The "I love Rudy Fernandez" thread
Time to let it out...All you Rudy lovers it's time to step forward. What is is that gets us all so excited about Rudy? What do you expect from him next season? Is he the type of player who can change the complection of games? And is any one else already stoked imagining the roar of the Rose Garden crowd yelling....Rudy! Rudy! Rudy!?
Personally, I'm more than already sold...Rudy is the man...granted, i didnt see his sub par performance the other night, 3 or 4 points or so (sounded more like a rest). But from what ive seen in the pre-olympics, and his outings against greece and china, I'm more than convinced he is ready for NBA ball....21 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, in 34 minutes while shooting 50% field goal shooting versus China..Talk about a guy who does everything. Pretty sure he also had a block and a couple steals... and yea, he can D up.
So while Naysayers seem concerned over our shooting guard query and where he'll find minutes, I'm willing to make the claim, he already has his nitche. Rudy is an energy guy, coming to a team that lacks energy guys having subtracted Jarret Jack this offseason. He is clearly a team player...Look at his entry passes to the post, or his ability to lead the fast break....What he is, is another shooting guard that plays like a point guard. Watching him even briefly, its clear he brings that mentality to the game.....Except he also carries himself with more energy than Brandon.
Thats maybe the most obvious part about his game. Rudy is constant energy in motion..watch him back door cut his man. or float on defense looking for steals, than quickly recover. watch him come in from out of nowhere for an offensive putback...the dude is legit.....and he's always moving......why stand around when theres points to be scored?that's his mentality....and his handles are better than most think...He's got the stutter dribble down, and often uses it to put defenses on edge..opposing defenders than have to respect it cuz his shot is built on such a lightning release.
Defensively, he has even left me impressed. Especially with all the anti-hype going around over this part of his game....People talk up Rubio and his quick feet defending the point position, but from what ive seen Rudy almost does it more effectively..That guy from greece, he torched Rubio with his strength every time he put it on the floor. Couldnt do that against Rudy though.... and while people question his risk taking, going for steals, leaving him out of position..that's one facet of the game the blazers desperately need. Someone to pressure the passing lanes on the perimeter..like how boston does. He's shown me he can do it.....We need guys to create steals that lead to easy transition....And should he get overambitous, there's a couple big guys foritifying our back line that should give him time to get back in position...........And he's wirey on defense, kinda like Ginobli. We've been missing that type of intensity on that side of the ball..
I'm one to believe that Rudy Fernandez future is bright.......And i cant wait to see his light shine in Portland! Viva Rudy!

Rudy puts his pants on one leg at a time like everyone else
Except after he puts his pants on he drops 20 points on you.

Also, Rudy can guard most PG's
guys like Mike Bibby, Chauncey, Farmar, even the ever aging Nash………. he’ll stack up fine…
There’s only gonna be a few that cause problems…Parker, CP3, and Deron….but they cause problems for everybody……
I like our chances with a line up of
Roy
Rudy
Travis
Lamarcus
Oden
Roy and Rudy can take turns intiatiating the offense. And Rudy can hustle like hell against the other teams PG……teams better start watchin the back door

I dunno
I still think he’s going to struggle guarding more PGs than you think. The four you mentioned: Bibby, Billups, Farmar, Nash, I think he would have serious trouble staying in front of these guys on the offensive end.

Really? Hmm . . .
Based on what I’ve seen, and granted I’ve only watched three games, I assumed that any notions people had about him being a “PG” were put to rest. He’s not a terrific ball handler and he makes poor decisions with the ball quite often when he’s trying to facilitate. Yes, I have seen him make some very nice passes, but I’ve seen him make many more ill-advised passes. I don’t think there’s any chance that he can guard “most Pg’s” in this league. I think it will be great to have Rudy on the team next year, but based on what I’ve seen, I think he has a long way to go before he’s a high level NBA player. I’m predicting a lot of growing pains for him next year.

i think he could guard Calderon
and everybody seemed pretty hyped on him…… look at the difference in their impacts in the olympics….Its not for lack of minutes, Rudy is just better
by BroyTheTruth on Aug 15, 2008 3:39 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
it's not a direct comparison. rubio backs up calderon.
I think your crazy at this point, and after the season that Calderon just had, to say that Rudy is “better”. Calderon isn’t “hype”, he’s proven in the NBA over the course of a full season to be a top-teir point guard. Their game’s are completely different. And I’m not sure why you think Rudy could guard Calderon.

quit being negative....
this is the “i love rudy” post……i say it because , rudy has outplayed calderon thus far in the olympics
by BroyTheTruth on Aug 15, 2008 3:57 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
from what ive seen....
i’d take rudy over calderon anyday
by BroyTheTruth on Aug 15, 2008 3:59 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would like to assume you've watched the games and seen the box scores . . .
But it you had, you would know that Fernandez and Calderon both played well against Greece, Fernandez well and Caleron poorly against China, and Calderon well and Fernandez poorly against Germany. So, I’m not sure how you’ve arrived at the conclusion that Rudy is outplaying Calderon thus far in these Olympics.
I’m not trying to be negative, but you’re forcing me into it with ridiculous statements. As for taking Rudy over Calderon anyday . . . I’m not sure I would agree. I think everybody is in consensus that the one thing we really need on this team is a solid point guard. We were very, very interested in getting Calderon this offseason but alas, the Raptors would not part with him. I don’t want this to be a Calderon vs. Fernandez debate, but it seems to be what you’re intent on making it.
IM EXCITED FOR RUDY FERNANDEZ TO PLAY. I don’t think he’s going to be a “PG”, or guarding the other teams PG’s or really running the offense in any kind of way for extended stretches.
by noaher on Aug 15, 2008 4:19 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
agree with that last bit
but it seems to me too many people on this board are looking for the perfect fit for every position.
Rudy will need time to adjust to the NBA. It looks like he will be Roy’s backup, as opposed to Bayless who will complement Roy and play a bit at both 1 and 2.
If Rudy can get 12 minutes a game, be that spark plug off the bench, and show competent defensive, he’ll make a place for himself on the time.
My bigger concern with Rudy is playing time. While I don’t think he has a bad attitude, he has indicated he will be vocal if not given playing time. That’s a tall order for Roy’s backup, but given Roy’s history, that may be the most important backup role on the team.
My best-case scenario for Rudy is him being so good as backup 2 that he forces Roy’s minutes into the 33-35 minute per game zone. That’s good for everyone.

Rudy has like three times as many assists
as calderon in about the same amount of play………..he also scores more…. you tell me who is the better playmaker?

Rudy is much better at 23 than Calderon was at 23
comparing their achievements in Spanish ACB at this age.

I think it is important to pigeonhole him as soon as possible.
I like that he can tell if a shot is not going to go in and he gets his body to where the ball will go.
I don’t like that he does all sorts of no look passes to teammates that don’t expect them. If the Blazers, especially Oden, learn to anticipate those passes, they will be a lot of fun to watch.

Rudy's hustle is my favorite thing about him.
He’s done some bad passes, and some great ones. Gasol is just too slow to catch on for the great ones.

Rudy reminds me
Of a guy I used to play with, constant blur of high speed without the ball and a quick release.I loved playing with him because it made life so much harder and confusing for the defense thus easier for me,its one of those things that dont show up in the stats

Some serious questions you are ignoring
The “anti-hype” that we “naysayers” are are talking about is not that Rudy can’t play, it is that Rudy doesn’t really seem to fit in with our already stacked lineup.
Okay, he is a fantastic offensive player and flashy as heck, but the fact is that we already have a ton of talented players that have been carefully singled out to get us to the promised land. What Kevin Pritchard has assembled is a thing of beauty. Every player on the team makes sense to me, except one: Rudy Fernandez.
I honestly don’t see where he fits in.
Don’t kid yourself, Roy is our man and will be commanding most of the minutes at the shooting guard spot. He is not a point guard even though he is comfortable running the offense. He has stated that he is more effective at the 2, so unless Roy gets injured I don’t see a lot of playing time for Fernandez. Bayless will also be able to switch back and forth, and has displayed the hustle on both ends that Nate loves. Blake will most likely be our starter at the point with Bayless taking over Jack’s second and fourth quarter minutes at the point.
Fernandez is not going to see any time at the three. Not if we want to win games. His defense is atrocious and he doesn’t have the size. Lebron would kill him, and Nate is not going to stand for it. Forget about it.
I am not trying to “hate” on Rudy, and I hope that he does become a great player. I just want to see whether he fits in with this team before I jump on the Rudy bandwagon.

You could say the same thing about Rex
or Oden for that matter. If Rudy can play…..there will be a place for him to play

Rudy's defense is atrocious?
I disagree. He certainly isn’t a lock-you-down guy but he gets steals, deflects passes and makes plays. You are right that LeBron would kill him, which makes Rudy just like every other NBA player.
In certain situations, Rudy can play 2 with Roy at the 1. In other situations, Rudy can play 3 on offense and guard the 2 on D (Roy has shown the ability to do a solid job on some very good NBA 3s such as Carmelo). Rudy can also play a more traditional SG role while Roy gets his 8-10 minutes a game on the bench. There are ways to make it work. Once Rudy shows he can help the team win (might take him a while, but he has the ability), Nate will find ways to get him on the court.

That Martell or Travis can lockdown on Lebron because they are popular home boys.

If Rudy develops like I think he will, Bayless will want to play elsewhere long term because he doesn't see the floor enough
Just my two cents. That’s how much I love Rudy.

I disagree
If Rudy develops like we think he will, Roy will only have to play 30 mpg (extending his career) and we’ll see a guard lineup for 5-10 mpg that teams will simply be unable to matchup against.

these questions
about him defending elite players is pointless – there’s no one in the league that can really guard/lock down Lebron, CP3, Parker, etc. What’s a lot more important to me is how he fits in with the team defensive schemes, because that’s the way you stop those superstars from slicing up your team. The fact that he is so active without the ball, on both ends of the floor, is really encouraging though – seems he actually gives a crap about defense.
I also think once he starts hitting the weights and bulks up a little he’ll be able to guard a lot of 3s in the league, which will give us even more flexibility.
I need to fly up for at least one game just so I can hear the “RUDY! RUDY! RUDY!” chant in person =).

I agree...
talking down about a player just because he can’t guard an elite player is ridiculous. If it wasn’t almost impossible to guard them, they wouldn’t be “Elite” players. Right?
Rudy will do just fine here in Portland, and I can’t wait to see it happen.

I like that he is Spanish. He has the cosmopolitan flair. He makes basketball beautiful again. That is a very rare commodity and should earn Rudy 8-digit endorsements. He is the one true rock star. sigh…..
