Mo Money, Mo Problems, (insert Mo pun here)
Cleveland is now Mo-town, do they still need Mo help? Will I lose all self respect as I make horrible pun after horrible pun? Should this be a poll?
Cleveland, Milwaukee and Oklahoma City have agreed in principle to a six-player trade that could add a much-needed second scorer to LeBron James' Cavaliers.
Mo Williams, the high-scoring point guard from Milwaukee, will go to Cleveland in the deal, which should be announced later Wednesday. The 6-foot-1 Williams averaged 17.2 points and a team-high 6.3 assists for the Bucks last season. Cleveland will send shooting guard Damon Jones to Milwaukee and forward Joe Smith to Oklahoma City. Milwaukee also will get point guard Luke Ridnour and forward Adrian Griffin from Oklahoma City. Oklahoma City, formerly known as the Seattle SuperSonics, also gets Desmond Mason, the athletic small forward, from the Bucks.

No Boobie reference?
Come on… If you ever get a chance to say Boobie on BlazersEdge, you’ve gotta take that opportunity!
Basically, this means that Daniel “Boobie” Gipson will forever and always be a backup point guard, which is interesting – seeing as how he won the three-point shooting contest this year.

It's fitting, because he is from Oklahoma
Some high-flying fan fodder, and they get an expiring contract. Good deal for OKC, good deal for the Cavs (who otherwise would have had to pay Delonte West too much), and also for the Bucks a good deal good way to correct paying too much Mo-ney.

I'm sure you do, but I'll ask anyway. Do you play Fantasy Basketball?
How high do you take Westbrook? I mean, two or three great to elite PG’s and you’re almost impossible to beat. Is worth drafting him in the third round? fourth round? I love me some point guards in Fantasy Basketball. How about Mayo? Is he even worth a third round pick? Durant burned a lot of people last year. So did Oden, for those leagues that drafted early. And speaking of the big fella, how high to do you take him? We should start a Fantasy Basketball thread or something.

I don't, unless you count NBA Live / 2k, and that mostly on my own against the Xbox. My trades would never fly in fantasy leagues ;-)
I would guess Mayo has more fantasy value than Westbrook, since he benefits from the trade to Memphis where he can be both starting SG or backup PG. The team plays quite fast, which should give him nice stats. Even Bayless might have better production, although he probably gets a lot less playing time. Westbrooks forte is defense, and that doesn’t get you much in fantasy basketball the last time I checked.
From this year’s draft picks, I probably would take Beasley very early if available. That guy might not be the best player in the draft or win them anything, but on this Miami team he will have no problem stuffing his stats, much more than e.g. Rose. And just a guess, but I think my sleeper pick from the 2008 draft would be Donte Greene. He could be like mini-Durant on that Kings team. Or a bust ;-)
I would also look which player’s production might go down due to this year’s draft picks, e.g. Hinrich in Chicago or Felton in Charlotte.

We should do a BE fantasy league!
I’m not kidding at all. I’d be happy to set it up. ESPN.com or NBA.com? I bet there will be as much, or more, interest in Fantasy Bball as the Court Rivals thing.
I wouldn’t take Westbrook at all in a 10 team league. I’d wait and see how he plays and maybe pick him up as a FA later on.
Beasley and Mayo could be good high risk/reward players at or after the 6th round, maybe higher if you really like gambling. Same thing for Oden.

Fantasy Basketball?
I look to take Oden in the 3rd round and don’t touch Westbrook till 7th or 8th in a 10 round draft. He’s going to be a back up in OKC and will get close to 20-25 minutes. That’s going to be tough to produce enough stats to be a 3rd or 4th draft pick. That would mean that he’s your second best PG on your team? Not likely.
Good luck.

Nice move for the Robber Barons
Desmond Mason is an adequate 3, and his contract expires. Luke sucks and they need to develop Westbrook, anyways. Another great trade by Presti, now let’s see if his draft talent amounts to anything.
I’m really iffy about the Westbrook pick, at least that high. In most cases, I feel like a player who skyrockets up draft boards off of his tournament performance and combine results usually end up being over-hyped. All of a sudden, GMs start forgetting basics and start drinking the kool-aid. “Sure this Westbrook kid played nothing but shooting guard most of his career, averaged 12ppg, hasn’t got a real jumpshot, didn’t show any real play-making ability or NBA caliber ball handling skills, but wow, if he ever learned all those things he might be a hall of famer! Just look at that vertical leap, quickness, wing span and defensive ability.” Not so say that Westbrook won’t be solid, but when you pick 4th you want a franchise cornerstone. Westbrook looks like Devin Harris at best, and Antonio Daniels at worst. That was OT but whatever. Oh and I vote Serge Ikana(sp) as first 2008 bust.
As for the Bucks, it looks like they got screwed. Desmond Mason is pretty decent, Mo Williams is pretty good for a small shooting guard but seriously, all they could get is Luke Ridinour? At least get a draft pick out of somebody. I know they needed to thin their roster, but this is like a free giveaway. How much salary are they saving? Are the Bucks thinking Raymond Sessions is their future? And no offense to them, Joe Alexander has the feel of a bust to me. At 13 I can see it, but at 6? Eh. Personally, I would rather given away Michael Redd for an EC.
Mo Williams, Larry Hughes II? I feel like he is going to suck, and suck hard in Cleveland. But, you never know. Delonte and Boobie are actually pretty decent. Are they going to move them now? God without Lebron they would be the worst team in the NBA, BY FAR. The move doesn’t make too much sense to me. Why not sit on that Joe Smith EC egg for a little while longer, see what you can get at the trade deadline? I bet the Mavs would settle for Jason Smith and a few throws-in right now right?

Trying to answer a little bit with what I think about the deal (sorry if I rehash something)
OKC: Don’t think they want to let Mason expire (but of course they could). He comes from Oklahoma (or at least has played there in college), like not many players in the NBA, and can provide some highlight dunks. He could become a local favorite. Plus, they get an expiring contract in Joe Smith, who a) isn’t a bad player and b) could be either traded again for draft pick(s) near the deadline a la Thomas last year or c) really expire and bring them further under the cap next year. And finally, they manage to move Ridnour, solve their PG conundrum and free up playing time for Westbrook. I really like that deal for them, Presti is solid. Oh, and Serge Ibaka won’t even play in the NBA next year (three year deal in Europe), does that qualify as bust already?
Cavs: They get a solid young player who can score (definitely not a pure PG), but is badly overpaid thanks to the crazy contract the Bucks gave him (five years and $44 million). On the other hand, they did something to appease their fan base and James, and can now let Delonte West walk (or at least threaten him to do so), who is a free agent and wanted the same money Boobie Gibson got. And they gave up two players they don’t really need. Smith played solid in the playoffs, but they should be able to pick up a decent PF somewhere along the road to the playoffs.
Bucks: A little harder to understand why they did the deal. They definitely didn’t upgrade their roster by giving up Mason and Williams for Ridnour, Griffin and Jones. Probably they realized that they overpaid for Mo Williams, and last year he played lackluster defense for them. Maybe Sessions really is their best answer on PG, and they don’t need another scorer besides Redd. But they won’t save money for the next two years, and until then they just got worse. I also wonder what Richard Jefferson thinks of the deal. First they upgrade a position seemingly to make a push for the playoffs, then they downgrade the point guard position (they now have four, and neither of them proven great) and make Alexander their best backup for him. Strange.
Odenied: Asked whether he noticed Oden favoring his right knee, Frye dismissed it entirely. "He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors."

All about the $$$
OKC did the trade for the expiring contracts completely, they dont have many minutes for Mason behind the budding stars in Durant and Green. They need to cap flexibility this summer to pick up a decent big or two to add to their 3 young guns (westbrook and the 2 previously mentioned). I like the looks of this for OKC.
ps I wish they were still here…

The bit about Ibaka was a joke
That’s why I wrote Sp and stuff, like I knew nothing about him but classified him as a bust.
Yeah I’m trying to figure out what the Bucks are doing. It might be addition by subtraction, but they are still a weak defensive team, now they just lost 2 of their offensive options. Richard Jefferson is a good complimentary player, Redd is a good complimentary player, I don’t see anyone that is going to step in and take them to the playoffs. Unless that isn’t their goal.

I hate to do this
but I’d feel icky if I didn’t. While O.J. Mayo was my top choice for Portland to get in the draft (I knew it was virtually impossible), I did a lot of talking in defense of Russell Westbrook around here leading up to the draft. Why? It seemed like there was a blog-wide smear campaign going on against him. Obviously that’s an exaggeration, but there was some funny stuff said about him. Unless he really is the second coming of and/or is “just like” Jarrett Jack, Rudy Fernandez, Tyrus Thomas, Aaron McKie, Corey Brewer, Fred Jones, Leandro Barbosa, Monta Ellis, Rajon Rondo, or anybody else he was inexplicably compared to here. It just doesn’t go with what I saw when I watched UCLA play, which was a lot since I was living in California. Yes, plenty of people talked positively of him, but I hate the term “drank the kool-aid” or “drank the hype” or any other implication that somebody drank something that somehow affected their judgment someway and I heard a LOT of that “drink” talk when discussing Westbrook and it irked me beyond belief. So, here I go. My last stand for why Russell Westbrook might not suck as much as people want him to.
12.7/4.3/3.9. No, those numbers do not jump off the page. Do 14.9/4.7/4.5? Better yes, but still not “spectacular.” Those were Derrick Rose’s numbers. They’re better, he was drafted higher. No, he wasn’t known as a terrific jump shooter in college. His FGA/FGM were 10/4.7 and his FG% was 46.5. Derrick Rose’s were 10.9/5.2 and 47.7. His 3pt.A/M were 2.0/0.7 for 33.8%. Derrick Rose’s were 2.6/0.9 for 33.7. Westbrook was said (on one of the overviews on nbadraft.net) to have nice form and lift on his shooting form, which should result in him becoming a better shooter with time and practice. John Calipari said the exact same thing about Derrick Rose’s shot. Also, Westbrook showed a more consistent, improved jumper in his workouts which carried over to Summer League. From day two of Summer League (draftexpress.com): “Russell Westbrook again had a very eye opening performance, only reiterating everything we said about him yesterday while looking even more comfortable trying new things. He drilled a 3-pointer when his defender went underneath a screen, had a ridiculous offensive rebound putback dunk, posted up before drilling a turnaround jumper, and was always in attack mode looking for spots to blow by his man (especially in transition) and/or pull-up off the dribble—making 8 of 10 shots in just 24 minutes. Westbrook looked for his teammates as well and did a good job finding them unselfishly. Defensively he was outstanding as usual…there are very few people you’ll find in this gym that aren’t almost completely in love with his skill-set at this point. Most of the European executives who did not follow college basketball very closely keep wondering how in the world Derrick Rose was drafted ahead of Westbrook solely based off what they are seeing here.” I’m definitely not saying Russell Westbrook = Derrick Rose and I’m not even a big stats guy, but it is interesting to compare the two. No, Russell Westbrook did not prove himself to be a great ballhandler in college, but he did average slightly more assists than Darren Collison and showed good court vision. No, Russell Westbrook was not his team’s “starting PG”, but so what? He stood out on a team full of talent. And let’s not forget that defense. It’s not good, it’s great. Mix in his “freakish athleticism” and reputation as extremely hardworking and coachable to all that and I don’t think he’s all that sucky. Worthy of a fourth pick? Maybe, maybe not. I don’t know. Was it a horrible pick? I don’t know, but I do wonder how a Bayless/Durant offensive duo would have worked if Bayless hadn’t fallen in the draft. I’m not even saying he’ll be good. I’m just saying I don’t think he’s THAT bad, and that simple athleticism isn’t all he has to offer.

I didn't say he was bad either
I said he’ll fall somewhere between Devin Harris and Antonio Daniels. THAT’S NOT BAD. That’s pretty solid. It’s just not an all-star. Secondly, I wouldn’t put too much stock in combine/workout results. I just feel like he’s bit of a project and he’s not going to be the best player they could have picked at that position. Especially since their team is so bad at this point. Trade some EC’s/20th pick for Beasley/Mayo, if not go for Bayless. Next year Rubio is a probable draft pick, and OKC will be in the running.

I wasn't saying you were saying he was bad
I was saying his jumper/court vision/all-around game is better than most people give him credit for and giving some statistics comparing and contrasting to Derrick Rose. Everybody seems to just say “He’s athletic. Big deal.” My point was that there’s more to his game. Also, I wouldn’t guarantee that anybody available to them at the fourth pick is going to be an All-Star. Including Jerryd Bayless. They needed a center or a point guard, I guess they didn’t want Brook Lopez and so they took a player they think can play point guard. I just don’t think it was that crazy of a pick. Also, I didn’t intend for the part about his workout results to be a main point. His field goal attempts/field goals made and shooting percentages, and the fact that he averaged slightly more assists than his team’s starting point guard on a team in a tough conference with several future NBA players were more what I was pointing to. If we’re not going to take college statistics, workouts, write-ups and Summer League into consideration, all anybody has to go on are gut feelings.

Westbrook and Rose are much more similar as prospects than most people think. For some reason Rose got all the pure PG hype even though he played in a DDR offense, and all the credit for Memphis’ success, while Westbrook is the project. I think Westbrook is, in fact, more NBA ready to play point.
Bayless isn't the second coming of Jordan.
Jordan was the first coming of Bayless.

Now that he appears to be on the hotseat, we can trade our valuables for the final piece of the puzzle: Delonte West!
