Perspective

Star-divide

I, like the rest of you, was casually browsing BEdge last night when I came across the news of Roy and instantly thought the worst. I dont know about you, but it is almost as if I have been holding my breath this whole offseason just hoping we can start the season as a HEALTHY team. Just a glimpse of Oden, Roy, and Aldridge was all I wanted. And then BAM, a sledgehammer to my knee if you will. I bring this up because earlier in the day I had found out that an acquaintance (not friend) of mine had killed himself. I was naturally blown away by the news, but soon recovered and went back to life as normal. Yet before bed time I found myself more angered and bewildered by the news of Roy and his knee. In fact, that was the only thing on my mind when I remembered the news about my acquaintance from earlier, and I suddenly calmed down and put it all in perspective. I love Roy, trust me, but the dude is fine, maybe not his knee, but he is alive, rich, and doing well. And here I am thinking about how unfortunate and unfair life is. I write this because I am sure the rest of you were pretty upset to say the least. While news following the surgery is intially good, I am still holding my breath. Regardless of how it turns out, I hope that we can all put in perspective what really matters in life. When I am thinking more about Roy and his knee than a person who just took his own life because life was too much to bare, something is wrong. I just hope everyone can take a step back, look at what matters, and then be thankful because life can sure be a WHOLE lot more difficult than an unfortunate incident involving your favorite team. Now of course I hope he has a speedy recovery and is ready to take the league by storm, but please Blazer faithful, lets get a little perspective. P.S. We have Rudy and Bayless in case you haven't heard.

Fantasy vs. Reality

The suicide is a very real thing that leads to hurt feelings among family and friends of the victim. Roy’s knee is a very real thing that leads to concern about the season.
At the end of the day, you’ll likely never be Roy’s buddy or meet his family. Your relationship with him is mostly fantasy.
This suicide’s family and friends are much closer in reality, but far from a part of your fantasy life like Roy, I would guess.
It’s tough to deal with. I felt like I’d been kicked in the gut when I read about the knee. Then my co-workers started bugging me and I thought, wouldn’t it be nice if they just fell off the 8th floor here and I didn’t have to deal with them. If they really did drop dead, I’m sure I would feel terrible — even if they are not my favorite people. They are an annoyance in my reality and fantasy.
Where I am I going with this? I dunno. Whenever a friend kills himself (which thankfully has only happened a couple of times for me), I always think of that person’s last trembling moments. To be honest, I never thought about how Roy felt about his knee. I really don’t care if he has hurt feelings or even his physical pain, at least not all that much. I mean, I certainly hope he feels great, but it’s a professional injury, not the end of a troubled life. I was concerned about his career and how it played out with the Blazers season(s). This was a very real fantasy!
Life is tough. We gotta help each other out now and again.
Hope you are OK.

I like first person perspective.

One is also inclined, from time to time, to use third person perspective.

I find that you often use 2nd person as well . . . .

ok, sorry for the lame joke. I’ll only speak for myself here, but I assume that I echo the thoughts of some others, when I say I feel a little sheepish about the way I behaved last night. Complete over-reaction. I mean, if he needs surgery, then he needs surgery. It’s not like it would be any better for the team or the fans or himself if he just never had surgery despite needing it, right? It’s such a challenge for me (a good portion of the time, but I’m working on it) to just accept something that happens (espcially something I don’t “want” to happen), in the moment it happens, and understand that it just IS. It’s not right or wrong, it’s not good or bad. It just is, and respond from there. I get so caught up in the drama and the “Oh my God, I can’t believe it. I’ll never get what I want. It was just too good to be true” kind of thinking. I spend so much time making plans, and expecting things to play out a certain way. When they don’t? Oh my gosh am I pissed . . . I just noticed somebody beat me to a second-person comment. Time to post this rambling piece of crap.

that doesn't look right. it looks like i'm pissed about somebody beating me to a comment.

The oh my gosh am I pissed part was related to my original rambling. That worked out funny.

ill have to be careful in fleecing you for content

interesting perspective above, huh. whats funny is that I dont want to think about reality, I want to think about fantasy, fantasy is an escape from reality. if i didnt have a decent capacity for fantasy, my last meal would taste like metal it think.

did you not read Dave's fan post 3 posts down?

you know the one where he reminded everyone to keep talk of Roy’s Knee injury to the main page post, instead of bumbing more Fanposts off the front page.
