I'm a little scared of hornets - real ones and the ones playing basketball
I’m probably more scared of getting stung by a hornet than of any other insect. Stupid cause they don’t spread infections like some much smaller insects, but still they are so big and buzzing…
And no, venomous spiders are arthropoda and not insects, so they don’t count here.
As for the other Hornets – they just signed versatile guard/forward Devin Brown.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3549380
Together with the addition of Posey and subtraction of Pargo, that makes their backcourt pretty dangerous and the bench deep. They should be even more successful than last year with that roster.

Are you familiar with the
bald faced hornet?
They go straight for your face and I can tell you with first hand experience it feels like you’ve died or wish you would when you get stung. I deflected the sting from my face at the expense of my armpit. Ow ow ow ow ohhhh ouchie.

thems nasty mean little critters
I was raking leaves up and a tree a few weeks ago and went under the leaves to get into the trunk and lifted my head bumping a BFH nest. I got hit twice in the head before I realized what was up. I ran around the house and 50 yards plus to the pump house and they chased me all the way. It was scary. It felt like I got hit upside the head with a baseball bat- literally.

Oh
Once when I was young, a friend and I thought it would be a great idea to huck rocks at a Hornets nest about the size of a basketball. It was so far away that we figured they wouldn’t know where it was coming from. Rrrriiiiigggghhhtttt. Well them things are big, and down right nasty. Like you said like getting hit in the head. Never did that again.

I liked that guy
One of the funniest free throw routines ever. And while never a star he was a solid role player with a good grasp of the game. He was in the running to become the new coach for the Bulls, and will probably end up in some coaching position (head or assistant) soon.

Devin Brown . . . not too bad Hornet's.
That’s a solid signing. Any guy that Spur’s draft, and then trade and then take back again, is guy a I’m going to assume to be a solid player. He’s played sparingly but he can defend and knock down three’s. Can’t have too many of those guys on your team right?

My feelings about the Hornets
I think they overachieved last year. They are a bit too up and down emotionally and I think in the long run it means they will be inconsistent. I think the theory in adding Brown and Posey is that it will help with some calming veteran presence but Posey can be as volatile as any of their other players.
That said, they have tremendous talent and could be real scary. They just have the feel of a team that won’t overcome their emotions in the long run.

Interesting article on Ball Don't Lie about the importance of your backup's backup
And why GMs shouldn’t use washed-up veterans for these jobs: Exhibit A, Jamaal Magloire. http://tinyurl.com/magloire
The backup’s backup counts, especially when the backup in question gets injured. Smart basketball people have been saying this for years – it’s not the backup getting minutes that kills a team after an injury, it’s the backup’s backup. It’s when Eddie Gill is getting minutes in the second quarter. Devean George. Milt Palacio. JAMAAL MAGLOIRE.
I was thinking about turning this topic into a fanpost, but don’t have the material and time right now. Suffice to say I think the Blazers are doing a good job with our “backups’ backups” (as proven last year when Greg went unexpectedly down). A lot of guys on the roster can play two positions in case a starter or his regular backup go down. Of course a position could be weakened if the third guy gets significant minutes (think e.g. SF, where we would either have to use a not-yet-ready Batum as the backup or rotate somebody like Rudy or Frye who is no natural at this spot), but it wouldn’t be horrible due to a player that is a big liability.
And probably that issue of managing minutes correctly and having decent solutions in case of injury problems will be even more important when we are talking about making a run for the championship and not “just” for the playoffs.

Calderon is supposed to have a partial tear of a muscle in his right thigh
The Raptors now expect the Spanish national team to rest him in the finals.
Should mean more playing time for Ricky, Rudy, Navarro and maybe Lopez. Sergio, this would have been your chance to save the day if you had not lost your job to friggin Raul Lopez :-(

Stephen Jackson wants mo money
http://nba.fanhouse.com/2008/08/23/stephen-jackson-feels-underappreciated/
It’s not what I want, it’s what I deserve. “… I won’t be comfortable going into this season knowing I have to play this whole season being the fifth highest-paid and not get an extension. I would not be happy.”
I hope Brandon – underpaid for the next two years – never takes a page out of “The book of head cases, preface by Ron Artest and Stephen Jackson”.

Halftime and despite some bad calls against Luke we have the lead
Id be frustrated too if I was Luke. Philly is purposefully antagonizing Luke with butt-pinches and weiny elbows. No doubt at haltime Gene Shew is going to instruct one of his goons to go after Luke… wouldnt that be a bad mistake?

Season Tickets Question
I opened a Junk Drawer the other day with a question on how season tickets are delivered, traded and used to enter the games, but nothing but crickets responded.
I’d still really like to know – when you get season tickets, do you just get a bunch of them in an envelope before the season or what? How does it work?
