China and the Olympics (OT)
I'm not a big fan of the Chinese Government. To put it bluntly, I think they're downright creepy. The Chinese people seem wonderful, and I harbor no ill will towards them. I found it very heartwarming that they were cheering so publicly for Michael Phelps to win his 8th. Anyway, I digress. I'm really creeped out by the facade they try to project on us (the rest of the world). This is a great ESPN article which lists out some of the things that they have done to project a "Perfect" image of China to the rest of the world during these games. The even creepier thing to me is that they don't try to hide it. That/s so wierd. They're like, "Yeah, we had the cuter girl lyp sync while the ugly one sang because it's not good for China and it's people for the world to see an ugly Chinese girl"... I'm not saying lip syncing doesn't happen here in the states (though I DESPISE, ABSOLUTELY DESPISE lip syncing). It's just wierd to me because we all know the truth of every thing they're trying to hide, yet they still hide it all... And we never would have cared in the first place.

ok dude enough is too much
I come here to read about the PTB. I don’t come here to read gratuitous criticisms of the Chinese government.

ummm....
he clearly marked his post as being off-topic and the subject line was fairly descriptive. don’t click it if you don’t want to.

It's a good match for the Olympics.
I have no problem with it.

I'm actually happy
that the Olympics are making me think a little bit about China, and making the world think more about China, too, beyond as a source of cheap material goods, or simply a source of markets for products (which has tempered official U.S. criticism for sure).
For instance, today I was reading about the two old women (near 80s) who were “detained” after attempting to get a permit to protest that their homes were demolished for the Oympics without just compensation. Detention can mean hard labor.
My mom was telling me that some of the people in the Opening ceremonies practiced for such insanely long periods of time without breaks that some of them wore adult diapers while practicing.
China seems to be improving, and the U.S. is no paragon of virtue, but all of it is interesting to me.
Your poll should have another mellower option or two.

Agreed
When talking about the shady things that the Chinese government does, we shouldn’t forget that the American government (and likely all governments) does their own shady things as well. Granted they are different types of shady things, but they are shady nonetheless.

I expected this from China...
I’m more upset with NBC. They keep playing God with their coverage, deciding what and when they get to show what, all of which is censored enhanced to some degree.
How does that help me believe that they’re credible as a news source, when they are clearly overlooking many things for a buck? More and more stories are coming out about some how this or that was faked and all the schmuks working for the Peacock just let it roll. Seems anti-journalistic to not report the truth and all… but what do I know.
Oh, but hey, you can now buy the DVD of the opening ceremonies (where some of the performers were allegedly put through pretty nasty conditions… link via withleather.com) for a measley $29.99 + s/h!
NBC=SELL OUTS!
