A Little Controversy.... Kobe a Blazer?
I almost cant believe im saying this as a blazer fan.....
what if the blazers picked up kobe bryant as a free agent next summer? pretty sure he's got a player option...
i know, i know....its kobe bryant....probably one of the most hated on around these parts...and for the record, i dont like him much either..... but there's no denying, he is kobe frickin bryant.....
For this to happen, certain things would need to fall into place...should our players start playing to their potential...outlaw improves, bayless kills it, Rudy brings entangibles and quicks, and Oden dominates....should we become a top 4 seed in the west, or in the playoffs knock off the lakers themselves, i could see kobe jumping ship...
Right now Kobe's got one thing on his mind. Cementing his legacy.....Don't think he didn't hear Shaq's freestyle. He knows eyes are watching him....and all he needs is a couple of championships to solidify it.... If Aldridge and Oden outplay Pau and Bynum, don't be surprised.... kobe has already gone on record saying he thinks the blazers this year will be a top 4 seed in the west. so clearly he is impressed by us...kinda all depends how oden pans out. but he is a big magnet...
There's no denying that a backcourt of him and Roy would probly dominate all opponents they face. It'd be like pick your poison....
and yea, i hate kobe too. I really do. But its not out of the relm of possibilities

We don't need him
I’m not morally opposed to it, but it’s really just not necessary and totally not going to happen. Besides, Roy and Kobe play the same position, and have the same role on each respective team. With Roy, it will never happen.

That would be a good kind of redundancy.
I’m not the type who thinks Kobe actually sucks, even though I have chanted it at the Garden before. I wouldn’t want him on the team though, it would be impossible to root for him after hating him for so long.

I don't know.
With Kobe on the team Roy really could run the point full time. Kobe is a good enough defender that he could guard PG’s no problem. He solves every problem we have right now in our backcourt. He is athletic, shoots the three well, defends well, and guarantees that Roy won’t get double teamed. We would probably win 8 titles in a row.
Having said that, I would probably stop being a Blazer fan for those eight years.

I guess we can imagine, but I don’t want to.
1. Kobe wants to play in a big market
2. KP is not a traitor
3. Paul Allen is a smart investor
4. Roy and Kobe would not be able to play together

Paul Allen is actually not a smart investor and that is why he was thinking of selling the Blazers a few years back

If that's not enough
May I remind you how he doesn’t fit into this team’s culture. The number of technicals this guy’s had for whining over calls is just unbelievable. He has a me first attitude, and there’s just way too much of a rivalry and hate between the two.
by dyshooter182 on Aug 19, 2008 1:53 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
culture
is sort of a vague term. I was a huge Kobe hater after the incident, but I guess I am believing the PR hype as I dont think he is that bad now. Does he really get a lot of Ts. I have not noticed that he gets an excessive amount in my opinion and usually it is in flow with the game and not just silly like most of Sheed’s.
In decades past their has been a rivalry but we have not been in each others way for seeding and or playoffs for quite a while so no one on the current roster really has much reason to hate one another or say their is much of a rivalry going on in my opinion. You can point to the LMA v Odom, but those were pretty weak interactions and didnt result in much.
If you want a star they pretty much all whine. That is just how things are these days. After watching a lot of LAL the past few years I can say that Kobe has been a better team player now that some of his supporting cast can knock down a few shots. That all went out the door in the finals, but before that I was really impressed how he was playing in the triangle.

More reasons whyKobe won't be a Blazer
- LA can give him more $$$ and more years
- Winning a championship with Roy, Oden, et al. as teammates won’t satisfy the critics who say that he can’t win anything without Shaq or Roy/Oden.
Those too reasons (especially #1) are why Kobe won’t be a Blazer

I could easier root for the Lakers...
than root for a Blazer team including the most hated of Lakers. OK, that would be a brutal choice. In reality I’d adopt the Hornets or someone. But come on: this guy is truly a jerk, and I don’t enjoy rooting for a team that includes jerks.
Admittedly I’ve turned a blind eye to the character of certain players (e.g., Ruben Patterson). But how can you do that when the person’s jerkiness has been so thoroughly documented? If OJ Simpson made a miraculous middle-aged comeback, could you root for him? If not, then where DO you draw the line? I’ve seen enough from Kobe Bryant that I could never root for his team—even if that were the beloved Blazers. I even rooted for the Celtics in the Finals—that’s how distasteful I find KB. That despite the fact that he’s a fantastic hoopster and I LOVE basketball.

No rapists
Ruben already filled that role (Sure he only forced oral sex but in all practical purposes is just as demeaning to the victim) for the Blazers and we are better off without it.
You can’t have two alphas dogs; given a choice I’d take Roy as he has far better character and really does make his teamates better.

I'm enjoying how everyone is so disgusted about the thought of Kobe, but.....
seriously all KP talks about is the summer of 2009 and cap space. As far as I have seen, and chime in because I know someone will, is their an unrestricted free agent that is worth while to sign other than Kobe?
I just don’t see it, I know Kobe wants a title, but the spotlight of endorsements and fame does not shine so bright in the City of Roses. I’m going to guess this is part of the reason why everybody is commenting that they hate him so much, and the small fact of who he plays for. Personally I could give a rats if he played for the Lakers. I’ll take they’re player win the title and rub it in their face. I think I might even enjoy it more possibly. But like I said unless Kobe is a better person/athlete than I think he is, Portland won’t get a sniff no matter how good we play. I would not be disappointed though if I ate crow on that one.
So I go back to KP and his talk of signing a free agent. Obviously he could have hoped that Chris or Deron were available, but I think it is 1 of 2 things he thinks he has a chance to sign Kobe or he is setting the table for a trade of huge magnitude with our quality of low payed youth with enormous upside combined with our large expiring contracts. To keep all options open while using his famous smoke and mirrors he has played up the signing a free agent thing. When has KP ever gave us a hint of what he was actually going to do. Even with drafting Oden KP played up the whole act of, not knowing which guy he was going to pick. Sure he was going to go through his process, but come on he knew. So I’m really curious of some names Dave might predict coming our way. In not a tidal wave splash, but a splash of title implications, I could see us trading to pick up Tayshaun or Battier as previously discussed in posts.

shawn marion is the only other......
he is a defensive beast…..he can guard anywhere from 1-4…..he helps us get easy transition buckets…
a front court of Marion, Aldridge, and Oden is downright scary…
the athleticism is mind boggling…
my favorite thing about marion is his defensive will…..all that lockerroom stuff is just overtalked. he didnt leave cuz he was unhappy…he left because steve kerr thought shaq gave them a better shot at a title….
if we can, we need to get him

I had that same thought when I saw Kobe has an ETO in 2009 and a player option in 2010
“What if he is the veteran free agent KP targets?” That would be a serious conflict in my mind. We all know he can be a terrible teammate if he feels like it at whim, which is counter to everything the Blazers are trying to represent right now. Yet we also think KP is an amazing GM, what if he thinks Kobe would be the missing piece to get this team to a championship (he can play SG or SF, and both good would be an understatement. And he played his best games in tandem with a dominant center). Could KP even say no if Kobe would like to come to Portland (he is the only known NBA player with an active no-trade clause, so it’s entirely his decision)? I’m pretty certain management and ownership would agree getting one of the top three players in the league is a good thing in terms of on court talent. Would that outweigh his serious shortcomings and lead to the desired results? Would a hugely successful team overshadow any antics as it seems to do in LA, or would it drive away a large part of the fanbase? I can’t say. I don’t feel good about the possibility of Kobe in a Blazers uni, but can’t deny that a reasonable team would have to consider it.

ok
Ok before my post gets destroyd for saying that I want to give a few arguments that it is possible. When its all said and done the team is about winning championships. I dont really hate Kobe because I know someone that has exact character as Bryant, so I can understand him. I just hate him because he plays for the L*kers. I hate that team, so if something is in that team I hate it too, but not on the personal level. I can see Kobe opting out of his contract in summer 2009 to get his last big contract. Plus if he opts out in 2010 he will be older and there is competion with LeBron, Wade, Bosh for good contracts. In 2009 he will easily be the biggest unristricted free agent, so that works better for him to opt out then, than a year later. Plus Bynums agent is theatening to leave if his client wont get a max contract(80 million over 5 years). With that said, it wont happen if the L*kers win the champion next year. I remember Kobe was allways complementive of the Blazers last season. He said that our team has a bright future. I think that Kobe is smart and he can see that if L*akers cant win the ring now, then there is nothing left to do on their roster for a vet like him. Basketball is his job, so he knows who has the most cap space at what time, and where is the best chance to rub it in Shaqs face, and win a ring. I can see the Blazers as the best chance to win a ring, and Kobe likes to play with young guys because they listen( unlike older players that already have an agenda), so it is easy for him to be him self. I dont think that if Kobe would opt out KP would not go after him. On wich player can KP spend the money we will have in 2009, there wont be no Chris Paul, and no Deron williams? I know that Blazers can make a sign and trade with some team, but its as possible that Blazers can sign Bryant. I dont think that he is going to be a problem in the locker room, because our guys will respect him, because they are good guys, and he is a MVP, that won 3 rings. There is no quetion about it that he will be respected on our team(I dont know about our fans, but as soon as we are the best team in the NBA, fans will start to like him, like he was loved in LA). Yeah the only negative is his past. But there is nothing like beating his wife or getting caught with drugs(drugs? everybody wish that drugs got leagal). I heard some one on the radio say that KP has something really big up his sleeve, and that it will really hurt our rivals. So I dont exculed the possibility that Kobe can play on our team. More over I would be ok to get him here, I think that he is good guy that got a little spoiled. I dont really care what fans of other teams will call us if he would be a Blazer.

stealing kobe would cripple the lakers...
leaving the blazers and the hornets amongst the top in the west……
no way CP3 could handle a Kobe/Roy backcourt…who would he gauard on defense….plus kobe would smother him defensively…..CP3 would struggle…especially since oden will take away his patented lob to chandler…..
No team in the east could hang with us……….except maybe the Brooklyn Lebron’s, but Kobe’s star power would offset King James star power…..and we all know Portland is building one of the most complete teams in recent memory….
we could probably win five championships in a row……..

I've said it before
I will turn in my Blazer fan card after 25 years of loyalty to the Blazers, if Kobe were to become a Blazer. KP has always spoken of culture of the team, and Kobe would destroy that culture. I have always been a fan of this team, but never a fan of certain players who are now thankfully gone. If Kobe were to join this team I would end my appreciation of the Blazers. I think that anyone who has been a Blazer fan for more than a few years, or grew up watching the Blazers would agree with me

He can play small forward. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard that we need one of those.
He’s learned that he can’t do it alone and would thrive on the Blazers.

I don't think K@be
will leave the L*kers. They are arguably the top team in the West right NOW, so why would he, in his prime, want to leave the team with the best chance of winning a championship and go to a team that isn’t ready to win yet? I don’t know about you, but having Roy, Aldridge, Oden, Webster, Outlaw, Bayless, and Fernandez to me is already good enough to be a championship mixture, with the right amount of seasoning. Adding K@be would be overkill. Actually, adding any big-time piece to this roster would prolly be overkill. Although, this does lead me towards another thought. With the mix of players we have, is there a possibility that Nate could end up giving minutes like Kryzekwski does to the Team USA roster? In other words, we have a wide enough distribution of talent so that we don’t have to do the traditional starters vs bench players distribution?

As many have already asked, why would we need him?
He would come at the expense of Roy as our go to guy, he would stifle Rudy’s development as well. We already have the offensive pieces that we are going to need.
We don’t need him.
Also, Kobe is a whiner, a ball hog, a cheap shot artist, and an alleged rapist.
Brandon Roy is Brandon Roy.

"Kobe is a whiner, a ball hog, a cheap shot artist, and an alleged rapist."
Aside from that, he’s totally a culture guy!! Not to mention—and I’m not sure anyone has really addressed this—how would you pay this guy’s salary? KP has said that he’s a believer in the San Antonio Spurs’ philosophy of surrounding a Big 3—who you pay big bucks to retain—with affordable guys who will “run thru a wall for you” (i.e., role players).
Why not have a Big 4 or Big 5? Because the payroll would kill you. Getting Kobe would inevitably mean getting rid of Oden, LMA, or Roy—and likely Rudy as well.

I don’t think there are going to be any big free agent signings by the Blazers. They’ll use their cash to pay the rooks market value when it’s time to do that. That and buy a few draft picks…

Am I the only one who has
been favorably impressed with Kobe’s conduct at the Olympics? He’s acting with a lot of class, having stated multiple times how significant it his for him to be there and how competing for an NBA championship doesn’t begin to compare in importance with representing the US on the national Olympic stage. He is also playing some selfless defense on the court. I’ve been way less impressed with some of his big time, hot-dogging, show boating teammates who don’t seem to be treating the experience with anywhere near the same interest and reverence as is Koby. They are just acting like the typical, ego-filled arrogant NBA star.
I can understand why the Chinese fans like Bryant so much.
I’m wondering how many recs this post will get? ( :
P.S. Brandon Roy will be such a wonderful representative for the US in London.
P.S.S. I’m trying to figure out why I am rooting hard for the US in almost every event except for basketball where I’m always rooting for the opposition. I suppose it’s mostly ‘cuz this is such a case of overkill but I suspect it also has something to do with the arrogant NBA star thing mentioned above. I’m a little bit confused though as I am a strong NBA fan, having for time reasons given up on closely following any of the other major sports.
I remember telling him how impressed I was with a player during summer league. In Avery's unique voice, he replied, "Marc, it's summer league." I

Re/ Kobe's admirable conduct @ the Olympics:
He’s always been able to turn on the charm when it’s called for. Which leads to the question: why has Kobe had so many nice things to say about the Blazers lately? Maybe BroyTheTruth is on to something; maybe Kobe hopes to become a Blazer in ‘09, or at least to keep that option open in case the Lakers don’t get over the hump this year.
Personally, I have doubts that these Lakers can win a championship. The front court combo of Gasol, Bynum, and Odom hasn’t played together yet, and I foresee chemistry problems there.

i too have doubts they could win a championship.......
Pau is a little soft….i’m not sold on Bynum……Odom doesnt strike me as a dominant SF……and Fisher is gonna get old.
Kobe’s best shot at a championship would be with Portland……….

Kobe is probably trying to be passive agressive and have Mitch upgrade the team again
with the goodwill that he built up last season he can’t wreck it by going on the radio circuit demanding that the Lakers upgrade their team like he did last offseason.
He can see that the Blazers are going to shorten the Lakers window unless they act now

There are 2 ways of approaching this topic:
1) “Would you want the Blazers to get Coby? Should we?”
Errrmmm . . . no. But I think this post is looking at the other question:
2) “What if they DID get Coby? What then? What do you, as a Blazer fan, do if Blazer = Coby?”
This is where it gets weird.
I cheered this team and franchise through Rider, through Sheed, through Bonzi and Zeebs,
had high hopes for Quntel, Erick Barkley, Gary Trent, and Bassy – I’ve been pretty loyal.
I mean, it’s the TEAM, which transcends individual glory, or infamy as the case is here.
Especially if such a move was followed by championships upon championships.
I mean, what WOULD you think?
Brandon, Coby, LaMardridge, Oden, Nate, Rudy, Trout, Pritchard,
bringing the championship parade down Rose City streets year after year?
Could we feel sour about that?
Well . . . yeah, we could. It’s freaking COBY.
There’s gotta be a Jesus parable in the gospels that could help out here or something.

If Kobe can play the 3
I see no reason not to get him at a Special-One-Time-Only-Rate.
If he mouths off, bench him. If he does anything worse, the soap beating from Full Metal Jacket becomes an option.
No one in the NBA, or on his team, likes the guy, so it’s not like he can really stir up any bad locker-room mojo.
And someone will always want him if we decide to ditch him.
What’s the problem exactly?

I don't know if no one in the NBA likes Kobe
Ronny Turiaf seemed pretty chummy with Kobe in the fake car jumping video

Kobe's mom paid Turiaf to pretend
She’d pay any amount of money if someone would pretend to be nice to Papa Jellybean, but even Kobe doesn’t make that much money.

If Turiaf likes playing with Coby so much, why doesn’t he want more of that?

So this keeps coming up
I’ve decided to finally give it some real thought.
Kobe is the best at what he does.
Kobe has shown some class in the olympics.
Kobe would be a veteran.
Kobe would be the answer to our SF issues.
Snagging Kobe weakens LA and drops the only real competition we have off the map for the next four or five years.
That said.
Roy is our leader and how would Kobe effect that?
Do we NEED a player like Kobe when we have Oden/aldridge/Roy developing?
Would the expense of Kobe be worth the payoff? Kobe wouldn’t be cheap.
Is this counter to the character of the team or has the media blown things up? (they do that)
Would this enrage fans enough to stop buying tickets if we’re winning? (sadly I don’t think so because some kobe fans would convert)
Having Kobe (by another name) in that position would actually be something I’d want. He’s had the chance to be the star and that helps people realize that they need the team. I don’t think you’d have any ball hog issues anymore.
My main worry with Kobe (under a different name) is that he’d overshadow Roy, and we can’t have that no matter what.
Of course, then you say the name Kobe and all that goes out the window.
I honestly don’t believe it’s the end of the world, but it would ruin my joy for two reasons.
1.) Blazer fans have spent so much time investing in hating Kobe, that it would feel wrong to me.
2.) we’ve built this team from the ground up, suddenly spending a ton of money to snag kobe because we can SPAM, feels like cheating. I’d rather earn this championship, not attempt to buy it again.

I forsee only 1 possibility...
…the encounter could create a time paradox, the results of which could cause a chain reaction that would unravel the very fabric of the space time continuum, and destroy the entire universe! Granted, that’s a worse case scenario. The destruction might in fact be very localized, limited to merely our own galaxy.
