The Nickname Project: Collecting Suggestions for the Starting Guards

The nickname project seeks to find a title that fits every key player on the team, a tag so descriptive and obvious that it comes to mind as readily as the player’s own name.  Since it takes some time for players to establish their NBA identity and for fans to get a handle on them, we’re starting with the established Blazers and putting off newer players until some time around midseason.

Producing monikers for Portland’s probable starting guards is a challenge for opposite reasons.  I think it was Brian Wheeler who dubbed Brandon Roy “The Natural” and it’s a tag that’s caught on.  Can anyone produce a nickname that can compete with it?

In the case of Blake, we’re dealing with a nickname blank slate.  He’s a steady, reliable player who doesn’t excel in any particular aspect of the game, but neither does he have glaring faults.  What title works for him?

In order to reduce nickname suggestions to a reasonable number that we can vote on later, some guidelines:

1) Please stay focused on the two guards for now.  Yes, you may have an array of sizzling sobriquets for Blazer forwards, masterful monikers for the centers, the niftiest of nicknames for all the others, but wait.  We’ll get to them later.

2) Besides offering your own suggested title(s) for a player, be sure to mention the ones that other people offered that you like so that I can figure out which ones are most popular.

3) Although I’ll select most nickname candidates based on their popularity as measured by positive Edger comments, I reserve the right to include others because people made compelling arguments for them or because they seem particularly original, clever or apt.

How about...

Jerryd Bayless – Jerryd Bayless
Brandon Roy – Brandon Roy
Greg Oden – Greg Oden
LaMarcus Aldridge – LaMarcus Aldridge
Steve Blake – Steve Blake

You get the picture.

I guess maybe I shouldn’t have participated, but what if they prefer to just be called, you know, their names?

nickname

I have heard someone refer to Steve Blake as “Snowflake.” I don’t like that, though.

Blake is called "Lieutenant Dan"

After the character in Forrest Gump, cause he is good hearted but has the most temper on the Blazers. An assistant coach named him that way, and it seems to have stuck.

Odenied: Asked whether he noticed Oden favoring his right knee, Frye dismissed it entirely. "He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors."

Wheels is the only guy

who refers to Brandon Roy as “The Natural.”

Brandon Roy is and shall always be known to me as “The Roy-bot.”

It seems pretty clear to

me that when a post like this is put up to create a new nickname for a player or group of players, there is no way it is going to stick. So why do we go through this exercise? Frankly, people in the national media get to decide nicknames because they are the ones who tell the rest of the country.

I wouldn’t mind if “The Natural” was Roy’s nickname, I just have absolutely no control over it whatsoever.

"Jerryd is straight ahead at you. Rudy dips around. Jerryd is a rock. Rudy is the wind. Jerryd loves the ball in his hands. Rudy moves without it. Jerryd defends by getting up in your grill. Rudy plays the spaces in between. Jerryd has focused vision. Rudy sees all around him. Jerryd likes to score off of the dribble. Rudy can catch and shoot. Jerryd is aggressive. Rudy is sneaky. Jerryd will hit you hard. Rudy will annoy you until you hit him." -Dave

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.

OK, that should just about wrap up the goaltending discussion.
