Junk Drawer -- August 15, 2008
Another day, another drawer. So what's everyone been up to this summer? Anyone do any fun, out-of-the-ordinary stuff?
We went and hung out with some friends up near Seattle yesterday...dang Washington has a lot of trees! I know why they call it the evergreen state...at least up near Seattle anyway. Eastern and southern Wash. are a complete desert.....
Anyway, Channing has another post over at his blog...he seems pretty cool. He's really growing on me...I hope he stays around for a while.
And now, a day in the life of a celebrity, Mister TominHawaii
5:00 AM = everything from 5:00-5:59AM. 7:00 AM = everything from 7:00-7:59 AM. So on and so forth.
You think the Olympians have a tough training schedule, just look at that mad blogging yesterday. . Sign this guy to a max contract ASAP...before he goes to Europe.
.
Oh yeah, last thing. This is where all your randomness for the day goes.
And wait, one more last thing. MiledAnimal popped this in the fanshots (you know, those things wayyyy down on the right hand side below fanposts)...an article about the Blazers winning the PRISM award. Interesting read.

Could these sensations make me feel the pleasures of a normal man?
These sensations barely interest me for another day,
Ive got the spirit, lose the feeling, take the shock away.

Nate talks Sonics move
Forgive me if this is already posted 2 dozen times. Link to article in which Nate discusses both his retired jersey and the ability for Sonics fans to “Come on Down!!” to be new Blazer fans.
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/stevekelley/2008109571_kelley13.html
And I don’t know if this has been posted because the traffic here is insane. It’s August, on a basketball blog, and there’s dozens of mainposts / fanposts everyday, with thousands of comments…is this the most active sports blog around or what?
I came on down. And I aint leavin'.
I came on down to be a Blazer fan. Moved my loyalty down south, and moved on from the bitterness of the Sonics move. I am down win or lose with my Blazers.

I love Olympics gymnastics but damnit the fact it is subjective drives me batty
Batty=funny word. Ok, back to point, the starting values are crap they need to re-do the scoring system for gymnastics. I love how so many gymnasts made noticeable mistakes and the American chica lands perfect routine after perfect routine and gets the score SHAFT :( Ugh..
SOphia
PS last rant…thanks a lot dave

Don't they
Kinda sorta “agree on” a base score and then the gymnast gets scored with how well they stuck to the routine PLUS the agreed upon difficulty of the routine?
So perfect routine but not a difficult routine sometimes is less points than a not-perfect routine, extremely hard routine?
Sometimes?
I’m not sure how it works but I hate hate hate the subjective scoring as well, if I am not missing something.
MOrtimer
Yes
Starting value are the points awarded per difficult element. So if a piroet (sp?) is included on the beam +.2 double back layout twist +.5 so on and so forth. The problem is w/ the starting value is that they are adjusted per routine. So really they aren’t equal. I cant find the link but Bela Caroli, the ex coach for team usa and current coach’s spouse was ranting and raving about the horrible judging. Ok he’s a total Homer but sheesh…

I think Shawn Johnson got ripped off last night on a couple of her things.
She doesn’t even bobble and sticks a perfect landing and she was getting like 9.0s. Those should have been 9.5 or better on the execution.

Did you hear
About Pargo going to Euro?any thing that makes the Hornets weaker would by definition be a good thing
by southern oregon on Aug 15, 2008 10:19 AM PDT reply actions
I didn't hear
Is it a bargaining ploy or does he have actual offers?
I can’t remember any other backup PG for the Hornies, and their bench scoring was mostly done by him as well. Both important roles lost if Pargo say bye bye. Makes me assume it’s a bargaining ploy… but I dunno cause I don’t follow it closely.
Mortimer
I thought he had offers from the Spurs (for the bi-annual exception) and maybe Phoenix (for a part of the MLE)
Odenied: Asked whether he noticed Oden favoring his right knee, Frye dismissed it entirely. "He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors."
I think it's almost definite
“New Orleans Hornets free agent guard Jannero Pargo, a valued sixth man, has reached an agreement in principle with Moscow Dynamo on a one-year contract worth about $4 million, sources close to the negotiations told Yahoo! Sports. Some details still needed to be worked out Friday before the contract could be finalized, but sources said there were no hurdles left that should jeopardize the deal…Pargo, 28, had developed into a dangerous bench scorer for the Hornets and attracted the interest of several teams, including the San Antonio Spurs and Atlanta Hawks. New Orleans wanted to keep him – and Pargo’s preference was to stay – but the Hornets had invested too much available money in free agent James Posey to make a strong enough bid. The lure of guaranteed money in Russia trumped the most serious bids made by the Spurs and Hawks.” -Adrian Wojnarowski, Yahoo! Sports

Whoa cool
Good for Pargo, good money!
And good for us, because unless I am just dumb (which in this instance could be true) the Hornets ain’t got no other real back up PG; and while Pargo wasn’t a real PG and just scored, he’d get hot some games and nuthin’ could stop him, no way no how.
Who is left that can play PG for cheap and be dependable for a good team?
Not to overvalue Pargo of course, but that was a weak bench even with Posey and Pargo could at least dribble the ball and get hot every few games.

What's the record on being waived in one season?
Poor Bobby Jones has been waived by the Miami Heat, ten days after being claimed off waivers by them. He was waived by the New York Knicks on July 29, after having been traded together with Taurean Green from Denver to NY for Balkman.
This year alone, he was already under contract for the Denver Nuggets, Memphis Grizzlies, Houston Rockets, Miami Heat (twice), Sioux Falls Skyforce and San Antonio Spurs.

Banana vs. Stoplight, a critical analysis.
With a stoplight, green means go, yellow means hold on, and red means stop.
With a banana it’s a different story:
Green means hold on,
Yellow means go ahead,
Red means where the F did you get that banana at?

Well darn ya
The Jed Smith party and the Olinger farm sure ring the ol’ bell. I will have to research the Stouts grove reference.
Ma Mom’s family are Menonites (the Yoders & Eglis) from ‘tween that area (Molalla/Canby).
I met Don in the "Boiler Room" at Reed college where my bud Steve was dormin’. He wanted to show me some cannabis he had sproutin’ ina planter outside his window and it’s amazin’ properties. I was more interested in biogenetics and in need of Lysergic acid diethylamide to persue my studies.
Mr. Berry picked me up once mo’ in his VW bus, when my girl friend and I where hitchin to the coast after a Ravi Shankar performance at the Portland Arts Center.
I remember he was wearin’ leather mocs/mucalucs up to his knees. Pointed out the cabin (somewhere ‘tween Lee’s Camp ‘n The Jordan Creek Bachelors Club, wheee him ‘n his family had lived while he was writin’, getting’ the feel ‘n livin’ off’n the land. Asked me if I had ever kilt a deer. Told ‘em no, cause I hadn’t. Told me to think a lil ‘bout what I was doing, if I ever did. I did ‘n I always thought about it. GF was a ‘mook.
Lived ona banks o’ da Wilson River by Alice’s Restaurant, where N***** Jack Creek (still has the N word on my Forestry Maps, some call it Black, pretty sure he once lived there an that’s what that’s what we called ‘em) dumps in. A big ol’ gravel bar and the crawdads where scrumptious.
Now I live ina Stump, just like ona Don’s charracters but I gots internet connections!

Read Berry's book many years ago, and loved it
Saturday on the Trask was possibly the best day I’ve ever spent fishing ever. The river was beautiful, we had access to private land with some great river front, the weather was spectacular, my cast, for once did not resemble and old lady fighting off bees with a broomstick, i was dropping these itty bity flies any place wanted, like magic, and I lost count of the number of fish I caught for the first time in my life.
