Who Will You Root For? USA? Spain? Rudy?

With the highly anticipated USA vs. Spain game coming up we Portland fans face a difficult choice:

Who the heck do we root for?

Team Redeem (with no Portland players)?

Spain?

Rudy?

The patriot in me says, "it's wrong not to root for the US!"

The Portlander in me says, "who cares about the US. It's all about Por-lan and Rudy"

Whoever you root for, I'm hoping for at least a great game.

So who are you rooting for? Why?

If Spain wins...

Rudy better be the primary factor.

Ditto that.

I don’t dislike my country, but the coolest thing was being at the Miami airport surrounded by Puerto Ricans when Puerto Rico beat the USA in basketball four years ago. Amazing eruption!

I dont think Espana

Has enough wood for them unless Marc learns to play D in the next few days but I was behind Greece against the arrogant kings of bling last time and in no way consider that unpatriotic.

USA USA USA

I don’t think it’s automatically unpatriotic to not root for the US team if they’re a bunch of punks that you don’t want to represent you… but I don’t feel that way about this team.

but only if rudy can drop like 30 on kobe…..otherwise, id like to see lebron bring back the US gold

I want Rudy to drop 25+

and then have the US beat them in a narrow victory.

Also, I want to see Pau Gasol shut down.

I wouldn't mind...

Having Rudy be the one player that we (as in Americans, it seems that some have forgotten) can’t shut down.

But have USA still win by 35.

I love the Blazers as much as anyone, I’m drunk off the Blazer Kool-aid too. I would vote for Roy and Oden as Pres/VP of anything (either being President). But in no way will I ever root for ANY country EVER to smack around a team that’s representing the United States. Rudy or no Rudy.

P.S. It would be a failure for the Blazers if USA lost. They’re being coached by Nate. They practiced against LMA and Bayless. That means more to me than a guy who hasn’t played a single minute in the NBA wearing a Blazers jersey.

I´ll root for Spain. They have a minimal possibility, David against Goliath.

The US team is awesome and amazing and they deserve all the good
adjetives you can add. The rest of the World feels like playing against superheroes, like these guys swimming against Phels. If they don´t win I´ll consider it almost an accident. I´m interested about Rudy and Ricky performances. It´s gonna be hard for both of them because coaches have started to do special work to stop them and exploit their faults as they are very important pieces in the Spanish coach´s systems.

Ricky has impressed me....

on the defensive side of the ball more so than on offense. Unlike Rudy, Rubio uses his foots speed to stay in front of his man. He’s been extremely pesky to opposing PGs. It’s going to be interesting to see how he does against CP13 and DW.

Someone else?

Like everybody and their brother I think the US WILL win gold, but I would find it more funny if some other nation does and changes in the way the US team is constructed and prepared for an international event continue. Right now, they already feel too entitled again.

Preferably that nation shouldn’t be Argentina though. I hate Spurs fans shoving the brilliance of Ginobili & Co. in my face. I have been enlightened to believe that Rudy one day will be bigger than MJ (thanky, myemic23). Ginobili is not, period!

Yes it is, and I don’t mean to belittle it. I’m just not one who leans on nationalism when it comes to the Olympics. I love the competition regardless of who is performing.

I guess that sounds like I’m on some sort of a high horse. It isn’t meant to.

I find myself cheering a great performance no matter what the nationality. Ultimately, to me, the Olympics is a celebration of humans doing athletic feats extremely well. A beautiful thing to see no matter the nationality or ethnicity. I sort of adopt favorites as I go along. Often they’re Americans and often they aren’t.

The Spanish coach strategy:

"We can win to the US team not allowing that they crush us with their physical power in the one on one defense. We should try to get fouls when they press much on defense, doing penetrations without losing the ball, and in defense we have to play team defense because to stop them individually is impossible. We have more habit than they have, they do a more physical pressure, but individually ".

The USA is the L*kers of the Olympics

I haven’t rooted for the US team in the Olympics since ‘76 and haven’t even watched summer Olympics since ’92.

U.S. Olympic teams are arrogant jerks. The fans chanting “USA! USA!” don’t pump me up — they remind me of the mob at … how do I put this tactfully … an ultra-nationalist rally. The US media rarely show events where they don’t think Americans will win a gold medal. We have turned the whole event into a nationalist orgy, instead of a celebration of the people and athletes and countries of the world. So in fact, if I were watching, I would be rooting for people not countries — largely against the US and for various athletes I happen to take a liking to.

If I were watching this game, I’d root for Rudy and Spain.

by Kaboomm on Aug 15, 2008 5:58 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I too root for some people rather than countries...

I find the attitude of team USA sometimes very inapropriate, like, for instance, when some players (like LeBron) were doing a military salute after putting some baskets in… I was very embarassed trying to tell my friends that my favorite players were not patriotic stupid jerks.

by Blenzer on Aug 15, 2008 6:17 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I´ve heard some people were offended in Japan but I think the gest were in the "suporting our troops" mode.

Not offense intended and the nationalist reactions happens worldwide and more frequently and intensely if you have good reasons to be proud of your country, as US citizens have. Patriotism also have made a lot of good things and a lot of horrible things to humans but it´s how the World has been rolling and still rolls. It would be wonderful if all people and governments could understand how to roll correctly.
We Europeans in this blog should not come here and talk about the US citizens/Government/etc nationalism or whatever politics or social behavior. I can call stupid to my brother but I won´t like if you do it, if you know what I mean, my friend. We have enough with defending our own behavior in a place where we are the exceptions and very friendly received. Probably much better than our compatriots might do.

I consider my brother

everyone, I don’t feel closer to a euro cause I’m one myself than to an american, asian, african or whatever…
I feel free to speak about what shocks or deceives me.
I really don’t think sports men have anything to do with military things.
To sum up, I’d say that stupidity is of course an international thing, and that it would be against my principles to only denounce it when it’s coming from where I come, as I don’t feel closer to my fellow euros…
Still it’s pretty evident to me that I didn’t say anything against americans, just against some players’ poor actions that certainly have no place on a basket-ball court, and I don’t think criticism can only come from one’s side, rather that it’s more enlightening when it’s coming from anywhere.

Imagine a world where you’d have to be french to criticize Sarkozy, to be spanish to say what you think about the ‘slanted eyes’ spanish team picture or south african to feel horrified by apartheid, wouldn’t that be a sad world ?

Then of course, I feel welcome here, love the site and its writers and surely don’t wish to anger anyone, but I honestly don’t see what could hurt anyone’s feeling, it’s not like I said that we could never see this kind of behaviour with french players or that americans were stupid patriotic jerks.

It happens in the World Championship at Japan. If I remember well the US players ask for a change in the ceremony for medals so they could receive the bronze medal one day before the usual ceremony, when gold and silver are given too, and go back home one day before.

Who or what are they saluting?

I suppose, in the loosest sense of the word, they’re wearing uniforms. I thought as a civilian man you don’t salute. If you’re wearing a hat you take it off and hold it over your heart during the anthem. Civilian women put their hand over their heart whether or not they’re wearing a hat. So I ask again, who, what and why are they saluting.

They're saluting

Because, I guess, they do not know or realize any proper protocal for saluting and they know soldiers do it, so they are trying to reference/honor the soldiers by doing what they do: salute.

That’s how I interpret it, anyways.

And weren’t there American soldiers in the crowd? I remember Lebron dunking and saluting specific soldiers.

I don’t think the players put a lot of thought into it, just trying to show some love to some troops.

Unless I am misunderstanding your question, of course!

Could you enlighten me

on Nash’s courage ?

On a side note, I know a lot of american people have been offended by these gestures, like the american journalist (a former pro-player) who was commenting the USA b-ball games, so in my opinion, it was clearly a criticism of some people’s behavior rather than of americans in general which I would have never allowed myself to do…

On another note, I’m coming back on what you said about this site’s welomeness (???, sorry, I can’t find the proper word) which is totally true, I’ve come to some french sites and stopped going there pretty quickly because I highly disliked the overall tone of its writers, very in-your-face and unfriendly, as if people couldn’t disagree politely.
So yes, I find this site to be pretty unique and therefore surely wish not to offend anyone nor get banned…

That split beak Nash got looked nasty. And he just stood there, no drama or reaction. Contrast to TP, who went with the “writhe on the floor, lest someone think you actually fouled” move.

And yes, speaking out against a war by an athlete takes courage. Athlete’s careers are premised on their popularity. By speaking on ANY controvercial issue, athletes risk hurting their careers, which is why so few do. Those that speak out get my respect, regardless of whether I agree (unless the athlete’s view is based exclusively in ignorance or malice)

Rooting for USA

But not without some difficulty. It is a difficult thing to root for the likes of Kobe, Melo, Kidd, Tayshaun, etc. I can’t stand some of those guys and it feels, well, wrong to wish them success. Fortunately, most of the team (LeBron, Wade, CP3, Bosh) seem to be generally good guys.

My best case result – Rudy rips it up for 30 and dunks four times in Melo’s face, Kobe goes 0-for-11 from three and gets benched, Kidd gets kicked out of the game for hitting on a female ref, and the US wins a close one as Gasol has eighteen turnovers and Wade, CP3, and LeBron are unstoppable down the stretch.

OT, did anybody see the story on truehoop about a Redeem Teamer hitting on a married distance runner and asking for her number? What are the Vegas odds on who the unnamed player was?

Bayless isn't the second coming of Jordan.
Jordan was the first coming of Bayless.

USA!!!

Yeah, there’s a few characters I don’t root for personally, but I still want team USA to CRUSH every one of their competitors. I haven’t felt this way for a while. When they won the bronze I said, “Serves them right”. They have the most talent and fail to utilize it.

But I think the wake up call was sent, they are actually playing with determination and defense. So again I root for them.

If that means Rudy is shut down and Spain is defeated by 60, so be it. That is what I want to see. No close games.

I don’t doubt that we will be on a streak for a while with international competiton before inevitably slippling back to complacency. I will then root for anybody to give us another whooping.

But for now, CRUSH ’EM.

K*BE is the stopper

I hate to say it, but welcome to the NBA Rudy. This is going to be a very tough matchup for him. I look forward to seeing how he handles it. I think he might have success against the USA because he moves off the ball so well. Hopefully Rubio and Calderon will find him.

The USA has been steamrolling opponents, and Spain just almost lost to China. Plus the while arena will be cheering for USA.

Gavin Dawson said it best

If you want the nation to take notice of the Blazers then there would be no better way than rudy leading the Spanish national team to victory over team USA. I fully agree and if this where to happen the NBA would be absolutely freaked out about the Blazers and most teams would probably just forfit to us out of sheer fright.

"The next day in practice, if you sweat, it's going to come out of your pores, regardless. If you ask any coach around the league how many times they have smelled liquor on a player . . . As long as that player is showing up on time, doing the drills and running, that's part of it. But there have been times, yeah. Yeah, you probably smelled liquor on me. But it's not like I'm at practice drunk. I'm totally focused."

by Steve Guttenberg on Aug 15, 2008 10:18 AM PDT reply actions   1 recs

Gavin Dawson is pathetic!

I think that was a stupid comment by Gavin Dawson. How in the world will a Spanish victory of team USA do anything for the Blazers even if Rudy drops 40? He (Rudy) scored an impressive 3 points in their last victory so what does that make him now? The only way Rudy will have any impact on the Blazers is if he plays consistantly well while actually playing in the NBA and increases the win total at the end of the season.

And shame on you American people for wishing and hoping for team USA to loose just because you don’t like a certain person or how the media is covering the Olympics. Why wouldn’t they cover the US events here in the United States?? Oh, God forbid they cover these events because their freakin’ friends and family are here wanting to watch them compete for something they’ve trained nearly their entire lives for. What is wrong with you people? Seriously? Is it a crime to actually represent your homeland? If so, move the heck outside of the borders of this GREAT country! I’m proud to see athletes with origins from all over the world representing THIS country! How often do you see an athlete from any other country that looks like they may actually be from somewhere else? A German representing China, a black person representing Korea, an Asian person representing Norway, A Danish person representing Japan? Thank God the face of America represents ALL people of ALL nations of ALL color of ALL religions… But I guess it’s your choice to cheer for our defeat because the land of the free gives you the right to do so – which should give you reason enough to be patriotic towards your fellow country men/women who represent the great gift we have as Americans that are now in China in front of the largest audience ever for the Olympic games.

I'm pulling for Spain

Since it’s closer to my birth country, which probably doesn’t even have a national team (go Joel Freeland!). And I’m always one to root for the underdog, hence why I became a Blazer fanatic the season before the 21 wins. It just seems appropriate.

I think it’s hard to argue the ethical high-road here, since while many of us talk about the US team being arrogant jerks/bad sportsmen, etc, the Spanish team isn’t showing any lack of those same characteristics. I don’t have pride connected to either team, unless it was actually me doing the playing. Nationalism is kind of lame you guys!

We got beefy dudes

While they got taller players, none of them are as beefy as Lebron, Melo, Boozer, etc. They won’t necessarily be able to post up and be effective, as we got so many tall/buff/athletic wings who can easily compensate.

That’s why I liked the ‘no real centers besides Howard’ approach; the international game’s big men shoot 3’s, play at the high post, move without the ball, all stuff we traditionally think of as wing-player stuffs. Since all of our guys are stronger than the skinny jump shooter Euros all of the European countries have, we can give up the size and make it up with athleticism and length.

Spain needs to take advantage of the momentary lazy interior defense of the Americans if they wanna win. Cutting quickly, slipping screens, all that stuff that hits ya before the USAians can react. The perimeter defenders will be ball hawking and making things tough for the ballhandlers, but the interior guys are often just watching the ball and waiting for it to be poked away. Their man can lose his defender easily and take advantage.

Won’t likely be enough to win of course, but if for some reason the American offense is way off and Spain can handle the defensive pressure, then it could be enough to make the difference.

I don’t think their height will be a true advantage, though.
