Kevin Duckworth: A Poetic Tribute
Having Seen The Hook
I heard the news today, oh boy
About a Trail Blazer who passed away
And though the news was rather sad
It helped to see him laugh
Even in a photograph
But beneath his smile there was a frown
A sad and lonely man though loved by all
He ate so much to flee the pain
But the rain just came and came
It took his breath away
His heart stopped beating on the coast
He didn't notice he was loved the most
And adored by children near and far
But for those from yesterday
The ones that saw him play
It marked beginning of an end
To an era that's now gone away
But lives on vibrant in our minds
How could he leave us here?
A man of barely 40 years…
Big man, tall man, gather near
For fans that once tortured your ear
Now sing your praises over guilty fear
And though they know not what they do
Some of us stuck with you through and through
We ran down a dream not once but twice
It never did come to us
In death..
We pray..
It comes to you

Duckworth: a haiku
A consummate pro,
with a smile all came to love.
Rest In Peace, Duckworth.

A Day of Fishing.
When I was a young man
Barely old enough to carry the title,
My father took me fishing
To teach me to be productively idle
I thought it was a bore,
Fishing line often would tangle.
But one day I saw him,
A hero who also loved to angle.
We were buying bait that morning,
In the market for about a buck’s worth,
When in walked a giant fisherman,
Vested for angling, one Kevin Duckworth.
I couldn’t believe it, he was there,
It was beyond my wildest wishing.
An NBA all star, a Blazer,
On the Clackamas fishing.
We did not bother him,
He looked to be enjoying his day.
But his demeanor was pleasant,
Even while watching from far away.
At that point I figured,
Fishing wasn’t all that bad.
If Duck enjoyed it so much,
I could try it with my Dad.
I never became a decent angler,
But I still think its kind of fun.
But on this day I remember back,
To what a brief encounter had done.
To those who fish avidly,
To those who are beginners still.
Catch your next fish for Duckworth,
and throw it on your grill.
We will all miss the big double-zero. Please keep his family, friends and fans in your prayers tonight.

Thanks T, you've earned your title with this one.
I’ve been weepy all day and this actually helped. It’s a beautiful elegy to Duck.

I grew up on Duck and company, so I feel obliged to give it a shot even though poetry is not my thang...
In 1964, a man was born,
His parents were definitely tooting their own horn.
Surely they didn’t know what was in store,
He reached 6 feet tall, then grew one foot more.
Before they knew it, off to school he went,
At EIU, his coached named him the gentle giant.
In 1986, the Spurs made him their pick,
Then traded him to Portland, a home that would stick.
His first year in the league was truly a struggle,
Then injuries happened, and the roster was juggled.
In came a man with karma on his side,
A class act his whole life, and finally hitting his stride.
His second year with the blazers, he found his groove,
And earned an award we like to call, the most improved.
Always a man that knew his roots,
He bought his parents a home, new shoes and new boots.
The following year, double zero became an all star,
Then went to the finals and finished a hair above par.
If you thought he was done, you surely missed,
One more all star game and finals were added to his list.
Many thought his jumper looked funny,
But it kept on working like the energizer bunny.
He signed autographs until his pen ran dry,
Then hunted down another, simply to see happiness in every kid’s eyes
He hosted basketball camps for kids and for free,
The children involved were filled with glee.
There is no telling how many lives he affected,
To figure it out, a magnificent calculator would need to be erected.
There is one thing I can never understand,
How can we be robbed of this type of man.
I find myself wondering what he is wishing,
Darkstar said it above, think of Duck and go fishing….

Forever Duck
Twas a time in Blazerland when drafted Walter Berry
seemed quite good in college but professionally contrary
traded him to San Antone for some unknown of girth
who soon would come to steal our hearts
Blazing new trails on a team gave sudden new re-birth
This kindly giant came in the fold and took us by surprise
Drexler, Buck, TP and Kersey saw it too- the fire in his eyes
Soon Duck became the centerpiece anchoring the middle
the final cog in the enignmat basketball hoops riddle
When it came to game time, he always wore that face
Carried us upon broad shoulders to the NBA’s final race
Kevin always gave 110 ten percent
Took on every challenge with no energy left unspent
I guess not every story ends happily ever after
Thank you Duck for Blazer memories, all the love and laughter
Forever we’ll remember you our friend Kevin Duckworth
We’ll see you soon, when our time comes, to ascend off the earth.
I miss you Duck.

I personally do not always approve of the things my cat wants posted but have to wonder after that #5 ranking if frankly we havent earned it.
