Greg Oden
I went to Buffalo Wild Wings tonight in downtown to watch the Oregon State football game with some buddies and around halftime, Greg Oden walks in and sits next to our table. He was very nonchalant and i almost had to look like three times to make sure it was him. Nobody really bugged him he just ate some wings with a broad he brought with him. Let me just say he is the biggest human being i have ever seen personally.

very cool!
I have yet to have a Blazer encounter outside the Rose Garden… I’ve lived here most my life… even downtown for the past 5 years… you’d think the odds were in my favor. Someday…

Re: I have yet to have a Blazer encounter outside the Rose Garden
I went into a burger place one time and Bill Walton was sitting at one end of a booth. And his feet were sticking two feet out the other end.
(Also met Rick Roberson. Nice guy.)

You had to look three times?
Who is Oden’s body double? Hmmm…7-feet tall, hugely muscular, face like an ent…I would think he’d be the single most unmistakable person in the state.

I'm trying to picture that conversation
Dude, is that Greg Oden?
Where?!?
Over there, walking towards that booth with that girl.
Naw. That’s Barney Schleckelman. Lives three doors down in my apartment complex. He’s in here all the time.
He’s HUGE! Does he play basketball?
Nope. He’s a librarian at the elementary school.
No kidding?
Yeah. All the kids get their books back on time. Never been a single late return.
I bet not…

My wife and I argued one time
at the Greek Cuisina. Charles Barkley, Marcus Allen and a couple of others were there, hanging out after the pro-am. The girls were all giddy and saying, “isn’t that somebody, an athlete or something,” and me and my buddy’s, drunk mind you, were telling them that just because a person is tall and black, doesn’t mean their an athlete. Of course, in this instance, we were wrong.
Barkley’s a lot smaller than you’d think. I swear he was about 6’4".

That was my thought too
They report he is so big you can’t see his defender when he is backing him down, but apparently looks small enough to make you think “hey, is that Greg Oden the basketball player”?

He's all legs
Maybe his torso is incredibly short and he just has monstrously long legs.
So sitting down, he looks like a normal dude. Only when standing does his height reveal itself.

That's what I was thinking
Some people you don’t have to squint and think real hard about whether they are who you think they are,
I’d hope Greg Oden is one of them. If you know someone else who looks like Oden, I would like to put him in a Blazers jersey.

My only encounter with any current Blazer was Aldrige at the airport.
He was nice enough to take pictures and sign autographs. Unfortunately I had not a pen, paper or camera with me except my phone with a crummy camera on it. Even though he was in a rush he still took time to get everyone their photo or autograph, cool guy.

That was before his brief stint as a Blazer. He is notted ripped by any standard but he sure was tall. Nobody should mistake a guy that tall (of course the spike flat-top is hard to disguise too).

I've posted this before...
1978 was a banner year for meeting Blazers. I scored the trifecta:
- I knocked over Herm Gilliam’s fence by accident (he was very nice about it)
- I met Bobby Gross (Guest of Honor) at the Cedar Mill Pathway Opening ceremony
- I ran into Maurice Lucas at the gym in his condominium
Incidentally, Luke owned a stylin’ pink tuxedo in 1978.

About a week ago I brought some wings from there up to my room. I ate one and my tongue started burning like crazy.
I ran down stairs in pain and just let the faucet run water along my mouth. I did that for about 20 minutes and it still hurt a lot afterwards. I washed my hands and when I rubbed my eye the spice managed to burn my eyes and nose. I hope Greg didn’t get the spicy wings, they are dangerous.

Amen.
Dave has my take exactly. Oden would be a hard many to mistake in any crowd, let alone a bar.
The human side is that people respected his privacy, which is a huge plus in Portland. They actually let him have private time in public places with friends. How many cities exist where these athletes can keep some normality in their lives?

Autographs?
I have never understood the whole autograph thing – oh sure I went crazy for Billy Jack Haynes signature when I was 10 and in love with Ptown wrestiling – but as an adult its a little odd to me. I can see giving some words of hope and admiration for a person – and I would love to see some Blazers my self – but its just their name. I guess some might want to prove they met someone but shouldnt your word do it – how hard would it to be to forge a signature?

M. Lucas
i ran into Maurice Lucas when the SpruceGoose came to McMinnville um … a long time ago. All I had was a $1 bill. He took it from me and said, “thanks kid.” then didn’t give it back. When I protested, he smiled and signed it and gave it to me again. I think I lost it or spent it on baseball cards or whatever a kid does with his money.

Three Blazer encounters
In the early 90’s, I was working at a car dealership (For a whole month…hated it) and in walks Drexler and Robert Pack. Apparently, Toyota provided Drexler with a brand new car every year, and he was there to drop off his old one, and pick up his new one.
I didn’t talk to him, although I had a chance. He was being swarmed by addoring car salesmen….and I did not want to add to that :)
A few years later I was selling computers @ Sears in Clackamas Town Center, and they had Maurice Lucas in for a few hours to sigh autographs and such. It was a fairly well advertised event, but there were not that many people there. Maurice was pretty cool….but he did keep asking ’Has any one announced on the loudspeaker that I am here?" and things like that. :)
Oh..and a few years after that, I was managing a Blockbuster in Sacramento. In walks Geoff Petrie. It was the summer that he took over as GM of the Kings. No one recognized him except me. He was in with a few other guys in suits I didn’t recognize. I didn’t talk to him much though. I really got a sense that we were ‘the help’ and beneath notice. One encounter does’t mean anything about what he is normally like, but it still left a bad taste in my mouth.
Now that I live in Eugene…I am guessing it will be a while before I see another Blazer outside of a game. Oh….while in Sac, I also had Dennis Rodman hit on my GF down there :) She didn’t know who he was….but even when I told her…she was still not impressed :)

Oden signed a Blazer Beanie Baby for me... sorta
talk about awkward.
Bought it for my little girl while at a game, and it was the first thing I could grab when I saw my opportunity… but I didn’t have the cajones to walk up to him and ask him to sign it, so I made my slightly cuter little sister do it for me.
Then my daughter got a hold of it and started drooling all over it, literally… she was only 8 months old at the time. Needless to say, the autograph smudged a tish. Since then I’ve placed it high atop a shelf where she won’t be able to reach it until she’s like 15.
Good times.

A few encounters
It’s always neat-o meeting a NBA person. I’ve met quite a few “normal” celebrities, and I don’t care about ’em. But players you admire bring out the kid in you.
Meeting Pritchard is at the top of the list, and sorta kinda watching a Blazer game with him. It was at a sports bar/restaurant near my old apartment here in LA. He was surprised to meet a Blazer fan there, especially one who recognized him on sight without him saying who he was. He was great, and I thanked him for everything and asked him to please stay in Portland. We love what he’s doing. (this was before he was officially the GM)
I kinda stalked him as he watched the Blazer game, watching his every move. I was just over his shoulder so he probably didn’t know I was there. He was very into the game. I heard every single word he said, every reaction to every play. VERY into the game.
I met Bill Walton at the airport about 7 years ago maybe (during one of our 1st round playoff exits). He was very skinny and pale. My mom said he looked like he had AIDs. I took a blood test and yup, AIDs. Full blown.
I also met Darius Miles right after his first of the bad knee surgeries, at the Chicago airport. He had no limp. I was happy he had no limp, so he could come back soon. He never played another game, I think.
When I was a kid I met Terry Porter, Ricky Adelman, and Jerome Kersey at a Canadian Football League exhibition game. Got their autographs on the ticket stub.
Met Michael Cooper when he talked to my HS basketball team (is it Mychel?).
I must’ve played against Ime Udoka in high school, but I don’t recall him or anything like that. We played around the same time, though, so I musta’…
I played against Michael Doleac in a pickup game in Portland, when I was early in high school. He was pretty crappy, I thought, but extremely tall.
Met Kermit Washington at some sporting event… can’t remember what…
Met Chris Dudley and Kevin Duckworth at seperate times at Target in… Beaverton, I think. Both times I was a kid (though I guess early high school for Dudley). Duckworth was very nice and Dudley gave me a nod.
I have never met Clyde Drexler, but everyone else in my family has :-( In fact, on one fateful day, I was in Spain while my sisters and my father were at the black tie event for the Street of Dreams outside of Portland. My youngest sister is obssessed with Joshua Jackson, I’m a big Drexler fan. That day I met Joshua Jackson in Spain, who I could care less about, and my sisters met Drexler at the Street of Dreams, someone they could care less about. The fates are cruel.
I’ve met Lisa Leslie a few times, and she was very nice. This was at Gold’s Gym in Venice.
Shaun Livingston and Kenny “The Jet” Smith were also met by me at the same place I met Kevin Pritchard. Kenny Smith’s wife was very pretty and he had a lot of cute kids.
What’s his face, used to play for Indy last played for the Warriors, white dude, balding… uhhhh… he lived in my old apartment building down here in LA. The hell is his name? AUSTIN CROSHERE. I had to Google it. I got his mail once (and Brian DePalma’s mail too, which was neat-o as well) and met him going in and out of the building. Never chatted.
So… yeah. I’m pretty special.
There might be more but I can’t remember ’em. True Hoop says to go to the Cheesecake Factory if you want to meet NBA players, so if anyone else craves meeting NBA players just go there.

My last name ain't Rockefeller!
I lived there for a year, but it was a one-bedroom apartment in a nice part of Santa Monica that also lets people sign flexible leases; so, lotsa people stayed for 1 month, 3 months, etc.
It was too expensive, too small, and now I live in a place not much further away that is more than twice as big but less expensive. I ain’t rich and when I am rich I am buying an island off the coast of Belize (they are cheaper there and still really nice) and watching Blazer games there when I’m not fending off Belizean pirates.
DePalma was there while doing post-production on the Black Dahlia movie of his, and Croshere is from Santa Monica and just lived there for the offseason. So, it was a place good for people like that who want a decent place to live but can’t enter a long lease.
Every apartment was a 1 bedroom or a studio, so the bigger question isn’t why I moved, but why did those multi-millionaires live there?
It was a great location, at least. In a area that is too touristy but it was fun, and I didn’t have to drive anywhere (which, obviously, is rare down here). Could walk to the grocery store and everything.

Joke. Good to hear that you live in style yet are still cost conscious - and these guys too
So Croshere probably won’t go broke very soon after his career like too many players. Somewhere I read a few days ago that Donyell Marshall used to go down to the cash phones in the hotel lobby to save the surcharge on his room phone, even after he had signed his first multi-million dollar contract extension. Maybe a little too much, but still…

When I venture out of the house, I am still just a text that says “Mortimer”. There is no actual physical body.
I am an idea, an ideal. I transcend actual being and just exist in your eyes and your brain.
There is no Mortimer outside of Blazers Edge.
The Pope was a nice guy, but had way too many Outlaw trade suggestions and thought Sergio was “really going to get his chance” this season. I was all, does this guy follow basketball?! I guess being a conduit to God doesn’t fill ya in on the current trade values of certain players.

Hmmm, I've met a few Blazers
In the early ’90’s I worked for a huge bank who sponsored the Blazers. The team had a big celebration for the 15th anniversary of the ’77 championship team. There was a lunch function for select bank employees and the ’77 team where Bill Walton sat at our little table. There was only one person between he and me so I got to have a little conversation with him. He was extremely charming, witty and engaging, and only drank warm water. No tea or coffee.
Joel Prz came into a local Irish pub after a home game a few years ago and sat right next to me at the bar and started watching the TV in front of us. We had some small talk. I was a musician in the band and he later came over and tipped us to play some Doors, which we did.
I’ve met Geoff Petrie and his wife Anne Marie numerous times. They are warm and wonderful people.
I met Rick Adleman on a plane to Sacramento once. Extremely nice man.
In the mid ’80’s I was a volunteer for home games at Memorial Coliseum and coiled TV cable after televised time-outs. I did this for half a season and sat underneath the backboard with the cameraman. That was fun!
