Should the Blazers retire #00?

I haven't seen this discussed before, so let's put it on the table.

There has been much discussion of whether or not the Blazers should retire Terry Porter's number 30 (despite the fact that the number was used by Rasheed Wallace after Porter's Portland career ended).   One might be able to make the case of the other mainstays of the 90-92 teams (Jerome Kersey--#25--presently worn by Trout; Buck Williams--#52--presently worn by Greg Oden).  But with the unfortunate demise of Kevin Duckworth--should his jersey (#00) be retired posthumously?  Nobody since has worn #00 for the Blazers.

Thoughts to consider:

* Duck participated in two All-Star games as a Blazer--the number--same as Terry Porter, Jim Paxson, Geoff Petrie, and Bill Walton.  Petrie and Walton are retired; the former for his role as a charter member of the franchise; the latter for leading the team to a title.  TP has often been discussed, as mentioned above, as a retirement candidate.  Paxson left the team on somewhat acrimonious terms, and never accomplished much postseason-wise while here.

* Sidney Wicks (4 All-Star appearances as a Blazer) never had his number retired.  Rasheed Wallace (3 appearances, 2 as a Blazer) probably won't, either, for obvious reasons.

* Other than Lucas and Walton; the guys who played for the '77 champions (Steele, Hollins, Twardzik, and Neal) all had less successful NBA careers.  Lionel Hollins comes closest.

* Duck did win the 1988 Most Improved award.

Were I to list the 20 greatest Blazers--Duck would probably be on that list.  (Petrie, Wicks, Walton, Lucas, Hollins, Kermit, Thompson, Paxson, Lever, Drexler, Porter, Duck, Williams, Kersey?, Uncle Cliffy, Sheed, Damon, Sabonis, Pippen, Roy).  Were I to limit myself to the Top Ten (Walton, Drexler, Wallace, Wicks, Petrie, Roy, Porter, Cliffy, Paxson, Hollins)--Duck misses the cut.

So--an appropriate honor?  Or sentimental nonsense?

Poll
Should the Blazers posthumously retire Kevin Duckworth's jersey (#00)?
Yes--he's good enough, and his role with the team was large enough, that he deserves the honor--regardless of recent events.
34 votes
Yes, but only as a memorial tribute. Given that the Blazers' criteria for retiring players is questionable (Lloyd Neal?), honoring the dead in this matter is appropriate.
44 votes
No. Duckworth isn't good enough, and having ones jersey retired isn't an honor one can earn by dying. A plaque or some other tribute would be nice, but everybody dies; being dead shouldn't get your jersey in the rafters.

I was thinking about this

While I think its a shame to use an unfortunate event like this as a means to bring a jersey retirement about, I do think that in Blazerland he deserves it. He was a great man off the court, and did a lot of the community, and on the court as you stated he was quite a talented player.

He wore number 00, which is a pretty uncommon number in pro sports, so it would take nothing away from future players, and it would be a great way for Blazers fans past and present to remember that Kevin Duckworth was everything that a Portland Trail Blazer should be. I for one would feel great about it if it were to happen.

When I get a little older, and I am taking my children to Blazer games I want to have them look up at the rafters and say “That #00, was a great man.”

no

We have retired several numbers that did not deserve it, so perhaps Duck does under Blazer criteria.

However, you can’t be retiring jersey numbers of every guy who becomes a moderate star. Retire Duck and you have to retire Kersey, Cliff and Buck (in addition to TP of course).

There are ways to honor Duck- the memorial service they are planning sounds like a beautiful way to do so. Retiring his jersey would not be the right move in my opinion.

Why not?

Who is to say we wont be retiring those players numbers down the line? Kersey I could see happening, Cliff probably not, same with Buck. But I dont get why we would ‘have’ to retire those players numbers if we retire Duck.. I think they would understand, and if they were to throw a fit over it, then shame on them.

I think they would embrace the idea, Duckworth was a person that all these guys loved, and I think its a great way to have his memory live on.

in my opinion

retiring jerseys should be a very rare thing.

If I were in charge, there would be 3 jerseys hanging in the Rose Garden rafters: 32, 22 and 77 (in honor of the entire title team). MAYBE I’d add 1 (for original team prez Glickman). Porter and Lucas would barely miss the cut for me.

I would LOVE to undo the ridiculousness of seeing Neal, Twardzik, and Steele up there. Obviously they also felt compelled to add Hollins to the mix a year or two back.

I think you got it right. I’d probably add Petrie to the list since he was the first blazer, rookie of the year, and the face of our franchise the first 6 seasons. I really like the idea of just doing ‘77’ for the whole team rather than honoring all the individuals who really shouldn’t have been.

Rule #1 of nitpicking is to get it right.

Luke deserves to be there

While his time as a Blazers was short; Walton doesn’t lead us to a ring without Maurice Lucas. History seems to remember him as the 77 team’s equivalent of a Brian Grant or a Buck Williams—a big burly enforcer who does the dirty work and gets the boards and plays tough physical defense.

But Lucas was so much more than that. He—not Walton, not the stable of lightning-quick guards who were on the receiving end of so many Walton outlet passes—was the team’s leading scorer. He was a four-time All-Star in the NBA (plus once in the NBA); twice on the all-defensive team, and once on the all-NBA second team.

The only other Portland power forward who comes close to Lucas in greatness is Rasheed Wallace—and it’s unlikely we’ll ever retire his number, unless it’s in honor of Porter. Buck Williams is in third place, and I think #52 will be retired some day—but for Greg Oden.

I think this is a tough one...

You cant retire the numbers of everybody that ever helped get us to the finals, but I think Duckworth’s number should be retired. I don’t think that just because someone has died that you should retire their jersey, but I think the combination of his contributions on the court in those finals runs, and his work in the Portland community, along with the sudden and tragic circumstances of his passing are reasons enough. Get it done Blazers.

You're silly...

There is no way you are going to find his IP, none of his communications come to us directly from his IP, they come to us via the web hosts IP. Besides even if you did know his IP, you could not retire it, you don’t have the authority. Now that I have finished being a computer geek (something I do for a living), I will give you some suggestions that are more appropriate.

I suggest a Draft Ben website (blog) and when he is drafted we can declare him the greatest of all time and then retire his jersey, build a fountain to be named after him, and then petition city council to have the street that runs next to the east side of the Rose Garden named after Ben – Ben Boulevard!

After he dies we will have the Catholic Church declare him a saint, and they will build great cathedrals and name them after him.

There – I guess I have had my fun being silly too.

Love ya Ben! (You know, like bros)

While Duck's career numbers

are not up there with Terry’s I think his contribution to those seasons we just as important. If Terry’s gets retired so should Duck’s.

They said Terry Porter was first in a line of pretty much one before this happened

So it could very well be done some day to honor Duck posthumously, but rather not so soon. This also wouldn’t send the right signal IMHO, if people just think they retired his jersey because he tragically happened to die way too early.

His family and friends can better experience the appreciation and respect he had in the community now by having the service in the Memorial Coliseum and a minute of silence or another fitting tribute at the home opener in the Rose Garden.

As much as I loved Duck

I’ve got to say no. Before he died, he wouldn’t have even been considered. Not that he wasn’t good, or even very good. But Jksnake99 is right, it should be a very rare thing. Otherwise, what numbers will everyone else wear? It’s like in writing, if you emphasize everything, it has the same effect as if you emphasized nothing at all.

This should be a question

We readdress a few months later, after the sting and sadness of his death has faded a bit.

I’m not sure, pre-death, if we would have agreed he should get his number retired. I agree with those who say it should be very rare, and while we all love Duck with all of our hearts his career probably doesn’t warrant that.

However, since we’re all sad from his passing and wish to honor him the best we can, we should find other ways to remember him by for now and come back to the number retirement question later on when we can consider it more objectively and rationally, and not simply emotionally.

I love Duck, so it isn’t a besmirchment on his character or his Blazer career to not retire his number.

I think I agree with Morty

However…while I am leaning toward not retiring his number, I do think there should be some sort of memorial for not only Duck but other Blazer greats who give this franchise a sense of history. Perhaps a Ring of Honor or something similar. It would not only show the appreciation that the fans feel for these guys, but also ….perhaps…..give the player that sense of pride that goes along with wearing the uniform of the Portland Trail Blazers. I mean, if Greg Oden were to look up and see Buck’s name alongside the #52 that he also wears ….I think that would be very cool. Maybe if Sheed had seen TP’s name up there next to the #30, he might have had more respect for the uniform he wore (probably not…but maybe). Just a thought

How about an alternative? Create a Hall of Fame.

Duck falls in with a lot of players who were great, but fall short of having their number retired, even under these circumstances (I agree with those who said that once the shock and sadness passes, most would likely say his number shouldn’t be retired).

Instead, maybe it’s time for the team to create a Blazers Hall of Fame. Include all the important moments, memorabilia, and induct players by giving them a player’s night at a game. Great way to have a promotion without retiring numbers.

It would have been a given that Duck would belong in a Blazer Hall of Fame, even before the events of this week… give him a big ’ol portrait and lots of memories.

Speaking of which, perhaps Portland will set up a big in-memoriam portrait , at the Rose Garden before next season.

I strongly agree-I always thought there should be something like a ring of honor...

…as other franchises have, with the names of the honored lining the arena or hanging from the rafters. I’ve never much cared for the retiring of numbers, with the possible exception of cases like Lou Gehrig or Thurman Munson who died in the prime of their careers, in which cases the retired number stands as a memorial (or w/ the MLB retiring # 42 in honor of Jackie Robinson, whose career transcended the game). A ring of honor would also be a much better way to honor the highly important “role” players (Duck, Buck, Neal, Steele) alongside of the unquestioned stars of the team.

by Modal Rounder on Aug 28, 2008 5:44 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I didnt vote because I am torn

As far as stats go, no. I am not saying he had horrible stats, because he filled the role we needed at the time – a giant plug in the lane to defend against the top centers in the league. I view him a little higher then I do Pryz right now, and only because of the team he was on. If he was a better player by 5% he would have been a top 5 (maybe even 3) center in the league in the early 90’s. But he wasnt.

However, since when does the wonderful town we call home here in Portland ever do things normal? We are “Weird” and we love it. Why not retire a players number in memorial of the kind of character we lost durring the “Jailblazer” years? Why not memorialize a man who has had nothing but accolades on the kind of person he was on and off the court? I do feel he deserves some kind of memorandom. He had a huge heart, unfortunately he also had a body that tried to contain it.

Maybe we dont retire his number, how about a jersey with just his name, no number. Something to help remind people of what we had pre “Jailblazers” and what we strive for in the “culture” we want with our team in the future.

Didn’t he come up with some numerology on how to retire jerseys a while back in order to see how TP fit? What does it look like if we run those same numbers on Duck?

Here's the deal

Who cares if no one can wear 00 anymore?

I love Duck, man. I’m heartbroken. Dude lived across the street from a school, showed off his fish tank to kids if they came over to say hi.

It’s not a big deal. If they retire his number they’ll be memorializing one of the players with the biggest hearts in Blazer history.

Game 7 versus the Spurs. Think of how that made you feel…how it still makes me feel.

Go ahead, retire it. 00. Not a big deal, but it will make me happy. If it bothers you, I think you care a little too much about a very trivial thing.

During the Terry Porter discussion

I said I thought the whole 90-92 starting five should be retired.

- Buck Williams should be a no-brainer. Take any argument for Porter, substitute “rebounds” for “assists,” and he should be in.

- Kersey was a huge scorer, rebounder, defender — the team’s main hustle player, very exciting.

- Duckworth was THE main option in the paint, a really strong, very effective center. He may not have been recognized as a top center in the league (oh yeah, wait, he was an all-star), but he was crucial to the team’s success.

I was sorry to see Oden wearing 52. I hope he’ll pick a different number and make it his own.

Retire the number, not the jersey.

Or to be more specific, I don’t agree that 00 should be hanging from the rafters, yet it should still be retired in Duck’s memory. Yes, everybody dies, but not everybody makes Portland their home when they retire, are as connected to the community or are such a stand up guy deserving of such a memorial.

Some sort of plaque, memorial or annual award in his honor is appropriate, along with retiring the number. But the jersey shouldn’t hang in the rafters. Heck, Duck would probably prefer it that way…a man of the people, still rubbing shoulders down in the crowd, not lording over from above. I think it speaks even more highly of Duck that his number wouldn’t be retired because of his achievements on the court.

Do the Blazers have some sort of citizenship award?

I think that would be a worthy thing to name after Duck. Recognize one of the players for their outstanding contributions to the community. It wouldn’t even necessarily need to be an annual thing, but whenever a player is deemed worthy.

I think so.

Sure do retire his jersey. It wasn’t like he was a nobody, who has become somebody from a death. He was a good player. One I think is worthy of such an honor. I remember him back in 90 and 92 and he was one of the Blazers star players. So yes, retire it for his good play during his tenure.
