two things I need from my pg, so i got to go Porter on this one. The Roy/Porter back court is super popular, but I think there is good reason for it.
ps A question for Dave, are you going to share who you would pick when it’s all said and done????
RUDY > MJ
I love Terry Porter and Rod Strickland was very good but
I am picking Fat Lever. When you play me you will know why.
I'm going with Lightening Rod...
One of the very few PGs ever who was a legitimate 20/10 threat.

He beats the competition in almost every category, although I must say Strickland had a better career than I remember (almost 8000 assists?), maybe because he played for so many teams. TP was a great outside shooter, that’s something I need to stretch the defense for my frontcourt. Not an amazing rebounder, but not bad either and I have other guys to handle that on my team.
And I must say: Where is my dream PG Sergio? Just kidding…
Oden (7’0)
Lucas (6’9)
Kiki (6’8)
Roy (6’6)

I have both!
Nyah, nyah, nyah!
I don’t have Roy’s penetration, but Petrie, Kiki, and Porter can all penetrate, and nobody has a shooting team like I’ve got. Just try to collapse on Oden. I dare you!
Other people don't have as much practice at being wrong as I do -- HT, timbo
Good srtategy.
Somehow I’d missed Kiki in your line-up. You’re right, Kiki and Porter were excellent penetrators, but Roy is better that Petrie was and is so much better at involving his teammates. Of course Petrie could shoot lights-out.
I’d consider you to be formidable competition to my team (Walton, Buck, Kiki, Roy and Porter), but Oden?!!! Seriously? Well, he’s done nothing in the NBA at this point in time when we are choosing our teams. So you lose.
I remember telling him how impressed I was with a player during summer league. In Avery's unique voice, he replied, "Marc, it's summer league." I
I went for a dynasty
Walton would only be good for maybe two championships, because of injuries. Sabonis the same, because he was so old when he came over.
You’ll win this year with your lineup, I’ll give you that.
But then I’ll win the next 8 championships.
And I wanted Oden because I knew from the beginning I was going Porter, Petrie, and Vandeweghe to spread the floor, and I wanted the dominant defender inside. Oden may never be the passer or even the scorer that Walton was/could have been, but he is going to block and intimidate far more shots. Book it.
Other people don't have as much practice at being wrong as I do -- HT, timbo
How will you stop anyone?
Porter was a smart defender and I have no idea how good Petrie was but with Kiki out there, he might score 30, but so will his man.
PTB Liberation Day - 2/10/04
Petrie was decent
Not great, but decent.
I’ve got Lucas and Oden in the lane. Kiki will only really get hurt badly when he’s up against a great shooter.
How will anyone stop me at any position? I can spread the floor, great penetrators, great shooters (even Luke was a great mid-range shooter), good passers, inside threats in both big men. We’ll score 150 a game with Kiki, Porter, and Petrie popping 3 pointers and running the break. And we’ve got three great defenders, one decent defender, and Kiki.
We used to say in my track days that you could hide one dead horse in a mile relay, but you can’t hide two (since I’m talking “mile” relay, you know I’m old). It applies to basketball, too. You can get away with one bad defender if you have a team full of good defenders—a good defensive scheme will help cover up his weaknesses. The exception is if your center can’t defend, and then you might have big trouble.
Other people don't have as much practice at being wrong as I do -- HT, timbo
I liked Kiki
But there was a reason that Kersey eventually became the man at the SF position. He out hustled and out ran everyone he played against every night. He would do that to Kiki if our teams matched up. Kiki would score 25-30 pts and have 0 rebounds, 0 blocked shots, 0 steals and 0 defensive stops. Kersey would have 16-20 fastbreak points by himself just beating Kiki down the floor every possession.
Blazers beat the Blazers 115-107.
PTB Liberation Day - 2/10/04
Yep
I actually liked Jerome better, and think he was better for the Blazers. But neither of them got to play with an Oden/Lucas front line, and I think with a dominant inside threat on both offense and defense, it makes Kiki’s offense even better and helps with his defensive deficiencies.
In other words, I think Jerome was a better all-round player, but for the role I want my SF to play with Oden and Lucas, Kiki is better.
Same reason I took Petrie over Roy. All-round, I expect Roy to be better than Petrie was, but with a dominant big man, I’ll take the great pure shooter.
Other people don't have as much practice at being wrong as I do -- HT, timbo

Easy as Porter Pie
Porter and again I don’t really feel the need for discussion.
However, I need 3pt shooting and Porter provides some of that.
Oden
Lucas (back-up)
Kersey
Roy
Porter
I’ll want Aldridge in that mix as my starter. If we were only worried about stats, I’d think about Rasheed instead as he had some nice 3pt shooting in his later years.
Irony is that Lucas was probably more of a “head case” than Rasheed from everything I’ve been reading. The only real difference is that he was a winner.

Strickland
My lineup needs more assists than Porter or Lever can provide. Strickland was the best assist guy in this group, and I would argue the best at penetrating. I’ll miss Porter’s outside shot, but I’ve got scorers, and Rod is no slouch.
C – Sabonis
PF – Lucas

You need to hire Rick Adelman as your coach for that unit to keep Strickland and somewhat Lucas in check ;-)

So far this is the easiest. Actually I was a big fan of Lever, and Strickland in his prime was an amazing talent on the court, actually in some ways didn’t get the respect I think he deserved. I remember Stricklands matchups against Payton and they were classic, with often Strickland getting the edge and or it being a draw. BUT Porter was everything. Porter brings the stats and the intangibles. No, with a nod to Lever and Strickland both I think often under appreciated by many Blazer fans, it still HAS to be Porter.

I need a guy who will flat out take the ball and make something happen. Roy will provide clutch shooting/scoring, Kiki is that outside threat, Lucas will rebound/defend, and Walton will score/rebound/defend/pass.
Fat Lever
Brandon Roy
Kiki Vandeweigh
Maurice Lucas
Bill Walton
I like your team...
Brandon might be more of a scorer on that team while Lever would control the ball more. I have Kersey though and he would eat Kiki up all over the floor. Kiki played an entire game as a SF with 0 rebounds. He had to be running away from the ball to not get 1 rebound at SF.

My gut was right
I immediately assumed I’d be taking Porter when this series started, but I decided to look at the career stats for Fat and Rod. Both were great, but I liked Porter’s numbers just a little better. More importantly, though, I would have chosen Porter over Strickland, having seen plenty of both. I never really saw Lever, but Porter was such a great player/leader that I had to choose him anyway.
C Walton
PF Lucas
SF Kersey
SG Roy
PG Porter
Gotta take Terry
C- Walton (Great defender and rebounder, won’t need to score a lot because…)
PF – Lucas (Score in the post, takes pressure off walton, and throws a mean right hook)
SF – Kersey (Won’t demand the ball, great energy, hustle guy, athletic, good defender)
SG – Roy (excellent 2-position player, can move to point occasionally, slasher)
PG – Porter (3-point shooter, takes advantage of Roy handling the ball, defender, leader)

There’s 2 big combo-guards, Defense and rebounding on the interior, and a lights-out shooter/ scorer whose defensive liabilities are cancelled out by big GO.

Man I want Fat Lever
But I have to go with TP. Strickland, I just never warmed up to him. I had reservations when he came and he was good, I just never could put him on a team like this.
TP wins on 3pt shooting. If I had taken Petrie or Kiki, I would have gone with Fat just to go against conventional wisdom and because my heart still aches that they traded him and not Darnell in the Kiki trade. Ramsay really like Darnell and I could never figure that out.
Starters – Walton, Lucas, Kersey, Roy, Porter. I like the combination of rebounding, defense, toughness, hustle, BBIQ, and scoring. A little short on outside shooting but I am banking on Roy improving his catch and shoot this summer and Kersey improved as a shooter as his career went on and Lucas could hit consistently from 18’ so I think I am OK if I can get a gunner off the bench.
PTB Liberation Day - 2/10/04
Porter
I have to take him to spread the floor for my squad:
Oden
Lucas
Kersey
Roy
Porter
Aint nothin to it!
Porter Homer
I love TP and have to include him in my starting 5. Lever had a great career and would no doubt be valuable, but I don’t need the rebounding so much with my monster front line. Strickland was an underrated point guard, but I believe his best days were in front of his Blazer career (in NY) and plus; I don’t want my point guard dealing with a hangover when we make it the playoffs. Though a backcourt of TP and Roy is somewhat replicating in their ball handling preferences, I’m banking on the fact that both players will be able to adapt a little and share the ball.
Porter
This was tougher than I was thinking, but this is too scary:
Porter
Roy
Kiki
Lucas
Oden
OUCH!
