ESPN Rankings
I know everyone was jubilated by our over-ranking on USA Today (which had has ranked 5th in the league before next season). ESPN released their rankings today and it arguably is more realistic, placing lower expectations on our group of youngsta's.

From fifth in The League to 8th in the West is a pretty big jump. One thing that remains the same is that either way we are predicted to make the playoffs. This may not come as a surprise to most of us since we would all like to see our guys there. After all, LAST YEAR they went a very respectable 41-41 in arguably one of the NBA's toughest conferences in history. We should expect an improvement even if we had the exact same team from last year--you know--that one with the two JJs that're gone now. But with the fresh additions of Oden, Bayless, and Rudy, one could reasonably expect that--chemistry issues aside--our talent increasing will lead to our wins increasing--eventually. Where how long is unknown, we DO expect greatness--at least I do--eventually.
From this standpoint, I would have to argue that I see the Blazers winning more than just 3 games on top of their win total from last season. With the same young group growing from last season I would expect a 3 game improvement. With THIS group, I would expect at least a 5 game improvement (Oden alone should account for this many games if healthy). Personally, I'm HOPING (or dreaming depending on your interpretation) for an improvement of TEN games, giving us a 51-31 record for next season.
So this all of course just begs the question:

5th overall is too high...
for sure.
Eighth in the West is more realistic… but I still think we get 50 wins (or darn close).

Total Joke
ESPN is so pathetic. Talk about talking the safe road on predictions. I mean forget about in what place they have the blazers (having Dallas in front of blazers in laughable) but having the Blazers with only a THREE GAME IMPROVEMENT! Do they realize that last year we had a nine game improvement when we added no one, so this year we add three lottery picks, two pretty much top 5 picks and we only improve by three games? Come on give me a break, and these guys are suppose to be freaking professional analyst?

It was an average....
Maybe there are some people who just hate the Blazers and don’t think they will do well this year. I don’t understand it either, but it’s a crazy, messed up world we are living in. First, the Blazers, next new born babies and rainbows.
Seriously though, if just a couple of guys in that 25 man poll undervalued the Blazers to the tune of under 40 wins (don’t ask me how) and most of the rest were moderate in their predictions, well there you are. I like it when ESPN displays how each of their analysts voted, so you can see if it’s consensus or an average of extremes.

3 year projections....
2008-09 – 48 wins 7th or 8th seed
2009-10 – 54 wins 3rd or 4th seed (5% chance at an appearance in the finals)
2010-11 – 60 wins near the top (Championship window officially opens) – Hopefully, this is an 8-year window…

Hey, 44-38 and narrowly making the playoffs was my prediction going through the schedule game by game
Not that ESPN’s experts are always correct, but I’ll go with their committee of 25 over USA Today’s committee of 1.

I think its somewhere in the middle.
I don’t think we finish the season with the 5th best record overall, no way. But I do think we get a better seeding in the west than 8th this year, I really do. Depending on how tight the west is, with the 50 wins I think we’ll get, I think we can get a 6th or even 5th seed.

That's exactly the seed I'd predict...
though I’d expect us to be just shy of 50 wins. 5th or 6th in the West seems to be the most realistic spot. That is line with a 5-6 game win improvement over last year for a 46-47 games won regular season. Looking at ESPN predictions, that record correspond to a 5-6 seed in the west. Conveniently this vote is squarely between the choices in the poll.

If you're right...
then the playoff might go like this:
Round 1:
L*akers def. Mavs 4-1
Hornets def. Suns 4-2
Blazers def. Jazz 4-3 (4-2 more likely perhaps)
Spurs def. Rockets 4-3
Round 2:
L*akers def. Spurs 4-2
Blazers def. Hornets 4-3
Western Conference Finals:
Blazers def. L*akers 4-3
Finals:
Blazers def. Celtics 4-3
Prediction: Blazers are first team to win NBA Championship after winning 4 straight game 7’s. Their 28 games played in the playoffs will be a playoff record, and what’s more? They never had the home court advantage the entire playoffs. So here’s to a 110 games in 08-09!

Last year after GO went down, everyone
was predicting a poor season. A couple
of us were on record predicting a 40-42
win season. Does that make me a homer,
or just a good evaluator of talent. 30 +
years as a Blazermaniac, for sure.
If we stay healthy, we have a chance to

Here is ESPN's top 8 in the west.
1. LA Lakers
2. NO Hornets
3. Hou Rockets
4. Utah Jazz
5. SA Spurs
6. PHX Suns
7. DAL Mavs
8. PDX Blazers
Personally I think they have made a few mistakes, like Houston at #3, when will the “experts” stop predicting the Rockets will break out and get out of the 1st round. Second, the Mavs will fall much harder than they are predicting, there record was only 16-14 with Jason Kidd and now he is a year older and slower. The same can be said of the Suns with Shaq.

I think their ranking is pretty much dead on if everybody is healthy as the rosters stand
No arguing with improved Lakers and Hornets at the top, in whatever order. The Rockets were good last season, and that was before adding Artest and Yao having a long injury. Utah hasn’t done anything spectacular in the off-season but should be solid again. San Antonio is showing its age, but still good. Phoenix increased their performance late in the season with Shaq, they added another solid big man for defense while he sits, and should have maybe their last good season before they really decline. The Mavs will be better than late last season when they narrowly gave up a lot of close games, with a full training camp with Kidd under their belt and two solid additions to the bench (still was a bad trade). And the Blazers should be better than the Clippers (would rank them slightly higher than ESPN), Nuggets (bad bad defense) and Warriors.

I know they’ve had the pundits predict greatness for a few years now, but if Yao can stay healthy I really see Artest helping them. Plus Scola now has a NBA year under his belt, maybe McGrady can stay healthy too…

My earlier comment would have been better posted here
Houston is likely the only team that would give us consistent fits. Here’s why: Roy has a hard time against Artest. We could not guard McGrady at SF last year. They just happen to have their strongest positions offensively aligned with our biggest hole and have their strongest defensive position that stymies our playmaker. No other team in the league can do this except possibly the aging Celts.

maybee im wrong
but i think that reasoning only really stands if coaching adn chemistry have little to nothing to do with the sussess of a team. The suns are allready putting in work and seem excited about their prospects and new coach, and it was widly speculated that avery didnt use kidd the right way. If porter can get amari to go from bad to average, play shaqs “i hate koby” heart strings, and get the team cohesive, they have a pretty formidable group. they’re not dead yet. the mavs have a pasionate if womewhat misguided owner, who wants to do well, im sure that thier new coach wont be so high on his hourse(being new and all) that hell just neglect jasons kidds abilities. Regardless of how old he is, if an offence is DISIGNED with his skill set in mind, Dallas will put out a fromidable effort again this year. We talk about Kevin retooling, like nobody else can.

Some good matchups.
-dallas

-utah-we been able to beat these teams on a consistant basis last year.
Tough matchups
Hornets-we split with them last year, but they will be hard in the playoffs
Suns-we have really struggled against them, but they are getting old, and have struggled in the playoffs with their run n gun.
Hard matchups
-Houston-we couldnt beat houston last year, now they add broys criptonite
-San Antonio-a solid defensive team who we cant seem to beat, and allways seem to get far in the playoffs

Power Rankings vs. Pre-Season Predictions
If ESPN was merely publishing their initial Power Rankings, I’d give them a pass here. But what they gave us was their Pre-Season Predictions. In that case, their ranking is preposterous.
I’m actually somewhat astonished to read some of the previous comments that agree with ESPN’s rankings that have the Blazers finishing 8th in the West and with 44 wins.
Did anyone else notice that the comments section on the Blazers failed to mention a certain person named Rudy?
I’m trying hard to take off my homer hat here and look at things objectively. Does any think that the addtion of Greg, Rudy and Jerryd, all of whom have never played one minute of NBA basketball, but in all other respects have shown strong evidence of being able to make immediate positive contributions to the team, will only account for 3 more wins than last year?
Think of our improvement last year over the prior season. Granted, there is some element of diminishing returns when improving toward a fixed upper limit (82 games), which makes it harder to improve your win total the higher you go.
But really? Only 3 more wins than last year?
What specific things happened last year that made a major improvement to the win total? Here are the things I can think of in order prominence:
1. The emergence of running the offense thru Brandon and LMA (the prior year was Zbo)
2. Outlaw breaking out
3. The addition of James Jones
4. The addition of Steve Blake
5. The emergence of good team chemistry (this might be higher on the list, but it’s not very specific and hard to quantify)
6. Generally, other players maturing and getting incrementally better (Martell and Jack)
7. Channing doing some good things
(I’m sure I’m missing something obvious, but that is what I can think of right now).
OK, now throw in the fact that we lost our team leader in Points and Rebounds from the prior season, Zbo. Taken by itself that would have a negative impact on wins, but of course it allowed some of the things on the prior list to happen (especially 1 and 5). So I won’t give the losing Zbo argument must weight in saying that it was a significant event.
Now, in that light ponder what is likely to happen in this coming season.
1. Oden ?
2. Rudy ?
3. Jerryd ?
4. Improvements (Martell and Channing are two in particular that I’m looking for)
5. More depth (Joel especially)
And there are also things we’ve lost (Jack and James Jones).
If you fill in those 3 question marks above with the best evidence available and taking into account any other , how many more or less wins do you think the Blazers will have?
In this scenario, I’m looking at the Blazers in a vacum. I’m not taking into account what other teams in the NBA have done, how the schedule may be different, or anything else I can’t predict (injuries, etc). I understand the risks of doing the analysis like this, but I’m trying to isolate some things and have an honest debate about them.
Here’s my point… Those of you who think Portland will win 44 games and finish 8th in the West are making these assumptions:
1. Greg will be as good or slightly better than Joel was last year.
2. Rudy will be the same as James Jones was last year (and remember James only played 58 games, and arguable was hampered in some of those by injury and was ineffective).
3. Jerryd will be the same as Jarrett was last year.
4. There will be no improvement in other areas (Martell, Channing, Blake, team chemistry, etc.)
Basically, Greg wins us three more games and everything else stays the same.
Are the external factors (injuries and other teams) I’m ignoring that significant, or are these the assumptions that you are making?

under-promise and over-perform
I love sneaking up on people and doing better than what everybody thinks.
But I just think it’s ridiculous how wrong “experts” can be when there job is to be right. If a hedge fund manager thinks a certain index will rise 10% this year, he should say that because it’s his job and he shouldn’t say it’s going to be flat because that’s the safe thing to do. That’s a bad comparison because financial markets are much harder to predict than the NBA, but you see what I’m saying?

Excellent post
I’d like to play a little devil’s advocate if I may…..
Some reasons why only a small increase in wins is more likely than a big increase…….
1. Opposing teams know to bring their A game when they play us, unlike the first half of last year when we started off 5-12 and looked nothing like a playoff contender. We probably caught a few teams off guard and won games we otherwise wouldn’t have. (this seems like half external, half internal)
2. Our players aren’t perfect cogs that can be swapped in and out. We have to rebuild chemistry and Nate has to figure out how to best use all of his players, not only on their own, but within different lineups and against different teams.
3. Truth is, Rudy, Oden and Bayless haven’t played a single minute yet. Yes, they’ve all looked very impressive at times, but so have a lot of guys coming into the league.

I think we won a lot of close games last year, something like (factcheck!) 12-5 in games decided by overtime or less than 3 pts. Close games are usually decided by luck. A chance rebound or a good bounce. So, chances are we would win less of those games this year.

If I recall correctly
The Blazers have only 11 back-to-back games; for the sake of comparison, LAL have something like 18. So, I think that when you consider scheduling, that may translate into a couple of additional wins.
Their stiffest challenge will be to win on the road. Although the additions to this year’s roster are a significant improvement, they’re all young players. So, I’m not sure if they can improve their road record significantly, because winning on the road consistently has a lot to do with experience.

not so much experience....
its more poise……………..not getting flusterd………digging inside yourself to find energy, cuz the crowd cant provid it for you….
some guys thrive on the road……….i remember an interview where hakeem said he loved it. Being in some one elses stadium, making a play where the whole crowd has to tilt their head back, exhale and go woooh….its like throwing a blow……I think Oden could be that way if he’s able to own the middle like i think he can……….
His blocked shots are gonna take the air out of crowds

Are you implying
that what the Blazers lack is poise?
And you figure that Oden will magically endow every other player with poise, because of his defensive impact? I know that defensive plays can energize a team and deflate the opposition; but poise and energy are two different concepts. And if you don’t have poise, all the energy in the world won’t help you score points under pressure; you just waste possessions.
Roy is exceptional because he already plays with a lot of poise; but I’d always assumed that most players acquired poise through experience. And, despite his poise, Roy is shooting 43% on the road.

East vs West
Last year the Western conference teams’ combined record against Eastern conference teams was 259-191. Next year ESPN is predicting an East-West record of 229-221. While some Eastern teams can expect to be stronger next year than they were last year, that is still a pretty big jump. I think ESPN is underestimating many of the Western teams, and I would be surprised if the balance of power evened out that much next year.

What are you talking about pal
Elton Brand signed with Philly, bub. Keep up with the NBA and maybe you’d know why the balance of power has shifted over to the East. And Brevin Knight is on Utah now, which is East also, in relation to Portland.
Also, D’Antoni coaches the Knickerbockers now. Those misunderstood rascals just needed the right coach to know how to play them. We’re gonna see a fleet footed, graceful Curry this year led by the multipronged selfless playmaking of Nate Robinson and Jamal Crawford.
It’s going to take 60 wins to make the playoffs in the East. Tab it.

My sarcasm dector exploded
Anyone living east of Morty should head indoors to protect yourself from the fallout as the prevailing winds will disperse potentially harmful levels of sarcasm across much of the United States.

And hip-waders.
Asked his specialty in the kitchen, Oden paused and said, "Hamburger Helper and tuna fish."

Exactly... ESPN is based in Bristol, not Burbank
That company has always been east coast biased. I mean, they’ve made in road with Neil Everett and the College Gameday Crew liking Eugene a lot, but overall it’s blatently obvious.
They’ve got to prop up those weak Eastern Conf. teams pre-season so that their loser fans will tune into the games ESPN has paid a fortune for the rights to.

8th in West is realistic. With potential.
I think 8th in the west is realistic. We have potential to do great things. Teams and " experts " slept on us and we got 41 wins. 41 wins! CBSSPORTS.COM ‘s hoops preview ( which by the way made great reading material as I was in the hospital nearly a year ago. And thanks dad for the mag ) predicted we’d be as bad as the Sonics were. SLAM said we’d be about the same. We opened eyes. We’ll continue. I think we are 8th seeded material. 1st round of the playoffs with upset potential. 5th in the League? Not there yet. Keep the core together it can happen in due time. Sure we missed the playoffs, but teams will be nuts to take us lightly after the surprising 41 wins and 13 game winning streak of last year. The pressure is on to prove.

how resilient are the PTB?
the early season schedule is rough and how the team responds to the early season adversity could set the tone for the entire season. I cant see with the current schedule being #5 after the first 15 games.
Then again, things might just click and we ride the tsunami.

I personally do not always approve of the things my cat wants posted but have to wonder after that #5 ranking if frankly we havent earned it.

8th for sure
Patience, grasshoppers. The championships will come soon. This is the year of the first-round exit.
PS everyone here seems to be sleeping on the Suns. Unless Nash breaks down this year they are going to be way better than people think. I mean, now they’re actually going to play defense.
