Luke Jackson for the 15th Roster Spot?
Word on the street is that the Blazers are considering Luke Jackson and one other player (Steven Hill maybe?) for the 15th roster spot. I have no link because Luke told my roomate this himself. I usually don't float word of mouth rumors on BEdge but I thought this was a little juicy tidbit to discuss.
Luke has the talent, character and dedication to find a home in the NBA. He has just had serious injury issues since being drafted by the Cavs (he was a lottery pick.) This could make sense if he truly can play the SG position with Roy possibly being out early in the season. I'm guessing he would be offered a very cheap, easily bought out contract. He could also be thrown in with any RLEC trade midseason to free up the roster spot. So does signing him make sense? Could Luke Jackson be our new Von Wafer?

I wanted us to draft
him when he came out. He would be a great character guy. He has a great B-Ball IQ. I think he’d be a great fit. He can shoot the lights out too. And I HATE the Ducks.
My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

hmmmmmmm
no….i think Petteri is better than Luke and definitely has more pontential. I also think the Blazers are saving the spot for a trade where they may have to take an extra scrub

I don't really buy into the "we have to save the last spot for a trade" theory
It’s not like they couldn’t waive a non-core 15th player a la Jackson, Wafer, Hill, … if a great trade comes around at the deadline. Other teams are doing it all the time.

true and i agree
but I mean really does it make sense to sign Luke Jackson who has no real future or Petteri who at least has the potential to be good. I will be pissed if the Blazers sign a crappy scrub in the place of Petteri. So i guess it’s just that’s what i want to believe

Apples and Oranges
Of course we wouldn’t want to waive Petteri for a trade and he has a gaurenteed contract. Luke Jackson is just insurance and a project who could get waived like Norsktroll said. Petteri needs to be brought over when he has a legitimate chance of cracking the rotation during his rookie contract. It’s not “in place” of Petteri because we retain his rights and can bring him over later when he has actually developed into a player who deserves minutes Remember that a player only is eligible for the D-league for their first couple years. Petteri has legit talent, but he has a great deal of work to do (see Sergio.)

in a way but we could sign Petteri and play him in the d league
and then cut Sergio. Yeah, I said it. I’m totally ok with cutting Sergio or trading him for a second rounder or two.

Gotchya
But why not wait on Petteri and see how Sergio develops throughout his rookie contract? We retain Petteri’s rights for quite some time and from the looks of it, he has true NBA aspirations. I’m just not sure what cutting sergio for Petteri does for us short term or long term.

because even if Sergio develops he's going to be a run and gun
fast break low defense point guard. That kind of guard doesn’t get a lot of playing time in Nate’s system so we might as well move him for a least a couple of draft picks instead of letting him walk like he probably will at the end of his contract. Long term i think it allows Petteri to train against NBA-type players. I see the D-league as NBA a type players who aren’t nearly as good, while Euroleague play a pretty different type of game. I also thin Petteri game style could get a lot more playing time on a team run by Nate

besides
Gary Payton who has Nate had that is good defensive point or even a good point guard for that matter. Behind Payton I can only think of Antonio Daniels and he is more of a combo. So I guess I would say Nate does not have a ‘type’ of point guard at this point in his coaching career.

while he may not have a specific types i would definitely say he plays
bigger/“defensive” (defensive is in quotes for a reason) type points guards. Guys like Payton, Daniels even Jarret Jack. This is why I think Bayless will fit well.

The guys on Team USA must get confused
Mike D’Antoni vs. Nate McMillan as assistant coaches are like night and day. Plus Coach K who would stop every fast break and call in his directions if he could ;-)

I would say
that Daniels was more out of necessity as that team lacked any experienced pg
Nate did not use JJ as a point last year when he had the option not to. Also, Daniels and Jack’s defense has been suspect.
Bayless will probably not be used as a pg. His only pg esque duty will be to bring the ball up. I doubt he will initiate the offense much

I do like what I have seen of him
But with the log jam at 1 and 2 already its hard to see how this works
by southern oregon on Aug 15, 2008 4:51 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
yeah
hard to see where his minutes would come (although isn’t he a 2/3 as opposed to a 1/2?).
I’d be fine with this— my reaction would be “eh, if it makes Duck fan happy, then fine,” but it wouldn’t excite me or anything.

The Blazers should alway have a Duck on the roster
I’m all for it. Maybe he’s another “fallen angel.” I’d rather have him than another point guard. I wouldn’t mind him as the 11th guy off the bench. I still think we need another big guy just for practice against Oden.

the blazers should never have local atheletes
because fans become way to attached to them for example Dickau and Fred Jones.

Strangely...
…there wasn’t the same outpouring for Damon Stoudamire – even after he turned his life around.
by DonkeyShins on Aug 15, 2008 10:53 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
i was thinking about the Damon when i wrote that
and i think it’s because high school athletes are harder for fans to connect with so players that played at Oregon or Oregon State or PSU or even Gonzaga have more connection with local fans. I don’t really know, but thats my theory

I guess people fell out of love with Damon
because they associated him, rightly or wrongly, with the “Jail Blazers”. I’m sorry I didn’t mention him.

I just hated how dumb he was.

That's because of Damon's game
Which he doesn’t have one of.
No D, dribbles for 20 seconds and shoots. A point guard that can’t pass. As long as he’s on SA they will never win it all again.

In all seriousness, the guy had a lot of heart and was a great offensive player. He’s washed up now but he gave the best years of his career to us, gotta respect him for that.

I have a soft spot for LJ
Or, as a Cal sports writer referred to him, “The Taller Hobbit” (the shorter one was Ridnour).
LJ has length, good court vision, a solid midrange shot, and great b-ball IQ, as folks have already mentined. I fear that he does not quite have the athleticism to cut it in the NBA, but I think that he deserves another lick at the golden apple. He might find a niche somewhere along the lines of a better-shooting Luke Walton.
And team managment has a surplus of good will with the fanbase, so if he does not pan out, they can send Luke out of town on the RLEC train.

Luke (and Luke?)
I watched all kinds of Duck basketball during the two Lukes’ tenures… They are class acts. I’ve always wondered why Luke Ridnour fell out of favor with the Sonics. Talk about a guy who can dish! I’d love to see both of them join the Blazers. But the organization has an embarrassment of riches – pretty crowded roster right now. I’d love to see these two brought in as tremendous role players

If someone is a fan of Luke Jackson
They should hope with all of their heart he does NOT become a Blazer. That would be a surefire way he shows no one what he can do out on the court because he will play zero point zero zero zero zero zero minutes.
In fact, if he DID ever play, I would be upset. Put in Batum, get Webster more shots, play Sergio, etc.
There’s no room for him and if Jackson has recovered from his injuries and is good again, he needs to go somewhere where they need a wing shooter for the sake of his career. Just being the 15th man for the Blazers, and possibly easily cut if we need to make room, puts him right back where he started.
So if you’re a fan of the man, the myth, the legendary Luke Jackson, hope for him to go where he is needed.

From a practice body standpoint...
If you were to group everyone into 3 teams in a practice setting for scrimmages, and you consider LaFrentz a C and Bayless a 1, SG is the only other position on the team where we aren’t 3 deep. Consider:
Blake
Roy
Webster
Aldridge
Oden
Bayless
Rudy
Outlaw
Frye
Przybilla
Sergio
—-
Batum
Diogu
LaFrentz
The notion that Luke also can play the 3 would fall in line with this theory.

Luke Jackson on the RED team
I get it now!!!
I could agree with this because I like LJ. He got his career cut short but injuries. He understands that he won’t be the guy and that if he can stick in the NBA for five minutes he’ll take it even though he might get cut.
If he was smart he would just go to Europe and dominate for big money than sit around in the D league in hopes that he can recapture the imagined glory he once almost had.
that or work his way up from our 15th guy to our #1 superstar from Creswell.

Irrelevant.
Sure sign him he is a nice guy. The only way he plays is if every one of our guards or small forwards get injured at the exact same time. I don’t really care. I just hope he wears number 8 because that is my lucky number and we have the same last name.

Yeah yeah, he was injured a lot, whatever. What did he ever do when he was healthy? (Yes, wasn’t perpetually injured.)

He hasn't done anything in the NBA, but he did this
…no way to overstate the impact of player scoring 31 of his team’s final 33 points in a postseason game, as Jackson did Wednesday night, including 29 consecutive points for the Ducks, their final 17 of regulation and the first 12 of overtime.
`The single best performance that I’ve ever seen in athletics,’ UO coach Ernie Kent said. `That was an amazing feat. That’s something that should be talked about all across the country (on Thursday), but unfortunately we’re here in the West and the people in the East were sleeping and they probably don’t have a clue about what went on out here.’

If I recall, he went off for a crap-load of threes in one of his first summer league games back from injuy last year . . .
and Miami singned him really quick like. They thought he could be a cheap replacement for Jason Kappono. I followed the box scores for a bit after he signed with them, and he didn’t do much and wasn’t able to stick. Granted, I’m a Luke Jackson fan in general and I’m probably a little biased, but I can’t think of another person I would want more as the last guy on the team. The guy just a basketball player, pure and simple. Total gym rat. He knows how to play the game. Very exciting rumor. I hope it’s true.
Anybody recall that NIT Tournament game at Mac Court against Colorado? If I remember correctly, I thinkDavid Harrison was on that team. Anyway, I was there at the Pit and I just remember Luke Jackson aboslutely willing us to victory. I didn’t even know just how dominant he was until after the game. I was listening to the radio in the car, and they said he scored like 34 of the Ducks 37 points in the second half or something ridiculous like that. Great times. That was actually the last Duck basketball game I’ve been to :(
