Count the MINUTES!
48 minutes in a basketball game x 5 players = 240 minutes of game time for our roster next season assuming of course the games end in regulation. Based on our return players' numbers from last year and the predicted amount of necessary minutes for our stellar rooks, let's break down the minutes and see who's going to get shafted nest season. For the sake of simple accounting, I'll be rounding all predicted minutes.
First, let's start with the big three:
Brandon Roy - 37 MINUTES (assuming all goes well tomorrow morning!)- Last year Mr. (future) Wheaties Box averaged 37.7 minutes per game. With the arrival of Bayless and Rudy you may reasonably expect to see a slight dip in minutes so he can rest while those young guns run it. It's tough to know how necessary it will be to have him play major minutes for the simple purpose of steadying the ship. My prediction is that he'll see a similar amount of court time this year and less next year when Bayless and Rudy have a more polished role with one year of experience under their belt.
Greg Oden - 28 MINUTES - I would rather see Oden play either 48 minutes or 15. I want him to want to play as much as possible immediately to dispel any notion that he's not healthy or injury prone. I want to see him dunk on many faces and have just as many posters hanging in my living room. However I also want him to be playing with us when it really matters- like the NBA finals for the next 15 years. Better to play it safe and keep him under 30 minutes, especially since Pryzbilla really is as formidable a backup center as there is in the league.
LaMarcus Aldridge - 35 MINUTES - Last season TheMancus averaged 34.9 minutes and I don't expect that to change much. I'd like to see him out there as much as possible, but just as with Oden there's really no need to burn him out unnecessarily. If Channing Frye can play remotely close to how he was balling at the end of last season, then he deserves at least 20 minutes himself. Not sure if Ike Diogu is worthy of minutes yet, but if so then that should cut into LMA's time as well. Unlike last year however, it appears the Blazers want Travis to stay at the 3, so that's a few more minutes at the 4 possibly for Ike (if we're winning by a good margin).
So...37 + 28 + 35 = 100 MINUTES for our Big 3 alone, which leaves 140 minutes left for the likes of Rudy, Martell, Travis, Channing, Bayless, Blake, Pryzbilla, Sergio, Batum, Diogu, and LaFrentz. I like our whole team and wish everyone could get in, but for the sake of staying under the 240 minute threshold, NO MINUTES of mine will be awarded to RLEC, Ike, or Batum. With that said, here's the breakdown of minutes for the rest:
Travis Outlaw - 24 MINUTES - Not sure if Travis or Martell will see more minutes, but last year Travis got 26.6 while Marty got 28.4. With Rudy demanding minutes in a possible 3-guard rotation and Travis moving solely to the 3, one would expect both Travis and Martell to lose at least a lil' playing time. My solution is to split the 48 SF minutes equally between Travis and Martell, since by position at least there's really no one else deserving of those minutes although undoubtedly Batum will garner a few here and there.
Martell Webster - 24 MINUTES - See above. I love Webster and he deserves a bump up to 30 a game since he's our only 3 point specialist (now that JJ is gone) and can arguably defend the perimeter better than Outlaw at this point. But there's just not enough minutes to let him see many in the 2nd half. I think he'll start, but Outlaw will get all the minutes in the 2nd and 4th quarters. Hopefully Marty can get a couple more 26-pt 3rd quarters next season since that'll be his only opportunity to do so.
Rudy Fernandez - 20 MINUTES - I pessimistically foresee Rudy getting shafted on minutes this season. Hopefully he plays well enough to get all of Jack's minutes (over 20) from last season, but it'll be tough with our line-up. Some promises were made in order to get him to come here and it'd be nice to see him happy, but as long as Rudy's entire extended family have access to a SPAM credit card, he just might have to live with it. I suspect he may end up more in the 14-18 minute range, but I hope he's good enough that Nate can't help but give him at least 20.
Channing Frye - 20 MINUTES - It appears Frye could be poised to have a breakout or bust type of season. His work ethic, attitude and general abilities cannot be questioned. He's been putting in hard work in the weight room and everyone appears to love the guy. He's developing a 3 point shot too apparently. All this would indicate that he's deserving of 24 minutes a game as well, but that just doesn't seem realistic. Last season he got 17.2 minutes of action and I think he'll see a little more since Travis will supposedly no longer be playing the 4 and he may see some action at Center if we want to play really up-tempo. Frye's challenge will be to remain effective and hustle with the limited minutes he gets. As a jump-shooter, it's easier to hit shots when you're warm and have been running around for awhile--a luxury Frye won't really have playing behind TheMancus. Furthermore, this is a contract year for Frye, so if we want to keep him for awhile it might actually be in our favor to keep his stats down and hide his true value so he doesn't receive any uber-offers from other clubs and we can keep him on the cheap. Signing him to a multi-year contract like Outlaw's (4M per season) would be a great value, and he'd probably take it if he indeed loves it here as much as he says he does.
Joel Pryzbilla - 16 MINUTES - As the only true Center on our squad last year, Joel still only played half the game. His 23.6 minutes from last season are sure to go down with the arrival of the Great One. If my prediction comes true and Oden sees 28 minutes of play, that leaves 20 available at the Center position. It'd be nice to have the overwhelming presence of one of our bigs on the court at all times, however foul problems and certain game scenarios will dictate a smaller line-up with Frye at the 5. Thus the 16 minutes.
So...at this juncture we have 100 (big 3) + 24 + 24+ 20 + 20 + 16 = 204 MINUTES. By that count, there's only 36 minutes left and we've yet to discuss the PG position. I'm okay with allotting less than a full game's worth of minutes to the PG position because I have a desire to see Brandon and Rudy play the 1-2 for about 12 minutes a game. That way Rudy can get the bulk of his minutes developing alongside Brandon instead of as his brief replacement.
Steve Blake - 16 MINUTES - Blake will likely start the season and will probably play the point when Oden is in the game, that way we can run our slow show with Blake, Roy, Webster, Aldridge and Oden. My initial instinct was to give Blake more minutes than Bayless, but Blake will have Jerryd biting his ankles all season long. Sergio could also be deserving of more minutes if he and Rudy click together. I don't see Blake as the type to have a problem with limited minutes, but 16 per game is a far cry from his 29.9 last season.
Jerryd Bayless - 16 MINUTES - The summer league MVP will be a great player and could take over the starting role by season's end. He can score, this much we know. If he can pass and lead an effective fast break, his value will soar sky-high. I see him playing a lot of minutes with the 2nd unit alongside Rudy, Travis, Frye, and Joel. That may be too many scorers for one unit, but I'd love to see those guys get up and down with Joel as the anchor. Bayless could also steal minutes from Rudy if he ends up looking like the better prospect of the two.
Sergio Rodriguez - 4 MINUTES - I know the shooting coach paid him a personal visit. I know his friend and fellow countryman's arrival should make him more comfortable. Nonetheless, Sergio will have a tough time seeing action next season. If we had kept Rush and not traded for Bayless, Jack would've gone via some other facet and Sergio may have been able to step in as the primary back-up to Blake. The bright side is, should any of our guards get injured (knock on wood, but with two rookie guards like Rudy and Bayless, you wouldn't expect either to play all 82 games), Sergio will be a very serviceable replacement. If he can run the pick and roll half as well with Oden as he did with Jamal Magloire he should be good for at least 5 assists for every 5 minutes of action. The only hope for Sergio is if Bayless keeps his head down and sucks at running the break, because we know Sergio is a high energy guy that at least can get up and down the court and find open players. As it stands, Sergio's limited 8.8 minutes from last season appear poised to be cut in half.
THAT'S IT! 240! If only there were 5 fifths to a game instead of 4 quarters!
It was really tough to diplomatically dispense these minutes as a fan, so imagine how hard Nate's job is going to be next year. Rudy and Bayless will be rooks, but both are extremely competitive and will likely be unhappy with less than 20 minutes each. Travis and Martell will want more minutes than those rooks simply because they've been here longer and are very talented/promising players in their own right. Sergio, Joel, and Blake will be the most shafted in minutes compared to what they played last season. Martell and Travis are developing players that would like to have more minutes than last season, but they will likely see a dip in minutes as well.
Luckily, the team we have now is not the team we had 5 years ago. That team would have had a mutiny if minutes were slashed. This Blazers group now is young, cool, and poised...at least we hope so. Winning will be the best remedy for lack of playing time. The Big 3's going to get theirs and that's what matters most, but we're going to need the best out of our role players this year. My guess is whoever does the best with the limited minutes they get will be the ones that are still here in a couple years. As presently constructed, it's tough to imagine this team growing together while continually sacrificing minutes for each other. But we'll save that speculation for another post.
So...do my esteemed colleagues here on BEdge agree with this assessment? Who do you think deserves more or less minutes than I predicted? Hopefully every game we play this year goes into triple-overtime so that everyone can have their time to shine.

I'm sure this is a very well thought out post and it looks like you put a lot of work into it
and um, maybe you’ve been too busy typing to realize this but…BRANDON FREAKING ROY IS UNDERGOING KNEE SURGERY. Its kind of hard to think about anything else at this point. I’m sorry, I’ll try to process more of this tomorrow but for now I’m too busy rocking in the fetal position.
Asked whether he noticed Oden favoring his right knee, Frye dismissed it entirely.
"He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors," Frye said after giving up his share to Oden in the workout.

indeed
the brandon news came out as I was finishing my post. It’s been edited slightly now that this news has come out. But don’t expect me to stop being a fan (and therefore fanatical) because of a knee surgery. It didn’t stop any of us last season. I’m praying for Brandon but for now it’s out of our hands. We can’t do anything about it until tomorrow morning so let’s try and keep our minds off it until then. Wait to worry.

Yes there are only so many minutes in a game, but do me a favor. Go look at the avg minutes played from all our players last year and add them up. hint they don’t add up to what you think.
by usmcr3049 on Aug 14, 2008 8:13 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
uhh...
actually they do. When I rounded all the minutes from last season’s players (including Jack, Wafer, and McRoberts who are not displayed on our current roster) it was about 240. I know those solar powered calculators don’t work so well in portland at times but check this:
2007-08 MPG Blazers Roster (rounded to nearest 1 minute)
Aldridge – 35
Blake – 30
Frye – 17
LaFrentz – 8 (!)
Outlaw – 27
Pryzbilla – 24
Rodriguez – 9
Roy – 38
McRoberts – 4
Jack – 27
Wafer/Green (avg) – 5
Webster – 28
252? i rounded up more often than not + overtime
HINT, add these up on a sunny day.
252, pretty close to the 240 available minutes in a game. AND, the reason it’s slightly over 240 is because I rounded up 8 times and rounded down only 4. That’s because 8 of our players played over X.5 minutes per game. Consequently only 4 of our players played at X.4 mpg or under. Also, the Blazers season last year consisted of 7 games that reached overtime. That’s 5 more minutes for each of those games, or 35 extra minutes last season. That’s almost half an extra minute per game on average. So there really are basically 240 minutes available next season, sorry to have to prove it the long way but I was hinted into doing so.

Another thing
The minutes per game is deceptive because you assume the player is in every game. That doesn’t happen however. If Brandon didn’t play, someone else got his minutes and their average goes up. Brandon’s doesn’t go down. Since he didn’t play, the game isn’t factored into averaging his minutes.
For example, if you have 2 five-player units, and one unit plays all 48 minutes of 41 games, they would average 240 minutes per game as a unit. Have the second unit do the same thing for the other 41 games, and they too would average 240 minutes per game. Total them up and you get 480 minutes for the team in 82 games.
Ah. I love math.

wow a lot a people gave you a bunch of undesrved grief for this.
i was basically agree except for two things.
1. Roy won’t have to play 37 minutes a game this season, my guess it closer to 35. That free up two more minutes, i would probably have say those will go to Rudy
2. I doubt that Sergio will play much this season except for in blowouts. So i would take his 4 minutes and split them fifty-fifty between Blake and Bayless.

60 Minute games.
I actually think the first and last are pretty good renditions of the way it will be. Of course, don’t listen to KP, Mac or Brandon when you do these things. KP at one point had to back off a little on his enthusiasm for Fernandez with the comment " he didn’t want to put pressure on him to start right away". Mac said yesterday that he thought Fernandez had a high ceiling and could be a really fine player. KP and Brandon said they thought Bayless would be a perfect complement to Brandon, and then KP said Bayless would only need 42 games to figure it all out. Whatever that means.
So, it 42 games, I vote for 60 minute games just so everyone can play enough minutes.

Keep Roy on limited minutes throughout the year...
Everybody knows what kind of baller we have in Brandon Roy, right? Well in light of this recent scope on his knee cartilage, and this being our gleeming young star Greg Oden’s first year in the league. We have Sergio and Bayless and Rodriguez and Webster who need to prove to Nate and KP which ones they should keep beyond this year, and vice versa, which is going to be the next that goes the way of Jarrett Jack… trade bait for a rookie. Brandon Roy is the MVP right now in the Blazers locker room, but if I were in charge of minutes for this first half of the year I would play B.Roy every minute with Greg Oden in the game and then pull B.Roy out when Oden needs to sit or has foul trouble. That would mean playing Brandon Roy only 28 minutes a night during the first half of the season (guessing that the Great One will be able to stay healthy and productive for 28 per game). This would allow our two focal points to work together every minute they can while limiting the pounding on Roy to keep him fresh for the first playoff push and giving the Young Guns their shots to prove who is legit and staying… a game of survivor if you will.
Aldridge 34
Roy 28
Oden 28
Outlaw 26
Webster 26
Rudy 22
Frye 22
Bayless 18
Pryz 16
Blake 16
Diogu 6
and that is 242 folks…
What do you think about Roy’s durability and how his body will hold up this year, and in the future?
by Portland Dynasty on Aug 14, 2008 2:36 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Bingo
I couldn’t agree more. This should be a playoff year, but still keep looking at the big picture – going easy on Roy’s body allows the rest of the team to develop and sift out, while limiting the wear and tear on a key cog in our machine. Wait for the playoffs to put him in at 35 minutes a game. And especially don’t burn him out in the first months of the season when the schedule is most challenging and the effects of a potential injury are most devastating for the rest of the season.
The rest of the minutes seems weighted towards the bigs right now, and Im sorry to see no Sergio. You only have 34 minutes at the point between Bayless and Blake. I’d give more to Sergio at the expense of Diogu and Webster…

You're Funny
You make a point that Rudy won’t get 20 minutes and then you give him 18. I don’t disagree with you I just don’t think two minutes difference is that huge of a difference.
I do disagree on your Bayless minutes. He’s not even old enough to drive. Nate’s not going to give a lot of minutes to the little kid when he has Blake (who is building a relationship with Oden), Sergio, Roy, and Fernandez in front of him. I think he’ll be a starter some day but not this year.

Going from 4 quarters to 5 fifths
leads to a big AA problem and no additional minutes (9.6 minute 5ths). Think about a player calling home as saying I only went through a fifth tonight! So what you really meant (I assume) is 60 minute games which would get everyone home at 12:30 am and bleary eyed as well as horse the next morning but perhaps not hungover because the stop at the bar afterward would get cut out.
Nice effort. I hope Brandon plays around 33 minutes each game to keep him fresh for April, May and June.

Respectfully,
With so many rookies on the team we can reasonably expect Steve and Martell to gobble up the minutes. They are vets, they have NBA legs and wind, they know the system, and in case it still isn’t obvious to everyone, they are superior to the rookies in almost every way except how the fans feel about them. Dave has spelled out on several occassions the contract issues that will alter this picture. Till that happens we’ll be seeing lots of Blake, Webster and Outlaw.

The most troublesome contract issues
of which you speak belong to Channing Frye and Martell Webster only. Jack’s was going to be a problem too but we solved that one. So I really don’t know how Blake got mixed in. His contract won’t be a problem for us until two years from now when we have to compete with other teams for his services. My guess is he would want to stay but will get more lucrative offers elsewhere (like Djibouti) that he can’t pass up.
Two years from now Jerryd will have solidified his role as starter and Blake will be expendable. Whether or not Steve Blake is superior to Bayless in almost every way is yet to be seen since their entirely different types of PGs. I know “rookies” don’t traditionally play a lot of minutes of already good teams, but what the Blazers are facing is a once-inna-lifetime experience. That is, our rookies are good enough to command minutes—all 3 of ‘em. Furthermore, we’ll see either Martell or Travis in the game, but usually in place of one another as management has stated Travis is going to solely play Marty’s position—the 3. Hence the 24 min each predicted for each next season. Blake’s playing time will plummet by the end of the season as Bayless takes a linear path to the starting role.

Diogu is in the same category
as Frye and Webster, re: the restricted/expiring contracts

No Reason
Why Roy should have to play 37 mins. a game 30/32 mins. a game should be fine. With Bayless,Rudy, and Outlaw comming off the bench along with Frye and przybilla there is not a need to overplay anybody. You don’t want them the (players) to be wore out come playoff time. and if Bayless takes the starting job at mid season. That will mean Blake will be comming off the bench with Rudy,Outlaw, frye and przy which means the second unit won’t be tapering off a whole lot. I like Frye and przybilla comming off the bench as the second unit twin towers how many teams in the league have twin towers comming off the bench, and with Blake getting Rudy and Outlaw the ball that will be a one two scoring punch.

Blake's are too low
Where is the love for Blake? I know nobody thinks he is the future but will Nate really play Rudy and Bayless more than Blake this year?
As excited as I am about both of them, I see Blake keeping his hold on at least 25 minutes a game. Rudy and Bayless will be in the 20 a game range (one of them a little over, one a little under), eating up minutes vacated by the JJs, while they learn the game. Maybe by the end of the season, maybe, we will see one of them unseating Blake. They will have to earn their minutes and Blake, especially with Nate as coach, isn’t going to give them up easily.

Roy to play less mins?
I don’t get that. I mean, we take our best chance of winning, and sit him so Rookies can fill that time with bad turnovers and inconsistant shooting. Glad your not in charge!!!
I never really cared

Your right
Roy should play 40+ mins a year and shorten his life span because our bench is so thin
