Kevin Duckworth, Dead, at 44
UPDATE 4: Around the web we go... Blogfather's Tribute, Dwight Jaynes, Kelly Dwyer, Hoopsworld, Brad Rock, Ivan Carter, Chris Snethen and a truly top-shelf article from Wayne Thompson.
Sean has plenty more, including multimedia, at Oregonlive.
UPDATE 3: Very nice splash screen on official Blazers website with pictures and a form for you to leave your thoughts. Also, a note with this sad but understandable news, "All remaining stops on the Trail Blazers Summer Tour have been canceled."
UPDATE 2: Kevin Pritchard, Larry Miller and Jerome Kersey will be addressing the media at 10:30 to provide more information. Thanks to Casey for the heads up; Casey has a post on Duck with excerpts from an interview he did last year.
UPDATE: via Oregonlive's Noelle Crombie.
A Lincoln County 9-1-1 dispatcher this morning confirmed Duckworth died Monday. A dispatcher said a police sergeant is expected to release more information about the death later this morning.
A spokesman for the Depoe Bay Fire Department said the agency responded to a report about 10 p.m. of an unconscious man at Salishan Lodge. Paramedics worked on Duckworth for 30 minutes but he never regained consciousness. He appeared to have gone into cardiac arrest, fire officials said. He was pronounced dead at 10:23 p.m., said Lt. Dennis Knudson.
The Blazers Press Release...
BLAZERS GREAT KEVIN DUCKWORTH, TWO-TIME ALL-STAR, DIES
"Duck" starred for two-time Western Conference Champs
PORTLAND, Ore. - Kevin Duckworth, 44, a two-time NBA All-Star who starred on Western Conference Championship teams in Portland in 1990 and 1992, passed away Monday evening in Gleneden Beach, Oregon.
A member of the Trail Blazers from 1986-93, the 7-footer - affectionately known to Trail Blazers fans simply as "Duck" - also played for San Antonio, Washington, Milwaukee and the Los Angeles Clippers during his 11-year NBA career.
"Today is an extremely sad day for the Trail Blazers family," Trail Blazers President Larry Miller said. "Kevin will be remembered by fans as one of the most popular and recognizable players to ever wear the Blazers uniform, but to people who knew him, he'll be remembered as one of the warmest and biggest-hearted."
Duckworth remained in the Portland area after his playing career ended, where he was an avid fisherman & outdoorsman, and a skilled carpenter. He was on the Oregon Coast representing the Trail Blazers as a Heritage Ambassador on the team's 19-city Statewide Summer Tour. The cause of his death is unknown, and will be determined by a Lincoln County Medical Examiner.
A second-round draft pick of the San Antonio Spurs out of Eastern Illinois University in 1986, Duckworth was only 14 games into his NBA career when he was acquired by the Trail Blazers from San Antonio in exchange for Walter Berry.
One season later, the 7-foot center was thrust into the spotlight because of injuries to Steve Johnson and Sam Bowie. Duckworth responded by averaging 15.8 points and 7.4 rebounds per game, establishing himself as a pivot presence instrumental in Portland's emergence as one of the NBA's dominant teams.
Duckworth remains the 10th leading scorer (7,188) and rebounder (3,327) in Trail Blazers history, compiling averages of 13.6 points and 6.3 rebounds in 527 games with Portland. During his tenure, Trail Blazers teams compiled a record of 356-193 (.648). In 684 career NBA games, Duckworth scored 8,085 points (11.8 ppg), grabbed 3,945 rebounds (5.8 rpg) and shot 46.8 percent from the field.
"This is a devastating loss," said Traci Rose, Trail Blazers Vice President of Community Relations. "To this day, Duck is adored throughout this state and remains a brother to his teammates and to Trail Blazers staff. We will forever miss our beloved 00."
Information on memorial services will be announced as it becomes available. Duckworth is survived by his mother and sister.
More details and tributes to come later today. You can also check out rpeachey's thread in the sidebar.

I’m happy he did that goofy sit-in at half time of a broadcast last year, cringe-worthy as it was. He was a great Blazer. Dwight Jaynes had a good post about Duck:

Totally underrated talent
2 Time allstar. One of my favs. Kind of a fragile guy, ego-wise, but a soft touch around the hoop. He battled weight and confidence issues his whole career, but in 90 he was fantastic (especially after the whole Bowie and Walton issues it was great to have a center we could count on). RIP Duck……I will miss you

There are some nice comments on ESPN's story
A rarity over there. I like this one:
“miketatham34 (17 minutes ago) Report Violation I remember Kevin at Eastern Illinois University. He lived in my dorm, Thomas Hall, and was always a popular guy there and on campus. One night in my dorm room I was popping some popcorn in my hotair popper, if anyone can remember those things. Just as the batch of popcorn finished popping, there was a bang on my door. I opened the door, and standing there in his 7 foot frame holding an empty bowl was Kevin. He smiled and said he could smell the popcorn out in hallway. Obviously, I made another batch. RIP Kevin, you were always cool to me and my friends.”

I read this one also and almost posted as well
A lot of the comments I am reading are telling of personal meetings with the man and almost 100% of them involve a nice story. Tells you a lot about the man. He was an excellent representative of the Portland Trailblazers, Portland in general and as a human being. Sad day indeed.

Duck was a huge reason i began playing basketball
Watching him succeed in the NBA as an obese athlete got me off of my couch in my early teens and got me onto the basketball court. My best friends even mimicked the Duck’s shot so much that he made it his own and became very good and looked like a shorter version of the Duck. Thanks for all the memories Kevin. The TrailBlazers and the entire state of Oregon will sadly miss you.

Maybe if we get the Terry Porter thing done….the team can invite the rest of the Blazers from the 90s for a tribute to Duck as well. Gavin has been talking all morning about retiring his number …I am not sure that is appropriate ….however a tribute with his team attending I think would be great.

I remember duckworth as being a bit on the streaker side, and that annoyed me, but he was a blazer and he was ours.
I deal with life sucking events with humor, but realize that such would not be appreciated and thus will bite my tongue.
Here’s hoping he had a great life, a great family. and that everyone has been taken care of and feels that he really added value for being on this earth. A person who has lived tends to be a person who will be missed, and here’s hoping he’s dearly missed.

R.I.P. Duck,
He was a genuine nice guy. I was at the Vancouver Mall one day when Duck was on the team still. I was at a office supply place, and was signing a check at the counter, when I felt this huge shadow fall over me and everything around me. It was Kevin, he was signing some autographs for some kids, and his pen ran out of ink. Rather than tell the kids no more, he went in the store and bought another pen to keep signing. He talked to me for just a moment, then said, I got to get back to signing for the kids. He was not the perfect Blazer, but he was a cog in what was some special times in Portland, and loved by all.
God Bless you Kevin, and may our thoughts and prayers give some comfort to your family.

I met Duck when I worked at Skamania Lodge and I waited on him and his wife. He was a very nice man. when he paid I brought him back his change, he looked and it and said hey, if you want a decent tip you should break down the change and give people the opportunity to pay you what they think you are worth, then he handed me 30 and said thanks. He was a class act as a person.

Blazer fans and Oregon should be mourning the passing of one of our own. Rest In Peace Kevin Duckworth. Great Blazer center and citizen of Oregon.

This hurts
He was way too young.
I saw him before one game last year surrounded by fans. I was wearing an old Blazer shirt that had (printed) signatures on it – his included – and I showed it to him and said I’d always been a fan – got a big grin in return.
My tears are not only for the loss of a decent human being, but for the knowledge that those “golden years” when he played for us are long past and the memories will be fading too.

Suns fans
Reading through the comments on ESPN’s article about Duck’s passing, it made me smile to see how respected he was by fans of other teams, ESPECIALLY Suns fans. I guess I was just too young to remember specific games, but it seems like he saved some great playoff performances for those Suns teams we took care of a few times in the playoffs.
http://myespn.go.com/s/conversations/show/story/3553879
Duck was one of a kind and I’m not sure if there has been a Blazer more appreciative of the fans. I know I’m repeating myself because I said the same in the other thread, but his passing really bums me out and it was much too soon.
I was worried that the ESPN thread would be filled with nonsense (like normal). I usually don’t dare venture into there when I care about a subject, but I’m glad to see most of the comments are so nice.

Yes some really insensitive things written there now
however the majority was very kind. I am so sad. This last month, blazer fan wise, has been an emotional roller coaster. I am so happy that he has left such a beautiful legacy. It is not an understatement when it is said that he was a class act and nice nice nice man. He truly opened himself up to the community and embraced the fans. Looks like that poster will be ressurected from my garage and posted. He deserves to never be forgotten.

One hand Wobbler !
My friends and I loved Duck and his one
hand wobbler jump shot. We used to imitate
all the Blazers shots when we played HORSE.
I met him a couple of times. The first was
at an exhibition game in Medford in Oct 18th,
1987 vs. the Cleveland Cavs. We talked to him
at halftime and he signed my homemade
banner. (along w/ Kiki, Clyde, Jerome, Blazer
Bill, etc.) He was such a easy going, regular
guy. We were chanting “Duck – All Star” and
he gave us the thumbs up on his chances
for the future.
I got another chance to talk to him again at the
2007 Blazers fan fest. What a mountain of a man !
All he could talk about was how great the Blazers
were going to be again and how he loved working
with kids. One my all time faves.
RIP – Duck. You will be missed !!!

God bless Kevin Duckworth!
My dad called me just a few weeks ago to tell me that he and my brother were watching a classic Blazer game from the 1990s, and just as he would do back in the day started griping about Kevin Duckworth! I laughed, remembering how dad always claimed he "hated’ Duckworth (never understood why…) and just as I would do then I defended Duckworth as one of my favorite players. I could tell that my dad wasn’t serious and again, just as I believed then that he secretly admired Duckworth, I got the feeling he was really enjoying seeing Kevin back in action.
For my part, I really appreciated seeing Kevin at the RG last season with Bill Schonley, Clyde and Jerome. My prayers go out to the Duckworth family as we all mourn his loss.

my eyes well
I mean I loved Duck. He was a great Trail Blazer. Duck was a part of the core that took us to the Finals. Duck was a great person- kind, tough, sensitive, fallible, clutch, but always beloved.
I wanted to think of a few memories of Duck to help me though it.
My first involved his first appearance as a Trail Blazer after trading Walter “the knife” Berry to San Antone. The game was televised and it may have even been against the Spurs, but what I recall is watching that game with friends and commenting on “who is this guy?” after several inside jukes for scores and the very first Duck-hook. We all felt kinda amazed at how Portland got a potential steal in a good big man, with a feathery touch and of course size.
My second special memory of Duck involved a run in with KJ during a playoff game. KJ busted through the D and Duck was waiting, hands skyward and perfectly vertical as KJ jumped into him knee first, before crashing to the hardwood in a heap courtesy of the Duck brick wall. KJ got the call (because it was in Phoenix and KJ was a whiner) then got up, grabbed the ball and heaved a chest pass into Duck’s sternum like he wanted to start something with Duck. Duck had the most amazing grin on his face at KJ’s attempt to man-up before him, and before the ref’s restored order.
I guess the last most obvious memory of Duck involved his frustration with Vlade Divac always being able to poke the ball out from him when Duck caught it in the low post. I know that caused Duck many a frustration, and for every time it happened, I loved Duck more and more for it. Sometimes its the guy like Duck who may not always get it right, but deep down makes the team, and all of us better.
See you in Heaven, Duck, where autographs wont matter.

Kevin Duckworth, my memories
At a race in the Salem area in the mid ‘90s, it was my pleasure to meet Kevin as he walked by me, I recognized him and asked him for his autograph. He began laughing with me as he pointed to the camera in my hand and said, "wouldn’t you rather have a picture?" Alittle embarrassed, I said “yes of course!” and we laughed together at my silliness.
I suppose I was alittle star struck after a joke was played on me regarding the trailblazers when I first arrived in Oregon in 1992 at the peak of the basketball season. Knowing little about basketball, good friends arranged to have a very tall guy pretend to be a trailblazer as we had drinks together at the ‘Taco House’. After a few times running into “Frank the Bank” he actually pulled a basketball out of the trunk of his car, and autographed it for me. Later I learned that Frank was not a Trailblazer, however, they all pulled it off superbly and had me laughing for weeks. When I learned who the real players were I began to feel like a part of Oregon and a small part of the Trailblazers. No wonder I was star struck when I had the pleasure of meeting Kevin! He was very friendly and made me feel very comfortable when I kinda felt silly about not realizing I had a camera in my hand.
To Kevin, Godspeed my friend, you are a hero and an awesome role model for all. You will be greatly missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing you.
To Kevin’s family, my prayers are with you. Please find comfort in having Kevin in your lives, even though it was a short time.

More than almost any Blazer, he seemed like one of us...
…by which I mean it seemed like he never lost his sense of wonder at making it into the league. It was always heartwarming to see that this fairly obscure but talented player could ascend such heights, and through dedicated and hard work become an all-star and most improved player. I often wished he could have had the confidence in his game that he seemed to lack, but that too made it all the more easier for me to relate to him.
I’ve always maintained, and I always will, that the trade that brought Duck to Portland was one of the Blazers’ best ever, and I was always proud to call Kevin Duckworth one of our own. R.I.P. Duck-we’ll miss you terribly.

Without Duck,
the Blazers would have never achieved the success that they had at the time. He was such an integral part of this team, such a great person. I can picture in my mind Duck shooting the basketball from the top of the key with that one handed shot of his, the ball arcing in slow motion through the hoop, the eruption from the arena. He was so loved by the fans, and we loved him. It was no surprise he chose to live his life here, even though he moved around the league in his later playing days.

How much all of us appreciated him. I have been astounded at the outpouring of fond memories of Duck that have been expressed here as well as O-live, and on the radio. He was obviously beloved. I never got the opportunity to meet the big fella and now I am saddened that I never will. By all accounts he was a guy that I could have related to. The ups and downs are something I went thru as well (as did many of us). I did enjoy watching him. I got chills when he walked out for game seven of the Spurs series. I remember arguing with a friend of mine (during the1989/90 season) that Duck was better than Bill Lambier. I still believe that Duck was the more talented player but time showed that he struggled with confidence issues (Damn you Vlade…you may have ruined him). If he had just a little bit of a mean streak, he would have probably been a better player ….but he wouldn’t have been the guy we loved. I really hope he knew……about his friends….about his teammates …and the thousands of strangers who will miss him.

A Grand and Gentle Giant has died
but he will not soon be forgotten by the Blazer community. He was not just a good player. He was a good person.
And that’s the Truth.

Duck lived about a mile from where I grew up
In a house across the street from the T-ball fields at William Walker elementary school.
I played a lot of T-ball there, and once kids got wind of the fact that Kevin Duckworth lived a stone’s throw away, they started congregating around his gate yelling for autographs, trying to get a glimpse of him and, really, acting in a way that would have annoyed me if I had just been trying to live my life in relative privacy.
But Duck actually came out. And not just to sign autographs, either. He sat down in the tiny metal bleachers and watched the game.
Getting thrown out at first in front of Duck was rough. He’ll be missed.

I'm amazed
So many comments about the man, and 99.9% of them positive.
