RUDY RUDY RUDY

WOW!!! Rudy baby!!

The kid is going to be great!! There is 2 min left in the game with the US and he just fowled out but what a performance!!  He wanted the ball in his hand with the forth and did work with it!! Going right in the teeth of the US D and not backing down.

The dunk around Howard was great not just the athletic ability but the way he used his off arm to keep Howard from blocking the sot and it drew the foul. Wow what a play.

Kobe would be playing him and got Kobe a could times!!

Cant wait for him to start playing in Portland!! Just one of the many reasons I got my season tickets this year!!!

Cant wait!!

GO BLAZERS!!!

No better time and place for him to make a name for himself than the Gold Medal game.

Rudy is now known worldwide as the guy who posterized Dwight Howard on the biggest stage in the world.

It wasn't so much the plays Rudy made that impressed me

I’ve seen plenty of his stuff on Youtube….it’s that
1) He did them under such pressure and
2) That he did them against such great athletes.

That has been my thinking this whole time....

If he can just hold his own against the BEST the league has to offer, let alone take over and change the game, and carry his team on his shoulders, and put up 22 points in 17 min, think of what he will be able to do against the League’s second units. Wow.

Holy Moly

I was always skeptical of Rudy and his (future) place on the team. Everyone on this site seemed to be anointing him as the second coming even though he had never proven anything against anyone elite. I remained skeptical even though he was clearly the best player in Europe last year. And plus, as a Martell Believer I was even more hesitant to accept this greasy, vaguely racist, Clive Owen-looking Euro onto my favorite team. Dont get me wrong, I still (obviously) enjoyed the Youtube clips and was looking forward to the arrival, its just that I needed some sort of proof to show that Rudy was in fact what everyone thinks he is.

Well, tonight blew my socks off. Count me as a converted member of the Rudy Nation. He did EVERYTHING. It was amazing. His 3 point shooting was unbelievable. (James Jones will not be missed next year people.) His leadership and will to score was unparalleled on a veteran NBA Spain Squad. The alley oop was siiiick. And perhaps most importantly/incredibly, he didnt back down and actually got better going toe to toe against the most elite players/team ever assembled in one place.

Oh, and The Dunk?

Please. After that, I became a believer. Put it this way, – Im convinced that the most everlasting image of this olmypics won’t be Michael Phelps, Usain Bolt or the Sketchy Chinese Gymnasts but Rudy facializing Dwight Howard.

Boom.

Well said. I agree 99.99% (except for the everlasting image part – that belongs to the falling out of bounds alley oop to Kobe).

I was in here trying to downplay Rudy earlier with my “ole, ole!” remarks on his defense, but I am now a total convert. Honestly, I don’t see how they are going to keep that guy on the bench for long, he is simply too good. And Bayless – who I love to watch play and has such an assassin mentality – is going to have to learn to play some point.

Congratulations to Rudy for his overall performance in the Olympics

If I think about that a guy who can definitely have a big impact on important games under pressure only needs to be a good sixth man on this team next year and nobody expects him to shoulder all the load I’m getting giddy. Go Rudy! Go Blazers!

There is chocolate inside

And I mean ‘chocolate’ in the way a Spaniard would mean it: hashish.

And I take him biting the medal as a way to check how many carots it is… or is that only for gold? What do I know, what am I, a jeweler? Well I’m not.

Rudy is just the ranch dressing on our delicious Blazers meal. We don’t need him but it makes everything better. If you don’t like ranch, then replace it with gravy (I don’t like gravy). If you don’t like gravy, I’m sorry but I don’t know what to say. Replace gravy with whatever food-accessory you love to add to your favorite meals that just makes it fattier and yummier. The 2nd slice of cheddar, perhaps. I’m not your mother do it yourself.

Not that Rudy is superfluous; far from it! We’re just totally stacked and we can enjoy Rudy even through the eventual growing pains because we won’t be relying on him (like Norsktroll sez). It’s a great situation for him and us.

I loved Rudy's game.

I am just afraid that he’s not going to get too many munites with Nate. We all know how nate operates with Sergio. I think he’ll do the same with Rudy, or try to change Rudy’s game. The first couple mistakes Sergio makes, and he’s benched. Then Nate says that the fans don’t see the whole game. Part of Rudy’s appeal is his flair. Nate does not seem to like flair. The first between the legs dribbling criss cross three point shot that misses, he’ll be sitting on the bench. Hope I’m wrong. But I just have a feeling that Nate is going to try to squash some of his dynamic and make him a safe player. Let’s go Rudy! Let him do his thing Nate!

My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

by OCBlazerFan1 on Aug 24, 2008 7:46 AM PDT reply actions

I doubt...

Nate is unaware that Rudy is on another level than Sergio. Also, Rudy seems like a potential combo guard which makes him more useful than Serg. Being flashy at the 2 is different than being flashy at the point.

I think nate will have a little more open coaching style with the team. maybe not right away but mid season on he will let them run and have som fun. there going to be great to watch. Oden will be one of the best fast break big man in the leauge once he get back in shape, roy will love to run, aldridge will run like he did at texas, and now add a 6’ 5 ball handler, passer, and the eyes to see it all they will be great to watch and i think nate knows that and will let them be a little losser

After sitting there courtside and watching Rudy outplay the cream of the NBA (save Kobe and, arguably, Wade), there’s no way Nate can have Rudy ride the pine. You can bet Nate is a full-blown Rudy convert now; Rudy’ll get his minutes.

One good thing about Roy...

I have to look for the silver lining in everything. So, one good aspect of Roy’s surgery is that he won’t be playing hard during the preseason. This ought to give Nate plenty of opportunities to get used to Rudy’s game.

Has been discussed pretty extensively how that rotation will probably work

E.g. see Dave’s post “Rudy vs. Jerryd” http://www.blazersedge.com/2008/8/21/598132/rudy-vs-jerryd

I think they can not only co-exist, we should be happy that we have all three so Roy can hopefully get some rest in games that aren’t so close. What I’m not so sure anymore is who will see more time in the fourth with Roy on the floor, Rudy or Bayless. Before the Olympics I would have said definitely Balyess because he seems to be a good point guard defender and can draw fouls pretty easily with his playing style. But Rudy has shown some nice ability to be a clutch player late in close games, so we will see who Nate feels he can rely on more. Also a small three guard lineup with either Brandon or Rudy at 3 could be expected more often.

Odenied: Asked whether he noticed Oden favoring his right knee, Frye dismissed it entirely. "He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors."

Serg – Shoots 60 % from the FT line.
     Rudy – 80 % FT
Serg – No defense ! Completely LOST !
Rudy – Good in the passing lanes, help D. Will
                  do good in the zone.

Rudy is delightful

I also don’t worry about his playing time at all. Nate isn’t inherently biased towards Spaniards OR flashy players. He likes defense but has played PLENTY of Blazers big minutes who aren’t good defenders. I agree with Walkoff41.

EXCEPT FOR ONE THING— Rudy was a 90% FT shooter this season, not an abysmal 80%.

I love Sergio’s court vision, but he and Rudy have almost nothing in common. It’s like worrying Nate wouldn’t play a good player from Duke because Josh McRoberts sat the bench. Rudy is a lot better player. He was better in Europe, better in the Olympics, and will likely be better in the NBA.

Nate plays whoever he thinks is the better player.

Mac and Rudy

The Blazers wanted Rudy badly – and Mac is an intimate part of any personnel decisions KP makes. Mac was interviewed last week, and his comments on Rudy were that he believes he has high ceiling, and can be a good NBA player. Don’t try to compare Sergio and Mac to Rudy and Mac. Rudy, as the Spanish teams coaches clearly showed in putting the team together, is simply a much better player. And Mac and KP know that as well. He’ll get to play. He starred against the the all-stars and showed he could stay on the floor with them. Not just your regular NBA squad, but the all-stars. Spain showed some real guts. They kept in close, never let the US get away, and kept coming back. I can’t blame anyone watching this game from being excited.

was pretty non existent. He was totally outplayed by Pau Gasol. The US seemed to not rely so much on the center position to score but rather kept him in to alter shots and play D. Rudy dropping three’s, and making passes that left your jaw on the floor, a close contest throughout, no 20 point leads at any point, and the end result was a USA win. "He doesn't let grass grow under his feet when there are points to be had." - Dave

by BlueBooYay on Aug 24, 2008 9:04 AM PDT reply actions

I think it was a coaching menouver

See if they could hang in there for the first quarter with there best man-to-man defensive team, all the while having your most effective offensive weapon on the bench. Bring him in in the second quarter and switch to that zone. I would really have liked to see Rudy play 27min instead of 17 though.

by MattyDread on Aug 24, 2008 10:06 AM PDT up reply actions

He would have been in there

til the end if he didn’t foul out. The game sure changed for Spain when he left. Thats when the US really pulled away. It just goes to show what an impact he really had on his team. Cant wait to get him over here.

by lethaldose on Aug 24, 2008 11:47 AM PDT up reply actions

Animart, we need an answer to this question

USA led Spain 38-31 after 1 period. Rudy did not play 1 second of those 10 minutes. Has someone asked the Spanish coaches what the ________ they were thinking?

Congratulations to Espana for winning the silver medal,

Now Nate can say to Rudy “come to Portland and get your fill of revenge on these NBA players!”

by two4larue on Aug 24, 2008 8:20 PM PDT up reply actions

There are not comments.

The Spanish coach have been doing a lot of different rotations.
Perhaps there will be questions and analysis in the time to come.
I think he was afraid about problems at PG position because Calderon was injured, Raul Lopez was not well and Ricky is too young. He probably wanted to keep Rudy in the bench until he realized how things were going on at PG. In fact Rudy and Navarro played some time as combo guards running the point.

by amlmart1 on Aug 24, 2008 10:43 PM PDT up reply actions

OK, Thanks

It’s too bad that Espana couldn’t face USA with a full complement in their backcourt, they may have made history. As it was, the US had to shoot the lights out from 3 (and get many FT attempts) to stay ahead.

Once again, congratulations to team Spain for making the US team play their ‘A’ game to win the gold. The Espana players showed a lot of heart, they could’ve “settled” for the silver medal and gotten blown out, but they showed no quit even with a depleted guard corps

by two4larue on Aug 25, 2008 4:10 PM PDT up reply actions

My guess

is most of the media who have questioned this, (like D Jaynes) don’t understand international coaching. Many times the best player on a team will come off the bench, starting just doesn’t mean as much in international ball as it does in the NBA. I am willing to bet there was no punishment issue or something crazy, just a different style of coaching that most are not accustome to. And it looks like it worked too, because Rudy had a great game, and the Spanish kept it close during the 1st qtr and the whole game. Compare that to the first game in pool play, where Spain obviously didn’t show its whole package for the US to scout, and I think the Spanish coach did a great job in this game.

Rudy stats for the whole Olympics - if you want to base your irrational Rudy love on facts, but who cares about facts ;-)

Second scorer after Pau Gasol on the Spanish team, with 105 points. 177 minutes in 8 games (again second after Pau). Shooting 56% for 2pts (19/34) and 40% for 3pts (16/40, so in fact he took more threes). 79% from the line (19/24). 28 rebounds (12 offensive, 16 defensive). 17 assists (second best behind Rubio). 8 steals (Rubio 17!). 2 blocks. 15 turnovers, 22 fouls committed.

Some comparisons to Team USA: Only Wade (128 in 150 min), LeBron (124 in 198) and Kobe (120 in 188) scored more points – yet Wade did so with 30 minutes less, man of the games. Some US players who operate closer to the basket are more efficient (also because they often got easier shots). But in terms of shooting percentages, Rudy even compares pretty favorably with Kobe and had double the number of trips to the line (61% for 2, 32% from 3, 58% FT, also 17 assists) in pretty much the same playing time. Funny side note: Overall Rudy had one more assist than Kidd, who is a pass first, second and third guy with 13 points in a little over 100 minutes ;-)

Once again, great job for a player who will come off the bench for the Blazers most of the time in his first year.

What a great game that was!

The crowd was so into it, and with the limited commercials it really sucked you in (or maybe that was the alcohol, but still) and made it a great watch.

WHAT ABOUT RICKY! that guy is the real deal…… KP better have his name in sights for the upcoming drafts..

We would have the entire Spanish Fanbase if we had Ricky and Rubio……

Ricky Rubio really impressed me tonight.

Ricky = championships

It’s not like we have to choose between the two; I think people here are saying that they are more likely to get championships with Ricky on the team.

Unfortunately, where we’ll be drafting for the next 15 years, we’ll either have to Pritch-slap someone in a trade, or have Ricky secretly change his name just before declaring for the draft, telling noone except Rudy Fernandez, who meets Pritchard secretly in the Rose Garden supply closet to say, “You know that Brian Bucknutz kid from Portland Community college who declared for the draft? You might want to take a 2nd round flier on him, I have a feeling that he could be Ricky Rubio-type good, wink wink.”

Travis Outlaw is an alien, but in a good way.

Not completely

Picture this scenario,

Bayless blows up this coming season, he comes in second in the Rookie of the Year voting, (to his teammate Greg Oden!) in a researve guard role of bench scoring. With a 15+ ppg avg, it is clear this guy needs more court time to fullfill his potential. However he doesn’t fit in as well as the PTB would have liked as the point guard of the future. He could still become that player, but his first season didn’t prove anything for sure. Meanwhile…

Outlaw improves on his already good game, upping his scoring to 14 ppg and improving his helpside defense. His man on man defense still needs work however, and his position on the PTB becomes clouded when Rudy Mainia sweeps Portland.

Rudy becomes the key contributer on the second unit, it is he who mans the pg spot during the 4th qtrs next to Roy. His gambling defense is just want the PTB needed to help jump start a fast break that they have needed for years. Oden, Pryz and LMA have allowed Nate to give Rudy the freedom to be very aggressive and it has paid off as Rudy avgs almost 3 steals per contest while putting up 16ppg and 4 apg.

After the season finishes with the Blazers going to the playoffs and losing in the WCF, they are awared their 1st round pick, (#29 overall). KP goes to work, as Ricky declares for the draft after dominating the Euroleague, showing an improved shot, (55% from 2pt, 50% from 3pt) stellar pressure defense, and the court vision he showed in the Olympics playing against men 5-10 years older than him. New Orleans wins the #1 pick after a disaster of a season which saw CP3 go down early in the season only to return after their fate was sealled to the lottory. Not needed another point guard, the Hornets looked to move the pick, and KP comes calling. The biggest need for the Hornets continues to be bench production, so KP offers Jeff Bower a package he can’t refuse. Bayless and (resigned)Outlaw for the #1 pick and Predrag Stojakovic who is on the last year of his deal and his last legs as a player.

The PTB draft Ricky Rubio with the #1 overall pick and have a 3 guard rotation that is the envy of every team in the league, (Ricky, Rudy, and Roy). KP completes his legacy as the worlds greatest drafter/trader/NBA GM with this master piece of a pritchslap, and his(our) PTB reward him with 10 consecutive NBA championships robbing LBJ and CP3 of a championship in their peak years. The NBA is forced to institute new rules to try and slow down the championship winning machine KP has built, but everytime a new rule is issued, the Blazers sign or draft just the right player to over come it. And in 2028 when all of the PTB core players are finished being inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame, KP, Nate and the Portland Trailblazers are ushered into the Hall as well as the greatest of all time, surpassing Red Auerbach and the Boston Celtics.

So you see…it could happen.

Great game!!!

Rudy played an impressive game against Kobe. I have to think that Kobe will be getting plenty of time against Rudy once the season is in full swing. Rudy really gave him trouble in gold medal round.

All there is of the gold medal game video-wise is America-centric jingoistic USA highlights – no good Spanish plays except a strip by Rubio that Kobe gets right back.

My take on the game....

First off, I told ya’ll so, Rudy is the truth. Second, anyone that felt anything except nausea when Kobe hit that 3 and Rudy got that ridiculous foul call, please turn in your blazer fan card for one week. I am actually kind of pissed at Rudy, I was planning on him being my secret to fantasy basketball success this year, but the cat is out of the bag after that amazing performance, good one Rudolpho….

Seriously though, what a great game. Rudy played out of his mind on the offensive end of the floor. He was flat out incredible, I would have loved to see how the game turned out if he was able to stay on the floor. Watching Kobe lead back team USA was gut wrenching, especially that horrific call against Rudy that took him out of the game, but I was really happy for all the other great guys on the team that got gold, and Kobe handled himself well, so its not a terrible thing. Although, I still hate Melo, that guy is a schmuck and I doubt I will ever think otherwise. All in all, it was probably a perfect way for that game to play out, even though it hurt my soul watching Kobe dominate the 4th. Oh well, cheers to the upcoming years….

Rudy's 5th foul

looked pretty ticky-tack to me. I never saw a decent replay to convince me one way or the other, but cant believe the way the game was being called that that one call shouldn’t have been a swallowed whistle.

Its a good lesson though for Rudy, he needs to learn he wont get those calls in the NBA against k*be either.

by bow4meow on Aug 25, 2008 9:56 AM PDT up reply actions

I think that was a good call

Rudy did hit Kobe on the hand, however the 4 other calls he was issued were pretty horrible. But he wasn’t the only one, the calls in that game were amazingly bad, calls like this one on Rudy, (his 5th) were called while a player is clotheslined going down the lane and is told to get up and continue playing. All of my friends and I were laughing everytime a call was made.

by usmcr3049 on Aug 25, 2008 8:44 PM PDT up reply actions

yup

officiating was atrocious, but the terrible calls were more or less evenly distributed between teams. Now its time to be difficult: What vantage point were you watching when you saw Rudy hit Kobe’s hand??? It was a tap on the elbow at the absolute worst. I have rewatched it several times and the only replay on nbc is pretty inconclusive, he may have touched Kobe’s elbow, maybe not. In fact, Kobe commits the same “foul” on Rudy a few minutes earlier and no whistle. The difference between the two plays: One guy was Kobe Bryant(no foul), one was Rudy Fernandez(foul, you’re done), and that is a shame in my opinion…

when I first saw the replay I couldnt believe how Rudy kept floating up higher and higher before ramming it through. Listening to the Russian broadcast was funny, their announcers went crazy and altho I dont speak much russian, Superman is universal.

The commentator says something to the effect of

“Oh, crazy dunk by Rudy. That’s how we know him. Unbelievable. ‘In your face’. That’s good for him. He shows the skills necessary to play in the NBA. The fans in Portland will be happy…about Dwight Howard”.

He must have been as confused as Team USA in that moment. Or he was mocking Dwight, but I don’t think so.

He probably just didn’t finish his sentence correctly and just wanted to tell the viewers that Rudy had dunked over Dwight Howard

Man just watching Rudy 2.0 on youtube gets me so hyped over Rudy coming to Portland. He seems

like such a cool guy, and I like his tough attitude. Can you just imagine, Bayless, Oden, and Fernandez all walking into the gym at the same time. All different personallities, Rudy maybe a little bit of both Bayless and Oden in one. I can see Rudy joking with the guys and still being a fierce competitor on the team. The like Sergio, but they’ll love Rudy.

by BRoyInThe4th on Aug 25, 2008 3:26 AM PDT reply actions

He will be so easy to motivate next year it's not even funny ;-)

Bayless: “Sooo, you just came out second in the Olympics? USA, USA, USA”
Oden: “Fouling out against Kobe, huh?”
Nate: “Yeah, too bad I coordinated the defense for the Redeem Team”
→ Rudy on fire, rebounding, stealing, dunking and dropping triples left and right in training and games.

Albeit I have seen videos where Spain celebrates the silver very much and the press likes it too, so I doubt he has hard feelings against the guys from Team USA.

Rudy's been there before

Loved Rudy’s reaction after the dunk over D-Ho. Nothing. Dunked over the best center in the NBA last year in the gold medal game, and there was no chest thumping, screaming, or celebrating. He just stepped calmly to the free throw line and got his team one point closer. Ice cold.

You know who would’ve reacted exactly the same way? Brandon Roy.

Bayless isn't the second coming of Jordan.
Jordan was the first coming of Bayless.

Rudy VIDEO of 3 pointer over Teshaun Prince

Anyone have a link to that clip? It was so sweet his 4 or 5 between the leg dribbles with Teshaun Prince guarding him & then dropping a deep quick release 3. (lots of jordanesque flash) Loved it. Can’t wait for the season. I’ll play that clip over & over as well, if someone can find it.
