Greg Oden Likes to Party

Sean Meagher at OregonLive has some great pics of Greg Oden's open workout today.  I didn't have my glasses on, but I think one of them was of Oden on a porch step hugging Steven Hill.

Check it out here.

Also check this out.  (Video)

And yet more stills.

Props to KATU

for beating OLive and Blazers.com to the punch on the video.

There should be more coming soon from OL and hopefully more from Blazers.com as well.

A few more pictures

Here. You can click on any of those images for a larger picture. This is one of my personal favs. Here’s a classic mismatch.

by Lance Uppercut on Aug 12, 2008 6:22 PM PDT reply actions

That mismatch is amazing

Man, Channing is a 6’11 240 lb power forward, and looks like a small small forward against Greg.

That Channing picture is great

Remember, the last ten games of the season, Channing was one of the top rebounders in the league. He looks like just a kid in that picture, and in the KATU video, next to Greg.

Prediction: Channing’s agent will be instructed to agree an extension with the Blazers for peanuts, just so Channing never ends up having to defend Greg in the low post.

I loved the big oop dunk

Rudy will be throwing those up every other play, if the Olympic games are any indication!

And if it’s Oden/LMA grabbing those passes instead of the Gasol Twins, it might work a lil’ better.

Oden sure is sweaty. He’s got two layers on at least, and maybe a skin-tight spandexy type thing as well. That’s good he’s working so hard because I dunno ‘bout you guys but I want him to get in good shape.

Patrick Ewing would sweat so much he’d have to change his entire jersey at halftime because it was soaked and gross. That’s the only thing I want Oden to have in common with Ewing, unless we’re winning and he’s exactly like Ewing. Right?

What?

Great links

Thanks to Sean and Casey too. (Be sure you scroll down in Center Court to get the Rudy pics. They are pretty spectacular too.)

Bet Greg is glad to be out there at last. Just a couple more weeks till 5 on 5.

Steven Hill looks more civilized, but Steve Blake looks pretty scruffy. Wonder if his wife is visiting back home…

Great videos

Three thoughts on those:
1. Those who got tired of the high pick and roll last year, you need to recognize that Nate was installing and developing a key part of this year’s offense. The pick and roll with Greg picking and rolling is devastating.
2. Channing is knocking down some long jumpers.
3. There was one play I really, really liked. Greg gets the ball on the block, and dishes out a clean, sharp pass to Channing on the other side of the court for a wide open long jumper (3?). If he’s making that pass, expect to see Martell, Steve, Jerryd, and Rudy moving without the ball and getting wide open looks. If he makes that kind of pass consistently, expect to see a lot of our offense run through Greg.

Nice

He still does look really exhausted though, especially compared to Hill who is sweating just as much but is walking and hopping around all the time with great ease, even more than Channing who also puts his hands on his knees at times.

I don't like that Blake is developing a relationship with Oden

We got to trade that guy because even though he’s good at tossing alley oops up to Oden, he’s in the way of the development of Bayless and Rudy.

A couple of things

pop out of these videos and stills. Greg has really good hands; he handles crisp passing and can put the ball on the floor. Oh yeah, he’s also really strong. Channing Fry is a confident and happy human being, a great ambassador for Portland – with a smooth game. Finally, Steve Blake may be the most steely eyed and determined player on the team. He had a pro player year with Denver and followed up with solid play last year. Instead of cashing in he’s in the gym all summer practicing hard and developing his game. I’m not saying he’s the next Steve Nash but when I watch his steady play it’s obvious there’s no point guard problem for the Blazers. He’s the man. You disagree….

I could be wrong, but I think he is a former Arkansas player who the Blazers brought in

to work Greg out. I don’t know if he does it for experience, or if he gets paid or what though. I’m pretty sure he has zero chance of a roster spot…at least with us.

Arkansas

Steven Hill is 2nd all-time in blocked shots at Arkansas.

Oden is a beast

I was in Vegas and watched Steven Hill get the best of Hilton Armstrong. Now Hilton Armstrong is no small guy. But next to Hill he didn’t seem that intimidating. Watching Hill next to Oden, reminded me of when Rasheed would have to guard Shaq. And trust me, Hill is no small man. When Oden gets into shape he is going to demand a double team from almost all teams. Otherwise, he is going to destroy teams inside.

By the way, if you didn’t get a chance to watch the videos on the Blazers website that blazerholic5 linked earlier, I recommend them. It’s probably 10 minutes worth of video of the same practice. You really get a chance to see Channing Frye’s jumper. It looks good in case you’re wondering.

Whatever they are paying Steven Hill - it's not enough!

He is absorbing some serious punishment with almost zero chance to make the team.

Aldridge said. "We feel like we can beat any team. We feel like we can beat the Spurs, Suns, Lakers, Mavericks, whoever any night right now, and we'll still be here when those teams get old and their guys retire. We're going to be here for a long time."

yeah

The longer he sticks around, the more I think he’s going to fill that 15th roster spot. How much do we want Oden beating on Frye, LMA, and Przy?

and fly him out here to get Oden used to playing a true defender…someone who can swat his ass on occasion.

Hill and Channing are exactly what Greg needs right now. Greg isn’t ready for Joel yet, but he will be in a very short time. And after a few weeks up against Joel, the rest of the league won’t be ready for Greg. Ever.

The more I see of Channing

The more I think he’s a long-term keeper. He’s got a great work ethic, he’s in great shape and he’s smart both on and off the court. He’s a class-act all around and a great ambassador for the Blazers.

Plus he’s funny as hell.

Dang

I just had the opportunity to look at the photos from Casey’s blog because of a blockage at work. He’s big. I’m not even excited about Oden yet and those are some impressive photos. If he would just blog on his blog about no hot water, then I’m jumping on his bandwagon.

I’m concerned about him building a relationship with Frye and Blake. We need them in a trade with RLEC for that vet with playoff experience to get us over the hump. I don’t want KP to keep wounding Oden’s heart by trading away all his friends.
