Summer League In 10 Parts
Dave just signed a contract to play for the same Italian team as Shawn Kemp. Hot alleyoop action! While we wait for him to sort out his international phone card situation (a Euro costs how much?) check out this guestpost I wrote over at Hardwood Paroxysm. If you've ever wanted to read 10,000 words about crack cocaine, summer league and the Hoover Dam, this is the post for you.
Thanks to HP's Matt Moore who was nice enough to run it.

Nicely done!
Just read your Vegas piece and wanted to commend you on a really beautiful piece of writing. Weaving those three stories to give us an understanding of an area and it’s racial and political history was simply brilliant. Thanks a lot. I feel a little smarter today because of reading it!

nice
it kind like Fear and Loathing mixed with Basket ball
I’m not very good with people. Even when I was little, my imaginary friend would play with the kid across the street. And I’d be like, "I guess we’ll meet up later." And he’d be like, "Whatever, queer." - Daniel Tosh

Nice work, Ben
That’s why I save Blazer’s Edge to read at lunch instead of trying to sneak it in during actual work.

I liked this very much
And I congratulate you on me liking it!
For realz, this was really cool. My brother just moved from Vegas and we often discussed how blatantly racist the city is— like, for reals no kiddin’ racist, not subtle institutionalized racism.
It is a very strange city. My brother hated his time there, and once he graduated from UNLV he high tailed it out.
You captured a time and a feeling of a place and I always love that.

That was a fantastic read, Ben. I don't know why but I just feel
extremely proud of you.

Fantastic!
I couldn’t stop reading. You have a true talent with your way of words. I really enjoyed that.
Way to represent!
As a small piece of constructive criticism, where was the Honor Terry Porter throw in? Kiddin’.

Great work Ben. But I have to quote what has been said about your own previous body of work:
No one should ever, under any circumstances, write a footnoted 3,800-word essay unless they’re getting paid.
- Dan Steinberg, Washington Post
In this case it’s more like 2,800 and just three linked sources, but still a lot of work for a guest post ;-)

Dam good writing (sorry, couldn't resist the bad pun)
I liked this a lot — oodles, heaps and gobs. It reminded me of things I’ve read in one of those “Best Sportswriting” anthologies. Looking forward to more.

Terrific stuff
Ben, I hope we get to see more in this style here at BEdge. That was one of the more thoughtful blog posts I’ve read in the last few weeks.

Hoover dam
I read an article last week that all that water evaporates up through the limestone cliffs and into the atmosphere (not a very efficient water retention/distribution basin, eh?)
Then I heard a radio interview that the weather service has projects where aircraft com-trails “seed” the clouds so it dumps snow in the rockies that feed the Colorado river watershed…so SoCal gets the water instead of midwest farmland

The truest indication that I am reading really great writing...
I found myself visualizing every scene that you wrote about, I was unable to quit reading until I was finished, and I was left wanting more.
Bravo! Encore! Give that man a Pulitzer Prize!
Hey Ben, have you ever written a book?
