Breaking News about the upcoming season

So I was in the Verizon store yesterday and who should be in line right in front of me?  None other than KP himself.  He was conversing about the upcoming season with the clerk, but I can't hear much.  Once it was my turn, I ask what they talked about...

Apparently KP told him the schedule was released to the team.  According to the clerk, KP said something like 18 of the first 21 games were on the road.  Opening night (didn't know if it was home or away) would be against the L*kers.  Could this be true?  18 of 21 on the road would be rough, but make for a nice March and April.  What are your thoughts?

Can't wait to find out the validity of what I heard.

no way

there is no way that 18 of our first 21 games are on the road, that would be insane. That’s not gonna happen, I can guarantee that!

How many road games out of the first 21 would be okay?

I’m sure the Blazers are going to be one of the biggest draws in the league now that Oden is joining them and they are predicted to make the playoffs this season, so it wouldn’t surprise me if a lot of their road games come early, but 18 out of 21? How would that even work? Six-game roadie followed by one home game, rinse and repeat two times. That would crush their spirit.

Who are the data miners around here? One of them should research the NBA regular-season records for each team for the last 25 years and see who has had the worst season-opening schedule.

Asked his specialty in the kitchen, Oden paused and said, "Hamburger Helper and tuna fish."

But the "L@kers on opening night" plot is thickening. I heard that rumor also from a guy working for TNT

And then there was the “a lot of hate early in the season” comment on Courtside.

all told though

I hope thats the case, I doubt those are exact numbers, people get excited and you did get third hand regardless of you proximity. I would LOVE to get a huge road trip out of the way early in the season, before other teams have had the chance to get there conditioning up( we are coming in even earlier this year then last) and we just might steal some wins when the coming in early advantage will be more useful

I have heard that it will be PDX @ L*

from two other places so there are now 3 points that we can make a line with, so I am inclined to think that it is true.

I have been waiting for last weeks Courtside MP3 to come up but have been unable to find it on trailblazers.com or 955.com. Apparently Rice said that for the opener, Blazer fans will have to bring the hate and that excludes 99% of the teams of the NBA.

I was SOOOOO hoping it would be here as that would be the absolute most difficult ticket to get in the past 10 years or so, the debut of Oden, Fernandez and Bayless against the WC champion, at OUR HOUSE?? I would give my kidneys for a seat there.

I have heard PDX at L* is on Oct 28th and it should be a nationally televised game on TNT or ESPN as Oct 28th is muy early for a game of that magnitude, so those who do not have CSN fear not. At least that is my guess.

I'm finding our broadcasters more and more distasteful

They were actively making fun of Darius Miles and Sebastian Telfair, both of whom they were apologists for when they were Blazers. These guys are absolute mouthpieces for the orginization, never saying anything bad about a Blazer, then turning on them and ripping them as soon as they leave.

which explains why they are Blazer apologists.

I fully agree.

It does not explain the need to bash former Blazers. The stuff they were saying about Telfair and Miles was totally uncalled for.

I dont know man...

It probably was unnecessary, especially when Rice said he hoped Miles got injured or whatever it was. But maybe Telfair and Miles were A-holes to them and the only reason they didn’t say this kind of thing before was because their job is to make blazers players look good, despite their personal opinions. Its not like they rip every former blazer for the fun of it…

Good point, snake

If I’m Jarrett Jack, I’m wondering when my turn is coming up. If I’m the current crop of Blazers, I’m wondering what the Blazer broadcasters really think of me. Seems like they could have at least congratulated Telfair on his new contract.

yep

Rice was saying he hopes that if Miles gets signed he gets beat up on in training camp… he was basically rooting him to get hurt worse so the Blazers could keep the cap space. I found it disrespectful.

Oh stop it

I used to have a close friend who was a quadraplegic. It wasn’t funny what happened to him, and it was often a drag to deal with. He would laugh if I greeted him with something like, “You look like hell, but your wheelchair looks really good today.” He’d reply with, “I’m really looking forward to running over your foot today.” We both knew that was his way, and the only healthy way, to deal with it, because what else are you gonna do, cry and moan the rest of your life? If I’d ever stopped myself mid-joke because of pity, he probably would have run over my foot. Again.

18 out of 21 games on the road to start the season would not be a great way to

start out. Ideally, I’d like to see our guys gain some confidence early in the season with a fair share of wins. Playing that much on the road to begin the season, I fear, would do the opposite.

by JasonT on Aug 3, 2008 4:07 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'd rather have 18 out of 21 to start the year

Than finish the year, that’s for sure. If we had the opposite down the stretch, now matter how far out we might be from the 8th seed I’d like our odds playing 18 our of 21 at home.

Of course, this is either a fakey story or an exaggeration by the worker or by KP or by nobody.

I love the news in the summer!

Penn wasn’t there

BTW I ordered the breakfast sampler. It is supposed to come with sausage, bacon, ham, eggs, hash browns, and pancakes. I don’t like eggs, so I asked them to hold the eggs. Waiter asks if i would like sausage instead and I said yes. I ended up with Hashbrowns, Pancakes, and 12 links of sausage. That is a lot of sausage…...

hard to believe

in fact I don’t think there will EVER be a stretch of 18 road games in 21 games during any point in the season. Not to mention in the beginning of the season.

Also imagine what kind of public outcry it’s gonna create among Blazers fans in Portland – 21 games (over a month!) gone by and we only get to watch THREE of them in Rose Garden? No friggin’ way!!

Magic (Howard) will host Hornets (Paul) on Christmas Day in nationally televised game

More and more details about the schedule are coming through. Here are some things I found out on the Interwebs at neworleans.com about the Hornets. Apparently there are no or fewer snitches on the Blazers organization and media reporting about them:

Hornets open on road at Golden State and then at Phoenix.

Home Opener is November 1st against Cleveland.

Nov. 12th at home vs Lakers

Dec. 23rd at home vs Lakers

Feb. 11th at home vs Boston

Dec. 26th at home vs Houston

Regular season finale will be a Sunday afternoon game against Dallas.

He wouldn't.

You know the clerk is most likely a college student who was asking him questions about the upcoming season. I’m sure 18 out of 21 games was a sarcastic comment i am sure with all the rules the NBA has about crap like that he probably didn’t really tell the clerk the actual schedule. Everyone needs to relax i know it has been a long hot summer but we will just have to wait for the actual schedule to come out.

by RipCityRoyCity on Aug 4, 2008 12:50 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And who is the centerpiece of all problems relating to the schedule without admitting it? You guessed it: OKC

NewsOK.com, July 28, 2008, Mike Baldwin:
Matt Winick spends six months compiling the NBA schedule. Winick juggles games around concerts, the NHL, a rodeo or a circus. This season, he must work around Oklahoma City hosting the Big 12 men’s and women’s basketball tournaments at the Ford Center in March.

“We have 1,230 games," said Winick, the NBA’s vice president of operations who has drawn up NBA schedules for 24 years. “It’s like a puzzle with 1,230 pieces. They all have to fit. It’s extremely complicated. At times during the process it can be frustrating." Winick starts in February. Teams supply at least 50 to 60 available dates. Six months later, the final schedule is completed. Because of the Sonics’ uncertain home base, Winick worked with two different schedules the first five months, one for Seattle and one for Oklahoma City. The uncertainty ended July 2 when team chairman Clay Bennett announced the Sonics were relocating to Oklahoma City. The NBA schedule traditionally is announced the first week of August. Winick said he’s about “three or four days behind" his usual pace.[...]

Did Canzano apply some pressure..

I go back and forth about him, but that interview with that Comcast guy was uncomfortable. And it should have been. Canzano made him squirm.

If you didn’t hear it, Canzano asked what viewers were supposed to do if they had no way of getting Comcast. The rep kept touting all the programming that Comcast has now. Canzano shot back and shot him down. How can a viewer get the new programming when they can’t get Comcast, he asked. It was beautiful.

I have Comcast and don’t really have a dog in the fight (can I say that now after Vick’s situation?). But I think Comcast has just been unfair in the whole thing.
